‎[Counterculture] [The New Left]‎

‎A Collection of Forty-Six Photographs of New Left Protests and Festivals Presumably Taken by a Participant c. late 1960s‎

‎V.p. 1970. Thirty-three 11 x 14 images thirteen 8 x 10 images. Excellent. These photographs likely taken by a participant in the various events but probably printed in the 1970s encapsulate many of the iconic themes of the New Left. Most of the photographs show protesters at unidentified events though the clothing and settings are without a doubt the late 1960s and one photograph a close-up of Abbie Hoffman as well as several pictures of demonstrators being arrested suggest that the pictures may have been taken at the 1968 Democratic Convention. The smaller series of photographs show mud-caked festival-attendants in various states: having sex smoking marijuana walking pleasantly alongside each other and painting each other with mud. The pictures vary in technical quality but encapsulate the moment quite vividly with an intimacy lacking from most press photographs of the period and despite the student photography feel they show a pivotal moment in American social history with a sympathetic eye. A few photographs of an older woman at a protest and another of a military veteran appear to intend to portray the movement as having a broader purpose. Prints are well preserved and generally in excellent condition with a few prints which appear to be earlier showing some normal signs of wear. unknown‎

‎[Country Music] Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, Conway Twitty, Hank Snow, June Carter Cash, The Carter Family, Minnie P‎

‎Archive of photographs of country music acts circa 1970s‎

‎N.p.: N.p. 1970. Archive of 288 vernacular color photographs of country music acts from the 1970s housed in a contemporary photo album with the subject of nearly every photograph identified by manuscript ink captions. Occasional additional notations give a date range between 1972-1980 for the photographs with most being dated 1977-1979.

The photographs primarily consist of performers on stage indicating the photographer was near the stage with a strong sense of composition and timing. Photographs of performers casually posing for the camera indicate the photographer likely had backstage access for some of the performances.

Based on additional information in some of the handwritten captions the photographs were primarily taken at concerts or events in the Western New York region - Chautauqua Dunkirk Little Valley and Lakewood - all within an hour of each other as well as the nearby Erie County NY Fair and Expo and Pittsfield PA. Other locations include the New York State Fair and Pittsburgh PA.

Included are images of country music legends Johnny Cash Dolly Parton Loretta Lynn Conway Twitty Hank Snow June Carter Cash The Carter Family Minnie Pearl Tanya Tucker Tammy Wynette and Wanda Jackson. Also included are photographs of singers who while lesser known today were among the biggest stars of the era including Bobby Goldsboro Crystal Gayle Donna Fargo Freddy Fender Jeannie C. Riley Buddy Alan Charlie Walker Peggy Sue Bill Anderson Kenny Price LeRoy Van Dyke Lynn Anderson Jay Lee Webb Jean Shepard and Kitty Wells. Finally the album contains images of smaller and possibly even regional acts some of which appear unknown to us presenting a broad survey of a transitional era in country music as rock soul and pop began to fuse with the more traditional country sound that had begun declining in popularity toward the end of the previous decade.

For more details please inquire.

Photographs variously sized primarily 3.5 x 5 inches but up to 7.5 x 9.75 inches. Generally Near Fine.

Housed in an about Very Good generic photo album with starting and loss to the spine fraying and rubbing. ‎[Coyer, Gabriel François, abbé].‎

‎La noblesse commerçante.‎

‎Small octavo. Pp. 151, (1) publisher's ad. Plus engraved frontispiece. handsome device to title, decorative head-pieces. Includes the "Explication du frontispice". Hardcover, bound in contemporary marbled boards, spine with crimson morocco label lettered in gilt, date gilt stamped on foot. Fine, handsome copy. ~ First edition. Later editions followed, among them those printed in Amsterdam. Gabriel François, abbé Coyer, was a French man of letters and worldly cleric born in 1707. He entered the Society of Jesus, studying humanities and philosophy until he left the order in 1736. In 1741 he became private tutor to the young Duke of Bouillon (Prince of Turenne at the time). There followed public functions that saw him in attendance at some battles of the War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). His many works include a history of the Polish king Jan Sobieski, travel accounts of Holland and Italy, a study of ancient religions, belles-lettres, and a popular attack on the guild system, Chinki. He became a member of the Royal Academy of England and the Academy of Nancy. It is said that when he visited Voltaire at Ferney and announced his desire to return each year for three months, Voltaire replied that whereas Don Quixote had mistaken inns for castles, Coyer was mistaking castles for inns. He died in 1782. (See Henry C. Clarke: "Commerce, Culture, and Liberty: Readings on Capitalism before Adam Smith", Indianapolis, 2003.)‎

