Two volumes uniformly bound in three-quarter brown morocco & cloth titled in gilt with raised bands on the spines. The edges are marbled. The front cover and spine of the second volume are detached from the text block though the covers are intact. The covers are rubbed and scuffed. 280 pages of text illustrated with 150 bold engravings on 146 sheets as published. The plates include 2 frontispieces and 2 pictorial title pages. The plates numbered 137 and 139 are engraved on one sheet the plates numbered 140-143 are engraved on two sheets and those numbered 147-148 are engraved on one sheet. The front endpaper of the first volume is detached but present. An early owner's inscription "Shipley Jones from Richard M. Pell" is penned on the front blank of each volume. Despite the covers the contents are unusually bright clean and unfoxed. <p>This internally beautiful set was published circa 1850's. A prospectus for this work as issued in parts was published in 1852. The publisher John Tallis 1817-1876 was active under the name "John Tallis & Company" from 1851 through 1854. The issues are as follows; Vol. 1 No. 4 November 1978; 71 pp.; Vol. 2 No 2 October 1979; 138 pp.; Vol. 2 No. 3 December 1979; 117 pp.; Vol. III No. I 1980; 144 pp. & Vol. III No. II 1980; 88 pp. All in their original tinted wrappers and all in quite good condition.The book The Book of the Future was written by the editor-in-chief of Ahron Fr. Edward D. Sullivan of Mount Vernon WA. It is an octavo in size and has 64 pp. Publisher's wrappers with a Biblical scene in gilt on front. It is about the coming troubles and the changes they will bring. From the introduction: "The catastrophic plunge the world is about to take has been its destiny from the start. It is the divine growing to maturity. It is the drama of the Mystery Schools of yesteryear. It is the resurrection of the ancient gods and the glory of Christ on Easter Sunday"On the final leaf of Sullivan's book is a list of other books written by Fr. Sullivan The third book listed is From Nostradamus to the Apocalypse; "Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerick 1824 prophesied that toward the end several men would unlock the secrets of the Apocalypse. This book reveals Father Sullivan to be one of these men."The title of the journal is the Hebrew word for "Ark." This was the organ of the Holy Order of the Rose and Cross HORC "an esoteric religious order of Catholics." They claim a direct relationship with the Liberal Catholic Church. On the inner front cover of the last three issues of The Ahron we find first a description of the Liberal Catholic Church itself in actuality an offshoot of theosophy: "It traces its episcopal succession to the Old Catholic Church of Holland and came into existence as the result of a complete reorganization in 1915-16 of the Old Catholic movement in Great Britain." This is the organization founded by Theosophy kingpins C. W. Leadbeater and J. I. Wedgewood. Underneath that description is a separate description of the Holy Order of the Rose and Cross. The journal carried articles on Jacob Boehme; the symbolism and meaning of the liturgy; kabbalah; Aleister Crowley and the "Thelemite Church" and their lack of genuine Apostolic Succession; the quest for a world religion as envisioned by Bishop C.W. Leadbeater; Pico della Mirandola; women in the episcopate; "The Unified Theory of Chiropractic"; etc. and "News in the Church" on the activities of various associated ecclesiastics and churches. These acts passed that years were seen by the author as being the most pertinent and so included in this work the rest of the acts of Parliament were to be released shortly thereafter in a second part.<br /> <br /> The acts abstracted were the 1 Tea and Window repealing the several Duties and for granting other duties in lieu and duties on coffee and cocoa nuts Act 2 The Game Act hunting license 3 The Horse Act granting duties on riding and carriage horses 4 The Postage Act increasing postage rates 5 The Pawn Broker's Act trying to reduce the handling of stolen goods 6 The Soap and Starch Act requiring the licensing of makers of starch and instilling new laws on soapmakers 7 The Cotton and Linen Act placing duties 8 The Hatter's Act requiring licenses laying additional duties on imported hats 9 The Excise Goods Act laying duties upon licences to be taken out by the makers and delers in exciseable commodities 10 The Candle Act cancelling the duty on wax candles made in Britain 11 The Distillery Act trying to discourage home distillation by discontinuing the duties uon low wines and spirits for home consumption. 12 The Hackney Coach Act increasing the charge for Hackey license 13 The Smuggling Act trying to prevent 14 Brick and Tile Act placing duties on brick and tile made in Great Britain and additional duties on those imported 15 Wax Candle Act placing additional duties on all candles except wax and spermaceti candles. Prince Philip The Duke of Edinburgh following the death of his mother Princess Alice of Battenberg 1885-1969 to The Honourable Gerald Lascelles Queen Elizabeth II's First Cousin. Personal correspondence between senior members of the British Royal Family are exceptionally rare to encounter in commerce.