‎The Historie of Tithes. That is the practice of payment of them. The positive laws made for them. The opinions touching the right of them. A review of it is also annext which both confirmes it and directs in the use of it.‎

‎London.: No pubisher. 1618. 6 xxii 12 491 5 pages title page printed in red and black dedication preface contents references errata 18.4 x 14.8 cms endpapers renewed with the original front endpapers laid down aged-toned and chipped title-page toned and a little faded upper corner chipped with the inked owners' inscription of Thos. Bryan Richards 1798 and Wm. Cooke early inked marginalia and underlining; contemporary hollow-backed vellum manuscript author and title on the spine tidemark to the lower corner of the text leaves affecting the margin only a good sound copy. First edition of an antiquarian classic by John Selden 1584-1654 eminent jurist polymath prolific scholar and in recent times celebrated for his ownership of the earliest surviving Chinese merchant map of East Asia re-discovered with justifiable fanfare as a treasure of the Bodleian Library by Robert Batchelor in 2008. <br> <br>At the time of its release Selden's "The History of Tithes": "gave great offense to the clergy and was vigorously refuted in a number of volumes to which Selden was forbidden the right to print replies" Pforzheimer. It has been noted that the absence of the printer's name and the place of publication showed that Selden anticipated an unfavourable reaction to his denial of divine right of tithes. He was not disappointed. The work was suppressed and Selden was forced to apologize for having given offense-- and the book was withdrawn from circulation. His work was much studied: this copy with early marginalia: "by this Historie the Right of tithing belong not to ye profession of ye Canonist Civilian or Divine but with Lawyers." the last three words hastily crossed out. <br> <br>Early owners include London Antiquary Thomas Bryan Richards whose extensive Library was sold by King & Lochée in 1812. . ‎[CIRCLE OF THE GRAHAME FAMILY]‎

‎"New Zealand ferns collected for Miss Grahame by her friends at Hazelbank Auckland 1860"".‎

‎Auckland New Zealand : s.n. 1860. Handmade album. Octavo 190 x 120 mm the covers taken from a copy of The poetical works of Sir Walter Scott Edinburgh : A. & C. Black 1857 of limp tan cloth with decoration in blind and gilt device to front and rear; the book's original pastedowns and endpapers intentionally preserved the front free-endpaper with a mounted presentation label inscribed in ink in a neat hand: 'New Zealand ferns collected for Miss Grahame by her friends at Hazelbank Auckland 1860' followed by 28 loose sheets with pressed native fern specimens mounted recto only each accompanied by a handwritten caption identifying the specimen by its correct botanical name; the skilfully mounted and knowledgeably labelled specimens with very occasional minor loss the paper mounts with a minimal amount of foxing but overall the contents remarkable well preserved. This charming ""do-it-yourself"" Auckland album represents by far the earliest collection of New Zealand ferns we have handled. Although pteridomania - or fern fever - was undeniably already a phenomenon in the colony in the 1860s the album pre-dates by at least a decade for example the appearance of the first commercial souvenir albums by such specialist preparators as Eric Craig and Thomas Cranwell. The specimens in this album were clearly selected for their aesthetic appeal the majority being particularly delicate and skeletal-like. We believe that the young woman to whom the album was presented by her friends identified only as Miss Grahame is likely to have been a daughter of Auckland merchant Walter Grahame. Walter's brother the wealthy and influential William Smellie Grahame had already returned to England with his own family by 1858. ""Hazelbank"" was the name of a property in Wynyard Street Auckland which was later owned by MÄori businesswoman and philanthropist Mary Geddes. It is now the home of the Elam School of Fine Arts University of Auckland. hardcover‎

‎[CIRCUMNAVIGATION OF THE GLOBE by the CORVETTE AURORA]. [BOSQUET, Victor].‎

‎Die Reise S.M. Corvette "Aurora" nach Brasilienen und den La Plata-Staaten in den Jahren 1884-1885.‎

