[FRIENDS OF THE PEOPLE]
Letters &c. from friends of the people: or the last words and dying advice of a weaver to his children
Edinburgh: s.n. s.d. c.1792 16pp. Modern grey paper boards contemporary backstrip partially preserved and pasted to spine. Occasional chipping to edges scattered spotting. The sole edition of a short penny pamphlet comprised of eight 'Letters' published by the Scottish branch of the Society of the Friends of the People an organisation founded by the Whig Party in 1792 focused on advocating for parliamentary reform. Unlike the English strand of the society the Scottish branch omitted the high subscription rates that restricted membership to aristocracy. As a result the members were for the most part 'shopkeepers and artisans' with the anonymous signature of this volume being from 'a weaver to his children' highlighting the significant representation of weavers within the standing body. Despite significant local support and an official rejection of violent resistance in the name of radical Reform the majority-labourer organisation was deemed a threat by the upper-class members of the very party which instigated its founding leading to the arrest and indictment of many members for sedition after its third and final 'General Convention'. [Gandhi, Mohandas Karamchand] [Mahatma]. Edited by DG Tendulkar; M Chalapathi Rau; et al A Word for the Readers by Mohandas Gand
Gandhiji: His Life and Work. Published on His 75th Birthday.
Bombay: Keshav Bhikaji Dhawale October 2 1944. First unabridged edition of this tribute to Gandhi with introductions by Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru and a biographical essay by Albert Einstein. Quarto original publisher's half cloth patterned endpapers illustrated with black and white photographs and tipped-in color plates frontispiece. Boldly signed by Mahatma Gandhi on the half-title page. Association copy additionally signed by John Kenneth Galbraith opposite the copyright page "John Kenneth Galbraith 1987 -- Ambassador to India 1961-1963." Although he remains best known as an iconoclast in the field of economics John Kenneth Galbraith was very active in Democratic Party politics serving in the administrations of Franklin D. Roosevelt Harry S. Truman John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. During his time as an adviser to President John F. Kennedy Galbraith was appointed United States Ambassador to India from 1961 to 1963. Kennedy considered India to be important not just in its own right but also because an Indian diplomat always served as the chief commissioner of the International Control Commission ICC. Thus Galbraith came to be involved in American policy towards Southeast Asia from his perch as an ambassador in New Delhi. During his tenure in India Galbraith developed close ties with Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and engaged deeply with the political and cultural life of the country. He expressed admiration for India’s experiment in democratic socialism and non-alignment and he frequently drew comparisons between Nehru’s political legacy and that of Mahatma Gandhi. While Galbraith did not interact directly with Gandhi—who had been assassinated in 1948—he often invoked Gandhian ideals in his reflections on India’s development and its moral role in the post-colonial world. His writings and diplomatic efforts emphasized the importance of non-violence civil society and moral leadership themes closely associated with Gandhi’s philosophy. In very good condition. A wonderful association copy very rare and desirable signed by Gandhi and even more so with the addition of Galbraith's signature. Published in 1944 to both commemorate Mahatma Gandhi’s 75th birthday and support the Kasturba Gandhi National Memorial Fund Gandhiji: His Life and Work contains essays by various contemporaries examining Gandhi’s political career social reform efforts and influence on Indian society as well as a curated selection of Gandhi’s own writings including speeches and letters. Although Gandhi generally declined to participate in birthday commemorations he wrote a preface for this volume citing its charitable purpose. As a mid-career publication released during Gandhi’s lifetime the book reflects the contemporary reception of his work and offers early interpretations of his role in the Indian independence movement. "Generations to come it may be will scarce believe that such a one as this ever in flesh and blood walked upon this earth" Albert Einstein On Gandhi. Keshav Bhikaji Dhawale hardcover

