Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) In contemporary cloth bdg. Large roy. 8vo. (25 x 17 cm). In Ottoman script. 75 p. Hegira: 1290 = Gregorian: 1873. According to Gibb, 'münazaras' were a scale for Ottoman classical poetry, but Çelebi's münazara is longer as 'mesnevis' are. This 'münazara' (= skirmish, collide) narrates the endless war of winter between spring at Uludag Mountain (with its old Byzantine name Mt. Monk) in Bursa city. This work is an allegoric poem which contains characterization of all concepts such seasons, natural events etc. Winter and Spring Kings have different armies and during this poem they fight on. Hurricane is supreme commander of winter, some flowers are soldiers of spring and full of imageries this masterpiece includes. Lami'i Çelebi named the mountain as 'Uludag' in that work firstly instead of Mt. Monk. According to Agâh Sirri Levend, Münazara was written in 1522 by Çelebi. Although Lamii has about 40 works by researchers, there are 27 works that are certain to belong to him. In the Ottoman world, he was known for his prose (mathnawi) rather than poetic works. Lamii's poem, unlike other "adaptation" is a work which was written with an original subject by him. This is First Printed Edition. Özege 14810. Extremely rare. One of the gems of Turkish literature.

The purpose of the pamphlet is to encourage Welsh emigration to Ohio Indiana and Illinois at an interesting time. It was translated twice 1911 and 1978 and a description of the latter says that the subtitle is "A look at the State of Ohio Notes on a Journey from the Ohio Valley to Wales History of Welsh Settlements in Ohio. Copies are held NSTC by Harvard the Bodleian the British Library and Library of Congress. [California - Early Photography] [San Francisco and the Bay Area]
A Pair of Photograph Albums Documenting San Francisco Monterey and the Surrounding Areas in the Late 1880s
Northern California 1880. 4to one album in burgundy cloth the other oblong brown pebbled cloth. Seventy-one sepia-toned and cyanotype photographs most measuring 6 ½ x 4 ½ inches. Near fine with some light wear to albums photographs very good or better with very good contrast some showing a hint of fading. A very early pair of vernacular photograph albums centering on the experiences of a wealthy family in San Francisco Monterey and the surrounding areas in the late 1880s. The bulk of the images show the family and their unidentified circle in domestic scenes with the vernacular architecture and landscapes of the Bay Area on full display. Other images show landmarks including Golden Gate Park the Francis Scott Key monument various views of the first Hotel del Monte in Monterey which would burn in 1887 dating the photographs to the period prior to the fire. The album also includes photographs of African American families. <br /> <br /> The image quality is generally quite strong and the photographer was either a professional assembling the album which includes many portraits of family and presumed friends for themselves or the work of a highly skilled amateur. The Initials on the front pastedown are “M.J.R.†though this could be a later owner. The albums were from the estate of the muralist Clara Fargo Thomas who was a resident of New York and could possibly have been from one of her family members though we are unable to glean much detail from the contents. The few annotations offer little clues one just reading “5/11/89 - Golden Gate Park†and another identifying a house as 509 Webster St. in San Francisco though the typical Victorian architecture and sloped street of the house suggest it could have just been a photograph of San Francisco’s unique architecture. <br /> <br /> The photographs of the people give insight into the lives of the new wealthy class of San Francisco residents of the late 19th century with others interestingly showing rural scenes and people. The photographer also had an eye for the flora of the region which is displayed throughout. It is unclear what the relationship of the African-American subjects was to the photographer and why they appear in the album. Overall a compelling group of images and the earliest example of vernacular photograph albums of California images we can find in the trade. unknown

The documents include a printed 'Certificate of Thanks' from the RLSS with facsimile signature of Earl Mountbatten of Burma made out to 'Captain G. P. Rimington Nyeri' and dated 1963; 1p. foolscap 8vo. Also present are five Typed Letters Signed from Alwyn E. Biscoe Chief Secretary to Rimington in Kenya. All on RLSS London letterhead 2 May and 21 July 1950 and 16 February 4 May and 19 June 1951. All 1p. 4to. The first two discussing 'the appointment of Mr. Tattersall as Hon. Representative for the Kisumu district' and Rimington's resignation as 'Hon. Representative for Nairobi'; the third regarding Rimington's position on the 'Examination Panel'; the fourth and fifth concerning the RLSS's 'Diamond Jubilee Annual Council Meeting'. Copy of grant of administration to Walsh's daughter Philis the estate being sworn under three hundred pounds. Mention made of Walsh's two other daughters Katharine and Margaret. Wednesbury and London. 