Wilson...It was a wonderful advance to be able to se, so to speak, the details of the adventures of these particles in their flight through the gas....""(Lord Rutherford).""C.T.R. Wilson had been developing his cloud-chamber, which was to provide the most powerfull of all methods of investigation in atomic physics. In moist air, if a certain degree of supersaturation is exceeded this can be secured by a sudden expansion of the air) condensation takes place on dust-nuclei, when any are present: if by preliminary operations condensation is made to take place on the dust-nuclei, and the resulting droplets are allowed to settle, the air in the chamber is thereby freed from dust. If now X-rays or radiation from a radioactive substance are passed into the chamber, and if the degree of supersaturation is sufficient, condensation again takes place: this is due to the production of ions by the radiation. Thus the tracks of ionising radiations can be made visible by the sudden expansion of a moist gas, each ion becoming the centre of a visible globule of water. ‎First appearance of the paper which describes the final version of his invention, the famous Cloud-Chamber, - the first Cloud Chamber was invented by him in 1896 - for making visible and photographing the paths of charged particles, an invention for which Wilson received a share of the Nobel Prize in 1827. By using the Cloud Chamber he was here (1911) able to observe the track of an alpha ray by condensing water drops onto the ions produced by its passage.The Cloud Chamber, which Rutherford called ""the most original apparatus in the whole history of physics"", became standard equipment in physics laboratories, and made possible numerous important discoveries in the fields of particle and nuclear physicsAfter 1896 ""Wilson continued to experiment with ultraviolet radiation and other techniques for producing condensation effects, but soon concentrated on atmospheric electricity, not returning to the cloud chamber until December 1910. He designed an improved chamber with new methods of illumination and the possibility of photographing the results. At this time Wilson realized that it might be possible to reveal the track of an a ray by condensing water drops onto the ions produced by its passage. During March 1911 he saw this effect produced in his apparatus. Thus, the elucidation of phenomena seen in the Scottish hills led to the possibility of studying the processes of radioactivity, and the Wilson cloud chamber became an important piece of laboratory equipment. But it was in the study of cosmic rays that it achieved its full power, particularly in the refined form developed by Patrick Blackett, in which it was possible to study particles of very high energy and the production of electron-positron pairs with the chamber situated in a strong magnetic field."" ‎Together with the English version - published 1912 in the Proceedings of the Royal Society - this is Wilson's main paper relating ""that the track of an ionizing particle might be made visible and photographed by condensing water of the ions which is liberated"". The first trails were obtained in 1911 where he submitted a short note of this to the Proceedings. In the offered paper he published the first tracks made by the ionizing particles of alpha, beta and Röntgen-rays. This, Wilson Cloud-Chamber, became an extremely valuable instrument of fundamental research, the discovery of the positron in 1932 and the kaon in 1963 were made by using cloud chambers as detectors.""But the whole course of the particle appears infinitely more clearly by the method invented by C.T.R. Wilson in 1911 and named after him. The radiation is allowed to enter an expansion-chamber, containing a gas saturated with water vapour. A sudden expansion of the chamber cools the gas, and cloud-drops are then formed instantly around the ions produced along the tracks of the particles. By suitable illumination these tracks can be made to stand out clearly as if they had been described by luminous projectiles. The ""Altmeister"" of modern nuclear physics, Lord Rutherford, once called the Wilson chamber ""the most original and wonderful instrument in scientific history"".""Thomson Rees Wilson (1869-1959), a Scottish physicist, is credited with inventing the cloud chamber. Inspired by sightings of the Brocken spectre while working on the summit of Ben Nevis in 1894, he began to develop expansion chambers for studying cloud formation and optical phenomena in moist air. Very rapidly he discovered that ions could act as centers for water droplet formation in such chambers. He pursued the application of this discovery and perfected the first cloud chamber in 1911. In Wilson's original chamber the air inside the sealed device was saturated with water vapor, then a diaphragm is used to expand the air inside the chamber (adiabatic expansion). This cools the air and water vapor starts to condense. When an ionizing particle passes through the chamber, water vapor condenses on the resulting ions and the trail of the particle is visible in the vapor cloud. Wilson, along with Arthur Compton, received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1927 for his work on the cloud chamber. (Wikipedia).‎

‎First printing of an importent paper in the history of organic chemistry in which Wurtz describes his methodof syntheesizing longchain hydrocarbons by using hydrocarbon iodides and sodium, a method essential for the synthesis of a series of hydrocarbons.Parkinson ""Breakthroughs"", 1855 C.Charles Adolphe Wurtz, was born at Strasbourg 1817. For many years he was Professor of Chemistry at the Ecole de Médicine and at Sorbonne in Paris. He was known not only for his researches in organic chemistry but also for his many literary works. He was editor of a Dictionnaire de Chemie Pure et Appliquée, and after 1868 one of the editors of the Annalen der Chemie et de Physique. He died in Paris in 1884.‎

