Contemporary Cosway style binding of full purple grained calf the boards blocked in gilt with arabesques and corner ornaments spine gilt in compartments and lettered direct. The upper cover with the watercolour on vellum Arms of the Earl of Thanet heightened with gold within oval frame under glass . The lower cover blocked in gilt with the letter "T". Wide inner gilt dentelles. All edges gilt. In excellent condition. Inscribed by the author to the dedicatee of this work "To the Right Honourable the Earl of Thanet with the Authors' best respects". An uncommon work only 4 copies cited by Copac.From 1844 to 1846 Caunter 1792 1851 was Rector of Hailsham Sussex. In 1845 a young woman Elizabeth Taylor brought an action against Caunter alleging that he had promised to marry her within a certain time and had failed to do so. She claimed £3000 in damages. Caunter had previously paid for her education for some years. The counsel for the defendant stated the action had arisen from a "serious misunderstanding" between the parties. On the arrangement that the case be kept out of the papers a verdict was taken by consent for £750 plus £177 in costs. Newspaper reports appeared regardless. In 1850 he was arrested and appeared before the Court for Relief of Insolvent Debtors in Lincoln's-Inn. He explained that he had paid most of the damages he had been required to pay Elizabeth Taylor; his income had since suffered due to the publicity about the case. He declared that his writings did not bring him any income as they were not on popular subjects. Days before his death in 1851 he was awarded financial assistance from the Royal Literary Fund. Major-General Sir George Jeffreys (1878-1960) was commissioned in the Grenadier Guards in 1897. He served at the Nile, in the Second Boer War and extensively throughout WWI. Mentioned in despatches several times, he commanded 2Bn in 1915, subsequently 58th Brigade, 57th Brigade, and finally 1st (Guards) Brigade in 1916. In 1917 he was appointed GOC 19th Division. Post-war he served as GOC Light Division British Army of the Rhine and as GOCiC of Southern Command in India before his retirement in 1938. He was raised to the peerage as Baron Jeffreys in 1952. His association with the present work stems from his position as Deputy Lieutenant of the county of Hampshire, Chairman of the Hampshire Territorial Army Association and a decade or so as MP for Petersfield. Cavendish's paper: pp. 1-62. the torsion balance of Michell shown on the plates. <br/><br/><em>First German edition of Cavendish's famous paper in which he calculated the weight of the earth and determined its mass. He also as the first observed gravitational motion of minute portions of matter. He estimates the earth's mass to 66 x 10 to the potential of 24 kg. The original paper "Experiments to determine the Density of the Earth" appeared in Philosophical Transaction 1798."Cavendish published five papers between 1784 and 1809.With one exception they were comparatively minor productions.The exception was his determination of the density of the earth or weighing of the world in 1798 by means of John Michell's torsion balance. The apparatus consisted of two lead balls on either end of a suspended beam; these movable balls were attracted by a pair of stationary lead balls. Cavendish calculated the the force of attraction between the balls fro the observed period of oscillation of the balance and deduced the density of the earth from the force. He found it to be 5.48 times that of water. Cavendish was the first to observe gravitational motions induced by comparatively minute portions of ordinary matter.By weighing the world he rendered the law of gravitation complete. Today Playgirl is seriously collected throughout the world as nostalgia for a more innocent happier time Before The Internet and for the incomparably beautiful men who graced its pages. Cayley's paper: pp. 259-261 <br/><br/><em>Fitrst appearance of Cayley's famous paper on the Four-Colour-Problem"The four-colour map problem to prove that on any map only four colours are needed to separate countries is celebrated in mathematics. It resisted the attempts of able mathematicians for over a century and when it was successfully proved in 1976 the ‘computer proof’ was controversial: it did not allow scrutiny in the conventional way. At the height of his influence in 1878 Arthur Cayley had drawn attention to the problem at a meeting of the London Mathematical Society and it was duly ‘announced’ in print. the paper offered. He made a short contribution himself and he encouraged the young A. B. Kempe to publish a paper on the subject. Though ultimately unsuccessful the work of Cayley and Kempe in the late 1870s brought valuable insights. Francis Galton is revealed as the ‘go-between’ in suggesting Cayley publish his observations in Proceedings of the Royal Geographical Society."