108 items in a variety of formats and including 17 Autograph Letters Signed; 14 Typed Letters Signed; 47 telegrams on 51 leaves a 'Statement of Election Expenses' a mimeographed 'Agent's Report. Year 1932' 4to first 3 pp only; 3 election fliers; an 'Admission Ticket' to Davis's 'Adoption Meeting'; a printed notice by Davis 'To All Primrose Leaguers'; and seventeen black and white photographs. All but a few items laid down in a folio cloth scrapbook by W. Straker Ltd London. All texts clear and complete with the collection in fair condition on aged paper. An interesting and evocative collection casting light on the day-to-day business of British electioneering in the Great Depression. As the collection indicates Davis was a likeable and larger than life figure. He served in the Royal Tank Corps 1914-1918 being awarded the Military Cross and the Royal Armoured Division 1939-1945. Following the elevation of the sitting Conservative member to the Earldom of Dudley his adoption as Conservative candidate at the Wednesbury by-election was reported as follows in The Times 11 July 1932: 'In consultation with party headquarters a candidate has been secured in Captain Rex G. Davis of Richmond Surrey who played hockey for surrey and for the Army and is a useful amateur boxer. The Wednesbury district the home of the metal tube trade has suffered greatly in the past from the dumping of foreign raw and finished material and there are upwards of 5000 unemployed . The "means test" is likely to play a big part in the campaign and Captain Davis points out that the Socialists were the inventors of that scheme.' The election was keenly fought and Davis attributed his defeat by the Labour candidate J. W. Banfield to 'gross misrepresentations made to the electorate on the question of the means test adding that with only three weeks in which to explain the true facts he had not the time to dispel the fears created in the minds of the local unemployed' Times 28 July 1932. Davis's agent A. W. Allen in his 'Report' below attributed the defeat to the fact that 'the time was most inopportune' with the National Government 'doing work that was most unpopular but absolutely necessary to save the Country and lay a foundation for it's sic future prosperity'. The first item in the volume is Davis's 3-page 12mo election flier: 'Wednesbury Bye-Election 1932 Vote for Capt. Rex Davis M.C. The National Candidate who stands for Wednesbury and Empire'. The flier is followed by the first of several communications to Davis from Conservative Party Vice-Chairman Captain Sir George Bowyer: a 'Personal & Private' Autograph Letter Signed 4to 2 pp 29 June 1932 in which he explains that he has 'suddenly had a brain-wave that you were probably the only man who could hold Wednesbury for us'. Other correspondents encouraging Davis before the election and commiserating with him after his defeat include Davis's agent A. W. Allen who testifies to his 'regard and admiration' and his backer James Groves of Heathfield Park; the Earl of Powis; Lord Stonehaven Conservative Party Chairman; Godfrey Locker Lampson; David Margesson Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasury; A. M. Lyons; W. J. Womersley; E. W. Easom and Reginald Bennett of the Primrose League; Ernest Brown. Eight of the photographs are 19 x 14 cm and show what the Times 26 July 1932 described as Davis's 'cheerful and vigorous' campaigning style with him surrounded by female factory workers labourers and election workers in front of the 'Rex Davis Committee Room'. Another 23 x 18 cm print shows him in the centre of a group of men making 'poppies' for the Royal British Legion appeal. No place or date. London c.1818. 1p. on 29 x 7 cm piece of unwatermarked laid paper probably cut down with no indication of printer or date. Printed with the long s. In good condition on lightly-aged paper. 64 lines arranged in eight eight-line stanzas. The first stanza reads: 'BRITAIN! brave and generous nation Listen to my plaintive strain Tho' exalted be my station! Day and night I sigh in pain; Here I came a helpless stranger With no friend to take my part Braved the stormy ocean's danger From home for ever to depart.' She appeals to her 'Good Uncle' i.e. King George III whose wife is described as 'your Queen a pious lady' asking him how he can stand by and 'Let a shameless woman trample On decency's offended laws'. A later reference to 'the Countess' makes it clear that this is Frances Villiers Countess of Jersey. The last stanza reads: 'There from empty pomp retreating Childless mother widow'd wife! My lost titles none repeating Let me lead a peaceful life. When you think on my sad story Britons drop a pitying tear! And fair England's fame and glory Shall to me be ever dear!' Virginia Estate; emigration from England Part of a Manuscript Letter written from Carter Hall Millwood Clarke County Virginia to an Englishman intending to emigrate to America discussing various elements of life there including dress