Constitution of the Washington Benevolent Society of the Towns of Mayfield and Broadalbin and County of Montgomery Instituted 14th March 1811 WITH Washington's Farewell Address to the People of the United States. Published for the Washington Benevolent Society
Albany: Balance Press 1811. Good. Albany: Printed at the Balance Press No. 30 State-Street 1811. 12mo 15.5cm.; original sheep over paper-covered scale boards; 8 36pp.; engraved portrait frontispiece of George Washington commissioned for the Society. Binding quite worn with most of paper covering scale boards perished shallow losses across top edge of upper cover and bottom edge of rear cover crude tape repair to the latter dark damp staining affecting first four leaves including frontispiece and certificate; a Good copy overall of this unrecorded local chapter. <br /> <br /> Frontispiece followed by a certificate accomplished in manuscript certifying that "Caleb Ackely has been regularly admitted a Member of the 'Washington Benevolent Society of the Towns of Mayfield Broadalbin and County of Montgomery.'" The certificate is also signed by Peter Thomson Secretary and James Lord President.<br /> <br /> Chapters of the Federalist Party fraternal club the Washington Benevolent Society first starting appearing in 1808. As David Hackett Fischer describes it "A group of young men in New York City decided to found a fraternal order which would combine the mummery of the Tammany Societies the benevolent activities of the Hibernian Provident Society the partisan enthusiasm of the Young Federalists and the filiopietism of the Washington Society of Alexandria."<br /> <br /> Evidently this wild concoction worked and local branches of the Society spread throughout New York New England and westward to Pennsylvania and Ohio. One Republican complained that these societies were "sprouting up like mushrooms in the shade." At least 208 such societies have been accounted for though Fischer surmises that there were many more. <br /> <br /> This variant of a local Montgomery County chapter for the towns of Mayfield and Broadalbin not separately catalogued in OCLC as of June 2025. <br /> <br /> Reference: David Hackett Fischer "The Revolution of American Conservatism" 1965 pp. 115-6. First edition; 8vo 24.5 x 19 cm; photographic frontispiece 14 in-text photographic illustrations previous ownership inscription to front endpaper free endpapers toned otherwise clean and bright internally; vellum backed green paper boards gilt lettering to spine printed lettering to upper board touch of rubbing to boards spine a little darkened a very good copy; 4 108 1pp.<br /> First edition of the only first-hand account of the mission to Fez in 1909 to install Sir Reginald Lister as British Ambassador to Morocco following the the Hafidiya the coup d'état of 1908. <br /><br />Major-General Lord Albert Edward Wilfred Gleichen 1863-1937 was a soldier and military attaché who was related to the Saxe-Coburg's and was often in Queen Victoria's favour. He rose to the rank of General and commanded the 15th Infantry Brigade in WWI. He was less successful in the diplomatic service: he was the military attaché to Berlin between 1903 and 1906 until he fell out with Kaiser Wilhelm II and the military attaché to Washington D.C. from 1906 to 1907 during which time he failed to form a relationship with Teddy Roosevelt. His account of his trip to Fez with Sir Reginald Lister is lively and provides an account of Fez and Morocco following the ascension of Abd al-Hafid. His reign was short lived and British influence with it as Morocco became a French colony in 1912.<br /> London, Harrison & Sons, 1909. hardcover

[Gone With The Wind] Howard, Leslie (1893-1943)
LESLIE HOWARD: SIGNED ALBUM LEAF; dated Jan. 1937
N.P.: Leslie Howard 1937. original. Leaf. Fine. Off-white 4" x 6" album page signed clearly in blue fountain pen with the date of 1937 the date of the book Gone With The Wind in which he was to star. Very Scarce signature by esteemed movie actor Leslie Howard 1893-1943 during or near the time that the classic film "Gone With The Wind" was being prepared. The signature bears the surprisingly rare date of the book Gone With The Wind in "1937." Howard seldom signed autographs and his signature near the time of the film Gone With The Wind are rarities. The actor was uncomfortable with his role as Ashley Wilkes and simultaneously was shooting another film during production. Those factors plus a pronounced disinclination to sign autographs means that his signature with a 1937 date is a rarity. Nor was Howard able to retroactively autograph many pieces associated with his most famous role or others because he was killed in 1943 during World War II. Leslie Howard unknown

[Government of Canada]; The Military Service Council
For The Defence of Canada
Ottawa Ontario Canada: Government of Canada The Military Service Council October 1917. First Edition First Printing. Card Covers. pp. 31. 8vo. measuring 6" x 9". Tan twice-stapled card covers. Excepting a few unobtrusive spots to the rear cover the extremities remain remarkably well-preserved with tight sound binding. Internally the text-block is entirely without blemish with bright clean pages. Near fine. Corresponds to OCLC #798874075. Rare in commerce our offering being the only extant copy at time of cataloguing. <br/><br/>An exhortation by an unnamed writer offering a firm defence and a historical basis for the legitimacy of the Allied war effort against the Germans during the First World War. Invoking Napoleon Lincoln the founding Fathers of the United States and other historical figures and events the writer pleads for the Allies' just motivations for waging war to a war-weary Canadian public. The writer further offers justification for the continuation of the system of conscription a denunciation of those men who would invoke their "disabilities of conscience"; writing bitterly of those men "wiling to fabricate "conscientious scruples" in order to avoid service noting the "bitterness with which a man who is required to leave wife children and livelihood and does so with a quiet dignity of which I have been a respectful witness in hundreds of cases regards a conscientious objector remaining at home and enjoying the fruits of other men's sacrifices.". A remarkably well-preserved piece of First World War ephemera from a decidedly Canadian perspective. [Government of Canada] | The Military Service Council unknown