‎Vienna: Carl Gerold's Sohn 1885. Contemporary half brown cloth with the original publisher's printed wrappers mounted on the boards. Large 8vo. With 3 lithographed folding maps one coloured showing the route of His Majesty's Ship Aurora along the east coast of South America. First edition of an account of the 8-month expedition to circumnavigate the globe in 1884-1885 by His Majesty's Ship Aurora a vessel launched by the Kaiserliche und Königliche Kriegsmarine Austro-Hungarian Imperial and Royal Navy to Brazil and the Río de la Plata basin. This voyage commanded by Victor Bosquet was primarily intended as practical training for naval cadets but also helped to facilitate the trade between South America and the Austro-Hungarian Empire as well as political and economic interests. On 27 August 1884 the corvette Aurora sailed from Pola to Gibraltar and further via St. Cruz on Tenerife to Bahia. After a short stay of about ten days the Aurora sailed to Rio de Janeiro also passing some other places to Buenos Aires and from there via Montevideo back to Pernambuco. Thereafter the Aurora sailed back to Pola via São Miguel Ponta Delgada and Gibraltar reaching Pola's central port on 25 April 1885.The present account drawing on the reports of the commanders of the Aurora paints a detailed picture of its voyage including some hydrographic navigational and meteorological observations. These are also included in the more descriptive navigational part of the voyage. Moreover it includes some information on the places where they anchored including Bahia Pernambuco Rio de Janeiro and many more. Die Reis S.M. Corvette "Aurora" was published separately and as an appendix to volume 10 of the hydrographical journal of the Austrian-Hungarian Navy Mittheilungen aus dem Gebiete des Seewesens. Altogether a highly interesting official record of the Austro-Hungarian circumnavigation of the globe via Brazil and the Río de la Plata basin and a great source of information for the Austro-Hungarian navy’s trading expeditions to this region. With the library stamp of the Royal Danish maritime library "Marinens Bibliothek" on the front wrapper a stamped subject indication on the front paste-down "Sørejser. b. 1884-1886" "Sea voyages ." and an inscription in ink "Reise" on the front wrapper. Wrappers on the boards a little browned spine a little discoloured with some tears on the folds of the first lithographed map not affecting the image but otherwise in very good condition.l Borba de Moraes p. 707; WorldCat 743212274 & 780852276 3 copies. ‎[CIVIL RIGHTS] SEAY, The Reverend Solomon Snowden‎

‎I Was There By The Grace of God‎

‎Montgomery Alabama: The S.S. Seay Sr. Educational Foundation 1990. Stated First Edition. Octavo. 23.5cm. Publisher's white rexine titled in gilt to spine and front board. Dustjacket. xii; 297pp 1pp Biographical information to rear. Bumping to corners and spine ends some soiling of the white boards here and there in a scuffed and rubbed dustjacket with some creasing to edges and some areas of loss most notably the upper right corner of the front panel and a small triangle of loss to the rear panel. The printing process used for the dustjacket seems to have resulted in a very easily scuffed and rubbed end result with the majority of copies of this title showing signs of this. Internally clean with a lengthy gift inscription to the pastedown from Nathaniel and Karen Jackson of Montgomery Alabama along with a list of contact numbers for members of the Jackson family. A very good copy in a dustjacket that shows wear without surrendering durability. <br /> <br /> The Reverend Seay was a prolific activist for civil rights in Alabama beginning with his attempts in 1949 to support a young African-American woman in her case against two Alabama police officers whom she accused of rape. A few years later Seay was indicted along with 88 other activist protestors for his involvement in the Alabama Bus Boycott and in 1960 he was once again indicted for his support of the Committee to Defend Martin Luther King and the Struggle for Freedom in The South and their part in the March 1960 New York Times full page advertisement entitled "Heed Their Rising Voices. ‎[Civil War – Massachusetts – Death and Burial] Trustees of the North Sudbury Burying Ground‎

‎Notice to Stone Layers / Proposals will be received on FRIDAY the 17th instant at the / North Sudbury Burying Ground / for laying about 25 rods of wall around the addition to said ground‎

‎Concord Massachusetts: Benjamin Tolman 1863. Printed broadside 11 ¼ x 10 inches. Some tearing at folds very good. A straightforward but telling piece documenting the expansion of a Massachusetts burying ground during the American Civil War signed in type by three trustees of the North Sudbury Burying Ground. As casualties mounted and remains were returned to hometowns existing cemeteries were frequently enlarged with new land enclosed and improved by contract. The specification of “25 rods†over 400 feet of wall indicates a substantial addition typical of mid-war efforts to increase capacity in established town burial grounds rather than create entirely new sites. Sudbury contributed roughly 150–170 men to Union service of whom approximately eleven died a scale of loss consistent with small Massachusetts towns and sufficient to register locally in burial and memorial practices. We find no other records of ephemera or broadsides relating to Civil War-era cemetery expansion. This notice is not at AAS. Benjamin Tolman unknown‎