Carter Hall Millwood Clarke County Virginia. 21 February 1876. 4pp. 12mo. 210 lines. The first bifolium of a letter only and hence lacking a signature. In fair condition on lightly-aged paper with closed tears along fold lines. George Burwell who had inherited Carter Hall in 1814 see below had died three years before the writing of this letter and the identity of its author is unknown although he does claim to be a 'Scotchman'. The letter begins: 'Dear Sir Your letter of Jany 31 is received. I am glad to answer any questions but I must not be supposed to advise you in any thing regarding a change of residence. No man can think for another and <> I can only give true replies to any questions upon you must lie the onus of exhaustive questioning. - Again do not forget that I can speak only of the district - circumstances alter much in various places.' He asks him to bring out 'a parcel or two from England when you come'. There follow six numbered sections discussing various elements of life in Virginia beginning with the climate: 'July & August are our hottest months. Your families should arrive in Baltimore at about Sept 15. The temperature at Baltimore will probably be about 75o or 80o all the time from Aug 15 to Sept 15'. The second section discusses 'habitation' and employment. In section 3 he describes 'grass land' as 'much inferior to England '. Section 4: 'I mean to imply that a good farmer in a fair farm here will do as well as a tenant at home who pays rent - & I take into consideration that in capital of 5/ in so calculating.' Section 5 is on 'Sheep'. Section 6 begins: 'Men & boys were strong hollands in summer - poor people wear vests except on Sunday - as a rule you get these things better & cheaper here - than in England'. A long discussion of dress for both men and women follows 'Summer prints for ladies are good & cheap here - no use to bring them - they are called calicoes here But muslines grenadines too are dearer here and should be brought out'. Other topics include 'household stores': 'We find it quite expedient to get out the following articles - as their representatives here are either bad or too dear English mustard Worcester sauce Scotch marmalade Tea - oatmeal for my boys breakfast - I am a Scotchman sago tapioca curry powder canary seed if you have a bird'. Also 'Medicines' 'Seeds'. 'Bring no harness or carriages - There is nothing in Gt. Britain to equal the carriages in this country . I may advise you to go to Phipps Saddlers Holborn London who will give you saddles exactly like mine - cheaper & equal in leather to any in England - his bridles are first class also.' The letter ends with advice on 'hunting spurs' and 'thong'. Carter Hall is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A grand house and plantation located in the lower Shenandoah River valley it was the estate of the family of Lieut-Col. Nathaniel Burwell 1750-1814. It was also a home for Burwell's cousin Edmund Randolph who had been United States Attorney General and later Secretary of State under George Washington. George Burwell 1799-1873 inherited the estate in 1814 and added a large portico. It served as headquarters for Stonewall Jackson during part of the American Civil War and was raided and sacked by Union troops during the war. <p><strong>A rare example of Russian text of the Enlightenment --- "The best and most luxurious edition" of Catherine's famous 'Great Instructions' </strong>such described by Count M.A. Korf then director of the Imperial Library. First published and "signé de la propre main de Sa Majesté Impériale" in 1768; this edition however is the only in several languages and illustrated.</p><p>These instructions were "largely compiled and adapted by Catherine personally from the texts of Montesquieu and Beccaria. Although the project was never brought to fruition the impulse behind it stands as one of the nobler concepts of Catherine's reign" Fekula 2013 for a later edition.</p><p>A major document of the Enlightenment it condemned torture and capital punishment and endorsed such principles as the equality of all before the law.</p><p>The illustration consists of two detailed symbolic engravings each repeated once by Roth d. 1798 an engraver from Nuremberg who mostly worked in Russia.</p><p><strong>"The most magnificent and desirable of the more than 40 editions of the Nakaz"</strong> Widener <strong>"one of the most remarkable political treatises ever compiled and published by a reigning sovereign in modern times"</strong> I. de Madariaga Russia in the Age of Catherine the Great 1981 p. 151. An earlier edition without mention of Newtonville in the title was published by the Central Congregational Church in 1890. An ambitious charitable cookbook of nearly eight hundred recipes for the most part brief and unattributed published in the year of the Church's incorporation as an independent congregation. A work too of intentional comprehensiveness with no fewer than twelve sorts of vegetable fritters eighteen ways to serve oysters seven versions of lemon pie and fourteen fruit sherbets. Isolated items of note: Bisque Ice Cream made with stale cocoanut macaroons Quince Water Ice Blackberry Flummery Lemon Beer and Tomato Wine with a possibly sacrilegious maneuver involving "French brandy". The imposing Central Congregational Church in the village of Newtonville within Newton a few miles west of downtown Boston is known