The present item is excessively scarce with no copies traced on either COPAC or OCLC WorldCat. 4to 18pp. on ten leaves paginated 1-2 17-24 57-63 79. In original brown printed wraps. Aged and worn with rusted staples. The present item is defective lacking several leaves perhaps the attentions of the booksellers only interested in the books but carrying the Fourth Day's Sale complete pp.57-63 lots 936-1076 devoted to the sale of the 'Library of Miscellaneous Literature including Italian English and French Standard Authors also Loggan's Oxford and Cambridge folio vellum 1675; Johnson's Dictionary 1st Edition 2 vols. folio calf 1755; Saxton's Atlas of England folio old calf 1579 etc. etc.' The library section largely priced in pencil with a few names. One notable lot given the circumstances was '990 Austen Jane Works 6 Marryat 4 and 20 0ther vols.' which sold for £2 10s. Loosely inserted is a printed billhead from Alfred J. Burrows 'Amalgamated with Messrs. Knight Frank & Rutley' made out in pencil to Maggs and dated 20 August 1931 a bill for five lots purchased at the sale totalling £35 2s 6d. British Army in India a supplies scandal Eight highly-finished capable caricatures by 'C' involving a Raj army supplies scandal 'Bilk' 'Jemadar Amwalla and the Old Atasi Troupe' 'Mahomed Arif & Co' 'the G. C. M.' and the Madras Times.
Two dated from Cannanore Kannur Kerala India one to December 1913 and the other simply to 1913. Eight witty and attractive caricatures in a sub-Punch style. All eight in good condition on lightly-aged paper. Each in black ink on a separate piece of paper five of them 33.5 x 21.5 cm and three of them 21 x 17 cm. The context of the caricatures is at present obscure but would undoubtedly make itself clear with specialist research. The five largest illustrations are: ONE: Caption: 'Please to remember The twenty-seventh of November The "Bilk-Powder" treason and plot'. Balding European in dress uniform sitting on a powder barrel on which is written: 'Finest high explosives Bilk Powder Mahomed Arif & Co Sole Manufacturers Guaranteed to retain its power even after four years.' Barrel behind with 'ACRE JCS' on it. TWO: Dated in bottom right-hand corner: 'after Marcus Stone II Cannanore Dec 1913'. Same balding individual portrayed as a Regency duellist waiting pensively with pistol in hand at a stile as dapper figure with monocle and cane approaches. Musical phrase at foot with words: 'Somebodys waiting for Somebody. OLD SONG'. THREE: Caption: 'Another musical "hit" in "The Marriage Market" at Daly's "Slippery Jack" sings a pathetic BIlk Ballad accompanied by the full band of the G.C.M.' Same balding individual on stage in cowboy costume with marching band of Indian musicians behind him and monocled figure peeping out from behind curtain. Musical phrase at foot with words: 'My wife will tell the Public of the way that I've been served'. FOUR: Caption: 'Ragtime in Camp Jemadar Amwalla and The Old Atasi Troupe. "Oooohhhh! he's just meant for kings and queens "Dont yer ask us what he means "Topkhanah ke awaz par tumhara dil burra hojata" We just love that Hitchy Koo Hitchy Koo Hitchy Koo'. Balding individual in military fatigues at back of stage doing something akin to a Hitler salute while saying 'Kan Kholo Bloody Monkey' while five portly Indian men four in military unfiform perform music four on instruments and one singing. FIVE: Caption: 'Il Trovatore Act 4 Scene 19 Leonora Alias "Alicemary". from without deplores the fate of her lover and is answered from within the prison by Manrico Manrico "Tho' for one year we sever "Thou wilt remember me. "In the "Madras Times" there thou wilt champion me Alicemary mine! we part but not for ever'. The balding figure in a cell in chains with a view of a woman through barred gothic windows behind him. The three smaller illustrations are: SIX: Dated in bottom right-hand corner 'C. Cannanore 1913'. Musical phrase at foot with words: 'and the truth shall ever come uppermost and justice shall be done OLD SONG'. Regency scene featuring five Western individuals in a tavern including monocled figure and twittish toff outside window stalking with a gun. SEVEN: Caption: 'Serenade "Bilkeuse" by Il Domeni'. Balding individual in Elizabethan dress serenades Indian figure at window: 'Bilk on oh Bilk Sweet Aaaaaaaarif Oh Bilk again once more! Bilk oooonnnn!' Slipped in is a photocopy of a 1978 Notes and Queries review by Simon Blackburn of 1976 limited 98 pp. edition 200 copies titled 'Archbishop King's Sermon on Predestination' by Cadenus Press Monkstown Ireland intro & ed. by D.Berman and A. Carpenter respectively. This very usefully sets the work in the context of contemporary philosophy and the scientific revolution suggesting many of Berkeley's concerns were 'rooted in the controversies surrounding King's position'. Very scarce and only subsequent also very scarce 1976 ed. seems to have been issued since. The first five letters from London Forest Hill and Catford; the rest from Pennsylvania with 15 from 621 Kelly Avenue Wilkinsburg Pittsburgh. Between 1 March 1926. A total of 140pp. i.e. 98pp. 12mo; 40pp. 8vo; 2pp. 4to. One letter possibly incomplete unsigned the other 24 signed 'Dundas' with postscripts sometimes signed 'Das'. The three letters before the last addressed to 'Meredith' the other 22 addressed to 'Smut'. Of the 25 letters: 7 from 1926; 4 from 1927; 10 from 1928; 4 from 1929. The first five letters to 19 November 1926 from London three from 143 Como Road Forest Hill SE23; two from 406 Stanstead Road Catford SE6; the rest from Pennsylvania with 15 from 621 Kelly Avenue Wilkinsburg Pittsburgh and one each from 411 Pitt Street Wilkinsburg; 510 Mifflin Avenue Wilkinsburg; 839 E. Hutchinson Avenue Edgewood Pittsburgh; and letterheads of the Penn Albert Hotel Greensburg and the Penn Grove Hotel Grove City. Between 1 March 1926 and 6 June 1929. An interesting correspondence emphatically materialistic and enthused with the youthful good humour and bullishness of a young Englishman who is attempting to make his way as an accountant training with Price Waterhouse in the 'Land of Opportunity'. Dundas adopts American mannerisms 'Gee boy!' and 'O.K.!' and exhibits puerile humour 'We have been having an air polluting competition in the office this evening the chap next to me has won easily but I've cheated him for having a cold I couldn't smell him' and the characteristic casual racism of the period from New York he writes 'And the Hutoo. I've never seen so many at once in my natural.'