All aspects of the conditions of the American Indians in 1890 are reported here. The lengthy introduction provides charts and tables summarizing Indian populations in 1822 1832 1850 1853 1860 1867 1870 1880 and 1890. The introduction is followed by a historic review an overview of policy and administration of Indian affairs. The next section is comprised of a review of the 1890 Indian population Indian schools Indian lands and reservations including much additional statistical information. The majority of the volume pages 129-634 is comprised of a report of "Condition of Indians Taxed and Indians Not Taxed" for each state or territory individually. These are detailed reports addressing each tribe within each state or territory. This splendid volume contains 11 striking chromolithographic plates by Julian Scott 1st Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient; two 2-1/2 page colored fold-out plates by Walter Shirlaw; and 6 colored plates by Peter Moran and Gilbert Gaul. The 3 important large folding colored maps are in exceptionally fine condition: "Map Showing Indian Reservations Within the Limits of the United States" 33"x21" "Map of the Linguistic Stocks of the American Indians" 20"x17" by J.W. Powell and the map of "Indian Territory and Oklahoma" 29"x22". "This is an exhaustive census of the Native American population of the United States at the close of the frontier. As American Indians had not been treated in detail in previous censuses it was decided under the administration of Superintendent Robert Porter to prepare this mammoth undertaking as part of the 1890 census. Included are discussions of Indian populations by state status reports concerning life on the reservations disbursement of populations on and off reservations progress in schooling and employment and a wealth of other data. ‎Oxford: Department of War Organisation of the British Red Cross Society and Order of St. John of Jerusalem 1944. Octavo illustrated printed wrappers 16 pp. unpaginated. Some spotting otherwise a near-fine copy. A scarce copy. This prospectus was ordered by the British Red Cross and St. John War Organisation. They supplied materials and books to R.A.F. Sergeant James W. Lambert for him to design and produce the illuminated report which constitutes this booklet. In 1944 there were more than one thousand students attending lectures at the school. These 'Barbed-Wire Universities' as they were called back then were formed by the Red Cross Educational Section to provide educational facilities for flying personel interned in Germany. In 1944 three separate Air Force Camps were moved to create one large camp called Stalag Luft VI. These schools prepared the men in re-entering civilian life by enabling them to improve their qualifications and learn skills they could use after their release. The 1892 map of Tokyo provides an intricate view of the central and surrounding areas of the Tokyo metropolitan region. The map's focal point is the Royal Palace distinguished by its vivid red hue. Alongside this select military facilities also stand out in red. The map's legends unveil sections of Meiji Tokyo. Aristocrats' residences police stations and telegraph stations are marked reflecting the city's diverse functions. Shrines and temple are also indicated. Interestingly the map presents portraits of Emperor Meiji attired in Western clothing and Empress Meiji adorned in traditional kimono. These depictions flank the map's title. Accentuating the map's narrative are sixteen illustrations thoughtfully dispersed around the periphery showcasing Tokyo's key landmarks and significant structures. . 山中善三郎. ‎London 1852. Five groups of documents measuring 13 x 8 inches various paginations see full description below. Fine condition. A scarce set of primary source documents relating to the protection of British territory in the Caribbean in particular along the Mosquito Coast during the period of varied interests in the area in the period following the Anglo-Spanish agreement on the slave trade. Consisting of a series of secretarial copies of reports delivered to Peter McQuhae Commodore of H.M.S. Imauam stationed in Jamaica these dispatches offer an overview of the issues confronting the British Navy in Jamaica during the period and in the Caribbean more broadly. Most of the documents refer to issues with Cuba the most interesting perhaps being a letter warning of an impending filibustering expedition against Cuba by a pro-slavery faction in the American South. <br /> <br /> The group consists of five groups of bound documents some bound out of order and likely bound later. Contents are as follows: <br /> <br /> 1. Addington A.M. Four Page Report Concerning Placing a Ship of War at Grey Town to Discourage Invasions on the Mosquito Coast March 13 1851. <br /> <br /> Henry Addington writes McQuhae to recommend stationing a warship at Grey Town:<br /> <br /> “.it would be sufficient that a Ship of War should from time to time look in grey Town without remaining there at any time long enough to endanger the health of the crew… to provide for the case which is possiblee tho’ not at all likely that during the interval between the visits of a Ship of War some expedition of Nicaraguan or some of the North Americans returning from California might take advantage of the comparatively unprotected state of the lace to take possession of it and that the cruiser on its return to Grey Town might find the place so occupied Lord Palmerston concieves taht in such an event it would seem to be inconsistent with the Honor of this Country that a British Ship of War should acquiesce in such an aggression and it would be right that the intruder should be expelled if the Commander of the Ship of War should find as he probably would that he had the means of doing so without much difficulty and that in case he should repel the intruders and re-establish the authorities of the Mosquito Government demanding the liberation of any British or Mosquito subjects who might have been made Prisoners and holding hostages for their relief if they should have been removed up into the interior of the Country.<br /> <br /> It It is to be hoped however that all questions of dispute in regard to Grey Town will beoon be settled because Her Majesty’s government has through Her Majesty’s Minister at Washington proposed to the Government of the United States that an arrangement should be made by which the Sovereignty of Grey Town… should be transferred to the State of Costa Rica… Lord Palmerston desires me to add that there are at present at Washington a plenipotentiaries both from Nicaragua and Costa Rica for the purpose of conducting this negotiation…â€<br /> <br /> 2. Single Page Letter in Secretarial Hand Warning of Incoming Ships to Cuba Carrying Enslaved Individuals January 24 1852. <br /> <br /> Addington writes to McQuhae about two incoming vessels carrying enslaved Africans passing on information received at Rio De janeiro by another British vessel:<br /> <br /> “I am directed by Earl GraH.M. Minister at Rio reporting that he had recieved information that two Slavers had sailed from Havana to… the coast of Africa… with the intention of returning with Cargoes of slaves which are to be landed at the Entrade de Cuchillo in Cuba.â€<br /> <br /> 3. Seymour G.F. et al. Four Reports Bound Together on Varied Subjects including the Case of the Creole British Fishing Rights in Spanish Waters off of Cuba and Porto Rico and the Case of a Detained British Vessel in Cuba 1852. <br /> <br /> A series of four reports addressed to McQuhae on various subject as follows:<br /> <br /> A. Copy of a Letter in Secretarial Hand Relaying the Impending Danger of a Pro-Slavery Filibuster Mission from Florida May 17 1852. <br /> <br /> A fascinating letter relaying information received from M. Calderon de la Barca concerning an impending filibuster mission against Cuba led by a Dr. Wren part of an organization called “The Lone Star Association:â€<br /> <br /> “.it would appear that the government of the United States has also received an intimation that something of the sort is on foot for the President informed M. Calderon that orders had already been sent to the U.S. Authorities at the different Ports of the Union to be prepared to take vigorous measures for the repression of any such attempts… an expedition is in fact meditated by certain parties in the South and that it is intended that it should leave some Port of Florida. The real object of this expedition however as as I am told not Cuba… but San Domingo for the purpose of acting as auxiliaries to the Dominicans against the Haytians… it is by no means impossible that its ultimate aim would be Cuba… the persons I am given to understand engaged in the expedition are a Dr. Wren who is president of a society called “The Lone Star State Association…â€<br /> <br /> The letter is worthy of further study - we find references to a Dr. Wren in newspaper articles from the period but were unable to pinpoint his identity or the history of his organization. An article from a Loudon Tennessee newspaper describes Dr. Wren as a “representative of New Orleans societies†and described a meeting in Loudon in 1852 trying to recruit for the overthrow of the Spanish colonial government of Cuba through an invasion. unknown‎