to architecture historians as the only ecclesiastical entry in the catalogue of the Boston architects Hartwell & Richardson. Its original congregation had formed in 1868 but first worshiped in its own sanctuary only in 1895 just four years before the ladies of the church compiled Reliable Receipts. They celebrated their last service 12 January 2003. Some age-toning throughout; hinges sound but showing some peeling. Rare first and only edition of a report on the investigation of tea cultivation and production in Assam India and Ceylon. The Dutch cultural association Cultuur Maatschappij in Palakan-Salak asked H.J.Th. Netscher and Alexander Albert Holle to investigate the Assam and Ceylon tea cultivation and production with regard to the economic position of Java tea in the world market. Netscher and Holle had their investigations on tea cultivation and culture in British India and Ceylon printed but never put them on the market merely giving some copies to parties concerned with the tea industry. They gave the present copy to Norbert Pieter van den Berg head agent of the Dutch East Indian commercial bank at Batavia and president of the Javanese bank. The report discusses various aspects of tea and its cultivation including the geographic dissemination different kinds of tea seeds the conservation of tea seeds the process of drying tea leaves and the arrangement of tea factories. But the book also describes some remarkable things that caught Netscher and Holles attention of during their journey. They write for example about sugar and elephants. Nevertheless the main purpose of their report was to gather information on British-Indian tea cultivation especially regarding competion on the world market.The 22 albumen photographs in the present copy inserted through the whole book show mainly the tea gardens of Assam and Ceylon but also elephants and landscapes Netscher and Holle saw on their journey. A sign for that at least some of these photographs are contemporary is that they refer to their own train on one of the pictures. These pictures give this extensive and important report on tea cultivation enriching insights into the tea cultivation in British-India and Ceylon ca. 1900.Presentation copy from the Cultuur Maatschappij Parakan-Salak to Norbert Pieter van den Berg with some bolts at the end of the book unopened. Head and foot of spine slightly rubbed corners bumped some stains on the boards. America Europe 1945. Archive. Very good. Manuscript Archive. 2 three ring black binders with 41 letters and misc. ephemera. Letters were addressed to family and in Chester Vermont mainly to his brother Ray and his Aunt Florence. The letters are sorted into three phases: prewar U.S. training camps and from places in Europe. 2 letters were written by Private Lawrence before he enlisted in the Army circa 1942. <br /> <br /> 20 letters were written from training camps in the United States 1943-44. 12 letters were written by Lawrence somewhere in France Belgium and Germany from June 1944 to January 1945. The remaining 7 letters were written by family members before and after Private Lawrence was killed in action December 1944 - February 1945. These letters were returned to his family with the word "deceased" written or stamped on the envelopes. The archive also consists of 8 envelopes not matching the dated letters two change of address postcards 5 pieces of foreign money and misc. news clippings relating to the Allied Forces actions late in the War. One non-letter item included in the archive is a hand drawn December 25th 1944 Christmas greeting presumably drawn by Lawrence. In these letters Charles Lawrence is often homesick inquires about things in Vermont and how he is getting along in the Army. Many of his letters begin with a variation of "I am still in the land of the living." The handwriting is legible for the most part and the condition of the archive is very good. The first ring binder of letters encompasses Private Charles Lawrence's pre War draft and his training in various U.S. camps. Training camp letters were written on nice Army letterhead paper from places such as Fort Devin Massachusetts; Fort McClellan Alabama and the U.S. Naval Construction Training Center Camp Peary Williamsburg Virginia. While training in the States Private Lawrence yearned to return home before he was shipped off to Europe. "If I get back to the States after I leave you can bet I wont stay in this army if I can help it." <br /> <br /> The second ring binder of letters begins with a letter dated June 1 1944 from some unknown location. The letters from Europe are censored and some letters were sent by V-Mail. While in Europe Charles asks about events back home and provides some general not to specific training and battle information. In the second letter in this binder dated June 9th Private Lawrence writes "Dear Aunt Florence and All: How are you folks feeling today hope you are feeling fine and dandy. Well here I am in a new camp and I am sorry to say that I cannot tell you where I am or the name of the camp. The camp is very good good climate food and it has lot of mountains around it." He adds "We do not get any training at this camp because they don't want anyone to know how many troops we have here at this camp but we have to go on two 11 miles hike every week." <br /> <br /> The letter dated June 11th one week after D-Day June 4 1944 has Lawrence awaiting transport to occupied France. He writes "This is my 40th letter since I came back from my furlough.The P.X. here is open all day and every time there isn't anything to do we all head for it most of us are broke including me."