14 September 1839; Prague. 12mo 3 pp. Good on browned and lightly creased paper with some wear to extremities. In French. Long thorough order with instructions for delivery casting light on the logistical problems encountered in international trade in nineteenth-century Europe. Pražak is sending 'six pièces d'or à vingt francs ou une somme de 120 francs en or' and gives a list of four books he would like sent to him. There follows a discussion of the problems of delivering the books to Prague. When they met Carilian-Goeury said that he would charge for transporting the books 'jusque à Leipzig et que c'est a moi de faire venir les livres de Leipzig à Prague'. Pražak asks Carilian-Goeury to instruct his 'commissionaire' at Leipzig 'qu'il expédie le paquet par la diligence /:Postwagen:/' to his address and at his expence. He instructs Carilian-Goeury on what to do with the remaining money and asks him 'de faire porter le billet si-joint a M. Part of Autograph Letter Signed by the novelist Charles Reade to Manton Marble proprietor of the New York World asking that a 'gentleman' should not be 'my public critic in the World' and that the recipient should himself review his play.
Without place or date. Post 1860. 2pp. on both sides of the lower half of a 4to leaf. The recto is numbered by Reade '2' indicating that the two pages constitute the second leaf of a letter. The text reads: '. therefore you will consent to do me a bare act of justice viz not to let that gentleman be my public critic in "the World." Of course I should be still more pleased if you would do me the honor to see the play yourself and pronounce upon it. However half a loaf is better than no bread. - If you will secure me the silence of that unfair detractor of mine in your columns I will be content: because in that case I shall have a chance of fair play. Charles Richard Weld author. Printed notice of the election of ‘the Council and Officers of the Royal Society’ and ensuing dinner signed by Weld and addressed by him to W. Vaughan. With the Society’s seal in red wax.
‘From the Apartments of the Royal Society in Somerset Place Strand November 21st. 1844’. Weld and Vaughan both have entries in the Oxford DNB. The notice is printed in copperplate on the recto of the first leaf of a 4to bifolium. In fair condition aged and lightly worn with short closed tear to one edge and slight damage to the second leaf from the cutting of the seal which is present on the verso with a good impression in red wax together with two postmarks and the address in Weld’s hand to ‘W. Vaughan Esq - F.R.S. / 70 Fenchurch Street / Royal Society.’ The notice signed ‘C. R. Weld’ reads: ‘These are to give Notice that on the Thirtieth Day of November 1844 being ST. ANDREW’S day the Council and Officers of the Royal Society are to be Elected for the Year ensuing; at which Election Your Presence is expected at One amended in manucript to ‘Four’ of the Clock in the afternoon at the Apartments of the Royal Society in Somerset Place Strand.’ A postscript with manuscript emendations gives details of the dinner to follow the election ‘at the Crown & Anchor Tavern in the Strand’. ‘From the Apartments of the Royal Society [in Somerset Place, Strand], November 21st. 1844’. unknown

No place Dublin Ireland . 15 August no year . 1p. 4to. In fair condition aged and worn. The breaking open of the wafer has resulted in slight loss at the beginning of Maturin's signature. Addressed on reverse to 'William Spooner Esqre at Mr Millikin's Grafton Street'. His not writing of 'Dublin' implies that he is writing from the same place. Maturin was the great-uncle of Oscar Wilde who adopted the name 'Sebastian Melmoth' during his self-exile on the continent. A short but piquant letter reading: 'Dear Sir I enclose Sir Walter Scott's friendly letter - As authentic biography is more interesting than fictitious I will send you a memoir of my own family the events in which are as romantic as those in any tale with the advantage of being true - Sincerely yours <C.> R. 25 Mount Vernon Street Boston Massachusetts. 29 September 1884. 4pp. 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition lightly aged. The letter would appear to relate to the formation of the American Society for Psychical Research. Six days before the writing of the present letter on 23 September 1884 Minot had been a member of a committee of nine scientists who met at Boston to consider the advisability of the formation of a society for psychical research in America William James being another member. Minot begins the letter by informing Ramsay that 'in regard to the International Congress' 'The matter has progressed thus far favourably and the extent of the interest in the project surpasses our expectations'. He continues with reference to 'The American Committee' which has been given 'full powers to act' by 'the Amer. Asstn. We have already received a gift of £1000 with promise of more as a fund the income to be expended by the Congress for the prosecution of research.' He continues: 'No definite public announcements can be made until the Council B.A.A.S. i.e. the British Association for the Advancement of Science has taken action in regard to the enterprise. As soon as it is in my power I shall take the liberty of communicating with you again concerning our plans.' Ramsay 'will readily understand that so vast an undertaking necessarily matures slowly; at present we are still in the stage of tentative suggestion and no services can be more valuable than those which contribute to spreading interest in the movement.' He hopes that Ramsay 'will assist in this way. 20 March 1868 and May 24 1873 the first from 69 Eaton Place London and the second on the letterhead of the British Museum. Both 12mo 2 pp. On bifoliums the first with mourning border. Both texts clear and complete. Aged and lightly creased with the first item bearing traces of being mounted in an album. Letter One: He hopes to be 'present at the next Sessions' and will be 'quite prepared after the County business is over to attend the Committee of Subscribers to Sir William Heathcotes Portrait'. Letter Two: He has spoken to 'our Principal Librarian Mr Winter Jones John Winter Jones 1805-1881 Principal Librarian 1866-1873 who is at the head of this Establishment' and has left Yonge's letter 'in his hands as a Memorandum'. 