‎(LEAF BOOK - BOOK COLLECTING, THE KORAN). BARLOW JR., WILLIAM P.‎

‎THE FELICITIES OF BOOK COLLECTING‎

‎Piedmont California: The Nova Press 1958. 260 x 170 mm. 10 1/4 x 6 3/4". 17 1 pp. 1 leaf.
Publisher's sage green paper boards cover with title printed in black. WITH A LEAF FROM THE 1865 BIELEFELD "DER KORAN." In fine condition.

This charming and attractively printed leaf book served as the ultimate bibliophile's Christmas card. William P. Barlow Jr. 1934-2021 was a dedicated Bay Area book collector who for many years served as president of the Roxburghe Club of San Francisco. Along with collecting Barlow printed under the Nova Press imprint putting out a smattering of pamphlets and "cards" such as the present volume. This tongue-in-cheek production gently pokes fun at the norms of the bibliophilic world even as it celebrates them as evident in the limitation statement: "A moderate number of copies printed and distributed by the Nova Press Piedmont and its proprietor Wm. P. Barlow Jr. as a form of Season's Greetings to members of the Roxburghe Club of San Francisco and other friends. To the latter I apologize for a rather parochial parody and a somewhat un-Christmassy Christmas card; to the former I need apologize only for the way in which it has been done as they are used to getting all sorts of strange things at Christmas." The leaf included in this book is from the 1856 Bielefeld edition of Ludwig Ullmann's influential German translation of the Qur'an which was first published in 1840. The print run of this work must have been a good deal less than "moderate" as copies seem not to be readily available. The Nova Press unknown‎

‎(LONG ISLAND IN THE GILDED AGE)‎

‎Photo Scrapbook Shows Life And Leisure During The Gilded Age On Long Island‎

‎LONG ISLAND. This scrapbook displays photographs taken between 1887-1889 that capture a wealthy familys life on Long Island during the Gilded Age. The term The Gilded Age created by Mark Twain refers to the period of the late nineteenth century typically the 1870s through the turn of the 20th century during which rapid economic growth rapid industrialization and widespread European immigration primarily unskilled labor transformed the economies of the Northern and Western United States. According to the United States Census the era saw a real wage growth of 40% from 1860 to 1890 with the average annual wage per industrial worker including men women and children rising from $380 in 1880 $11523 in 2022 dollars to $584 in 1890 $18370 in 2022 dollars a gain of 59%. This rise in wealth resulted in the rise of a New Money elite those who made their money not through generational wealth and family connections but rather through oil the railroads and other rising industries. They are best exemplified by John D. Rockefeller Jay Gould Henry Clay Frick Andrew Mellon Andrew Carnegie Henry Flagler J. P. Morgan Leland Stanford and Cornelius Vanderbilt. New York was often at the center of the Gilded Age as the worlds dominant financial market and the nations leader in economic investment immigration political corruption and culture. This scrapbook contains 59 black-and-white photographs. They are affixed or mounted to 43 of 70 pages in the album. 29 of the photographs are 3.5 x 4.5 19 are 6.5 x 4.5 and 11 are 5.5 x 7.5. Two of these images are cyanotypes. Though the family is not named in the album and photographs with names underneath lead to nothing online there is a photograph in front of a house labeled Westbrook. The Westbrook estate on Long Island was designed in 1886 for William Bayard Cutting 18501912 by the architect Charles C. Haight in the Tudor Revival style. It contained the first private golf course in the United States and is now a part of a state park called the Bayard-Cutting Arboretum. Cutting started the sugar beet industry in the United States in 1888 was a builder of railroads operated the ferries of New York City his maternal grandfather was a partner of Robert Fulton and developed part of the south Brooklyn waterfront Red Hook. Images include a large extended family repeatedly and leisurely photographed the Harvard-Yale sailing race in 1887 at New London young men likely Yale students yachting and relaxing on a boat named the Princess and beautiful images of the scenery and waters of Long Island. Overall the album is in good shape. One photograph is damaged and several others have minor tears or chips. The scrapbook is half-leather and half-cloth so the spine is worn and the corners are rubbed and bumped. Regardless the scrapbook is a prize for anyone interested in this fascinating and relevant era in American history. It provides fantastic insight into the life of a wealthy Long Island family including what they did what they wore and how they presented themselves to each other and their neighbors. hardcover‎

