(WOMEN'S RIGHTS). [HALE, SARAH JOSEPHA]. "THE AUTHOR OF 'MY COUSIN MARY'
THE LECTURESS: OR WOMAN'S SPHERE
Boston: Whipple and Damrell 1839. FIRST EDITION. 155 x 95 mm. 6 x 3 3/4". 124 pp. 1 leaf ads.
Original brown printed paper wrappers flat spine inside wrappers and back cover with ads discreet repairs to upper corners of front cover. Housed in a fine custom made green cloth drop-back box. Wright I 1081. For the author see: Oxford Companion to Women's Writing in the United States pp. 371-72; Feminist Companion to Literature in English pp. 474-75. See also: Ganter "The Unexceptional Eloquence of Sarah Josepha Hale's 'The Lecturess'" in "Journal of the American Antiquarian Society" 2004. Covers vaguely soiled front corners a little creased text with frequent foxing sometimes noticeable due to paper quality but still an extremely well-preserved copy of a fragile item with joints and hinges as good as new.

In an excellent state of preservation in its original wrappers this is the first known American novel featuring a women's rights activist written by one of the 19th century's leading editors and tastemakers. The story follows Marian Gaylord an educated and outspoken young woman who earns a living by lecturing on the importance of female education. As the story progresses Marian's attempts to step into public life bring serious personal consequences affecting her reputation relationships and health. At the novel's end Marian on her deathbed repents her lifestyle to a close friend telling her that "approaching death has taught me how wrong were all my opinions. It taught me that true pride true independence in a woman is to fill the place which her God assigns her; to make her husband's happiness her own and to yield her will to his in all things." Despite the author's apparent belief that woman's natural place is in the home Sarah Josepha Hale 1788-1879 was herself a successful career woman and seems to have been as progressive as often as she was conservative on a number of issues related to women's rights. According to ANB "In an age when women were regarded as natural invalids confined to the home she urged the necessity for women doctors women nurses and women teachers and helped found schools for their training; she advocated physical exercise and fresh air for women sensible dress and an end to tight lacing. In addition she supported the use of any labor-saving devices that would make domestic work easier such as the sewing machine and the washing machine and in spite of religious opposition she fought for the use of anesthesia for surgery and in childbirth." Hale was not however a suffragist and the "Oxford Companion to Women's Writing in the United States" notes that "Debate continues about the nature of Hale's feminism. Some scholars criticize her as a proponent of 'women's sphere'; as a believer in women's moral superiority she expected women to provide spiritual leadership for western civilization and for the Christianization of the world. . . . But she disliked women public speakers abolitionists and women's rights proponents. Yet she advocated property rights for married women female doctors and in her later life support for working women." Despite displaying considerable ambivalence in the world of emerging feminism Hale is acknowledged by modern scholars as having an important role in literary history being "the most prominent American woman engaged in literary enterprise in the mid-nineteenth century" and "the first of the great 'lady editors." Oxford Companion Widowed at the age of 34 and with five children to support Hale turned to writing to provide a living for her family. Her first successful novel "Northwood" 1827 is considered to be "one of the first American novels to deal with the question of slavery." ANB She also wrote children's books and poetry including the popular nursery rhyme "Mary Had a Little Lamb." Her success led to editorial positions at "Ladies' Magazine" and "Godey's Lady's Book" where she remained for 40 years. There she made her most enduring marks on American culture publishing original work by American writers particularly women campaigning for causes such as the Bunker Hill Monument and a national Thanksgiving Day and promoting female education including the founding of Vassar College. "The Lecturess" is a very rare book in the marketplace: we could find just one rather dog-eared copy sold at auction fetching $6930 at Christie's in 2023. Whipple and Damrell unknown

(WORK OF THE CHARIOT) BLOXSOM, Daniel E
Book of Formation Sefer Yetzirah. The Letters of Our Father Abraham.