'Whenever it may be convenient to you to visit the Museum - You will have nothing to do but to send in your Card and Mr Jones will be happy to give you every assistance in his power -'. He is 'delighted to hear that our new Buildings are making satisfactory progress'. It will give him 'still greater pleasure' to hear that Yonge has 'commenced the restoration of our grand Old Hall'. The recipient's identity is uncertain but there was clearly a connection between Eversley and the Yonges of Otterbourne House: according to J. B. Yonge's sister the novelist Charlotte Yonge 'John Keble's Parishes A History of Hursley and Otterbourne' at the time of the Reform Bill 'One consequence of the riotous state of the country was the raising of troops of volunteer yeomanry cavalry. Charles Shaw Lefevre Esq. afterwards Speaker and Lord Eversley was colonel . Letter One 12mo: 4 pp to 'My dear Mr Nichols' good on discoloured paper: Explains that he has given 'a note of introduction to a most particular friend of mine Mr Lawrence of Ipplepen near Totnes and Launceston Cornwall'. Lawrence 'was a great friend of the late Mr Arundel of Landulph' and is 'a great friend of Mr Bray of Tavistock'. He is 'a man of ancient Cornish descent & from its first families'. Spence thinks Nichol will find Lawrence 'a valuable West Country Correspondent well up in County history and nothing loth in the pursuit of antiquarian lore. In fine I am sure you will hereafter tell me that I have done well in introducing him to you'. Asks how 'we get on with the Camdens and when will more come out'. He is 'truly anxious to see some productions'. Prestwich Park Prestwich near Manchester; c.1853. 4pp. 12mo. Fair on lightly-aged paper. Addressed to 'My dear friend' and with the name of the recipient obliterated from the valediction: 'Will you give my sincere and grateful remembrances to your noble hearted husband and believe me dear <.> Every affectionately signed Charles Swain'. He can put off 'the evil day' no longer and must now 'give in to circumstances' and reluctantly inform her that he cannot come and visit. 'After all the enjoyment I promised myself in your society this is hard: and I go on picturing to myself your friendly faces and cordial welcome until my heart aches to see the impediments standing in the way of so much unnusual pleasure.' He feels sure she has been 'calling me all sorts of names' 'but something has occurred - which had to be met and set right:- and I am now left with as many more disjointed things to cope with as will take a month to remove'. In a postscript he conveys the regards of his wife and family before ending: 'A shake of the hand to my old friend Jerdan should you see him. - When is that 4th Vol to astonish the world' The reference is to the fourth volume of Jerdan's 'Autobiography' which appeared in 1853. East India College. 6 March 1831. 2pp. 4to. Bifolium. Two matching panels have been removed one each from the foot of each leaf removing the signature and some text from the first leaf. On aged paper with closed tears along crease lines. Addressed by Le Bas on the reverse of the second leaf with his seal in red wax and a postmark to 'S. S. Ward Esqre. Accountant General's office London'. Le Bas writes to express 'the relief & gratitude which I have derived from the assurance of your satisfaction with my humble efforts to do justice to the memory of Bishop Middleton. The reputation of such a man is public property; and fearful is the responsibility of him who presumes to lay his hand upon the ark of a treasure so sacred.' He continues in the same vein concluding with the postscript: 'P.S. You will be pleased perhaps surprized to hear that the Court of Directors have very kindly & liberally taken 40 Copies'. On letterhead of the 'Editorial Offices' of 'The Encyclopaedia of the British Empire' Adelphi Terrace Strand London. 12 April 1924. 1p. 4to. In good condition on lightly-aged paper. With the date stamps of the Royal Society of Arts. He thanks him for 'the cuttings several of which I had not seen' and states that he will be delighted to 'present a copy of my book to your library'. He had been meaning to give one 'at the conclusion of the exhibition'. He is grateful to Menzies for offering to review the book in the Society's journal and is 'already so much indebted to te Royal Society of Arts for kindness received'. The Society and Domville-Fife's offices were in close proximity. He is enclosing a copy of a book 'which is great undertaking when one has other duties to perform. The first run is 60000 copies and it is going all over the Empire'. The prospectus for 'The Encyclopaedia of the British Empire' 'The First Encyclopedic Record of the Greatest Empire in the History of the World.' is 4pp. 4to. With text in blue and cover strikingly printed in colour and depicting a lantern-jawed Englishman poring over a map of the British Empire. 'The most perfect ode in the English language': Charles Wolfe Irish poet. Photographic facsimile of Autograph Letter Signed to John Taylor containing the text of his celebrated poem ‘The Burial of Sir John Moore at Corunna’.