This is one of the early books on May 1 in Turkey printed by the Turkish Revolutionary Workers' Confederation of Trade Unions. Cover art illustrated by Turkish painter Orhan Taylan, (1941-). In the Ottoman Empire, the first celebration of Labour Day was organized in Skopje in 1909. In Istanbul, Labour Day was first celebrated in 1912. No celebrations could be organized between 1928 and 1975. On 1 May 1976 the Confederation of Revolutionary Trade Unions of Turkey (DISK) organized a rally on Taksim Square with mass participation one year ago "Bloody First May" which was an attack on leftist demonstrators on 1 May 1977 (International Workers' Day) in Taksim Square, Istanbul, Turkey. This booklet was printed for the commemoration of this celebration. Orhan Taylan was born in Samsun, to an artist mother in 1941. Graduated from Robert College (1960) and the Fine Arts Academy of Rome (1965). First solo painting exhibition in 1968. Took leading positions in artists' organizations (1975-1978). Organized mural painting symposiums and executed several murals (1976-80). His paintings were exhibited in London, Amsterdam, and Moscow within Turkish Highlights exhibitions between 1988 and 1990. Aside from regular exhibitions in Istanbul and Ankara, his works were also shown in solo gallery exhibitions in Paris, New York, Geneva, and Athens. Orhan Taylan exhibits mainly figurative oil paintings, and occasionally metal sculptures and drawings. Lives and works in Istanbul. During the 1971 Military coup, taken in custody on summer midnight together with his wife and cartoonist Tan Oral. All his archives and hundreds of books destroyed. 1977 Group exhibitions in Paris and Berlin. The May 1 poster wins 1st prize in the International Poster Competition of the World Federation of Trade Unions, Prag. (Source: Turkish Painting - Visual Art Encyclopedia). This is the first appearance of this art before it's winning the prize in 1977. Rare.‎

I gave some account of this & other crafts she took up in my book on her art . Your P.S. about a bookplate by Halsey Ricardo is something I do not recall. Lytton's library was left to his brother James and to Roger Senhouse. But all his brothers & sisters died some time ago. ‎The late Patrick Eddington was a Utah artist and former high school art teacher who had as a goal the desire to create “The Cat Project†where literary and visual artists from around the world were asked to produce original works about cats which would be included in a traveling exhibition and book unfortunately never realized. Doris Lessing 1919-2013 born in what was then Persia now Iran spent her childhood years in southern Africa. The author of nearly 50 books she received the 2007 Nobel Prize in Literature becoming only the eleventh woman to receive literature’s most prestigious award in its 106-year history. Her works are often viewed as in-depth studies of twentieth-century living conditions behavioral patterns and historical progressions. Her masterwork is considered to be The Golden Notebook a postmodern feminist work published in 1962. Interestingly Lessing who was a devoted cat lover throughout her life is also the author of a book which conjures up the subtleties of feline existence On Cats. With regards to this small archive it is significant that this rather busy Nobel-Prize winning author would provide Eddington a high school art instructor and small press printer with a piece of original prose regarding cats supplied specifically for him at a relatively low cost.<br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> Included in the archive are the following:<br /> <br /> <br /> TLS. Letter 8†x 10†from Doris Lessing to Patrick Eddington sent from London and dated 17th January 1986. A letter in which Lessing discusses her feelings with regards to one of her earlier works “A Small Personal Voice.†Eddington had recommended it to a friend and Lessing claims “The trouble is I wrote some of it a long time ago and I no longer agree with a lot of it. I wonder if she would like to read something more recent I wrote and read five lectures for C.B.C. under the title of Prisons We Choose to Live Inside. This represents what I think now not what I used to think in the ‘fifties.’†Signed “Yours Doris L.†at the foot.<br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> ALS. Letter on a sheet of paper 7†x 9†written by Doris Lessing to Patrick Eddington. Not dated. In the brief letter Lessing thanks Eddington for the book by Barbara Kingsolver and writes “I am glad u sic like Brian Aldiss. He is one of my favorite people.