. References in the correspondence reveal that 'Dundas' is an'Old Erithian' a former students of West Street School Erith Kent and of Scottish extraction and that at the start of the correspondence he works in an office in London. The recipient with whom Dundas was at school is in England training to be an actuary. Topics include: the passage over; New York 'the chap we're staying with took us downtown in his Dodge'; Prohibition; prices clothing rent chewing gum; Dundas's extensive amorous activities including 'heavy necking' with a number of 'girls' 'Gee boy! We've got a nice little girl in this house. . She is by no means slow In the pictures & in the car - Oh! Boy!!! - xxx'; hotels; his work travelling around the area surrounding Pittsburgh as an auditor; jazz; his studying at the Pittsburgh School of Accountancy; festivities in America; his acquistion of a piano; the climate; the relative qualities of American and English men and 'girls'; sports and recreations 'I am going to join the Minnetoska Club here. It is a canoe club tennis Baseball & swimming'; the motor car and 'autoists'; an account of a trip to Sligo 'a town so small that although it is only 100 miles away most Pittsburghers have never heard of it'; his efforts as a photographer 'I have now completed an album containing all the fellows pictures . I have orders for 14 of them now & will probably have orders for 20 or so more . For once photography is paying me'; radio broadcasting 'Did you ever listen to the "Gold Spot Pals" that was the broadcast of the Gold Spot Shoe Company'; road taxes. The correspondence begins with news of a dance with some clues towards the author's identity: 'There weren't very many of our old crowd there mainly people who left before we did. Have you see sic Woollatt just lately Gee! he has grown. . Bob Horlock Bell Harry Cameron Lilian Rayner Doris Knott & one or two others were there.' With the third letter 26 April 1926 comes an announcement: 'now hold tight - Dad & I are trying to get to America we have our names down for the next Quota and expect to go about Sept or Oct but of course there is nothing settled yet and there are many slips twixt the cup and the lip.' On 11 November he reports that 'we got through our Medical Exam O.K. & that we have booked our passage on the Carmania sailing on the 27th inst'. A month later on 14 December he writes from Wilkinsburg to describe the passage over 'On Saturday night we ran into a gale. Gee boy! didn't she rock! I'll say she did. Some of the people had the wind up. One chap at the table next to us got up dressed & put his life belt on.'. By 20 November 1927 his mother and 'Peggy' sister have arrived and he has already dumped a girlfriend 'She kept me waiting for 1 ½ hours one night because she had something to do & we were going to a dance.' enrolled on a course at the Pittsburgh School of Accounting and been to '5 dances in the last 6 weeks'. At the end of 1927 12 December he reports that he is 'still with Price Waterhouse accountants & working hard'. On 16 January 1928 he writes that 'Prohibition here is a big farce & in my opinion is doing more harm than good. It is very much like the "under 16" smoking in the old country. You know how many kids will start smoking at 10 & 12 just to feel big. Well here the high school & college people drink just because they are told they mustn't. Anyone who wants it can get as much as they want - and what stuff gee its poison. I smelled some stuff that was supposed to be whiskey if that was whiskey I'm dutch it smelled more like methylated spirits to me. Of course the good stuff can be bought but one would have to pay $5.00 & up a pint. . I saw one fellow being carried out of the movies on new years night he had been drinking bad liquor & he was all drawn up into a terrible shape.' On 15 April 1928 he reports that he is 'still with P. W. & Co. The boss hasn't officially confirmed that I am permanent but all the seniors seem to think I am. Added to that there are only six out of 35 temporary men left.' On 2 December 1928: 'I too am anxiously waiting the R100. Boy I hope she knocks the Grafs time into a cocked hat. I'd just love the opportunity to say "there see thats what the old country can do!"' On 24 February 1929 he can report that 'Things have broken pretty good for me in the office this year. I am now a ranking senior - that is for the busy season. Right after I came back from Huntington I received my first "In Charge" assignment. It was a large Department store & Mail Order House with 8000000 Capitalization. This entailed 2 stores in New York & 3 in Pittsburgh. . one heck of a lot of hard work for me for the three fellows they gave me were green I even had to teach them how to make a check mark'. The same letter carries a reference to 'Marion Robertshaw' who is 'now with the B.B.C.' On 3 March 1929 he reports that 'Dad is in the experimental Dept of the Hudson Motor works in Detroit and doing very well.' and asks: 'Who are you for in the General Election. Ramsay