Humorous Poem Two copies of the typescript of a humorous poem titled 'Lines Written in Contemplation of the King's Bodyguard for Scotland 1937.'
1937. One copy headed in manuscript: 'From T. B. SIMPSON 11/6/49.'. Each of the two typescripts is on one side of a piece of A4 paper. One is signed in type at end 'T. B.S.' and the other which appears to be mimeographed carries what is presumably Simpson's signature at head in the manuscript note: 'From T. B. SIMPSON 11/6/49.' Text of each clear and complete on creased and aged paper. Apart from the typed signature to the one copy and the fact that one copy has square brackets and the other curved the two texts are identical. The poem consists of six four-line stanzas with the first reading: 'Between the Palace and the Hill Behold the ranks of archers stand! They are not standing straight or still And yet the spectacle is grand.' The fifth stanza consists of some 'fragments of dialogue': '"Have you got heather-beetle still" "This year the plovers' eggs were late." "What do you think of Herbert's Bill" "My God! I've dropped my dental plate." In the last stanza 'the Monarch' is said to know 'That he is guarded by those bows Which few can hold and fewer draw.' 1937. [One copy headed in manuscript: 'From T. B. With very scarce photographic plates throughout the work deals with town of Bar Harbour Maine previously known as Eden and sets its story there. In calf binding with gilt detailing. Externally sound there is wear and rubbing to extremities as well as markings to boards and cracking to joints with some wear to the joints and backstrip. 'IPOH 11th MAY 1933.' 'Printed at the Kuang Ming Press Ipoh. Malaya'. Printed in blue on one side of a piece of white paper roughly 60 x 40 cm. Good: lightly-aged and creased. The text is enclosed within an ornate decorative border and is headed 'Charles Ingle Robinson Esqr. B. Sc. Lond. Associate R. S. M. M. I. C. E. M. I. M. M. Senior Inspector of Mines F. M. S.' This is followed by nineteen lines expressing 'deep regret and genuine sorrow' at his 'departure for Europe on retirement'. 'You earliest appointment in Malaya was one in this State of Perak and we hardly realise that twenty-one years have elapsed since you first came amongst us in 1912 so rapidly and imperceptibly has Father Time stolen a march on us all.' Among Robinson's qualities is the 'thoroughly unbiassed and unprejudiced' manner in which he as dealt with 'the many nationalities and races which inhabit this Peninsula'. At the foot of the document the names of sixty-eight employees are arranged in four columns under the headings 'PERAK.' 'SELANGOR.' 'NEGRI SEMBILAN.' and 'PAHANG.' The first name is 'LEONG SIN NAM M.C.H.M.S.C.J.P.' and the last 'CHAN SANG.' 'IPOH 11th MAY, 1933.' ['Printed at the Kuang Ming Press, Ipoh. [Malaya]'] unknown

'232 Piccadilly London / Septem 28. 56' 1856. At the time of writing Gordon-Cumming’s trophies were being exhibited at this Piccadilly address having previously formed part of the Great Exhibition. The recipient Henry Charles Angelo 1806-1866 was a member of the celebrated family of fencing masters and was at this time teaching the art at the Cavalry College Richmond. 2pp 12mo. On the rectos of the two leaves of a bifolium with the recipient’s name written lengthwise on the verso of the first leaf: ‘H. C. Angelo Esqr’. In good condition lightly aged. Folded twice. The sort of bold and forceful hand and ebullient signature one might expect from a big game hunter. Reads: ‘Dear Sir / I have forwarded your letter to Sir Alexander. his address is Altyre. Forres. if you send a pampered menial last two words underlined to my house-keeper Mrs Lee at the museum and shew this note she will give him the portrait you require. / Yours faithfully. / Gordon Cumming’. c. 1818 London: Printed by G. Brimmer 15 Water-lane Fleet-street; and sold by G. and I. Offer Postern Row Tower Hill and J. Higham 6 Chiswell Street. On one side of a piece of unwatermarked wove paper 32 x 25 cm. Good on lightly aged and creased paper. Attractively produced within a decorative border with the title in gothic script and the text beginning in a single column before splitting into two. Printer's and publishers' details at foot with advertisement of five works published between 1815 and 1817. After three scriptural quotations begins 'ALL Sinners who are arrested by the HOLY SPIRIT tried in the Court of Conscience cursed and condemned by the just and holy law of God and in consequence thereof become willing to serve his Majesty JEHOVAH in the Royal Regiment of SAINTS and in CAPTAIN IMMANUEL's Company or NEW JERUSALEM where the company now lies; .'. Contains two poems: the first 26 lines beginning 'These soldiers are bold and well they may Since Christ their Captain leads the way;' and the second 16 lines 'GIRD thy loins up Christian Soldier Lo! thy Captain calls thee out;'. The central conceit of this piece - especially effective during the high militarisation resulting from the Napoleonic Wars - would later be taken to the ultimate extreme by the Salvation Army. A single copy of an earlier version produced in 1791 and with significant variations is held by the Bodleian. Excessively scarce: no copy on COPAC. According to BBTI Brimmer was active between 1802 and 1824 and George Offer no G. and I. Offer in Postern Row before 1794 and until 1824. [c. 1818] London: Printed by G. Charting the history and development of the history of shipbuilding in relation to the Scott Family. The volume is prefaced with a brief history of the Scott family from its origin in 1711 up until the time of publication that being 1950. Throughout charting this personal history the book explores the continued development of shipbuilding industry starting with 'The Era of Sailing Ships' through to 'The Engine and Boiler Works'. With gilt embossed detail to the front board reads 'H.M.S Puma'. H.M.S Puma was a Type 41 Leopard class British Royal Navy warship. Illustrated with plates and in text diagrams and illustrations. Collated complete. In full morocco binding with gilt detailing to the front board. Externally rubbed. Rubbing to the head and tail of the spine to the joints and to the extremities. Rubbing to the front and rear boards resulting in s a small amount of ls. Scratch to the rear board. Offsetting to the front and rear pastedowns and endpapers. Agetoning to the topedge foredge and bottomedge. Front and rear hinges are strained but firm. Internally firmly bound. Pages are generally clean. Slight offsetting to the title page and frontispiece.
