22 · [The 'Sweet Satirist of Israel' Publishes His First Book of Epigrams] Rosenzweig, Gerson
SHIRIM MESHALIM U-MIKHTAMIM
New York: S. Levine 1893. 1st edition. Later Paper Wrappers 70 4 pages 18 x 12 cm Singerman 4588.
Gerson Rosenzweig 1861-1914 was born in Lithuania he taught Hebrew in Bialystok and in 1888 he emigrated to the United States. Rosenzweig edited several Hebrew periodicals - Ha-Ivri 1891-1902 Kadimah 1899-1902 Ha-Devorah 1911-12 - they were short-lived and earned him neither fame nor a livelihood. He also edited Hebrew columns in the Yiddish press.
Though he was a versifier rather than a poet he had a genuine flair for satire and he was known to his contemporaries as the "sweet satirist of Israel" and as a parodist he earned an honorable place in Hebrew literature. His Talmud Yanka'i "Yankee Talmud " 1907 1909 poured a stream of ill-humored sarcasm on the peddler the teacher the rabbi. The pages of that collection of satires resembled the pages of the Talmud: the text in large letters wreathed by commentary in Rashi script is divided into six tractates instead of the talmudic six orders.
Rosenzweig also denounced the vulgarisms of the country the worship of money the religion of success. Epigrammatic neatness was his forte. Example: "What is the difference between a convert and an anarchist A convert denies what he believes an anarchist believes what he denies. " Using a biblical phrase he quipped sardonically about his impending death by cancer of the tongue: "Life and death are at the mercy of the tongue" Prov. 18: 21.
He published two books of epigrams: Shirim Meshalim u-Mikhtamim 1893 and Hamishah ve-Elef Mikhtamim 1903; reprinted in Russia. WAS SAHEN 58 DEUTSCHE ARBEITER IN RUSSLAND BERICHT DER DEUTSCHEN ARBEITER-DELEGATION ÜBER IHREN AUFENTHALT IN RUSSLAND VOM 14. JULI BIS ZUM 28. AUGUST 1925
Berlin Neuer Deutscher Verlag 1925. 1st edition. Original 3-color printed wrappers 12mo 176 pages. Foreword by the Dutch trade union official Edo Fimmen 1882-1942.
Fimmen was committed to a workers’ united front and was chairman of the The International Federation of Trade Unions also known as the Amsterdam International from 1919 to 1923. He was also a member of International Workers' Aid and through his friendship with Willi Münzenberg an important supporter of the International Red Aid and the League against Imperialism and Colonial Oppression.
Widely-read among Anti-fascists in Germany in the years leading up to Hitler's win in the Reichstag this work includes numerous photo plates with travel impressions and a list of the delegation members.
In her recent history of East Germany “Beyond the Wall†historian Katia Hoyer discusses the importance of this book in building a positive image of the newly founded Soviet Union among German Communists including Jews who would soon begin to flee to the USSR in large numbers as the Nazi noose tightened.
She notes that “a 1925 brochure called ‘What Did 58 German Workers See in Russia’ became instrumental in creating a paradisiacal image of the Soviet Union. It was inspired by the communist Hermann Remmele who had led a group of his comrades on a grand tour of sorts through Russia.
The pamphlet was based on their reports and boasted of 'female workers who proudly talked of their equal treatment' and of wages that were '33 per cent higher' if one takes into account that workers lived rent-free and had excellent healthcare. All of this must have made the Soviet Union seem like the promised land to the unemployed and the destitute as well as to idealist intellectuals.
Having experienced the First World War and its appalling consequences older German communists wanted to believe there was a better alternative and saw the Soviet Union as a beacon of hope especially after the waves of arrests in Berlin in 1933. For most German political refugees who fled to the USSR after Hitler took power their time in Moscow began as a great adventure†page 15.
She notes that later however “Hermann Remmele the leader of the group that penned the propaganda brochure ‘What Did 58 German Workers See in Russia’ was to endure a fate that would stand in for many German communists. Once a darling of the Soviet political elite Grigory Zinoviev had called him 'the best and most precious asset of the German party. the gold of the proletariat' he was arrested in Russia in May 1937 on charges of spying and sabotage. Two years later he was sentenced to death and shot on the same day 7 March 1939.
His son Helmuth died on his way to a gulag in Siberia and his wife Anna would succumb to health problems caused by a horrific spell in Moscow's Butyrka prison†page 19.
SUBJECTS: Labor and laboring classes -- Soviet Union. 2600: The Hacker Quarterly
2600: The Hacker Quarterly" on Free Speech Code and the Surveillance Era Archive of 10 Issues 2000-2008
2000. 2600: The Hacker Quarterly which document the technical practice of hacking ranging from telephone and computer systems networks encryption consumer hardware to the legal and political questions it raised from the status of code as speech to state surveillance. Archive of 10 issues. This run of ten issues spanning Fall 2000 to Autumn 2008 documents the longest running hacker periodical through the years in which the Internet became ordinary infrastructure and the legal treatment of code privacy and intrusion moved from specialist concern to open public dispute. Its readers ranged from computer scientists and telecom hobbyists to college students and a broader audience drawn to underground technical culture. The run documents the legal and cultural contestation surrounding a pivotal phase of technological change as networked computing became ordinary infrastructure and the status of code privacy and security became matters of public dispute.