McDonald has all my wishes with Lloyd George running him a close second. I understand Ll. G. has a new idea for wiping out unemployment. I think if those two men could work together they could put England back in her place. I don't know whether you have realized it but England is certainly slipping badly and something drastic will have to be done for her to regain her place in the worlds affairs. Of course I am relying on American statistics for my assertion.' By the time of the last letter 6 June 1929 he is living a bachelor existence at 839 E. Hutchison Avenue Edgewood 'very comfortably situated in my room & liking it not so bad. At times it gets a little lonesome . life has just been one exam after another . By the way since Dad went to Detroit hes been getting on fine. He got into the experimental dept of Hudson Motor Co on some kind of special exhibition work they were doing & got them to adopt some ideas of his for saving them time & money & he has been made foreman. I was glad to see Ramsay McDonald went into power. Its tough luck he didn't get a working majority. All the papers here are watching the Labor Party closely to see what happens. Here's wishing them all the best. I think the best thing that could happen in England would be for the Liberal Party to be abandoned & join with the Labor.' But it is most trying to an author to see his characters presented to the public in a way utterly unlike his own conception of them.' The writer expresses outrage that the electors are 'endeavouring to send those to form the next Parliament who are likely to increase instead of diminish this never-to-be discharged National Debt.' 20 and 22 January and 3 March 1890; all from Scarsdale Great Malvern. All three items in very good condition. Interesting series of letters by an obscure 1890s poet. Letter One 12mo 7 pp: Although he realises that some are 'rather poor' he is sending through his brother possibly the artist Alan Wright 1864-1959 'all the lyrics I have by me': 'I have not had time to "weed" yet being veryy busily engaged writing lyrics for a Comedy-Opera 'Ethelinda or a Philanthropic Fad' 1890 on which he collaborated with Hamilton O. Wylde - & a libretto for Operetta; also been trying my hand at very sensational prose'. He has 'quite forgotten' the poem 'Yesterday': 'There is a lyric in the brown-paper-covered book "But Yesterday" - but I do not know if that is the one.' He will 'submit a Sonnet or something to "Igdrasil" shortly'. He misses 'Comus' a magazine edited by Parkes 1888-9: 'as there was always something to attract one in it - more than can be said for most mushroom-papers do forgive the epithet - it was not intended of this era'. He has been 'rather shakey' 'suffering with nicotine poisoning of the lower lip'. He is sending Parkes the 'last collection of my verses' entitled 'In Idle Hours' no copy on COPAC. 'It is coverless - Pardon that - I trust the inside will gain your favour. It is out of print - & only 12 copies were printed. Three on rough-edged paper - others as this one. It is I regret one of the follies of a year past. Cavil not therefore O Critic - but pity the poor deluded youth!' Letter Two 12mo 1 p: Parkes's 'friend may like to see the enclosed lyrics not present - which I have just written.' Letter Three 12mo 4 pp: Apologises for asking for the return of his lyrics 'safe to hand to night'. 'The Composer I sent to however was hard to please: in fact I was unable to do business with him'. He has a 'little collection of Sonnets . in the press' nothing on COPAC under either Broad or Wright. Wonders whether Parkes will 'put the Sonnet "Igdrasil" in the magazine of that name'. 'I suppose "Comus" will appear again "pro bono publico" - I have been writing short stories lately for which I seem to have a slight gift.' In fact my first was well received by a large firm & I am awaiting further hearing from them.' Hopes he may send 'anything in the poetry-line for insertion in "Igdrasil" as I shall submit nothing but what is worthy of my best attempts'. In a postscript reports that the libretto on which he has been collaborating see above is 'now musically complete' and 'on the eve of printing prior to copyrighting. There are extensive pencil annotations in a later hand on the second leaf. Very neatly written. Addressed to ‘J. G. Wilson Esqre.’ and signed ‘Anstey Guthrie’. He has ‘much pleasure’ in answering Wilson’s question. ‘‘Shut Out’ is a short story of mine which was published in Longmans Magazine about 1895 or 6 afterwards included in a volume of short stories under the title of “The Talking Horseâ€. I think published by Messrs. Smith & Elder - but now long out of print. “The Talking Horse†is included in “Humour & Fantasy†but not “Shut Outâ€.’ See Image. 31 October 1931. The cartoons were published in Punch London: 26 August 1865; 18 May and 2 June 1866; 18 May 1869. Four charming and amusing cartoons from Punch's golden age. All four are executed in a similar style but the identity of the cartoonist or cartoonists is unknown. The first of the two cartoons in Item Two below as published by Punch has the monogram signature 'F C' engraved in the bottom right-hand corner. No Punch cartoonist with these initials is apparent. ONE: Captioned: 'Another Brilliant Idea Only Brillianter!' 