‎(LORY, Mathias Gabriel the younger (1784 -1846)):‎

‎Picturesque tour through the Oberland in the canton of Berne, in Switzerland. Illustrated by seventeen coloured engravings and a map showing the principal mountains and glaciers.‎

‎London, published at R. Ackermann's Repository of Arts, 101 Strand (printed by: William Clowes), 1823, in-4to, VIII + 120 p. + 17 plates with views all hand-coloured + 1 map, some stains on the free endpapers only, book contents and plates exceptionally clean, some dust stains mainly in the margins, handwritten on first flyleaf - E.W.P. Bonnet July 1854 - , orig. publisher’s illustrated red cloth. Spines a bit sunned, else a fine copy.‎

First English edition in a beautiful publisher’s binding. Seventeen hand-coloured aquatint views without signatures. The work is considered to be an English version of the work by Phil. Alb. Stapfer «Voyage pittoresque de l'Oberland ou Description ...» published in Paris, in- folio,1812, with 1 frontispice by Duncker and 14 coloured plates after G. Lory by S. Weibel which was also published in 1822 in Paris and Strasbourg. In this edition 11 views are by J.S. Weibel & 6 by F. Schmid, F. Schutz, M. Wocher & G. Lory. But ‘Some of the plates in Ackermann’s book, judging by the titles, do not correspond with any in the Voyage Pittoresque done in Paris. (Abbey Travel). These fine coloured views of Swiss lakes, mountains, glaciers & towns, all in typical warm, summerly English colours, are showing: 1 - ‘Bern’, 2 - ‘View near Thun’, 3 - ‘View of Thun’, 4 - ‘View of the Lake of Thun. From upper Island’, 5 - The environs of Thun’, 6 - ‘View of the Castle of Spiez’, 7 - ‘View of the Cavern of St. Beat, near the Lake of Thun’, 8 - ‘View of Unterseen’, 9 - ‘View of Interlaken’,10 - ‘Fall of the Staubbach’, 11 - ‘A View of the Jungfrau’, 12 - ‘View of the Glaciers of Grindelwald’, 13 - ‘View of the Glaciers of Roselouvi’, 14 - ‘Meyringen’, 15 - ‘The Fall of Olstenbach & the Bridge of Wyler, 16 - ‘View of the village of Brienz’, 17 - ‘View of the Castle of Rinkenberg’. The map of the ‘Glaciers of the canton of Berne’ is bound at the beginning as a frontispiece. Waber, BSL III/135, cf. III/133; Abbey, Travel 57; vgl. Mandach, Les Lory, p. 137; Perret 4534. (error of date 1923!); Tooley, English Books with coloured plates. Image disp.‎

‎ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH by ARTHUR C. MACAULAY of the Spanish Pianist AMPARO ITURBI accepting the applause of the audience at the American Theatre Wing War Service's "STAGE DOOR CANTEEN".‎

‎New York NY & Jersey City NJ circa 1942. 1942. Very good. - An 8 inch high by 10 inch wide softly hued black & white original photograph by Arthur C. Macaulay. The photograph portrays the Spanish pianist Amparo Iturbi standing on stage next to a grand piano accepting the applause of the servicemen looking back from their seats at a table. An array of flags serves as background to the stage and the pictorial banner above reads "American Theatre Wing War Service Inc. : Stage Door Canteen". The Jersey City N.J. photographer's credits are stamped on the verso and the photograph is additionally identified in pencil as "#758 Courtesy c-9-4 Amparo Iturbi" and "Amparo Iterbi / Jean Dalrymple" on the verso.