</p><p>ALS. 1pp. on 1 folded sheet of Windsor Castle black edged mourning notepaper dated 11 December 1969 near fine.</p><p>The letter reads as follows:</p><p><em>"Dear Gerald</em></p><p><em>Thanks so much for your letter.</em></p><p><em>Considering everything that has happened in the world and to my mother it's an extraordinary circumstance that she should be born and buried here at Windsor.</em></p><p><em>Please thank Angela for her kind thoughts.</em></p><p><em>Yours ever</em></p><p><em><u>Philip"</u></em></p><p>Provenance: The letter was acquired from Angela Lascelles' estate by George Hancock Rare Books.</p><p>Gerald Lascelles 1924-1998 was a first cousin of Queen Elizabeth II and titled The Honourable Gerald Lascelles. Angela Lascelles née Dowding; 1919-2007 was a British actress who married The Honourable Gerald Lascelles in July 1952 at St Margarets's Church Westminster.</p><p>Prince Philip wrote this letter to The Honourable Gerald Lascelles just six days after the death of his mother at Buckingham Palace on 5 December 1969.</p><p>Princess Alice of Battenberg was born in Windsor Castle on 25 February 1885 as Princess Victoria Alice Elizabeth Julia Marie to Prince Louis of Battenberg and Princess Victoria of Hesse granddaughter of Queen Victoria. Her great-grandmother and godmother Queen Victoria was present at her birth. "Princess Alice grew up mostly at her parents' residences in Germany but visited Windsor Castle regularly and Queen Victoria's Journals have several references to her being taken out for drives with the queen." Royal Collection Trust.</p><p>"Not long before her death Princess Alice expressed the wish to be buried in Jerusalem next to her aunt Grand Duchess Elizabeth Fyodorovna who like Princess Alice had become a nun and had founded a convent. The Grand Duchess Fyodorovna was killed during the Russian revolution and her remains were buried in the Church of Maria Magdalene in the Garden of Gethsemane in Jerusalem. In 1988 nineteen years after her death Princess Alice's coffin was transferred to the crypt in Gethsemane on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem.</p><p>In 1993 Yad Vashem bestowed the title of Righteous Among the Nations on Princess Alice. A year later her children Prince Philip – the Duke of Edinburgh – and Princess George of Hanover traveled to Yad Vashem and planted the tree in her honor." Harrison postmarked 1844 tipped in at front. â—†A few very faint scratches on back cover the printed portion with faint overall browning because of paper stock used otherwise A SUPERB COPY the attractive binding quite lustrous and virtually unworn and the illuminated portion with its brilliant colors and gold entirely intact.<br/> <br/> This is an exceedingly rare and beautifully executed item that combines a printed list with a group of full-page paintings and the hand-painted arms many of them minutely figured of those personages who from its founding by Edward III in 1348 through 1844 had been elevated to membership in the Order of the Garter. Inclusion in this order of chivalry is the highest of the honors bestowed by the British sovereign and is restricted at any given time to just 24 persons. Members include those chosen for their distinctive services to the crown as well as supernumerary members encompassing the British royal family and foreign monarchs. There are 719 members listed in the register here and an additional seven knights and their shields are added on the final illustrated page of the register. In 2008 Prince William became the 1000th Knight of the Garter. The name of the order according to tradition is taken from an incident at the court of Edward III in which the Countess of Salisbury lost one of the garters holding her hose to the amusement of onlookers. The king gallantly retrieved it and tied it to his own leg chiding the courtiers "Honi soit qui mal y pense" "Shame upon him who thinks evil upon it" which became the motto of the order. Our volume in addition to depicting the coats of arms of all recipients of the order through 1844 contains full-page illustrations of the insignia of the order a blue garter with the motto emblazoned in gold encircling the arms of England and surmounted by a coronet of St. George patron saint of the Order and of England slaying the dragon the badge and collar worn by Knights of the Garter on formal occasions a portrait of Edward III after that in St. George's Chapel and a knight of the order in full regalia including the garter worn below the left knee. This appears to be a most unusual item: we could find no copies listed in OCLC or ABPC and only one in COPAC the UK's National Academic & Specialist Library Catalogue. A later version was issued by publisher J.C. Hotten in 1872 but even that is located by OCLC in only six libraries. Our copy comes from the collection of and may have been specially prepared for Henry Drummond English banker politician and writer whose related work "Histories of the Noble British Families with Biographical Notices of the Most Distinguished Individuals in Each" was published by Pickering in 1842-46 in two giant folio volumes. Single column 18 lines in an attractive calligraphic hand. <br/> VERY PRETTY VIOLET