(Agnew, Spiro; Hamar, Sherman C.). Butler, Richard (1918-2004). White supremacist founder of the Neo-Nazi Aryan Nations.
RARE 1964 WHITE SUPREMACIST "CHRISTIAN DEFENSE NEWS" RACIST & ANTI-SEMITIC BROADSIDE on Newspaper Stock. This Broadside accompanied by 2 letters signed by Sherman C. Hamar was mailed to SPYRO AGNEW Richard Nixon's future Vice-President who was then running for the office of Governor of Maryland.
Los Angeles CA: Christian Defense League 1964. 1964. Fine. - Folio a 22-1/2 inches high by 16 inches wide broadside. The May 13 1964 Volume One Number One issue of the "Christian Defense News" broadside is printed on newspaper stock. Titled below the banner headline proclaiming "Extra! Extra!" the broadside consists of provocative articles and photographic illustrations under bold headings such as "'White Christians' Now a Minority Group' says Editor" "Enemies of Christianity on the March" and "Bible Out Of Schools". Folded several times for mailing else fine.
A 2-page mechanically reproduced letter signed by Sherman C. Hamar typed on both sides of legal-sized 14 inch high by 8-1/2 inch wide paper is addressed "Dear Friend". Dated September 1966 the letter appears to be intended as a list of talking points for Republican candidates and lists 45 points drawn from the January 10 1963 Congressional Record which the author views as demonstrating that the Communist party intends to take over the United States. He includes "Eliminate the House Committee on Un-American Activities" which in conjunction with Joseph McCarthy's efforts in the Senate had conducted witch hunts and was responsible for the Hollywood black list. Seven numbers are penned in blue ink at the top of the first page no doubt in order to emphasize the corresponding points.
An additional 8-page mechanically-reproduced letter printed on both sides of 4 sheets of legal-sized 14 inch high by 8-1/2 inch wide paper bears the heading "A Republican Christian Congress in '66. Be Informed." Dated May 1966 and signed by Sherman C. Hamar the letter outlines strategies which the party should employ while subtly supporting anti-Communist White Christian and White Supremacist values. "You can & must win" is penned in blue ink at the top of the first page. There are several paper clip stains to the top edges of the first and last pages.
The broadside and letters were mailed to Spiro Agnew who was then running for Governor of Maryland and includes an original postmarked mailing envelope.
PROVENANCE: From the estate of Vice President Spiro T. Agnew's Chief-of-Staff Arthur J. Sohmer.
Spiro T. Agnew 1918-1996 was Governor of Maryland and Vice President of the United States under Nixon. He was indicted for tax fraud and forced to resign.
The American white supremacist Richard Butler 1918-2004 dedicated himself to the Christian Identity movement and founded the Neo-Nazi group Aryan Nations in the 1970s. After studying aeronautical engineering and science Butler was sent to India by his company to work on aircrafts for the Royal Indian Air Force. Some assert that his experience with the caste system influenced his later beliefs. Though he joined the Army Air Corps at the start of the Second World War Butler never saw action. He became increasingly Anti-Semetic and Anti-Communist during that period. Influenced by William Porter Gale and also the Klansman and pastor of the Anglo-Saxon Christian Congregation Wesley Swift Butler joined the Christian Identity movement. In the 1960's Butler was involved with the California Rangers the paramilitary arm of the Christian Defense League and in 1970 took over from Henry Beach as the leader of Posse Comitatus. Purchasing a large piece of land at Hayden Lake Idaho Butler founded the Aryan Nations group as a political wing of the racist white supremacist Church of Jesus Christ Christian. Los Angeles, CA: Christian Defense League, 1964. unknown

(Anonymous German Air Force Colonel, attributed to). Issued by the Military Intelligence Division, US. War Department U. S.
Cover Title: Decline of the G.A.F.
no place: no publisher 1945. Hardcover. Near Fine. First edition. Quarto. 13 1 ff. typescript or carbon copy on onion skin printed rectos only. Bound into clothbacked card covers by threaded plastic lugs lacking one possibly two with a photographic frontispiece laid down on cover. A bit of wear on the spine and the upper holes of the first couple of leaves else just about fine. The photographic frontispiece shows a graph the German Air Force's operational strength beginning at Stalingrad in the form of an airplane's trajectory which plummets in 1945.

According to the first page this document contains information on reasons for the decline of the German Air Force "obtained from a German Air Force Colonel captured 1 January 1945. Received in Britain 15 March 1945. Note: At the time of his capture this prisoner was in command of a Fighter Wing. He has written what follows below in the hope that it may ultimately help to assure that responsibility for disasters which have overtaken the G.A.F. and for the catastrophe thus brought on Germany herself may rest where it properly belongs."