Two days later he made a more remarkable discovery. It had occurred to him that perhaps thetransformation of amygdalin could be effected by the albumin in the almonds, in a manner similar to the action of yeast in sugar...Wöhler suspected that the decomposition was an example of what Berzelius had recently defined as catalysis. Liebig and Wöhler then divided up the detailed examination of the properties and composition of amygdalin. They precipitated from the emulsion of almonds a substance which when dissolved retain its action. They named the active substance ""emulsion"". ‎First appearance of a milestone paper in the history of electricity as Aepinus here found that a heated tourmaline attracted and repelled light bodies. He decided, that the effect was electrical and that its ends was carrying charges of opposite sign, much as soft iron is magnetized by a lodestone. This paper is a forerunner of his ""Tentamen Theoriae electricitatis et magnetismi"", - published 1759, and one of the most original and important books in the history of electricity. It is the first reasoned, fruitful exposition of electrical phenomena based on action-at-a-distance.""Aepinus’ first reseraches on the thermoelectric properties of this stone (Tourmalin) which was then of extreme rarity, were fundamental. He recognized the electrical nature of the attractive power of a warmed tourmaline and attempted not altogether successfully, to reduce its apparent capriciousness to rule. He was particularly struck by the formal similarity between the tourmaline and the magnet in regard to polarity which inspired him to reconsider the possibility, then occasionally discussed, that electricity and magnetism were basically analogous. ‎'From the Christian Times.' London Dated 10 May 1852. For the context see Gardiner's entry in the Oxford DNB. Gardiner's disastrous last mission to Patagonia ended with his death on 6 September 1851 as the last of the seven missionaries to starve to death on Picton Island. No other copy of the present item has been traced either on OCLC WorldCat or on COPAC. 4pp 16mo. Bifolium. Well printed. In fair condition lightly aged and worn and folded several times. At the end of the poem is the author's pseudonym the Greek letter delta with the date 'May 10 1852.' Monologue in blank verse by 'Captain Allan sic Gardiner' who is 'seen lying near a boat in the latest stage of exhaustion'. The poem begins: 'Once more I am myself again. Once more As calm as free from pain as clear in mind As in the days of health I gaze around And ask What hope' The poem is preceded by the following note by the 'Editor': 'We had designed to ask especial attention to the touching narrative of Captain Gardiner's Patagonian Mission and to have given expression to our sentiments upon that great undertaking. If it had prospered we should have heard nothing but commendation of the motives which planned and the indomitable fortitude which achieved so perilous an expedition: it failed and therefore it is subjected to obloquy. Such is the state of the world in its estimate of human action and such it has been from the days of Nelson - when he disobeyed orders at Copenhagen and would probably have been shot if success had not been his apology - to the present hour. ‎‘November 1937. Written from’ ‘Parent Centre “Eversley†Thorpe-le-Soken Essex.’. The item advertised in the present prospectus no other copy of which has been traced is unaccountably absent from the bibliography of the Victorian author Charles Kingsley. Information regarding the Universal Group of Intuitives was provided to ‘Light’ the journal of the Spiritualist Alliance by its General Secretary Mrs Frances Boltwood ‘Angela’ and appeared in its number of 10 September 1936. The UGI was according to Mrs Boltwood ‘guided in all its activities by its leader and founder Charles Kingsley Canon Author and Poet 1819-1875 . It came into being through the mission work which was founded by Charles Kingsley and opened in the home of Mr. and Mrs. C. D. Boltwood at 6 Milverton Gardens Seven Kings. This was begun on November 20th 1932. Angela’s Healing Sanctuary has been a definite part of the work.’ ‘Angela’ was based at the ‘First Church’ at Grosvenor Hall 45 Grosvenor Road Ilford. The ‘New Headquarters’ a ‘Father-Mother Church Healing Sanctuary and Rest Home’ was claimed to be ‘dedicated’ by Kingsley in 1936. No other copy traced. 3pp 12mo. Bifolium. A frail ephemeral survival. In poor condition creased and pitted with loss to lower corners of both leaves not affecting text and pitting and holes. The front cover carries a photographic portrait of a smiling ‘Angela’. i.e. Mrs Boltwood. The book is said to have been written by Kingsley ‘Through the trance Mediumship of Crusader’ i.e. Mr Boltwood. The prospectus is written in the form of a two-page letter from ‘Angela’ to ‘Dear Universal Reader’. She reports that she has ‘separated from the world’ and has willingly given herself up ‘to the work of providing by demonstration the Truth of the teachings brought by our Leader and Founder Charles Kingsley’. She notes that ‘Many members - now over two hundred - have contributed to the cost of publishing this Volume but without the greater assistance of Miss K. M. Pearson it would have been impossible for a while to have published the First Volume. The meeting of many expenses which have occurred in establishing the Universal Group of Intuitives has been largely due to Miss Pearson giving the greater part of her earthly income.’ The book itself is scarce with JISC only listing copies at the BL Cambridge and Trinity College Dublin. Despite the importunings of ‘Angela’ and ‘Crusader’ Kingsley does not appear to have been inclined to complete his magnum opus. By 1950 Charles Dennis Boltwood 1889-1985 had grown disattisfied with Kingsley. He was ordained a priest of the Free Protestant Episcopal Church and ten years later he was a bishop and its leader. ‘November, 1937. The letterhead carries an engraving 6.5 x 9.5 cm of a pile of books quill pen and ink pot with text advertising the 'Imprimerie Librairie et Cabinet de Lecture d'Aubin' printed on the open pages of one of the volumes. Beneath the illustration are the words 'LE MÉMORIAL D'AIX journal politique et littéraire' and there is further text to the right and left of it. In French. Written in two hands in light blue ink. A five-line initial note asking for the books to be quoted at the lowest possible price is followed by the list in another hand in two columns continuing to the end of the second page. Despite criticism for his supposedly sexist humour Hill’s work was admired by men from the novelist Anthony Burgess to Michael Jackson and Burt Reynolds. See his entry in the Oxford DNB. In good condition lightly aged with light traces of glue from mount on reverse. An 8.5 x 14 cm photographic print carrying an 8.5 x 10.5 cm black and white head and shoulders shot of a smirking Hill staring fixedly at the viewer in black top.