With facsimile of postmark dated 6 September 1816. No place but from Ireland. The present item gives the text of the poem described by Byron as 'the most perfect ode in the English language' before its first publication in the Newry Telegraph in April 1817. See Wolfe’s entry in the Oxford DNB. The source of the present item is unclear. It is a photographic facsimile many decades old on both sides of a 4to leaf. In fair condition slightly creased on browned paper with negligible loss to margin at head. With five creases from folding. Addressed to ‘John Taylor Esqe / at the Revd Mr. Armstrong’s / Clonoully / Cashel’. A good photographic facsimile of an autograph letter with nothing in Wolfe’s actual hand. The photograph indicates some damage to the original letter from the opening of the seal resulting in loss of a few words. The letter begins without salutation: ‘I have completed the Burial of Sir John Moore & will here inflict it upon you; you have no one but yourself to blame for praising the two stanzas that I told you so much -’. Wolfe now gives a fair copy of his celebrated poem numbering the eight stanzas. Apart from accidentals the only variations from the version published a few months later are ‘lanthorn’ for ‘lantern’ and ‘struck the note’ for ‘struck the hour’. The first seven stanzas fill up the first side of the letter after the opening paragraph with the eighth on the reverse which carries the address and postmark and the following: ‘Pray write soon - you may direct as usaly to Colley & it will follow me to the Country. Give my love to Armstrong & Believe me / My Dear John / Ever Yours / Charles Wolfe / I again say Remember Constantine Elizabeth is to be drawn among them - You will pardon me for being particular about any message from that quarter.’ With facsimile of postmark dated 6 September 1816. On his letterhead Lamley & Co. 1 3 & 5 Exhibition Road S.W.3. London 19 July 1931. R. J. L. Kingsford in his history of the Publishers Association describes Young as 'a bookseller of outstanding character and ability a friend of Arnold Bennett and the discoverer of the literary distinction of George Sturt'. 1p. 12mo. Neatly and closely written. Headed 'private' and addressed to 'Dear John'. Young is apparently following a dinner of the Publishers Association at which George Bernard Shaw was present and the subject of the letter would appear to be an exhibition Wilson's firm has mounted of books by the London publisher John Murray. He asks him not to allow his 'remarks of Thursday to drill too deeply into your mind'. From Wilson's 'early note' he fears his remarks may have been taken too seriously. 'Knowing you so well and as you will believe with so considerable a liking I thought you should be made aware of an outside impression which does exist though has not been expressed to me. It was a criticism of the publisher rather than of you. If you look at it from these outsiders point of view it resolves itself into propaganda for your firm.' From Young's own point of view 'such exhibitions can only do good to the Book trade and I am not minded to consider too personal a point of view. Now you may dismiss this matter from your mind – If Murrays and subsequent shows would make it clear that the books exhibited are on sale at all reputable bookshops it might be “A Good Thing†as the author of “1066 and all that†says.' Young concludes: 'I wish I'd stayed another few minutes. - & seen G. B. S. I liked herself very much.' From the papers of John G. <p>Venice - Its History Art Industries and Modern Life by Charles Yriarte translated from the French by F. J. Sitwell with numerous illustrations. Hardback first UK edition. London: George Bell and Sons York Street Covent Garden 1880. Large folio-sized work though page gatherings are quarto/4to measures around 11 3/4" x 15" by 1 3/4" with xix 317 pp. Publisher's original decorated cloth binding with blind-stamped detail. Black decoration to rear board black and gilt to front board and spine with gilt-blocked titles. A richly illustrated work with around 47 inserted plates and hundreds of engravings within the text.</p><p>Binding colouring and detail still quite vivid and quite clean only minor marking though a large area of discolouration and damp-staining to rear board. Some scuffing and wear to binding rubbing at edges and on hinges with bumped and slightly torn corners. Slackness to binding with cracking to inner hinges and fully detached at inner rear hinge with board and spine loose from textblock. Textblock itself reasonably firm albeit with some strain in places. Gilt upper page edges with some scuffing a little marking and dulling but still reasonably vivid. Lower and fore-edges a little browned scuffed slightly foxed and otherwise marked but reasonably clean for age. Small postage stamp type label with initials to front pastedown and year written beneath. A little loss to edges of pastedowns and a little marking and foxing to those and to preliminary and hindmost pages. Scattered foxing to page surfaces throughout mostly minor and maybe the occasional other mark but otherwise quite clean with no inscriptions underlining marginalia etc. See pictures for further information.</p> George Bell and Sons, York Street, Covent Garden hardcover