21 x 13.5cm. In good condition on leaf of browned high-acidity paper torn from a notebook. Two men idle in a punt while two women hold up sheets. Appeared on 26 August 1865 as companion piece to an earlier Punch cartoon 5 August 1865 the latter captioned 'Brilliant Idea How we had ourselves blown up the river as it was a great deal too hot to row.' TWO: Two companion pieces 12 x 10cm and 11 x 9cm laid down on 13.5 x 21 cm leaf. Both in good condition lightly-aged; with slight loss to one edge of mount. Mount captioned in manuscript: 'ON THE ICE. Being Helped along a Slide by some one Else's Brother and - Being Helped along by one's own Brother.' Dated in bottom right-hand corner of mount to August 1866 but in fact appearing in Punch 10 March 1866. In the first of the two a pretty young girl is solicitously assisted along an icy path by a dapper young man with moustache straw hat and cane; and in the second the same young lady's younger brother propels her forwards along the path with a heave his head planted firmly in her bustle. THREE: Captioned: 'Boat-Race of the Future. Drifting down to the Starting-Point.' 11 x 17cm. On 13 x 21cm mount. Two row boats each containing five ladies in with an urban river bank behind them. The five ladies in the boat in the foreground are smartly dressed in uniform striped dresses and spotted hats. Published in Punch 2 June 1866. Both in good condition lightly-aged; with slight loss to one edge of mount. FOUR: 'This is what we may Expect to see this Season.' 21 x 13.5cm. In good condition on leaf of browned high-acidity paper torn from a notebook as Item One. Lady dressed in high style with top hat and bustle rides side-saddle on a bicycle with her little dog scampering beside her while pursued by a surprised John Bull on another bicycle past a bemused bystander. Published in Punch 18 May 1869 with the slightly different caption 'Oh! Then this is what we may expect to see this season.' The final three pages carry a catalogue of 'Publications of The Book Society 19 Paternoster Row London.' In fair condition lightly aged with faded front cover and dogeared corners. Frontispiece engraving of the royal couple encircled by design topped by the Prince of Wales feathers. A royal souvenir written in the usual mix of eulogy and religiosity with author's initials 'F. For more about O'Neill son of the Victorian artist George Bernard O'Neill see his obituary in The Times 15 June 1946. LETTER: 4pp. 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition on lightly-aged paper. Begins: 'My dear Hay Will you honour the humble author by accepting the enclosed copy of "Clerical Verses"' Regarding the poems he writes: 'You will at any rate be amused at the Vanity which threw them into type and bound them in cloth.' The book is he continues 'strictly limited to Clericals in its circulation' but he is making an exception in the case of 'an old Clerical such as you for you have always encouraged my Muse'. He has 'only printed "proper" verses but you'll find one improper one on a loose sheet'. He concludes: 'All the verses are strictly founded on facts.' BOOK: 31pp. 8vo with the 'loose leaf' mentioned in the letter to Hay tipped in at the end carrying a poem titled 'A Moment' with explanatory text. In blue cloth binding with title in gilt on front cover. In fair condition on aged and worn paper shaken in worn binding. The poems are humorous and many are preceded by explanatory texts the first for example to a poem titled '76 pro 27' reading: 'The following verses were sent to me when Leeds Branch Manager by Mr. Besant in return for an acceptance letter rating a man of 27 up to age 76. The life in question now a distinguished member of the Colonial Civil Service would be "office age 91" to-day 1911 if he had been fool enough to complete.' Laid down on the front pastedown is a reproduction of a cartoon. The volume is excessively scarce with no copy traced on either COPAC or OCLC WorldCat. The volume contains 29 inserts including two Autograph Letters Signed from A. D. Besant son of Annie Besant General Manager of the Clerical Medical and General to 'Raynes'. Both are on the letterhead of 9 Hampstead Hill Gardens NW3 and they date from 28 February and 2 March 1953. In the first Besant mentions among other matters 'O'Neill's verses': 'I have various odd ones stored away somewhere and if I can dig them out I will send you copies.' In the second he states that he is sending 'the poem by O'Neill on which I could not put my hand when I wrote to you last week. He dashed it off impromptu'. The poem referred to appears to be present among the other 28 inserts in O'Neill's autograph and titled 'Impromptu' and beginning 'When the Bobby's on his beat'. The other inserts include four more leaves carrying manuscript compositions one of them a holograph 'Copy' of a twenty-line poem 1p. 8vo by O'Neill dated at the end 'H. D. O'N. 24.12.12.' The poem is untitled and begins: 'This is the Saga of Digby The Saga of Digby and Christmas Tells how he carried the parcels Numerous brown-paper parcels Tied up with string by a lady .'. Also present are a manuscript prose text headed 'The late George Gould Churchward and 21 cuttings of poems extracted from the Post Magazine and Insurance Monitor from 1927 and 1928 and one from 1931. Lithographed Victorian satire on the Royal Academy. The Dolefulle Ballade of Arthur Scumble Now First Imprinted From Ye Originalle M.S. Embellished with Drawynges after Ye Quicke. Drophead title: 'Arthur Scumble or The yonge Probationere.'