Eric Corley Emmanuel Goldstein ed. 2600: The Hacker Quarterly. Middle Island NY: 2000 to 2008. Archive of Ten issues: Vol. 17 No. 3 Fall 2000; Vol. 22 No. 2 Summer 2005; Vol. 22 No. 3 Autumn 2005; Vol. 22 No. 4 Winter 2005-2006; Vol. 24 No. 1 Spring 2007; Vol. 24 No. 2 Summer 2007; Vol. 24 No. 3 Autumn 2007; Vol. 25 No. 1 Spring 2008; Vol. 25 No. 2 Summer 2008; Vol. 25 No. 3 Autumn 2008. The articles' contents join technical method with legal and political pressure: man-in-the-middle attacks against online poker software Skype-based building access proxy circumvention RFID tracking botnet capture VoIP loopholes campus information flows through Wikipedia custom caller ID charge-number spoofing and European data-retention policy. Regular departments include "Politics" "Telecom Informer" "Hacker Perspective" "Marketplace" letters puzzles reader submissions calls for articles sent to the Middle Island editorial office and meeting lists tying the quarterly magazine to local hacker gatherings.

Founded in 1984 and named for the 2600 Hz signaling tone that phone phreaks had used to seize long-distance phone lines 2600 entered the new decade as a named defendant in one of the first major tests of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. In late 1999 the magazine posted the DVD-decryption program DeCSS along with links to other sites hosting it on 2600.com; eight motion picture studios sued and the resulting case Universal City Studios Inc. v. Corley named for publisher Eric Corley turned on the question at the center of the magazine's politics: whether computer code is speech protected by the First Amendment. The Southern District of New York rejected that defense and permanently enjoined 2600 from both posting DeCSS and knowingly linking to it. The litigation ran directly alongside this run's earliest issue and the later issues then register the widening stakes of security research amid the PATRIOT Act NSA warrantless wiretapping RFID adoption campus network controls and European data-retention rules with first-Friday meeting listings in each issue preserving the magazine's double identity as publication and organizing network. Wrappers with light rubbing handling wear; interiors generally clean complete and sound. Adhesive residue from price stickers remain on several covers. Overall in very good condition. This run preserves 2600 during the years when hacker periodical culture treated Internet filtering telecom systems surveillance law and practical security research as parts of the same public argument. unknown