A purported history of German WWII air combat and an analysis of the German Air Force's failings by a captured Colonel who claims to have been both a Gruppenkommandeur and Geschwaderkommodor. He seems to believe that as the enemy's tactics and technology changed a lack of far-sighted planning changes sometimes taking six months to be implemented did the G.A.F. in.

The plot thickens. According to a penciled note on the final leaf signed "FJUA" "The above is actually a recorded 'cut-in' taken at CSDIC UK early 1945 from 'M' room." "M" for "miked" room was the location of an intelligence operation that secretly recorded the conversations of over 10000 German PoWs. CSDIC stands for "Combined Services Detailed Interrogation Centre." The U.K. CSDIC CSDICI-Z Section was located at 49 St. George's Drive Pimlico London. While we can't validate FJU's claim this doesn't seem to be a publication made as propaganda for a wide audience.

The account closes thusly: "For A. C. of S. G-2" which we understand to mean "the head of intelligence for the Army Chief of Staff." And below: "/s/P.E. Peabody" Paul E. Peabody who is identified as a Brigadier General and Chief of the Military Intelligence Service. We surmise it was published for internal use.

A purported first-hand account of the failings of the German Air Force by a captured Nazi Colonel apparently recorded in one of the major Allied intelligence operations of World War II. Rare. OCLC locates two copies both in U.S. military libraries. no publisher] hardcover

(ARAGO, DOMINIQUE- FRANCOIS). - THE DISCOVERY OF MAGNETIZATION BY WAY OF THE VOLTAIC CURRENT.
Expériences relatives à l'aimantation du fer et de l'acier par l'action du courant voltaïque.
Paris Crochard 1820. No wrappers as extracted fron 'Annales de Chimie et de Physique' Volume 15 2e Series. Pp. 93-102.

First appearance of this importent paper in which Arago gives an account of his discovery of how iron and steel could be magnetized by the action of the voltaic current THE FIRST STEP TOWARDS THE ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH. "Arago . made several important contributions to electromagnetism on his own. On 20 September 1820 he announced the discovery of the temporary magnetization of soft iron by an electric current which suggested to Ampère a theory about the nature of magnetic "currents" and provided the technological key to the electric telegraph. Ampère calculated that the magnetic power could be multiplied by twisting the current-carrying wire into a helix and with Arago he carried out the first experiments on primitive solenoids. In his historical articles Arago was always careful to credit Ampère with the major share of this discovery which ultimately depended upon Ampère’s mathematical theory."DSB.Arago formed a close freinship with Fresnelwhose views on the nature of light he ardently supported. He assisted Fresnel in some of his most importent work and made original discoveries in the same field.Magie "A Source Book in Physics" p. 443 ff. unknown

(ARMY OF THE TENNESSEE)
Report of the Proceedings of the Society of the Army of Tennessee at the Eleventh Annual Meeting Held at St. Paul Minnesota September 5th and 6th 1877
Cincinnati: The Society 1885. Hardcover. Small 4to. Emerald green blind-embossed pebble-grained cloth over beveled boards with gilt lettering and decorations. 486pp 14pp. Color frontispiece 2 foldout maps one color. Near fine. Exceptionally "tight 'n' bright" first edition of this reunion series here containing reports for the 11th 12th and 13th proceedings. Pristine maps titled "Battlefield / 22nd of July 1864 / before / ATLANTA" and partly-color "Battle of / ATLANTA / July 22d 1864." This unusually fresh copy -- gilt as bright as the day published -- bears the huge and bold ownership signature on inner flyleaf of "D.B. Henderson / Dubuque Iowa / Sept 9 1885." David B. Henderson 1840-1906 served Congress as U.S. Representative from Iowa from 1883 to 1903 and as Speaker of the House from 1899 to 1903 -- more importantly he served valiantly in the Union army from 1861 to 1864 getting shot in the neck at the Battle of Fort Donelson and losing a foot and part of a leg in the Second Battle of Corinth both in 1862. Interestingly the membership roster near the close does NOT list Henderson as a member. The 14 pages of Society officers from its inception in 1865 until 1878 is an incredible "Who's Who" of the military mighty Generals John Rawlins John A. Logan O.O. Howar G.M. Dodge William T. Sherman John Pope etc. A most unusual copy in cannot-be-beat condition. The Society hardcover
