‎CLERY M.‎

‎A Journal of Occurrences at the Temple during the Confinement of Louis XVI, King of France. By M. Clery, the King's Valet-de-Chambre. Translated from the original Manuscript by R.C. Dallas. ['The Journal of the Terror']. ATTRACTIVE COPY‎

‎8vo., First English Edition, with an engraved plate (moderately spotted), 2 engraved plans on one plate, and two engraved facsimiles on one plate, rear free endpaper and one rear blank preliminary lightly spotted; attractively bound in nineteenth century half calf, marbled boards, back gilt extra with five raised bands, second compartment with red leather label lettered in gilt, all other compartments ruled and elaborately tooled in gilt to a floral design, all edges marbled, marbled endpapers, corners lightly bruised else a remarkably bright, crisp, clean copy in elegant binding. With the 16pp list of subscribers, which includes virtually every member of the Royal family extended to Prince William of Gloucester. This is the early issue with 'Bookselllers' in the publisher's imprint (see ESTCT110766). The plates depict the Temple tower, plans of the second and third floors and two facsimiles of Marie Antoinette's handwriting. Clery's family had been in the service of the French Royal Family since the time of Louis XIV. Together with his brother, he began his career with the Princesse de Guenenee, governess to the royal children, and became valet-de-chambre to the Duke of Normandy (later the Dauphin) in 1785. From 1789, he acted as valet to King Louis XVI and was permitted by Petion to continue to wait on the Royal Family during their imprisonment in the Temple. After the King's execution, Clery accompanied the Madame Royale (Marie-Therese de Bourbon) on her exile to Vienna where he continued to serve until his death. LOVELY COPY OF A KEY DOCUMENTARY RECORD IN THE HISTORY OF FRANCE, THE REVOLUTION AND THE TERROR, AND THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT CONTEMPORARY ACCOUNT OF THE IMPRISONMENT OF LOUIS XVI.‎

‎Cleveland Grover 1837 1908; 22nd and 24th President of the United States 1885 1889 and 1893 1897‎

‎Our Ex-Presidents" a ten-page typescript and working copy of this essay written by the former President for "Youth's Companion" magazine and published there in its January 2 1908 issue under the title "Our People and Their Ex-Presidents."‎

‎Princeton NJ 1907. 4to 28 cm. 10 pages typed rectos only approximately 2850 words each leaf mounted along the left edge to a larger heavier sheet each page double-spaced with 29 separate ink corrections deletions and additions by Cleveland in his characteristic hand 44 words added 19 deleted 20 typos of poor strikes corrected; in addition there are numerous editorial marking on each page "by Grover Cleveland" is written in pencil in another hand underneath the title on the first page and "corrected by Cleveland" is written in pencil in yet another hand at the upper corner of the first page. The longest correction or addition occurs in the final paragraph where Cleveland strikes through four words replacing them with twelve. Following publication the "Youth's Companion" the essay appeared in newspapers e.g. "The Daily Republican" Monongahela Pennsylvania 25 February 1908 under the title "Our People and Our Ex-Presidents." We found one other unsigned essay by Cleveland at auction also a 10-page typescript with holograph corrections "Woman's Mission and Woman's Clubs" sold at Christie's in 2002 $8000. Very good condition throughout. 9870. An essay on the relationship between the American people and their ex-presidents by the only man who was ex-president twice. It addresses the expectations and demands the people place on their former presidents the personal financial effects these may have and the failure of the country to provide any support for them. Noting thankfully his own personally secure estate he based this one and cites specific examples of financial distress among earlier presidents. That combined with his own observations gave him concern for future ex-presidents. "If in concluding this discussion a personal word is necessary or permissible in view of the fact that I am the only man now living who could at this time profit by the ideas I have advocated I hope my sincerity will not be questioned when I say that I have dealt with the subject without the least thought of personal interest or desire for personal advantage. I am not in need of aid from the public treasury. I hope and believe that I have provided for myself and those dependent upon me a comfortable maintenance within the limits of accustomed prudence and economy and that those to whom I owe the highest earthly duty will not want when I am gone." <br/><br/> unknown books‎

‎Apologizing to a young lady for his shabby behavior in an autograph letter signed 10 July 1876 to "My Dear Miss Fuller."‎

‎8vo. Four pages approximately 500 words. In part: "You must think I am a very shabby fellow & to tell you the truth I think I am too . I want to hear from you just how the thing looks and what next I can do for you. I find I rather look for your letters and I know you'll pity a poor old bachelor when it is so little trouble and let me hear again soon." Cleveland had apparently not kept a promise to help with a benefit to raise funds for the enlargement of a Buffalo cemetery and was attempting to make amends here. ‎Cleveland, Grover (Former President of the United States, 1885-1889 and 1893-1897)‎