London: Ford & West Imp. 54 Hatton Garden. 1852. 6pp. small 4to. Stitched into brown wraps with lithographed title on cover in pastiche of Gothic design including monogrammed initials 'IS' in shield with the letters picked out in red. In fair condition aged and worn. An extremely scarce item no copies found on OCLC WorldCat or COPAC whose text and illustrations cast light on the practices at the Royal Academy in the mid-Victorian period. Scumble is a glaze painting technique. The piece is a poem in four-line stanzas written in Wardour Street English beginning: 'Now lyth and listen Students all I come before ye here To tell the Mischance that befell A yonge Probationere Merrye it was in Londonne streetes The daye was faire to see When sallied forth an Artiste-youth To the Royal Academie.' The drophead title on the first page has the letters in the name 'Arthur Scumble' also picked out in red. Each page carries a highly-stylised illustration the last five in text the first in the margin and depicting a herald holding a flag on a pole and blowing into a horn. The other five illustrations show: the artist handing in his drawing; drawing a skeleton; drawing his 'Figure after the Antique'; running away with hat and glasses flying; and his body being searched after his suicide by two policemen. Running synopses in margins the first reading: 'Of a yonge Artiste hight Arthur Scumble & how he takes a Drawynge to ye Academie to obtain entrance therein as a Probationere.' There follow: 'He urgeth on ye Portere ye. necessitie of a speedie Decisionne by ye. Council.' 'He commenceth Worke at ye Academie' 'But lykes it lyttle' 'He fyndeth ye Skeleton tough' 'Commenceth hys Figure after the Antique. He left a valuable anthology of Arabic poetry to accompany his many historical works and worked as a man of letters during the Zengid and Ayyubid period. He was born in Isfahan in the year 1125, and studied at the Nizamiyya school in Baghdad. He graduated into the bureaucracy, and held jurisdiction over Basra and Wasit. He then became a deputy of the vizier ibn Hubayra. After the death of ibn Hubayra, he went to Damascus in 1166 CE (562 Islamic Calendar) and entered the service of the qadi of Damascus, Kamal ad-Din. The qadi presented him to the Zengid Nur ad-Din, who appointed him a professor in the school he had established there, which then became known as the Imadiyya school in his honour. Nur ad-Din was later appointed to be his Chancellor. After the death of Nur ad-Din in 1174, Imad ad-Din was removed from all his bureaucratic duties, and was banished from the palace. He went to live in Mosul and later entered the service of Saladin, the Kurdish Sultan of Egypt during that time. When Saladin took control of Damascus, Saladin's vizier, al-Qadi al-Fadil, appointed him chancellor, and he also became al-Fadil's deputy. Saladin had been unsure of his talent because he was only a scribe, Imad ad-Din soon became one of the sultan's favourites. As chancellor he did not have to perform the everyday duties of the chancery scribes, and he had a lot of leisure time in Egypt. From then on he accompanied Saladin on all his campaigns. After a certain raid, he was chosen to kill one of the prisoners, but the prisoner was a child and was instead exchanged for a Muslim prisoner held by the Crusaders. Imad ad-Din was present at the Battle of Marj Uyun, the Battle of Hattin, and the subsequent campaign to expel the Crusaders from the Holy Land. At Acre, he criticized Saladin for giving away the city's treasure instead of spending it on the reconquest. At Beirut, he became ill, but was the only scribe capable of writing the terms of surrender. He had recuperated in time to see the aftermath of the Siege of Jerusalem (1187), where he again criticized Saladin's generosity; he was also disgusted by those in charge of the ransom who took bribes, and the rich Crusader nobles who took their treasures with them rather than ransoming the poor. He was present at Acre again during the Third Crusade when the Christians retook the city of Acre, and was among those who fled after the defeat. After Saladin's death in 1193, he began writing his biographies of the sultan. He wrote the Kitab al-Barq al-Shami, which is lost, but was abridged by al-Bundari. This study contains just 5th volume of manuscript abridged by Al-Bundârî.

4 March 1847 and 31 January 1848. Both from the Theatre Royal Dublin. Both letters 2pp 12mo. In good condition lightly aged. Cole's handwriting is difficult. The recipient is not named. The first letter 34 lines long concerns a bill which Cole has drawn on the recipient of the letter. It is coming due and he is uncertain whether it is for £90 or £100. He asks him to withhold payment for a while as 'Lent is always a dead time with me'. He is 'going to try the experiment of Mr Butter for 6 nights' and has 'good hopes of the result'. The second letter begins: 'My dear Sir I have made most liberal offers to Farren Mrs. Nesbitt & Mr. Glen as Mr Lee will tell you & with the exception of the old lady none of the parties appear to have the least consideration or wish to accommodate or help a manager who pays them so liberally as you do - It is not I am sorry to say an uncommon case.' The latter part of the letter is not easily read but concludes: 'I sincerely hope the Keans & the Wife's Secret are showing you full houses.' 4 March 1847 and 31 January 1848. Between April and June 1907 Daily Chronicle; National Vigilance Association; London Council for the Promotion of Public Morality; London Female Preventive and Reformatory Institution. A marvellous slice of unexplored Edwardian social history raising questions of morality censorship art and pornography from the papers of William J. Taylor Secretary of the London Female Preventive and Reformatory Institution. The 'Living Statuary' controversy arose over 'the propriety of the living statuary exhibitions in music-halls' Daily Chronicle 30 April 1907 and in particular the performances of the Australian artiste Pansy Montague b. 1885 known as 'La Milo' who posed as a living statue covered in alabaster whitening with a few strategically placed pieces of white material. The scandal was not restricted to London: a parade in Coventry in 1907 in which 'La Milo' took part as Lady Godiva caused an outrage. The present collection gives a full picture of the range of opinion with Taylor invoking John Ruskin and a large number individuals quoted in the newspaper reports some