Leather covers. 1 leaf table of contents oddly paginated 260 top verso283; early small label to front pastedown 'Treasury Library/ Financial Room' marbled endpapers and edges internally clean tight and unmarked; front board detached rest of covers with gilt ruled edge lines is quite surface rubbed in places 1 cm chip across bottom spine and small chip top spine by top back joint. This edition seems to be remarkably rare none appearing on major web-sites at time of listing while a number of 1805 1st editions do so this has 283 pp. as opposed to 268 in 1st ed. however p.268 in this edition occurs in middle of solid text so unclear if length has actually been extended or text reset. Author died in 1808 so is unlikely to have changed much himself. This is a somewhat large and heavy item and if shipped outside of the United States will require additional shipping charges. The contents include an Introduction A Vision of Britain Ten Principles and Conclusion. The future King Charles III makes a personal plea for urban development that preserves the unique character and tradition of towns and cities arguing that architecture serves the aesthetic and practical needs of the average citizen. The Prince of Wales gives his views on the buildings in the United Kingdom. Before the book was released a BBC documentary was made called HRH Prince Of Wales: A Vision Of Britain. In the documentary the Prince visited buildings in the UK including Birmingham City Centre and gave his views on the buildings. Derived from an article found on-line. If you want to understand King Charles III and his strong views on human desire and drain pipes on social order and painted doors Poundsbury is the place. The monarch built this town. From scratch. Dismissed by his critics as a feudal Disneyland for nostalgists. Celebrated by its residents as livable and lovely. Officially Poundbury is an "autonomous urban extension" a community of about 4600 residents at the edge of Dorchester in south England just a few miles from the sea. Three home-building companies did most of the construction. Unofficially Poundbury is pure Charles. Of all the causes he championed while Britain's longest king-in-waiting of all his hundreds of millions in assets the town is perhaps his greatest obsession his most fully realized vision. It is the physical manifestation of the way he thinks Britons — everyone really — should live work and commune with each other. He had already declared war on modern architecture. He disdained a proposed addition to London's National Gallery as "a monstrous carbuncle on the face of a much-loved and elegant friend." He denigrated a planned Ludwig Mies van der Rohe skyscraper as "yet another giant glass stump better suited to downtown Chicago than the City of London." He scolded 700 architects assembled at a banquet that they were "ignoring the feelings and wishes of the mass of ordinary people in this country." He would go on to pursue this line of attack in speeches articles a documentary and his manifesto "A Vision for Britain." But the Poundbury project has been far more ambitious than a book. It has offered him a chance to go beyond words and images and to put his ideas about natural harmony and "sacred geometry" into practice. He hired Léon Krier a Luxembourgian architect and urban theorist to draw the master plan and over three decades the town has taken shape on what was once royal pasture land. Here the narrow lanes are curlicues like a medieval village with abundant courtyards alleyways and dead ends. There is not a single stop sign let alone traffic light. To avoid uniformity the town is a deliberate mash-up of architectural styles all looking to the past: Greek Revival forms Roman arcades Palladium ornamentation. Ersatz Georgian manors sit next to re-created country cottages next to mock Industrial Age warehouses now filled with low-rise luxury flats — and a nursing home. 20 June 1784. Paris. According to the Encyclopaedia Britannica it was de Calonne’s efforts at reform which precipitated the crisis which let to the French Revolution. The present item is on a 31 x 22 cm piece of parchment. In good condition lightly aged darkened with a couple of closed tears. On the front is the main document beginning with printed text in square brackets ‘Je Charles Pierre Lavalete Conseiller du Roi en ses Conseils Garde de son Trésor Royal confesse avoir reçû comptant en cette Ville de Paris des héritiers du feu Fauveau de Frenilly Receveur général des Domains des bois de Poitiers La Somme de Trois mille Six cent Cinquante Neuf Livres dix Sept Sols Sept deniers’. The ‘Quittance’ is signed ‘Lavalete’. On the reverse the document is ‘Enregistrée du Controlle Général des Finances’ by ‘De Calonne’ dated from Paris 20 June 1784.