1993. 2600: The Hacker Quarterly archive of issues documenting the technical practice of hacking ranging from phone phreaking telephone and network investigation encryption and consumer hardware to the legal and political questions it raised from the status of code as speech to state surveillance as the magazine moved from the analog telephone network into the public Internet era. Eric Corley publishing as Emmanuel Goldstein began 2600 in 1984 and the magazine built a forum written by its readers around telephone switching systems Internet protocols underground computing culture and disputes over civil liberties. This group preserves that transition through Autumn 1993 articles like "How to Hack Honesty" and a city by city "2600 Meetings" directory then through 2000 and 2002 issues centered on Freedom Downtime H2K H2K2 DeCSS URL filtering biometrics geospatial systems and communications politics after 9/11. The DeCSS issues place the magazine inside Universal City Studios Inc. v. Setauket and Middle Island NY: 2600 Enterprises 1993-2008. The Autumn 1993 issue lists Emmanuel Goldstein as editor-in-chief and reproduces a Secret Service statement quoted in response to a CPSR Freedom of Information Act request concerning the breakup of the November 1992 Washington DC 2600 meeting. Interior contents include "Hacking at the End of the Universe" "The Wheel Cipher" "Caller ID Technicalities" "How to Hack Honesty" and "The Last of the Acronym List" with the meeting page naming locations from Ann Arbor Cambridge Chicago Los Angeles New York City Philadelphia San Francisco Seattle and Washington DC to Granada and Munich. Its recurring payphone features gather subscriber-supplied images and captions from Russia Estonia Poland Switzerland Ukraine Brazil Cuba Thailand Japan China Taiwan Finland the Bahamas South Korea Turkey Malta the Netherlands Antilles and Australia turning telephone hardware into a geographic index of communications access and technological change. The HOPE material connects the periodical to the conference series 2600 has sponsored since 1994 a public gathering point for hackers journalists activists and technologists. 27 [A German-Jewish Refugee Addresses the Needs of the DPs] Grossmann, Kurt R Introduction by Abraham S Hyman
THE JEWISH DP PROBLEM: ITS ORIGIN SCOPE AND LIQUIDATION
New York: Institute of Jewish Affairs World Jewish Congress 1951. 1st edition. Original paper wrappers. 8vo 43 pages.
“No single phenomenon of the postwar period except the struggle for the Jewish Homeland and its miraculous survival in the face of Arab intransigence has proven at once so tragic and so inspiring as that of the more than two hundred thousand Jews from various countries who at one time or another sojourned in camps and towns in Germany Austria and Italy while waiting for new homes and a new life in freedom. For years the two letters ‘DP’ figured prominently on the pages of Jewish publications were a daily topic of conversation the concern of Jewish philanthropy and the preoccupation of all major Jewish organizations the world over. It is for these reasons that the Institute of Jewish Affairs decided to relate the story of the Jewish DPs in the present study….
The purpose of this brochure is to summarize the unique experience in Jewish history which the DPs represented and to give a brief account of what their problem was like and how and by what means it was solved. The full story of the Jewish DPs of course has yet to be written.†from foreword.
SUBJECTS: Jewish refugees. Jews -- Europe. World War 1939-1945.
OCLC: 21664940.
Very Good Condition. 3 HÜREL - FERIDUN HÜREL, (One of member and founders of Turkish Rock Band 3 Hürel), (1951-).
Original photographic advertisement of 'Üç Hürel' signed and inscribed 'Feridun'.
Very Good Turkish Original b/w advertisement of Turkish Rock Band Üç Hürel, signed and inscribed by Feridun Hürel as 'Atilla'ya sevgiler'. Oblong: 11x16,5 cm. In Turkish. Photograph on the advertisement shows three members and brothers of Üç Hürel. Üç Hürel was a Turkish rock band, formed in 1970 by brothers Onur, Haldun and Feridun Hürel. Considered as among Turkey's most popular Anatolian rock bands, the band performed folk-driven pop and rock music and occasionally also paraphrased classic folk songs with considerable ingenuity. Their lyrics generally featured themes such as peace and freedom. Hürel brothers were born in Trabzon and later moved to Istanbul due to family business. In 1966, the brothers formed their first band, Yankilar, which was later renamed to Istanbul Dörtlüsü. The band performed in small music halls and tried to synthesize Turkish music and traditional rock formats. After forming a number of other bands, including Trio Istanbul, Oguzlar, and Biraderler, Feridun became a member of the Selcuk Alagöz Orchestra. Haldun and Onur later joined him to gain experience and earn money for new equipment. In 1970, they left the orchestra to form 3 Hur-El. Following the release of their debut single in 1970, "Ve Ölum/Seytan Bunun Neresinde," the band released two LPs and more than ten singles in six years. In 1977, Haldun and Feridun left the band for mandatory military service. Coping with the loss of their mother to a traffic accident, the brothers quit music. Feridun moved to England but returned without any significant accomplishments, subsequently returning and specializing in advertising. Onur took a job as an instructor and Haldun started a ceramics and textiles business. 3 Hür-El reunited in 1996, releasing two records in 1996 and 1999, respectively. The band's 1970 song, "Ve Ölüm", was featured in the 2013 Serge Bozon film, Tip Top. (Source: Wikipedia).