‎[Clarke, Harry] The Committee of the Irish National War Memorial‎

‎Ireland's Memorial Records 1914-1918 Being the Names of Irishman Who Fell in the Great European War 1914-1918 compiled by The Committee of the Irish National War Memorial with decorative Borders by Harry Clarke.‎

‎2003. Reprint of the original edition from 1923. 8 Volumes complete set. Uckfield The Naval & Military Press 2003. Folio. 3200 pages. Original softcover. Excellent condition with only minor signs of external wear. The price for this heavy set includes worldwide free shipping per Courier ! In the early 1920s £5000 of the National War Memorial funds were spent collecting the records of all the fallen and publishing them in Ireland’s Memorial Records. One hundred copies of the eight-volume set were printed ‘for distribution through the principal libraries of the country’.The printing decoration and binding of the volumes was carried out by Irish artists and workers of the highest reputation and efficiency’. The most remarkable feature of the volumes are the ‘beautiful symboic borders designed by the artist Harry Clarke best-known for his work in stained glass. Contained in the eight volumes are the details of over 49000 fatal casualties. The men and women commemorated either served in Irish Regiments or were born or were resident in Ireland at the time of their death and were serving with units from Britain and its empire. The principle information given for each person whereas being similar to Soldiers Died in the Great War quite often contains additional facts such as age and elaboration on how killed etc. For example the entry ‘died of wounds received in Sinn Fein Rebellion’ has been noticed. Details of pre-war medal entitlement and other odd facts occasionally occur. This is the only publication to bring so many of the Great War dead from Ireland together in order that they may be individually and collectively honoured and remembered. Here is a unique opportunity to own one of the rarest sets of memorial books ever published which have never been available for sale to private individuals. ‎[COLERIDGE, Sara] THE LOYAL SERVANT [MAILLES, Jacques de]‎

‎The right joyous and pleasant history of the feats gests and prowesses of the chevalier bayard the good knight without fear and without reproach‎

‎London: John Murray 1825. In two volumes. xv 1 294; 4 286pp. Original publisher’s drab paper boards printed paper lettering-pieces. Rubbed. Booksellers ticket of C. C. Wetton to FEP of Vol. I armorial bookplates of John Lees to both FEPs internally clean and crisp. Pierre Terrail seigneur de Bayard c. 1476-1524 renowned French Knight commonly known as Chevalier de Bayard. The epitome of chivalric virtue Bayard was one of the most renowned military commanders of the sixteenth century Europe. He served with distinction under Charles VIII securing numerous victories during the First Italian War. Under Louis XII he was the hero of many combats; on one occasion he is said to have single-handedly defended a bridge over the Garigliano against 200 Spanish troops an exploit that brought him such renown that Pope Julius II sought unsuccessfully to entice him into the papal service. In 1508 he fought at the siege of Genoa and later at Padua. Despite being severely wounded at Brescia he nevertheless enthusiastically joined the Battle of Ravenna 1512. In 1515 on the accession of Francis I he was made lieutenant general of Dauphiné notably holding Mézières with 1000 men against the opposing forces of Holy Roman emperor Charles V totalling 35000 troops. He was totally wounded whilst campaigning in Italy in 1524 dying in the midst of the enemy. For his unwavering gaiety and kindness his contemporaries dubbed him 'le bon chevalier'; as the centuries have passed the epithet e chevalier sans peur et sans reproche the knight without fear and beyond reproach has been more commonly adopted. This first edition in English of French author Jacque de Mailles' biography of the Chevalier was translated by Sara Coleridge 1802-1852 the only daughter of Samuel Taylor Coleridge. This was her second published work following her translation of Dobrizhoffer's book on Paraguay Historia de Abiponibus 1784 issued by John Murray in 1822. . First edition in English. 8vo. The idea came to us as the 1911 books are now out of print and are constantly in demand. Therefore we decided on this means for raising money for our Hospital.". Driver further notes: "The first section of the text titled 'General Suggestions' and 'Small Leakages of a Household suggestions for economy and cleaning is signed Mrs. Playfair ie. Charlotte Playfair the wife of James Playfair a leading member in the industrial and municipal affairs of Midland. Both Mrs. Playfair and her husband were involved with the development of St. Andrews Hospital at the time of the book's publication. The scrap book was a gift of Jack and Mindy Castles; Mr. Castle's grandfather having married a daughter of Eshleman. This copy has been digitized. The handbill contains a plea to Confederate Veterans to contribute to a fund for a memorial in Richmond: Battle "As well said by Comrade Rouss: "The mementos of the struggle of the South.are scattered broadcast over the country. Should they not be collected and provision be made for their preservation. Then as our ranks are being rapidly thinnned by the Scythe of Time let the comparatively few of us that remain at once take the matter in hand and labor for the realization of the prophetic vision and joyous hope of the patriot orator Senator Daniel of Virginia--in the consummation of a completed Battle Abbey.which would beÊÊAn undying memorial of the people who fought their own battles in their own way for their own liberty as they conceived it for their own independence as they desired it and who need give to the world no other reason why." Stowell 1943. Stock a bit unevenly toned and lightly soiled small loss to bottom left-hand corner of two images not approaching text or image; overall Very Good. <br /> <br /> Three original illustrations including what appears to have been the proposed pictorial title page of an unpublished pamphlet titled "Civilians at War" a guide to the ongoing warfare and production now that the United States had entered World War II. Apart from the title page the illustrations depict examples of demolition and general purpose bombs by size from 100 to 4000 pounds accompanied by a nattily-clad gent for size. A dissected view of the 300 lb. general bomb is also provided. The third illustration shows the twelve Civilian Defense Emblems from auxiliary police and firemen to rescue and decontamination squads. <br /> <br /> The work almost certainly composed by fifteen-year-old Virginia Lee Stowell 1928-1994 of Waterbury Connecticut a major metal manufacturing hub during the War its Scoville Manufacturing Co. employing as many as 10000 workers at peak production. At the age of seventeen Stowell joined the Cadet Nursing Corps in March 1945 though by the time she received her certificate of membership on September 4th the war had been over for two days. Whether Stowell would have made a better nurse than draughtswoman is questionable though it is entirely possible that her impressively inked bombs were traced. unknown‎