of the quotaions lengthy from individuals ranging from leading clerics and Mrs Bramwell Booth to Millicent Fawcett Hall Caine Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema and Max Beerbohm the last of whom comments with characteristic wit: 'It is no more improper for human beings to represent statues than for statues to represent human beings. But the practice strikes me as rather absurd.' The result of the controversy was inconclusive and the practice of 'living statuary' continued for decades in the 'tableaux vivants' at Soho's Windmill Theatre. The collection is in good condition with light signs of age and wear apart from the three loose newspaper cuttings which are in poor condition. ONE: Duplicated copy of letter on 'LIVING STATUARY' by William J. Taylor as secretary of the LFPRI 200 Euston Road NW 4 May 1907 'To the Editor of the Daily Chronicle'. 2pp 8vo. With a few minor manuscript corrections. 'Having for nearly 49 years laboured to rescue the victims of ungoverned passion' he is in the present case 'surprised that not more references have been made to that prince of art critics John Ruskin. His words are surely worth of recall.' A long quotation from 'the “Eagle's Nest†Lecture 8' follows on how 'The study of the nude is injurious beyond the limits of honor and decency in daily life'. Taylor feels that 'the words of Ruskin should be written in letters of fire and burned into the consciences of men and women everywhere. The only safe path to the maintenance of virtue is not to go in any direction calculated to excite our baser nature but in striving to keep as far away as it is possible.' All four items on the NVA's letterhead and the first three signed by both the NVA secretary Willliam Alexander Coote 1842-1918 and the secretary of the London Council for the Promotion of Public Morality E. First circular 15 May 1907 2pp discussing the fact that 'the Music Halls have for some time been giving an entertainment described as “Living Statuary†in which men and women appear apparently in a state of nudity' and the 'strong protests' that have been made 'in London and the Provinces'. The NVA and LCPPM are joining a deputation to the London County Council which is to be headed by the Bishop of London and they request a delegate so that 'the deputation shall be thoroughly representative of the efforts being put forth in London to help young men and women to a more excellent way of life'. First card postmarked 16 May 1907 and addressed to the secretary of the London Female Preventive and Reformatory Institution written in manuscript and giving the date of the deputation. Second circular 29 May 1907 1p giving details of the time and place of the delegation. Second card postmarked 3 July 1907 unsigned and in manuscript a reminder of the date for the deputation. Berlin; 4 September 1820. The letter announces the transfer to Berlin of 'Monsieur de Wagner' London Chargé d'Affaires of the the Kingdom of Württemberg resident at 42 Alpha Place Regent's Park. The recipient Sir John Coxe Hippisley whom George III had described as a 'busy man' and 'grand intriguer' had retired from public life two years previously but was clearly still involved in diplomatic affairs. 2pp 4to. Bifolium. Forty-one lines of neatly-written text addressed to 'Sir J C Hippisley Bart. Lower Grosvenor Street.' On aged and worn paper with short closed tears at edges of folds. On paper with two prominent circular watermarks one a regal eagle with motto 'Gott bewahre sein Reich' the other a portrait of 'Friedrich Wilhelm III Koenig von Preussen'. Wagner begins with 'the most humble and anxious apology' for his late letter which he hopes to excuse by explaining the 'circumstances': 'Soon after my arrival in Stuttgart I had the honor to see the King and to deliver your letters and parcels; I delivered also those to the Queen Dowager Augusta of Brusnwick wife of Frederick I who had died in 1816 in her own hands as well as to Baron Maucler who probably has written to you since'. Wagner delayed writing to Hippisley as Maucler had 'promised me a letter for you'. Wagner was 'received very graciously and promoted to the rank of Councillor of Legation'. A bout of ill health was cured by a two-month tour of Switzerland. 'The King and Queen as you will have heard were in Italy and derived benefit from the baths tho' as yet without the desired effect for the prospect of the throne' i.e. no pregnancy. On Wagner's return to Stuttgart 'the situation as Chargé d'Affaires at Berlin was offered to me under favorable conditions' which he accepted. The previous holder Count Mandelsloh is to be Wagner's 'second successor in London' and will 'present you this himself and I beg to recommend him to you most particularly for you will find him worthy in every respect of the kind reception and confidence with which I have been honored by you myself'. He will write to Hippisley 'more at length on another opportunity when I shall have more leasure sic'. In the meantime he presents his respects 'to Lady and to Miss Hippisley as well as to Mr. Hippisley'. The Mau Mau uprising began in 1952 and the atrocities committed by the rebels were matched by those of the British whose Attorney General in Kenya Eric Griffith-Jones wrote to Governor Baring in 1957 that the colony's detention camps for Mau Mau suspects were 'distressingly reminiscent of conditions in Nazi Germany or Communist Russia'. He advised that suspects be beaten mainly on their upper bodies and that those administering violence should 'remain collected balanced and dispassionate' also commenting: 'If we are going to sin we must sin quietly.' Among the victims of British brutality was Hussein Onyango Obama grandfather of President Barack Obama. From a batch of Foreign Office