‎[Craik, Dinah Mulock] The Author of John Halifax‎

‎Children's Poetry‎

‎London: Macmillan 1881. First edition. Near Fine. Finely bound by J & JP Edmond & Spark of Aberdeen for S. Drostane's College. Full calf with gilt to spine and college crest in gilt to front board. All edges and endpapers marbled. Small bump to crown of spine; occasional light foxing largely confined to margins. Presentation inscription to front blank: "S. Drostane's College. John Patrick Cash Prize for Writing -- Third Form. Midsummer 1887. Presented by Major Cash Strathpeffer." A charming copy of this scarce book of poetry by a leading women's activist it is the only first edition on the market and is held by only 10 institutions in the U.S. according to OCLC.

A surreptitiously activist selection of poems designed for children by activist Dinah Mulock Craik. "Although she had the training to become a governess she turned to writing as a profession. Her earliest work was in genres that could be quickly written and sold.consolidating Dinah Mulock's reputation as a popular writer who delineated complex emotional states with unusual power and understanding" ODNB. Here she draws on her educational background to present juvenile readers with a mixture of fanciful poems throughout which she interweaves work on social justice. On the surface the presence of titles like Violets Young Dandelion and The Midsummer Fairy suggest that the collection will be a run-of-the-mill batch of lyrics for the young. Every so often however a poem will jar the reader by bringing up serious subjects. The Young Governess for example draws attention to how family poverty can force young girls -- still children themselves -- into the workforce. "I mean to be a governess And earn my daily bread; For we have many mouths to feed -- And oh! They must be fed.Though I am but just fourteen I'm big and stout and tall And I can learn my lessons best They say among us all." Other poems like Our Black Brother on Board an English Ship push children to see the injustices of racism and slavery to find human commonality and even to question the methods by which they're taught to assume superiority. "Bring him forward to the light Our black brother -- Knock his chains off horrid sight!.His poor mother Thought him as he walked or ran All that's beautiful in man." A scarce and important piece of educational activism presented as a prize in a Scottish schoolroom. Near Fine. Macmillan unknown‎

‎
1818 US NAVY Rules Regulations Crowninshield USS PEACOCK Provenance Pirates WOW

Exceptionally rare the "Rules Regulations and Instructions for the Naval Service of the United States" is a formal guidebook created under the authority of Benjamin Williams Crowninshield the Secretary of the Navy 1815-1818 to streamline and standardize practices across the naval forces of the United States. First published by Edward De Krafft in Washington 1818 the book was a response to an Act of Congress from February 7 1815 during James Madison's presidency which called for the establishment of the Board of Commissioners to oversee the Navy Department. This text served to guide the transition of the Navy into a peacetime force after the War of 1812 laying out detailed instructions for various ranks and positions from yard personnel and warrant officers to high-ranking officials. It covers a wide array of topics including ship maintenance naval ceremonies discipline and provisions as well as specific instructions for surgeons pursers marines and midshipmen. The regulations also provided for the handling of convoys and established clear guidelines for salutes military honors and other ceremonies. This text played a crucial role in shaping the growth structure and discipline of the U.S. Navy during the early 19th century especially during the presidencies of James Monroe John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson.