‎Autograph Letter Signed ALS from Grover Cleveland to Former U.S. Treasury Assistant Secretary Charles S. Hamlin Regarding a Meeting with Hamlin and Former U.S. Treasury Secretary Carlisle - Tamworth New Hampshire Aug 16 1905‎

‎1905. Book. Very Good. Soft cover. Written at Tamworth New Hampshire where Cleveland had a summer home. Previously in the R.O. McNiel collection. Fine condition except for fold marks and penciling on the blank side. Single sheet 6.5 by 10.5 inches folded once to create four pages of which only the first two comprise Grover Cleveland's letter. The letter is folded two more times to fit in an accompanying envelope with written notation: "Letter to C.S.H. from Mr. Cleveland" and "1905 Aug 16" on one side and a note of provenance on the reverse side acquired from Mrs. Hamlin by R.O. McNiel. Both the letter and envelope are presented in a customized printed folder with tissue guard and an image of Cleveland pasted inside the front cover along with a Cinderella stamp depicting Cleveland American Historical Stamps Presidents of the U.S. Hamlin is Charles Sumner Hamlin Assistant Secretary of the Treasury in Cleveland's second term from 1893 to 1897 and again from 1913 to 1914 Woodrow Wilson administration as well as the first Chairman of the Federal Reserve 1914-1916. John G. Carlisle was the Secretary of the Treasury during Hamlin's first Assistant Secretary appointment. Likely he is the same Carlisle referred to in the letter as Hamlin's guest with whom Cleveland is unable to meet. Cleveland also refers to an article about "Hat Trimming Refunds" and alludes to a Hamlin administration. Hat-Trimming Refunds refers to legal cases brought against the government by American importers of hat-making materials including trimmings in response to tariff reforms in Cleveland's second term that did not favor the silk importers in the United States. The "Hamlin administration" Cleveland refers to is likely one of Hamlin's unsuccessful bids for Governor of Massachusetts. A transcript of Grover Cleveland's letter to Charles S. Hamlin follows: "My dear Mr. Hamlin I have received your invitation to visit you at your summer house at the time you hope to have the Carlisles with you. I hope I need not assure you that it would give me great pleasure to avail myself of this opportunity to meet both you and your guest; but plans I have already made implicating expected guests will prevent my leaving here at the time indicated. I am very glad you did not forget to send me the article on the Hat Training Refunds. To a man of old fashioned ideas of official honesty and prosperity it is hard to see how the things you expose can occur in a Hamlin administration. With affectionate regards from Mrs. Cleveland and myself to both you and Mrs. Hamlin I am yours faithfully Grover Cleveland." Written underneath is Hon. Chas. S. Hamlin Boston Mass. Paperback‎

From the library of Columbus. J. Ryland 1892–1980 a prolific California architect whose career spanned over six decades specializing in Spanish Colonial Revival Streamline Moderne and Monterey Colonial styles with a profound impact on public buildings residences and educational facilities in the Central Valley and Monterey Bay region—making him a pivotal figure in preserving the area's architectural heritage during the early-to-mid-20th century. Tan and yellow cloth with black lettering in publisher's dustjacket. Spine ends lightly bumped else a fine copy in very good dustjacket wear and chips to extremities; large chip at spine head. One of the earlier references for modern house design in the United States and the first totally devoted to the Western ranch house style popularized by Cliff May in the pages of Sunset Magazine. It is a fascinating study of the roots of the ranch style and it is also a compendium of ideas for today's home builders. The ranch house’s successful design for living — a rambling one-story floor plan oriented to an extensive garden and one or more patios that functioned as “outdoor roomsâ€. Never trained or licensed as an architect Cliff May was an artist: a saxophone player turned furniture designer who expanded his scope first into staging mission style houses then designing ranch houses and ending by inspiring a whole housing movement. ‎Clifford Bax [Clifford Lea Bax] (1886-1962), English playwright, poet, journalist and writer, brother of the composer Arnold Bax‎

‎Clifford Bax playwright and author. Autograph Letter Signed to Clifford Musgrave ‘Mr Muspratt’ regarding a lecture he gives in Brighton accompanied by the actress and model Meum Stewart.‎