documents including material from the Information Research Department for whose activities financed from the budget of the Special Intelligence Service otherwise MI6 see The Times 17 August 1995; and also Michael Cullis's obituary of Sir John Peck in the Independent 20 January 1995. The first section begins: 'Before considering in detail what the secret society called Mau Mau is and what are its aims; it will be as well to examine traditional background of the tribe of Africans involved – the Kikuyu.' The section includes an 'account of the barbaric rites practised at Mau Mau initiation ceremonies' from 'the Nairobi Correspondent of The Times' 9 October 1952. The section on 'Mau Mau terrorism' begins with a description of the police response to 'the murder of Chief Waruhiu' and discusses the activities of Jomo Kenyatta. The points of Sir Evelyn Baring's 'programme for the economic and social development of Kenya' 28 October 1952 are enumerated in the last section followed by a description of Governor Baring's'defence plans'. Without place or date but after the demise of the 'New Witness' in 1923 and before G. K. Chesterton's death in 1936. 3pp. 4to. In fair condition on aged worn and browned paper. Ada Chesterton worked with her brother-in-law while assistant editor of the 'New Witness'. Her admiration for his talents was fully reciprocated G. K. Chesterton describing his sister-in-law as 'brilliant'. It begins: 'Very much has been written and said of G. K. C. the poet the pamphleteer the genius of paradox who holds the attention of his listeners by his dazzling sleight of words. I am going to write of him from a different angle - G. K. C. the journalist as he is known and gauged in Fleet Street. There is held generally speaking a most mistaken view of that same Fleet Street which is for the most part regarded as the mere receptacle for the Capitalist press: the place where mis-statements by the million are issued from a rapidly revolving hoe and distributed broadcast.' She proceeds to describe 'another side of Fleet Street' 'an informal tribunal where men are tried for offences never mentioned in the public press' a place where arrogance is 'a sin'. It is here that there is 'no greater idol' than Chesterton 'a supreme journalist' who 'can write anywhere and anywhen on anything'. She recounts an anecdote regarding an incident involving a 'distinguished literary critic' and Chesterton 'during the life of the New Witness'. She concludes by stating that having 'worked with him in difficult and troublous circumstances' she feels that Chesterton proves 'his title to genius more in his capacity for turning the commonplace of existence into the pure gold of fine thought'. Printed prospectus dated Edinburgh 14 July 1847. Circular letter from Committee Rooms Cranston's Temperance Coffee House High St Edinburgh; 1 August 1844. Accounts at 12 August 1844. Surprisingly little appears to have been written about the public baths at 12 Nicolson Square Edinburgh; with no references to it on the Scottish Archives Network. There is however an informative reference to the subject in Francis H. Groome's 'Ordnance Gazetteer of Scotland' 1884: 'Good public baths of various kinds and various extent for the upper and the middle classes are in several parts both of the city and its environs. Public baths for the working classes were long a desideratum though earnestly desired by many of the working classes themselves. A proposal to establish them by subscription was at length spiritedly begun in 1844 but somewhat flaggingly carried out. The chief suite of them was fitted up in a tenement purchased for the purpose in Nicolson Square. They cost upwards of £1000 beyond the amount of the subscriptions paid in or obtainable; passed under the immediate management of persons who became bound for the extra sum; and were so well constructed and so much appreciated that nothing but the debt upon them prevented the immediate extending and cheapening of baths for working men.' ITEM ONE. Printed prospectus headed 'PUBLIC BATHS FOR THE WORKING CLASSES.' Signed in type by 'D. McLAREN' and 'WM. JOHNSTON'. Dated 'Edinburgh 14th July 1847.' 1p. 4to. Begins: 'SIR AT a Meeting of the Association for the establishment of BATHS FOR THE WORKING CLASSES held in the Council Chambers on the 6th. inst. - the Right Hon. Lord Dunfermline in the Chair - a Report was laid before the Meeting giving a statement of the whole proceedings of the Association together with a detailed account of the total receipts and expenditure. It appeared from these documents that the PUBLIC BATHS ARE NOW COMPLETED and ready for being opened in Nicolson square one of the most central situations in town for those who are expected to use them. There are Fourteen Baths on the Lowest Floor and Back Area for which the charge of Fourpence is proposed to be made including Hot Baths; Five on the Street Floor fitted up in a superior manner for which Sixpence will be charged; and Five on the Upper Floor having accommodation equal to any in town for which a Shilling will be charged. From this class it is expected a profit will be derived so as with the others to make the whole Establishment self-supporting if opened free from the incumbrance of debt. last eight words in italics With reference to the Expenditure and Receipts it appeared that the whole outlay in reference to and including the original purchase-money of the property had been £2585 8s. 5d. of which £1645 0s. 10d. have been paid thus leaving a deficiency of £940 7s. 7d.' An appeal for subscriptions is made and the name of members who have 'agreed to double their subscriptions' is given including Bishop Gillis. Eight parties receiving subscriptions are named from 'MESSRS WILLIAM BLACKWOOD & SONS 45 George Street' to 'MR THOMAS IRELAND 4 Hunter Square General Collector to the Baths Fund.' It is stressed that the matter is 'peculiarly important at the present period when the promotion of habits of personal cleanliness may be instrumental in preventing the spreading of contagious disease which prevails to such a great extent in this City.' Similar items concerning meeting at the Hopetoun Rooms and Music Hall are listed on COPAC but this item is not to be found either on COPAC or WorldCat. ITEM TWO: Secretarial Letter signed by Charles Gardner Secretary of 'the Committee appointed for establishing working Men's Baths in Edinburgh' to the Directors of the Bank of Scotland. Committee Rooms Cranston's Temperance Coffee House High Street Edinburgh. 