This particular copy belonged to the famous USS Peacock a sloop-of-war that played a significant role in the U.S. Navy during the early 19th century! Commissioned during the War of 1812 it was part of various naval operations including suppressing piracy in the Caribbean and patrolling South American waters during regional independence movements. After decommissioning in 1827 it was rebuilt for exploration and participated in the United States Exploring Expedition in 1838 eventually meeting its end on the Columbia Bar in 1841. The ship also took part in diplomatic missions such as conveying Francis Baylies to Argentina and engaging in treaty negotiations in Asia. Throughout its service the Peacock navigated various challenges including severe weather conditions and health crises among the crew. The fascinating post-war exploits of the USS Peacock's diplomatic and explorational missions are recorded in American diplomat Edmund Robert's notes that were published in 1837 under the title "Embassy to the Eastern Courts of Cochin-China Siam and Muscat in the U.S. Sloop-of-war Peacock".

Item number: #41562

Price: $2500

CROWNINSHIELD Benjamin Williams; BOARD OF NAVY COMMSIONERS OF THE UNITED STATES

Rules Regulations and Instructions for the Naval Service of the United States: Prepared by the Board of Navy Commissioners of the United States with the Consent of the Honorable the Secretary of the Navy; In Obedience to an Act of Congress Passed Seventh February 1815 Entitled "An Act to Alter and Amend the Several Acts for Establishing a Navy Department by Adding Thereto a Board of Commissioners."

Washington: E. ‎Thirteen Real Photo Postcards of Cake Walk Dancers in France c. 1900–1905‎

‎Paris: S.I.P. 1905. Silver gelatin photographs on postcard stock measuring 3 ½ x 5 ½ inches. Some with small pinholes at top; overall Near Fine. The cakewalk chalkline-walk or walkaround—a dance developed by enslaved African Americans on southern plantations—made its first public appearance at the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial where it was celebrated with the award of a cake. After that most American minstrel shows had some version of a cakewalk in their repertoire. Later oral accounts of plantation life would reveal that the dance had been used as a way for enslaved people to mock their owners without punishment.

Around the turn of the century the cakewalk gained enormous popularity in France. The Florida Creole Girls were one of the first troupes to popularize it performing it at the famous Casino de Paris music hall. The photographs on these postcards show performers from the Nouveau Cirque a circus located in Paris at 251 Rue Saint-Honoré and owned by Joseph Oller co-founder of the Moulin Rouge. Ten images show Ruth “Rudy†and Frederick “Fredy†Walker who were known professionally as The Walkers but credited on the images as “Les Enfants Nègresâ€; their cakewalk performances in France which was filmed by Louis Lumière and led to long careers as performers. The other four images show an unidentified pair of men one dressed in women’s clothing who perform under the name “Les Nègresâ€. S.I.P. unknown‎

‎Histoire d'Angleterre représentée par figures accompagnées de discours‎

‎Paris: Chez l'auteur F.A. David 1784. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Paris Chez l'auteur F.A. David 1784 1784 and 1800. Quarto three volumes iv 194; iv 211; and iv 116 pages plus an engraved title in each volume and a total of 111 engraved plates with tissue-guards. Early mottled calf; spines extensively tooled in gilt with contrasting morocco lettering-pieces; sides bordered with gilt rolls; all edges gilt; spines tanned with the leather now somewhat brittle; joints splitting but sound; covers slightly worn; plates occasionally a little tanned; a few spots of foxing; loss to the corner of a few leaves likely a production flaw not affecting the text; a few minor signs of age and use but internally a crisp clean wide-margined set in excellent condition meriting a sympathetic restoration of the bindings. The 111 plates illustrating scenes from English history from Roman times to the American War of Independence are engraved by François-Anne David after designs by Nicolas Lejeune Monet and Gios. The third volume published after a hiatus of 16 years has the extended title 'Histoire d'Angleterre depuis la descente de Jules César jusqu'à la fin de la guerre d'Amérique'. The tone is perhaps coloured by the rivalry between France and England concluding '. l'Angleterre humiliée et vaincue recevoit le juste prix de sa tyrranie injuste et sanguinaire par la perte entière d'une de ses colonies la plus importante et les Etats-Unis de l'Amérique eurent une place marquée parmi les puissances libres et souveraines'.
The 'Gazette nationale ou le Moniteur universel' for 5 November 1794 contains a lengthy advertisement for David's series of illustrated histories indicating that the print run included a deluxe issue with the plates printed in 'bistre sanguin anglais' on wove paper; this set is from the standard issue printed in black ink. 3 items.