‎14 and 24 February 1945. The first on letterhead of D2 Albany London W1; the second from the same Piccadilly address. See his entry and that of his brother in the Oxford DNB. The recipient Clifford Musgrave d.1993 Borough Librarian was instrumental in the saving and renovation of the Brighton Pavilion. Both items in good condition lightly aged. Both written in an elegant close calligraphic hand. The first is misaddressed to ‘Mr Muspratt’ and the second to ‘Mr. Musgrave’. Both signed ‘Clifford Bax’. ONE 14 February 1945: 2pp 16mo. Nineteen lines. Regarding the arrangements for a lecture he is going to give he has been asked by ‘Eric’ to communicate with him about his ‘Brighton visit’. As the letter of ‘Eric’ was ‘hurried and ambiguous’ he asks whether he has arranged for the actress and model ‘Miss Meum Steuart sic’ to stay at the ‘Old Ship’ or at ‘the Albion if it has been reopened’. He understands that ‘Eric’ will be joining them at their ‘little supper-party at the Ship after the lecture’. There is a possibility that ‘Mr. Leon M. Lion whom you probably know through Eric’ will be joining them. He thinks he has addressed him by his ‘true name it is quite familiar to me’ although he is in his address book as Clifford Musgrave. TWO 24 February 1945: 1p 12mo. Seventeen lines. Begins: ‘Dear Mr. Musgrave / I did enjoy my brief visit to Brighton . . . . that place of such happy memories for me. In 1935 I all-but took a flat no the sea-front: and as very small children we spent several holidays at a boarding-house in the Old Steyne. What is more I have always enjoyed the Pavilion because it speaks of a determination to make life gay.’ In addition Musgrave himself ‘came up to expectation. Indeed Miss Stewart and I when we were in the train lamented our poor chance of cultivating sombody so much to our liking’. Furthermore Bax ‘met’ Musgrave ‘this morning in the correspondence columns of the Lit: Supp: - a charming surprise’. In a postscript he expresses relief that the gout with which he is at present inflicted ‘postponed its visit till after my talk at Brighton!’ 14 and 24 February 1945. The first on letterhead of D2 Albany, London W1; the second from the same Piccadilly address. unknown‎

‎Clifford Sharp, (1883-1935), editor of the New Statesman:‎

‎Clifford Sharp editor of the New Statesman Five Letters most signed "C.S." Clifford Sharp editor New Statesman to Robert Lynd essayist.‎

‎1923-1933. 3 ALsS ANS and TNS three on New Statesman letterheads one on letterhead of 127 Willifield Way Golders Green; 27 July 1923 19 June 1924 and 5 January and 23 March 1933 8pp. 8vo and 12mo.An undated note on New Statesman letterhead reads 'These fruits of abstinence are not for me. If you got in that bottle of whiskey you spoke of for God's sake drink it.' MG notes that this was written 'evidently on one of his cures for alcoholism'. The first dated item again on New Statesman letterhead encloses the 'postscript' to 'Green's letter' which Sharp 'left out on account of its length' concerning gambling and prostitution. On 19 June 1924 Sharp writes: 'We never meet nowadays. Mightn't you make a habit - an always breakable habit - of looking in here on Tuesday evenings between 5.30 & 7 Such a habit would have a major & a minor advantage. The major one is that it would enable us to have a drink - a small whiskey - together - the minor one is that we might sometimes talk about your article. I don't mean that I am ever in the slightest degree dissatisfied with Y.Y. - very much the contrary his price by the way has this month risen from 5 to 6 guineas as a very inadequate but well-meant recognition of his value but there is something to be said for occasional preliminary discussion with a devil's advocate - at least I think that is what I should want if I were Y.Y. Besides there would be the drink.' The letter of 5 January 1933 refers to a New Year's pact between RL and Sharp to abstain from alcohol: 'I owe Sylvia 1/-. This the first day upon which it has been possible for me to get on entirely without a drink. As a matter of fact when we met on New Year's Eve I knew perfectly well that I could not possibly keep the pact for as much as 24 hours as it was only because I knew your sentimental attachment to particular dates that I did not insist on a few day's postponement. On New Year's Day when the maid had left at 10.30. a.m. I was completely alone in the house for the rest of the day & was quite incapable of getting myself even so much as a cup of tea. My hands wouldn't hold anything. At 7 p.m. greatly daring I managed with only one rather nasty fall on the way to get down to the pub. I couldn't have a drink there because I couldn't have lifted the glass but I have managed to get home safely with two ¼ bottles. One of these enabled to get myself some supper. The other I kept for Monday's emergencies which in some ways owing to the return of my sister for a couple of hours in a more or less hysterical state over my father's apparently dying condition were even more serious than Sunday's.' The letter of 23 March 1933 continues the description of Sharp's struggles with drink. 1923-1933. unknown‎

‎CLINTON George First Governor of New York State 1777 1795 1801 1804; also 4th Vice President of the United States 1805 1812‎