1 August 1844. 3pp. 4to. Bifolium. In fair condition on aged and worn paper with a closed tear repaired with archival tape. Giving 'a brief statement of our present case' beginning: 'By subscriptions among the working men themselves we have now collected somewhat more than a thousand pounds. The Sum of two thousand is required for the proper construction of the Baths and a large portion of this Sum we expect to obtain in the course of a few months by collections now going on among the operatives and further Subscriptions from among the middle and upper classes. It has occurred to several gentlemen who take an interest in the proposed Baths that we might allowably make an Appeal to the Banks and other great establishments in Edinburgh trusting that they might be disposed to regard the object as one justifying an exercise in their liberality.' The 'establishment of Baths is an idea originating amongst the working men themselves and which they have much at heart and promises to add much to their health and comfort'. It will also assist 'the moral improvement of the humbler classes of society' and it is 'also very clear that when the health of the humbler inhabitants of a large City is improved the benefit is reflected upon the superior classes both in preserving their own health and in reducing the burdens to which they are subject from all causes which promote indigence. This view of course bears in an especial manner upon the Banks and Public offices'. The working classes 'are in a manner compelled to ask aid from their more amply endowed brethren trusting that the kindly charities which exist among the different classes of Society in <> will hear them out in the attempt'. Good on aged paper with similar closed tear to that of Item Two and repaired in the same way. Lists '1. Higher Class Subscriptions' including £100 from 'His Royal Highness Prince Albert'. This is followed by '2. Middle Class Subscriptions' and '3. Trades' followed by 'Note -. Many of the Trades have subscribed considerable sums particularly the Cabinet Makers & who contributed to 36 the average subscription of the operatives is a days wage for each man'. Followed by 'Remarks' of 33 lines. 'The use of the Bath they conceive is pregnant with the most beneficial results to this class by cleaning the skin and imparting a new tone the nerves are invigorated a desire for improvement springs up and the nurseries of disease in which so many operatives reside are by a natural consequence wholesome and healthful abodes . filthy habits aer the parents of crime . The working man would submit that they are not proceeding too far when they say that it is in the interest of the public establishments to patronize a Scheme which carries such important benefits to all classes of the community'. 1 May 1859. 12mo 4 pp. Bifolium. Watermarked 'TOWGOOD'S SUPER FINE 1859'. Eighty-seven lines of text. Text clear and complete on aged and grubby paper. With little hope of influencing the editor of Punch the author feels compelled to 'write and tell you what I and many others think about your Publication and the malignant spite you display towards individuals who happen to incur your wrath'. This 'malignity' he feels 'must be derived from that murderous old ruffian from whom your publication takes its name and which alone prevents it being an influential publication. Men laugh at the jokes in it and admire the skill of Mr. Leech and his assistants but II have yet to find the Man whose opinions were ever changed by anything he saw in "Punch".' He gives two examples of 'many instances of individuals who have been persecuted' by the magazine: the actor Charles Kean and 'Mr Williams of Lambeth'. What had Kean 'done to incur the wrath of "Punch" Simply offended one of its staff'. As for Williams he had stated 'in a Speech to the Electors of Lambeth . that he had been offered a Title which he rejected - now that was nothing but the truth for you know very well that a Baronetcy really was offered to Mr Williams and rejected'. The author accuses 'Punch' of being 'ready enough to make yourself a mere tool of corruption . trying to do that by ridicule which those in power could not do by flattery'. Quotes 'the advice given this day by the "Weekly Dispatch" to the "Saturday Review" before concluding 'You need not make any funny remarks about any grammatical errors that may appear in this letter. 29 October 1907. On ‘Khartoum’ Sudan letterhead. The entry for Slatin in the Oxford DNB gives a good outline of the life of this adventurer. The present item forms half of a 4to leaf torn down the middle vertically no doubt in order to provide an autograph. In good condition lightly aged. Written lengthwise on the reverse in a large bold hand is the valediction: ‘Hoping that you are fit & well / Yours ever / R Slatin’. The text on the recto reads: ‘. Jackson / . again - and / .y Home a little .cians dates - although .d written word . the gift comes . & thank you for . this time the Katran . be a success’. 29 October 1907.