Hollywood: Work of the Chariot 1971. Second and expanded edition. Quarto. 76 pp. English text from right opening and Hebrew text from left opening with numerous charts and diagrams in the middle.Publisher's printed blue wrappers stapled. Front top left corner with a small crease else very good. The Book of Formation is one of the earliest and most influential texts in Jewish mysticism Kabbalah and Bloxsom's edition of it is considered particularly important. Bloxsom a physicist by trade led a group that met informally at Thursday-night sessions in his home. This translation was often referred to as a group efort but really Bloxsom was the leader in all respects. Bloxsom wanted to bring this seminal text to the New Age practitioners of the 197os. This led to this translation of the Sefer which included illustrations to make the work more accessible. Bloxsom emphasized direct experiential understanding of Qabalistic symbols rather than the usual dry academic study. As a trained physicist he encouraged treating mystical work as experiments. Distribution was very small; they were usually placed in sympatico metaphysical bookstores that catered to spiritual seekers. And the 1970s were chock-a-block full of spiritual seekers. Due to its flimsy nature original copies are now very difficult to find. OCLC only records two copies of the shorter first edition of 1970 and three copies of this second edition. He must have had a powerful message and personality as his work has been revised and expanded by one of his chief pupils Daniel Feldman in 2001 Qabalah: The Mystical Heritage of the Children of Abraham and continues to be used to this day. (WORLD WAR II IN THE PHILIPPINES)
An American GI Fighting In The Philippines Writes About The Conflict: Weve Had Casualties But One Has To Expect Some Especially When Fighting An Offensive War - The Japs Being Dug In So Well It Was Almost A Superhumanjob To Clear Out Them
WORLD WAR II IN THE PHILIPPINES. ALS. 3pg. 6 x 10 . June 6 1945. Philippine Islands. An autograph letter signed Claude an American GI stationed in the Philippines. He wrote on United States Army stationery to his friend John about fighting the Japanese: Dear John Was sure glad to hear from you again Thanks for writing. A lot has happened since I last wrote - but I won't bore you with very much of them - Have seen quite a bit of action. Mostly fighting n razor back mountains either covered with grass or off on another part of the island covered with jungle - It seemed we moved from one land to another - such a change in terrain - I mean like thick jungles vines & dampness at one place & the other so open one could see for miles and miles - even watch the japs digging in miles away with our binoculars. Weve had casualties but one has to expect some especially when fighting an offensive war - The japs being dug in so well it was almost a superhumanjob to clear out them - Rough going - guess I'm a lucky guy to be in the 60MM Mortar and light Machine Gun platoon - although we were hit some too. Lucky though just wounded were the boys. Well my Platoon Sgt. Went home with a bad ear - got infected someway or other and it really made life miserable for him - so now I'm acting in his compacity - I don't care much for the job but guess I'll have to string along until the end is over which I hope soon. Guess old Nick here was lucky - Had a few close one's too close for comfort. just hope my luck holds on. Guess as far as the point system goes - I'll be in the Army quite awhile yet. Only can figure out 69 points - Quite a jump to dig up 16 more And I've been in this Army 38 months already - Seems like half my life - When I get home I won't know how to act like a civilian - ha - I know one thing I'll have to learn to control my Army slang or else - I'm writing this in our rest area - although we aren't resting as yet - A lot of hard work to build it up & get it in shape first - Havent been her long - but it's a nice area - About like Fort Lewis. Pine trees - cold at night need three blankets still my pups get cold and now that the rainy season has set in it reminds me of Fort Lewis more so as we had so much rain there. Have one camp on a golf course - Been quite some time since I played golf - last tie in the Hawaiian Is. on the isle of Moloka! - More or less pasture. I'd send you a v-mail but as far as I know yet they go straight home with out being photographed and I don't think you'd want that kind. So am using the borderless airmail variety - No two cent overprints have showed up in this area as but if they do I'll remember you - Some of my other friends were asking about them too. Mr. Weltack has been sending me a first day cover now and then and I really appreciate it - as I have no way or time to bother with them. Hope I can continue after the war as I really get a kick out of FD. 's F.Fs F.AM's & all the other better covers. I belonged to the AAMS at one time and have been thinking about joining the MACC in the future. Its been a long time since I saw a good game of baseball- Was in 1939 I guess - In Chicago at the Cub park - The Cubs were playing the Giants at the time. My dad & cousin are great Cub fans but me I like to see a good game - The best men win - I used to play a little too. You know how young guys are - getting up a team & trying to lick the neighboring town teams a log of good clean fun. Well John write when you have time. I enjoy hearing from you. Best of Wishes Sincerely Claude. The letter is in fine condition. unknown