‎“Kingston laid in ashes by the Enemy†.‎

‎<p>CLINTON George First Governor of New York State 1777-1795 1801-1804; also 4th Vice-President of the United States 1805-1812 under Thomas Jefferson and James Madison.<br /></p><p>"Kingston laid in ashes by the Enemy" . <br /></p><p>8vo 7-3/4 x 6-1/2 inches 1-1/2 pages on laid paper with integral address leaf remnants of wax seal some fading to text and signature scattered minor<br /></p><p>It should be noted that Clinton was sworn in as New York's first governor on 9th July 1777 shortly after Kingston was established as its first capitol 20th April 1777. Thus the burning of Kingston and change of capitol to eventually Albany was a consequence of the War for Independence. <br /></p><p>Remarkable handwritten manuscript explaining that the British troops arrived at Kingston before his own re-enforcements whereupon 1000 men burned the town and immediately returned to their ships warning that a similar fate awaits the settlements along the shore and that forage and property should be moved from the path of the enemy reminding him to take the sleigh from the barn as it is all the personal property that remains to him after the destruction in Kingston noting that the enemy is advancing up the river to Saugerties with Tryon commanding on the east side and Vaughn on the west.<br /></p><p>Transcript</p><p><i>Head Quarters Hurley 17th October 1777</i></p><p><i>Dear Brother</i></p><p><i>"Before this can reach you you will receive the – disagreeable account of Kingston being laid in ashes by the Enemy. They landed before my troops arrived after a little opposition by the few militia Cols Pawling & Snyder could collect and marched about 1000 Men immediately up to Town - where they were told by some Tories who continued in it that my People were advancing on the Hurley Road & they immediately set it in Flames and extracted precipitately on Board their Vessels tho their Orders were to proceed to Hurley & the adjacent Neighborhoods to give them the same Fate so that tho I was not able to get my Troops Time enough to save Kingston they saved this and the other Parts of the Country near it. This will show you the Fate New Windsor & the other settlements along shore are to partake on the Enemy's Return down. Therefore the Necessity of removing the Forage &c from the Banks of the River among which remember my Slay in the Barn as it is now the only moveable Property I have left the Best being removed to Kingston shared its Fate tho indeed a great share of Property has been saved out of Town. The enemy sailed up the River this Morning as high as Saghertyes burning along Shore as they go. When they go a little higher I will follow them. They have Parties on both Sides of the River. Tryon commands those on the East & Vaughan on the West Side of the River.</i></p><p><i>Yours Sincerely</i></p><p><i>Geo Clinton</i></p><p>On Friday evening 16 October 1777 a British fleet commandeered by James Wallace and John Vaughn the latter on board the 'Friendship' which had anchored near Easopus Island the day before came into the mouth of Rondout Creek and engaged the gallery "Lady Washington". Shortly after noon the British landed on Rondout Creek and the Cove above Columbus Point. Vaughn personally led the march capturing and forcing a negro to lead them into town without meeting resistance. The troops went through the streets in parties led by Tories setting the whole place on fire in response to the occasional resistance lodged by residents from within their houses. There was looting and vandalism. Meanwhile part of the fleet went a bit up the River and creek to destroy landings and sloops. By the time George Clinton arrived into Kingston the whole town was ablaze and the British party had set out to return to their ships.</p><p>In a letter on 18 October penned at Little Britain NY in response to this letter his brother B. Genl. James Clinton writes:</p><p><i>D'r Brother</i></p><p><i>Yours of yesterday's Date I have just received. I am sorry for the Loss of Kingston &c. </i><i>Five of the Enemy's Shipping Returned Down the River last night without Doing any Damage Except fireing Some Cannon and small arms at our men and wounding one of ours on Board of a Ferry Boat…"</i></p><p>The war became personal for the governor specially after what had happened to Kingston. In a letter to William Smith @ 31 October 1777 his sentiments and commitment are laid bare:</p><p><i>"The Cruelties as well Cowardice with which this Warr has been conducted ag't us must I think be sufficient at this late Hour to convince every Man that all connection with Great Britain is at an End…"</i></p><p>Reference: <b><i>Public Paper of George Clinton</i></b> First Governor of New York War of the Revolution Series. New York: Wynkoop Hallenbeck Crawford Co. 1900. Volume II pp. 457-459. Our letter of 17 October 1777 appears to be unknown to the editors of the Clinton papers although they do list and transcribe the 18th October response by his brother James. Consequently our letter appears to be the only firsthand account by the governor of New York on the actual burning of Kingston an event historically reenacted locally each year within Ulster County.</p> Autograph Letter Signed, “Geo Clintonâ€, written to his brother Gen.
