‘The Tichborne Claimant’: the soi-disant Sir Roger Charles Doughty-Tichborne held to be an imposter named Arthur Orton. Signed Autograph inscription as ‘R. C. D. Tichborne’ with Signed Autograph inscription by Major-General Arthur Phelps.
Inscription by the Tichborne Claimant dated 6 March 1893. Inscription by Phelps dated 9 December 1890. The Tichborne Case was very possibly the greatest scandal of Victorian England. See the entry for ‘Tichborne claimant’ with subheading for ‘Arthur Orton’ in the Oxford DNB. Trained as a civil engineer Major-General Arthur Phelps 1837-1920 civil engineer was a prominent homeopath anti-vaccinationist and anti-vivisectionist who promoted his views as proprietor and editor of the Citizen newspaper. Each inscription is on one side of a single 11.5 x 18.5 cm piece of gilt-edged wove paper presumably extracted from an autograph album. In good condition lightly aged with small patch of minor discoloration at the foot. In the claimant’s distinctive hand at the head of the verso: ‘Norwich. / March 6th/93 / Yours truly / R. C. D. Tichborne’. And on the recto: ‘Inoculating one disease in a child in order to prevent his taking another is like sowing dandelion seeds on the lawn to prevent weeds from growing on it. / A. Phelps / 9th. December 1890.’ Between the signature and date in a contemporary hand: ‘Major-General of the Indian Army’. See Image. Inscription by the Tichborne Claimant dated 6 March 1893. Countess Theresa Pulszky wife of Hungarian nationalist Count Ferenc Pulszky. Autograph Letter Signed in English to Sabilla Novello describing her ‘Dante festivals’ and artistic activities in Florence.
‘Villa Petrovitz Sulla Costa / Florence June 3d 1865’. The Pulskys had fled Austria-Hungary during the Hungarian Revolution of 1848 and while in London the Countess had published her well-received ‘Memoirs of a Hungarian Lady’. They would only be allowed back under an imperial amnesty in the year after this letter in 1866. The recipient Sabilla Novello was the daughter of London music publisher Vincent Novello and sister of Alfred and Clara Novello the ‘Countess Gigliucci’ referred to in the letter all three of whom have entries in the Oxford DNB. 4pp 12mo. On bifolium. Aged and worn with archival tape repair to extremities and slight loss at top outer corners of both leaves resulting in loss of the last two letters of ‘Costa’ in the address. Seventy lines of text. Signed ‘Therese Pulszky’. The first paragraph reads: ‘My dear Miss Novello / Far from being comforted at your and Mr. Alfred’s absence during the Dante festivals we are still lamenting it. If you had seen how nicely we had arranged everything for you! The Marchisio sang Gounod Becker played his splendid violin gloriously Salvini and Rossi recited at our party which we had combined for you with a tableau of Dante Beatrice Gemma Donati etc etc in the garden illuminations by bon-fires about 350 guests were assembled all for you and you did not come. Oh! Sabilla what ought not to be fine for such transgression!’ The letter continues with news of ‘Lamonica’ and his ‘portraits and frames’ ‘Will you come on a visit to us to see the portraits to suggest any alteration before they are dispatched’ and plans for a trip to Leghorn. She reports that they have had ‘plenty of trouble since we saw you about the management of our afairs in Hungary. but likewise plenty of pleasure’: ‘One great enjoyment to me was to play classic music with Becker’. She reports that ‘Harriet is rosy and bright singing like a lark’ ‘Mr. Pulszky is busy in many ways; my mother is pretty well and does not feel uncomfortable; Charlie Poli and Garibaldi are growing and shouting; - all remember you and Mr. Alfred’. Letter ‘Postmark: Belfast’ dated 30 October 1929. Newspaper cutting of Hood’s letter to The Times dated 28 October 1929. Undated anonymous note from 19 Sutton Court Road Chiswick London. Hood was married to the harpist Helen Patuffa Kennedy-Fraser 1889-1967 daughter of Marjory Kennedy-Fraser 1857-1930 the celebrated collector and singer of Hebridean songs. The two items are in good condition lightly aged. ONE: Manuscript Letter Signed by ‘Ulster Scot.’ 1p 8vo. Begins: ‘Dear Rev Sir / Glad to see you took up the “cudgels†on behalf of the “Ulster Scot.â€â€™ The writer of the letter considers that the part played by this group ‘in building industry &c.’ was surpassed by their efforts ‘in cristainising sic and civilising the nations of the world’. Descending into sectarianism he continues: ‘The Roman Catholic Hierarchy judging from their public speeches would have us believe the very opposite. Like many another Scott I read with delight your article to the “Times†and on behalf of myself and others I return you my sincerest thanks’. TWO: Unsigned Note 1p 8vo addressed from ‘19 Sutton Court Road. / London. Chiswick. W.’ Clearly written by Roman Catholic businessman W. Vance Packman who corresponded from this address at the time. Reads: ‘It is a pity that you have failed to point out that all the above were Celtic Catholics in communion with Apostolic See’. Annotated by Hood: ‘My answer to this was that I was confining myself to facts.’ Laid down at the centre of the page is a newspaper cutting of a letter to The Times from ‘REV. J. C. F. HOOD The Vicarage Garstang Lancashire’ headed ‘Points from Letters / The Ulster Scott’. Begins: ‘Your columns lately have dealt with the achievements of Ulster Scots in the sphere of government law literature and science. May I extend the record into the sphere of religion It is sometimes forgotten that the foundations of civilization in Great Britain were laid to a great extent by men of that breed.’ Letter (‘Postmark: Belfast’) dated 30 October 1929. Passionnant livre de Robert Greenfield, traduit par Philippe Paringaux, qui sur presque 400 pages, narre le parcours chaotique de l'expérience américaine des Rolling Stones dans les années 70, avec débauches Stoniennes, 100 % pur Rock n’ Roll. Le plus culte des livres publiés dans la collection Speed 17. Rarissime édition originale en état général, juste correct.