†She closes the letter assuring Patrick that if she writes something suitable regarding the subject of cats she will remember him.<br /> <br /> <br /> TLS. Brief letter 8 ¼†x 11 ¼†from Doris Lessing sent from London and dated January 6 2000 addressed to Patrick. Lessing opens with “OK I’ve done a short piece. It is not a question of being paid but of time- am as usual in the middle of something. Important collection of anti-slavery testimonies by eminent authors. Includes facsimile signatures of most contributors which include Horace Mann William Seward Charles Sumner Annie Parker Gerrit Smith Miss C. E. Beecher and many others. <br /> <br /> Most importantly however this collection contains the only piece of fiction published by Frederick Douglass. This short story titled "The Heroic Slave" is based on an actual slave insurrection led by Madison Washington in 1841 aboard the slave ship Creole while enroute to New Orleans from Virginia. ‎Without place or date c.1843. 1p. 4to. In very good condition on lightly-aged paper. Engraved illustration of the Old House at the head signed 'S. Holden' with an engraving of the Plague-Stone beneath it followed by the text: 'The Relic represented above formed the corner coping-stone of a garden wall immediately above the spot indicated in the drawing by the letter A. It is traditional in the neighbourhood that about the middle of the 17th century probably in the year 1665 several cases of The Plague occurred in this house. All direct intercourse with the neighbours being prohibited the money paid for the provisions and other necessaries was deposited in the square dish seen in the Stone which was kept filled with vinegar and water for the purpose of disinfection. Those who died of the Pestilence are said to have received interment in a field near the house and here the remains of three bodies were discovered in the year 1843. The Stone is now in the possession of Dr. Kendrick Warrington.' A note at the foot relates to the illustration of the Old House: 'The Wash-Lane was formerly often flooded with water and it is thus represented with the stepping stones for foot passengers'. Later ink inscription on verso reading "from Holland / 1809." Minor wear and soiling. Very good. A very early engraved portrait of Sir Francis Drake.<br/> <br/> A clean impression of the second state of this famous portrait of Sir Francis Drake at age forty-three shortly after he returned from circumnavigating the globe the basis for most of the later images of him. The image is taken from a portrait purportedly painted from life by Jean Rabel the Elder and is said to be a credible likeness of the famed navigator. The legend beneath the portrait indicates the dates of Drake's circumnavigation listing Rabel as the painter and Thomas de Leu as the engraver. Thomas de Leu 1560-1612 a pupil of Rabel's moved to Paris around 1576 and became one of the most noted portrait engravers of his time. This engraving of Drake was the basis for many later images of him including the well-known engravings by Jodocus Hondius and Crispin van de Passe. A wonderful association copy ! Charles Noel Carnegie 10th Earl of Southesk JP DL 20 March 1854 – 10 November 1941 was a Scottish nobleman. Carnegie was the son of the explorer and poet James Carnegie 9th Earl of Southesk and his first wife Catherine Hamilton Noel daughter of the Charles Noel 1st Earl of Gainsborough. He had three older sisters Lady Arabella Charlotte wife of Samuel Romilly Lady Constance Mary wife of Victor Bruce 9th Earl of Elgin and Lady Beatrice Diana Cecilia Diana Cecillia wife of the Rev. Henry Holmes Stewart. After his mother's death in 1855 at the age of twenty-six his father remarried to Lady Susan Catherine Mary Murray eldest daughter of the 6th Earl of Dunmore in 1860. From his father's second marriage he had seven younger half-siblings including: Sir Lancelot Douglas Carnegie Lady Dora Susan wife of Maj. Ernest de Rodakowski-Rivers Lady Elizabeth Erica Lady Helena Mariota Lady Katherine Agnes Blanche wife of Courtenay Morgan 1st Viscount Tredegar Hon. Robert Francis who married Violet Fraser and Hon. David Wynford Carnegie. His paternal grandparents were Sir James Carnegie 5th Baronet de jure 8th Earl of Southesk and the former Charlotte Lysons a daughter of the Reverend Daniel Lysons. He was educated at Harrow and St Andrews University and would later receive an honorary degree from the university in October 1902. Amongst his various offices he was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the part-time Forfar and Kincardine Artillery Militia in 1872 and steadily progressed through the officer ranks until he became the Lieutenant-Colonel Commandant in 1894 