CRUSHED MOROCCO GILT AND INLAID for The Renaissance Society stamp-signed in gilt on front doublure smooth spine with gilt titling FULL MOROCCO DOUBLURES consisting of a green morocco panel framed by purple morocco with gilt dots and scrolling floral motifs at each corner each with an inlaid white morocco flower cream-colored watered silk endleaves. In a lavender buckram chemise and matching purple morocco-backed slipcase with raised bands and gilt lettering. With many one-line initials in pink each leaf with a different two- to four-line initial in a different style with both painted and gilt elements and exuberantly decorated most leaves with a panel or "L"-shaped border ranging from simple lines to elaborate decorative bars a few borders with small landscapes and a total of FOUR FIGURAL SCENES decorative title page with colorful initials lettering and decorative flourishes text beginning with A HALF-PAGE MINIATURE OF ST. JEROME AT HIS DESK surrounded by A FULL BORDER of flowers gilt detailing and stylized heads of putti. Front free endpaper with bookplate of Phoebe Boyle. â—†Leather with a slight chalky appearance silk endleaves starting to fray at fore edge a few leaves with a hint of waviness but THE MANUSCRIPT IN BEAUTIFUL CONDITION the vellum entirely clean and the paint especially bright and fresh.<br/> <br/> Exuberantly decorated by a mysterious artist this manuscript was commissioned and bound for The Renaissance Society of Chicago before making its way into the superb collection of American bibliophile Phoebe Boyle. The text here comes from a poem by "Atlantic Monthly" writer and editor Thomas Bailey Aldrich 1836-1907 imagining the agony and the ecstasy of St. Jerome as he sat down to write his translation of the Bible. The illumination though certainly inspired by the decorative programs of Medieval manuscripts is decidedly modern in appearance drawing on the Art Nouveau movement and utilizing bold color combinations and whimsical design motifs. Although we were unable to find any information about its scribe and illuminator Siuol Na-Huab the artist must have been highly regarded in contemporary circles. The colophon states that the manuscript was written and illuminated for The Renaissance Society--an artistic group associated with the University of Chicago whose mission was to cultivate and promote modern art--and it was given an appropriately luxurious binding by the same organization. The manuscript was obviously valued highly enough to join the collection of Phoebe A. D. Boyle a client George Sutcliffe described as "rivalling the Medici in her patronage of the production of beautiful books." Shepherd "The Cinderella of the Arts" p. 63 Stephen Ratcliffe describes the Boyle collection as "unrivalled" for its jewelled bindings and modern illuminated manuscripts and any book from the Boyle collection which was put together with the greatest taste and discrimination is recognized as desirable beyond its intrinsic literary merit. With expert restorations to corners. WITH 16 ENGRAVED PLATES ALL FINELY COLORED BY A CONTEMPORANEOUS HAND and with the original tissue guards. Three-line ink call number on blank flyleaf at front. For the binder: Fléty "Dictionnaire des Relieurs Français" p. 33. ◆Morocco with many faint little spots conceivably in the original hide trivial scuffing and dings but the original unrestored and finely made binding pleasing in every way. Tissue guards lightly foxed isolated negligible spots to a couple plates but remarkably bright and fresh internally with THE ENGRAVINGS IN ESPECIALLY FINE CONDITION.<br/> <br/> In a lovely binding by the successor to Derome le jeune this is a rare devotional work with engravings depicting the Stations of the Cross also known as the Way of the Cross or the Via Crucis heightened with exquisite hand coloring. Through a series of 14 images we follow Christ's journey from the moment he is condemned to death to his Crucifixion and Entombment. Two additional related engravings--bringing our total to 16--mark the beginning and end of this traditional cycle of 14 images. As he suffers under the weight of the cross and bears the abuses of his persecutors Christ shares poignant moments with his mother Simon of Cyrene the women of Jerusalem and St. Veronica before finally arriving at the place of execution. Known for his religious scenes our engraver Jean Antoine Pierron 1780-1812 depicts each Station of the Cross with great sensitivity focusing on the emotional experience of the figures and capturing the drama of the moment. Each oval-shaped engraving measuring 100 mm. tall leaves an oversized impression on the viewer thanks to the powerful compositions and exquisite hand coloring. The attractive binding here is by Alexis-Pierre Bradel often called Bradel l'aîné the nephew and successor of Derome le jeune and binder to the Bibliothèque Nationale at the end of the 18th century. The restrained design flawless workmanship and premium materials make it a fitting binding for the contents. This work appears to be quite rare: RBH finds just one copy sold in 1919 and OCLC locates only three copies in institutions--two in France Lyon and the Bibliothèque Nationale and one in the U.S. Bridwell Library.
