He joined the diplomatic service in 1908 trained for two years and was posted to Constantinople in 1910 “but in September a slight fever was diagnosed as tuberculosis and he returned to England to a sanatorium. He pronounced himself cured and … went back to Constantinople in March 1911 to be transferred in April to Beirut. Flecker was not a very efficient vice-consul†ODNB. His first formal collection of verse The Bridge of Fire was published in 1907 and The Golden Journey to Samarkand was published in 1913. He died in Switzerland aged thirty-one.<br /> Lawrence knew Flecker in Beirut before the war. “Flecker probably introduced Lawrence to contemporary poetry†wrote Wilson in his introduction to Minorities 1971. <br /> According to O'Brien An Essay on Flecker was “written in 1925 with the intention of publication in a periodical and did not appear in print until 1937â€. The sequence of illustrations from left to right are as follows: "Jack rescuing the Knight & his Lady from the Giant" "Jack persuading the Giant to rip open his stomach" and "The Welch Giant trying to break Jack's bones." Though unsigned they are in the style of George Cruikshank or John Leech both of whom illustrated this popular English fairy tale. The design and the hand-coloring is also similar to the chapbooks and broadsides published by John Fairburn in the early 19th century. Very good with moderate soiling to the edges and two creases from where the sheet had been folded in thirds. Unique. not indicated unknown

The work is one of the most importent anti-Cartesian polemics of the 1690's and it attacs the whole of Descartes system in a satirical way."It aimes principally at the sharp Cartesian distinction between body and soul related in a satirical fashion the voyage of the disembodied souls of the narrator of Mersanne and of another old friend of Descartes in the upper spheres. On their way to visit Descartes in the third heaven they meet the souls of Aristotle and the disciples of descartes clearly refelcting here the philosophical opinions of Gabriel Daniel himself. One of the articles of that treaty stipulates that the Cartesians will refer to Aristotle with more respect whereas the Aristotelians will refrain from calling Descartes "Enthusiast" "Madman" "Heretick" or "Atheist" - all of these evidently labels commonly used by the opponents of Descartes at that time."