‎[CONSERVATION] [SAVE THE REDWOODS LEAGUE] Grant, JD J D‎

‎Redwood Radio A Reverie‎

‎Berkeley CA: Save the Redwoods League. Undated but 1920s. 10 pp in pictorial stapled wrappers illustrated with photographs and line drawings. Small scribble mark on front cover minor creasing to back cover; very good. The Save the Redwoods League was founded in 1918 by conservationists John C. Merriam Madison Grant and Fairfield Osborn who were concerned about the accelerating destruction of old-growth redwood forest lands. Although best known for its role in preserving the coastal forests of Redwood National Park the organization also helped to protect the sequoias of Yosemite's Mariposa Grove. This rather quirky booklet advocates for protection of the big trees via a fanciful tale in which the redwoods "speak" by means of radio waves and tell of all the ancient things they have seen and known over the centuries beginning at the time of the birth of Christ and ending with "the voice of John Muir rising in appeal for his beloved redwoods. "'Through all the eventful centuries since Christ's birth' came the message 'God has cared for these trees saved them from drought disease avalanche and a thousand storms. It is left to the American people to save them from the sawmills. Help to save the Redwoods!'" Four copies located in OCLC. Save the Redwoods League unknown‎

‎[CONSTITUTION OF THE FRENCH FIRST REPUBLIC / CONSTITUTION DE L'AN III]:‎

‎CONSTITUTION DE LA RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE.‎

‎Toulouse: Douladoure. An. IV. 1795. Octavo. Stitched without wrappers likely as issued. Page edges untrimmed. Woodcut device emblematic of the French Republic to the title page. 62pp. A good copy with nibbling/loss to the top left-hand corner not affecting the text and a few minor marks to the title page and rear blank verso. The contents remain clean and in very good order. A scarce provincial printing of the Constitution of the Year III Constitution de l'an III the constitution of the French First Republic which established the Directory regime following the fall of Robespierre.</p><p>Adopted by the convention on 5 Fructidor Year III 22nd August 1795 and approved by plebiscite on 6th September its preamble formed the Declaration of the Rights and Duties of Man and of the Citizen of 1789. Largely the work of political theorist Pierre Daunou it established a bicameral legislature made all taxpaying French males over 25 eligible to vote in primary elections enfranchising around one million more citizens than the 1791 Constitution and contained an explicit ban on slavery.</p><p>It remained in effect until the coup of 18 Brumaire 9th November 1799 which effectively ended the Revolutionary period and began the rise to power of Napoleon Bonaparte. </p><p>A pleasing unsophisticated copy remaining in the same form as it would have been when it reached the hands of ordinary Frenchmen in year that it was issued. Toulouse: Douladoure. unknown‎