THE ROAD TO LUBLIN: A SURVIVOR’S STORY
New York: American Jewish Committee 1940. 1st separate edition. Original paper wrappers. 8vo pages 119-133 14 pages total. “Reprinted from Contemporary Jewish Record March-April 1940.†Includes photo of “Armbands which Nazis are compelling the Jews to wear.†Moldawer’s story originally appeared in The Forward N.Y.C. Jan. 2-5 1940 in Yiddish.
Moldawer a Polish Jew who had resided in Germany had been caught by the outbreak of the war in Hamburg on his way to the United States. Together with other Jews holding U.S. visas and steamship tickets on the Hamburg-America Line-which had suspended operations-he was deported to Lublin via Prague. Moldawer used his U.S. visa and left Poland in December 1939 and was able to issue this report which became important at the time for understanding what was happening to the Jews in Poland and is often cited in later analysis.

“During the Holocaust 99% of the Jews from Lublin District in the General Governorate of German-occupied Poland were murdered along with thousands of Jews who had been deported to Lublin from elsewhere. There were three extermination camps in Lublin District Sobibor Belzec and Majdanek.
The ghettoization of the Jews for the purpose of persecution terror and exploitation in the Nazi German controlled towns began immediately after the invasion of Poland….The number of major urban ghettos established in the General-Government in 1939–40 including those of Kraków and Warsaw reached one hundred before the end of the year. In the Lublin area the situation initially differed. Instead of their urban concentration some 10000 Polish Jews had been expelled from Lublin in early March 1940 to the rural towns where ghettos were not set up based solely on Globocnik's opposition to the Jewish people living near his staff headquarters. The remaining 40000 Jews of Lublin were forced into the Lublin Ghetto in May 1940†Wikipedia.
SUBJECTS: Nazi concentration camps. World War 1939-1945 -- Jews. 31 [Russian Zionists Applaud the Unfolding 1917 Revolution--And Assess the Movement for a Jewish State] Tschlenow, E W [Yefim Vl
LA GUERRE LA RÉVOLUTION RUSSE ET LE SIONISME DISCOURS PRONONCÉE. À LA CONFÉRENCE DES SIONISTES RUSSES À PETROGRADE LE 24. MAI - 6. JUNI 1917
Copenhague Copenhagen Imp. Martius Truelsen 1917. 1st edition. Original printed paper wrappers 8vo 22 pages 23 cm. In French. Title translates as "The War The Russian Revolution and Zionism."
"publie´ par le Bureau d'organisation sioniste a` Copenhague 1917."