with the honorary rank of Colonel. He retired from the command in 1906. He also served as a Deputy Lieutenant for Angus Aberdeenshire and Kincardineshire from 5 January 1900. He held the office of Justice of the Peace for Aberdeenshire and for Angus. In 1905 he succeeded his father as the 10th Earl of Southesk who had restored the family titles with the original precedence by reversal of the 1715 Act of Attainder in 1855. He had the reputation of being the best game shot in Scotland. In 1921 Kinnaird Castle which was situated in one of the grandest Scottish glens and was the seat of the Earls of Southesk for more than 600 years burnt to the ground. "Only a small part of the servant's wing has escaped. A considerable part of the library was saved but many books impossible to replace as well as Raeburn's portrait of Lady Carnegie valued at £10000 were lost." Lord Southesk rebuilt the castle. Balberyszski served on the Advisory Council of the “small ghetto†opposing Judenrat collaborationist policies. He survived both the liquidation of the ghetto and the Holocaust. <br> Balberyszski a Lithuanian-Polish Jewish politician and journalist was prewar editor at Vilna’s Der Tog and active in the Folkspartei and later the Polish Democratic Party. After the war he emigrated to Melbourne where he became a leading communal figure. "Having had a desire for some time to get away from Washington for a few days of restful diversion including some hoped for fishing in southern waters the President had previously instructed Captain Callaghan his Naval Aide to have the Potomac available at Port Everglades Florida for a projected cruise to the Bahamas." A working vacation affording the President fine fishing opportunities along the coast of Florida and the Bahamas. The President on the first day alone caught a tuna a skipjack and a mackerel. Bartos to whom the book is inscribed was an enlisted sailor attached to the President's party. Also attached to the President's party were the Attorney General Robert H. Jackson; Harold Ickes the Secretary of the Interior; and a young William J. McNamara. Included with the pamphlet are two 10" x 7½" photographs of Bartos sporting his rod and reel. Beautifully printed and bound with John Johnson's fine press work.<br> The Book of Sirach also known as The Wisdom of Jesus the Son of Sirach The Wisdom of Jesus son of Eleazar or Ecclesiasticus is a Jewish literary work originally written in Biblical Hebrew. The longest extant wisdom book from antiquity it consists of ethical teachings written by Yeshua ben Eleazar ben Sira Ben Sira a Hellenistic Jewish scribe of the Second Temple period.<br> The text was written sometime between 196 and 175 BCE and Ben Sira's grandson translated the text into Koine Greek and added a prologue sometime around 117 BCE. The prologue is generally considered to be the earliest witness to a tripartite canon of the books of the Hebrew Bible. The fact that the text and its prologue can be so precisely dated has profound implications for the development of the Hebrew Bible canon.<br> Although the Book of Sirach is not included in the Hebrew Bible and therefore not considered scripture in Judaism it is included in the Septuagint and the Old Testament of the Catholic and Orthodox churches. In the Protestant traditions historically and still in continuation today in Lutheranism and Anglicanism the Book of Sirach is an intertestamental text found in the Apocrypha though it is regarded as noncanonical.<br> This John Lane Bodley Head edition is very readable decorated beautifully and presented handsomely.<br> Violet Ella Evelyn Brunton October 1878 – 1951 also known as Victor du Lac was an English sculptor painter and illustrator. She was educated at the the Royal College of Art in London. During the 1920s Brunton contributed illustrations to a number of books including two volumes of fairy tales edited by Romer Wilson the Ecclesiasticus as presented here and a number of other works. In her oil paintings she tended towards classical and mythological subjects. She exhibited work at the Royal Academy the Royal Glasgow Institute the Royal Society of Miniature Painters to which she was elected in 1925 and elsewhere.<br> Charles Lewis Hind 1862–1927 was a British journalist writer editor art critic and art historian. He served as the deputy editor of The Art Journal 1887–92 and the Pall Mall Budget. In 1893 he co-founded The Studio: An Illustrated Magazine of Fine and Applied Art. Three years later Hind became the editor of The Academy and after it merged with Literature he continued with the editorship of The Academy and Literature retiring in 1903.