<br /> <br /> As the War heats up after June one comment in Lawrence's letters stands out:<br /> <br /> "I have been lying in a fox hole for two weeks now the only time when we can get up and walk around is at night it gets kinda tired laying in the fox holes eating H rations you can't stick your head out of the hole in the day time because you will get your head blowed off if you do so we just lay there.Boy when I get home I wont fuss about anything so long as I live I have been through everything now and it isn't any fun either." <br /> <br /> As the battles in Europe intensified in the fall of 1944 it appears Private Lawrence had been in very dangerous situations. In his November 23 1944 letter he writes ".a lot has happened to me since I last wrote to you last I have been in a lot of tough spots tough enough to lose all of my personal belongings such as mail letters that I hadn't answered toilet articles my pack overcoat raincoat etc. I am going to write to Barb and see if she will buy me toilet articles. My stationary is all gone.Today is Thanksgiving and I hope you folks had a good meal I haven't seen any turkey for us yet."<br /> <br /> On December 21st 1944 Charles writes his brother Ray from "Somewhere in Germany". He tells his brother "I have been busy as ever for the last few days and it looks like I will be for quite some time." The last full letter in this archive written by Private Lawrence is dated January 4th 1945. He writes to Aunt Florence & all the gang. He tells Aunt Florence "Well here I am again I thought I would write you a letter as long as I have some extra time this isn't much for news this time because I wrote Glady's a little this morning and told her all the news that there was at hand but when this letter is finished you will at least know that I am still alive & kicking." He signs off this letter with this - "Got to go now but I will be back before to long hope everyone is okay.".<br /> <br /> Private Charles Lawrence died 16 days later in Europe on January 20 1945 at the age of nineteen. He was buried in the American Cemetery in Luxembourg.<br /> <br /> From wikipedia:<br /> <br /> The 5th Infantry Division Mechanized—nicknamed the "Red Diamond"1 the "Red Devils" or "die Roten Teufel"—was an infantry division of the United States Army that served in World War I World War II and the Vietnam War and with NATO and the U.S. Army III Corps. It was disbanded and deactivated on 24 November 1992.2<br /> <br /> During World War II after D-Day the 5th Infantry Division after two years of training landed in Normandy on Utah Beach 9 July 1944 over a month after the initial D-Day landings and four days later took up defensive positions in the vicinity of Caumont. Launching a successful attack at Vidouville 26 July the division drove on southeast of Saint-Lô attacked and captured Angers 9–10 August captured Chartres assisted by the 7th Armored Division 18 August9 pushed to Fontainebleau crossed the Seine at Montereau 24 August crossed the Marne and seized Reims 30 August and positions east of Verdun. The division then prepared for the assault on Metz 7 September.10 In mid-September a bridgehead was secured across the Moselle south of Metz at Dornot and Arnaville after two attempts. A second crossing by the 10th Infantry Regiment at Arnaville was successful.11 The division continued operations against Metz 16 September to 16 October 1944 withdrew then returned to the assault on 9 November. The division crossed the German border 4 December captured Lauterbach a suburb of Völklingen on the 5th and elements reached the west bank of the river Saar 6 December before the division moved to assembly areas.<br /> <br /> On 16 December the Germans launched their winter offensive in the Ardennes forest the Battle of the Bulge and on the 18th the 5th ID was thrown in against the southern flank of the Bulge helping to reduce it by the end of January 1945. In February and March the division drove across and northeast of the Sauer where it smashed through the Siegfried Line and later took part in the Allied invasion of Germany.<br /> <br /> The 2nd Infantry Regiment is an infantry regiment in the United States Army that has served for more than two hundred years. It was constituted on 12 April 1808 as the 6th Infantry and consolidated with 4 other regiments in 1815 to form the present unit.1. When the Battle of the Bulge began the 2nd Infantry Regiment moved to the battle zone in the area of Nideranven Luxembourg. In January 1945 the 2nd Infantry Regiment forced a crossing of the Sauer River and attacked into the Siegfried Line. The regiment then crossed the Rhine River near Oppenheim and secured the crossing for other Third Army units. The unit then spearheaded the attack into Czechoslovakia and was located near the town of Volary when the word came to cease all forward movement at 08:31 on 7 May 1945. unknown