The Petrograd Conference was the "seventh national conference of the Russian Zionists and the first after the February 1917 Revolution. It opened on June 6 1917. Five hundred and fifty-two delegates representing 140000 shekel holders from 680 cities and towns took part in the conference.
In the new Russia the conference demonstrated the growing power of Zionism among Jewry and defined the Russian Zionists' attitude toward the problems of the World Zionist movement and the upbuilding of Erez Israel. It discussed the specific problems of the Russian Jews under the democratic regime with the hope of expanding the movement which up to that time had acted mainly illegally.
Jehiel Tschlenow E.W. Tschlenow this imprint's author and Menahem Ussishkin were elected as presidents of the conference.
In his programmatic address Tschlenow said that the main task of the conference was to lay the foundations for Jewish national autonomy in Russia as well as to emphasize the Jewish people's aspiration to return to Erez Israel. Ussishkin spoke of the need to immediately mobilize Jewish capital for settlement work especially for the purchase of land and to train pioneer workers.
This seven-day conference was the last free countrywide expression of the Russian Zionist movement before the October Revolution of the same year became the starting point of its persecution and liquidation" Arie Rafaeli-Zenziper in EJ.

Tschlenow opens his speech with great hope and excitement at the recent revolution welcoming the attendees "to this first meeting in free Russia you who come to publicly proclaim the hope of our people yearning for liberty and rebirth and who come to discuss our future work. Nowhere else it seems to me could we find at present such a resounding echo as in this city where barely three months ago the heavy links of the chain that had bound the life of the immense Empire were broken.
For about a century since the glorious advent of the Decembrists the invisible preliminary work had been underway. How much innocent blood was shed! In this blood we are proud to note-there is also some of our own Jewish blood. Well then in this solemn moment let us recall the memory of those who did not have the joy of greeting the present hour this hour that makes up for all sorrows.
Only three weeks have passed since Russia won its freedom and the Provisional Government in cooperation with the Soldiers' and Workers' Council washed away the stain that had defiled Russia for centuries. I am referring to the disgrace known as "the deprivation of the rights of the Jewish people." It seemed that this stain had become one with the very flesh of the Russian people and that only blood could remove it. Well no.
The great purifying torrent of the Revolution washed away the filth in a single stroke irrevocably and without suffering. The sorrowful history of our people knows no other example of the destruction of such a vast ghetto nor of a liberation established with such simplicity on the one hand and accepted with such dignity on the other. We enthusiastically salute the Provisional Government and beg it to believe in our support and devotion to the heroic work of freedom and greatness for Russia that it has undertaken.
On March 21st the weight of a burden under which Russian Judaism had been collapsing was lifted. Our hands so long chained were freed. The immensity of space unfolded before our minds before our eyes still unaccustomed to such splendor. It is precisely at this moment that we the Russian branch of the Jewish people will be able thanks to our accumulated strength and energy to tackle the national edifice the work of addressing the great national problems."

He concludes:

".here are the walls of the immense ghetto that have just crumbled. And soon the other ghettos will follow too. Principles of a new life springing from the global struggle carry within them the realization of the most beautiful the most sacred of dreams which has always shone on the painful path of our wandering people.
We gentlemen aspire to our place in the sun not only to warm ourselves better but also for other more generous reasons. We are certain that when our people live a normal life on their own soil their national genius will fully unfold; we are certain that then the era will be reborn when they created not only for themselves but also for humanity the era when they produced eternal books and proclaimed eternal truths. A long sunlit road stretches before us. We live by this faith. It is this faith that inspires us. It is with this faith that we will win!"

Yefim Vladimirovich Tschlenow 1863-1918 was a "Zionist leader. He was a member of the board of the Jewish Colonial Trust .
At the Tenth Zionist Congress he was elected to the Zionist Executive and at the 11th Congress 1911 he was elected vice president of the Executive under Otto Warburg . He moved to Berlin and directed Zionist activities from there. In 1912 he again visited Ere Israel. During this visit he laid the cornerstone of the Haifa Technion as a member of its governing board and purchased the plot of land on which the Hadassah Hospital in Tel Aviv was later located.
Forced to leave Berlin at the outbreak of hostilities in 1914 Tschlenow returned to Russia 1915. By the end of that year he was in London for consultations with Naum Sokolow and Chaim Weizmann on the political situation and the program of the movement. During the war he was active in aiding Jewish refugees expelled from the front area by the Russian army command.
After the February Revolution in Russia 1917 Tschlenow headed the all-Russian Zionist Convention in Petrograd where he gave this speech.