<p>Cambridge England: The Festival Theatre 1930.</p><p><br />Rare program for a 1930 production of Chekhov's "The Cherry Orchard" at the Festival Theatre in Cambridge England. <br /><br />Tyrone Guthrie directed the production which featured several young actors who went on to acclaimed careers including Robert Donat Frederick Piper Flora Robson Miriam Lewes Evan John Barbara Nixon Philip Thornley and Catharina Ferraz. Guthrie himself also went on to a great career. <br /><br />Robert Donat who played the landowner Semyonov-Pistchick later won the Academy Award for Best Actor in the 1939 film "Goodbye Mr. Chips." He beat out Clark Gable in "Gone With the Wind." Donat has contributed an article on the playing of Hamlet which of course has nothing to do with "The Cherry Orchard" but whatever. <br /><br />Also notable in this program dated May 10 1930 are the numerous advertisements for such things as luxury cars evening hats restaurants home furnishings and the like. Clearly the Depression hadn't yet left its mark on Cambridge. <br /><br />Alderson Burrell Horne who adopted the stage name of Anmer Hall managed the Festival Theatre in Cambridge and brought in Tyrone Guthrie as the resident director. Guthrie has contributed a "producer's note" to the program. <br /><br />This program is scarce. No institutional holdings listed in OCLC. <br /><br />PHYSICAL DETAILS: Octavo 8.25 x 6 inches; 202 x 155 mm 26 pages including covers in stapled illustrated wrappers soft covers. <br /><br />CONDITION: Small area of paper loss to lower right corner of cover staples badly rusted 2 leaves detached from staples rubbing to spine some creasing to pages. Group of Chinese American Vintage Price-tags
United States. Early 20th Century. A group of 11 hole-punched price-tags in the shape of an American route shield printed in red and black on stiff card approx 5 x 4.5 cms with on the verso Chinese text in pen and ink 2 with revised prices; one tag with white-paper laid down on the verso the group age-toned and flecked one tape-stained another strengthened with brown-paper at the top but all in sound condition. A group of vintage American price-tags in the route-shield shape mostly relating to Chinese teas one stating in English "Lipton Tea 52 cents" from the condition of the tags and the text corrections used multiple times. The tags notated in Chinese on the verso were used for an impressive range of mostly oolong varieties including Tieguanyin Jasmine Longjing Wuhe and Lychee. <br> <br>A remarkable group of tea ephemera from an early twentieth century Chinese-American grocer based in Seattle. . unknown

Engraved bond in red and black 51.7 x 33 cm central fold corners trimmed elaborate foliated borders signatures of the Viceroy of Canton the Chinese Minister in London and the Director of the Chinese and British Corporation on the verso text in three bordered panels including a finely engraved steam train; together with a separate leaf of coupons approx. 51.2 x 20.5 cm numbered 3 - 20 1 & 2 excised the bond slightly rippled and the outer edge discoloured the coupons with edge toning and staining on the verso and marked £100.0.0 in ink but the both in very good condition. Impressive bond issue with the coupon redemption date running until 1985 !. The Kowloon-Canton Railway KCR was the first cross-border railway connecting Hong Kong with mainland China. <br> <br>"Discussions between the Colonial Office in London the Hong Kong Government and the British & Chinese Corporation led to an agreement in late 1904 that the Hong Kong Government would undertake the financing construction and operation of the section of the line within Hong Kong. The remaining section to Canton Guangzhou was financed through a loan raised by the British & Chinese Corporation on behalf of the Chinese Government which operated the section after its construction by the corporation. <br> <br>Settling the detailed financing arrangements for the British and Chinese sections proved to be complicated because the funding of the British Section as it became known depended on the raising of the loan for the Chinese Section. The arrangements were finally ratified by the Hong Kong Government's passage of the Railway Loans Ordinance in 1905 clearing the way for construction of the British Section. It took until 1907 however for the loan agreement for the Chinese Section to be concluded with the financing being provided by way of a bond issue floated in London in April of the same year. <br> <br>The importance attached to the project was reflected in a speech made to the Hong Kong Legislative Council by the colonial governor Sir Frederick Lugard in 1908: <br> <br>"You will recall that in 1905 it was decided to build the railway by means of a loan. It was not a question of whether the undertaking would be an immediately remunerative concern; it was not a question of whether the railway should pay interest and sinking fund on the capital expended or even if it would at once pay working expenses. It was a question of preserving the predominance of Hong Kong.
