[OTTOMAN MANUSCRIPT - OTTOMAN SYRIA - OTTOMAN LEBANON].
[OTTOMAN SYRIA - BEYRUT] [1342] February 14, 1924 A manuscript document in Arabic: From Ottoman 'mufti' in Safed to "Yüksek Islâm Meclisi Riyâseti" [i.e. The Supreme Islamic Council Presidency], on an unpaid amount of foundation deed (with 3 stamps of HJZ 'Hijaz Railways' and OPDA 'Ottoman Public Debt Administration').
Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original manuscript document sent to the Ottoman court with postal stamps "OPDA" (Ottoman Public Debt Administration) [= Osmanli Kamu Borç Idaresi] ve "HJZ" (Hejaz Railway) [= Hicaz Demiryollari]. 28x21,5 cm. In Arabic. 1 p. 11 lines. On a paper with Grifon and "W" initial and "Original" watermarks. Paper probably from a British paper manufacturer produced the paper for the Middle Eastern market. It starts with "Yüksek Islâm Meclisi Re'isi Âlîsi'ne". There is talk of a deal made by the Safed mufti and the person concerned - stating that he has been waiting for two years for an unpaid amount after an agreement with a certain amount of Egyptian junaihs, Safed mufti demands that the rest of the money. Sayyidî, who states that he is getting older and that the money must be kept in order to be able to do the title deeds from the foundations, says that otherwise the title deed procedures will not be completed. Signed by Safed mufti named Seyyidî. On the bottom, signed by/as "Reisü'l Camiü'l Islâmiü'l Âlî, Mehmed (or, Muhammed) Sehvî]. "Safed is a city in the Northern District of Israel. Located at an elevation of 900 meters (2,953 ft), Safed is the highest city in the Galilee and in Israel. Safed has been identified with Sepph, a fortified town in the Upper Galilee mentioned in the writings of the Roman Jewish historian Josephus. The Jerusalem Talmud mentions it as one of five elevated spots where fires were lit to announce the New Moon and festivals during the Second Temple period. Safed attained local prominence under the Crusaders, who built a large fortress there in 1168. It was conquered by Saladin 20 years later, and demolished by his grandnephew al-Mu'azzam Isa in 1219. After reverting to the Crusaders in a treaty in 1240, a larger fortress was erected, which was expanded and reinforced in 1268 by the Mamluk sultan Baybars, who developed Safed into a major town and the capital of a new province spanning the Galilee. After a century of general decline, the stability brought by the Ottoman conquest in 1517 ushered in nearly a century of growth and prosperity in Safed, during which time Jewish immigrants from across Europe developed the city into a center for wool and textile production and the mystical Kabbalah movement. It became known as one of the Four Holy Cities of Judaism. As the capital of the Safad Sanjak, it was the main population center of the Galilee, with large Muslim and Jewish communities.".

[OTTOMAN NAVAL FORCES COMMISSION OF ENGINES].
[OTTOMAN NAVAL FORCES / PAMPHLET FOR THE LIQUID FUEL] Yag-i mâyi' mahrûkâti ve tertîbâti. [i.e. Liquid oil fuel and its assembly]. Translated into Ottoman Turkish by Bahriye Nezâreti Çarhçi [sic. Çarkçi] Komisyonu.
Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Paperback in original wrappers. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In Ottoman script (Turkish with Arabic letters). 16 p. This pamphlet, mostly prepared in the form of questions and answers, describes the technical infrastructure required for the use of liquid oil fuel in warships. It was prepared for officers studying at the navy schools of the Imperial Ottoman in the early 20th century. On the cover, it's indicated to be translated by the Ottoman Naval Forces Commission of Engines, but, no information on which source to be used to translate it. It's printed after the Second Constitutional Regime in 1908, and Tripoli War in 1911, probably during the Balkan Wars, (1912-1913). Following the Young Turk Revolution in 1908, the Committee of Union and Progress which effectively took control of the country sought to develop a strong Ottoman naval force. The poor condition of the fleet became evident during the Ottoman Naval Parade of 1910, and the Ottoman Navy Foundation was established in order to purchase new ships through public donations. Those who made donations received different types of medals according to the size of their contributions. In 1910, the Ottoman Navy purchased two pre-dreadnought battleships from Germany: SMS Weissenburg and her sister ship SMS Kurfürst Friedrich Wilhelm. These ships were renamed Turgut Reis and Barbaros Hayreddin, respectively. The Italo-Turkish War of 1911-1912 and the Balkan Wars of 1912-1913 proved disastrous for the Ottoman Empire. In the former, the Italians occupied Ottoman Tripolitania (present-day Libya) and the Dodecanese Islands in the Aegean Sea and the Regia Marina defeated Ottoman light naval forces in the battles of Preveza, Beirut, and Kunfuda Bay. In the latter, a smaller Greek fleet successfully engaged with Ottoman battleships in the naval skirmishes of Elli and Lemnos. The better condition of the Greek fleet in the Aegean Sea during the Balkan Wars led to the liberation of all Ottoman-held Aegean islands other than those in the Italian-occupied Dodecanese. It also prevented Ottoman reinforcements and supplies to the land battles on the Balkan peninsula, where the Balkan League emerged victoriously. The only Ottoman naval successes during the Balkan Wars were the raiding actions of the light cruiser Hamidiye under the command of Rauf Orbay. For this reason, the Naval Ministry, on the one hand, tried to train a large number of sailor officers by printing technical booklets like this in order to close the gap. Faded on the cover, chipped on extremities and spine. Otherwise a good and rare copy. Not in Özege.; Only one copy in OCLC: 949520567 (Bogaziçi Uni. Library).

Tipperary 1780 an Anglican clergyman was deeply interested in Irish history and topography and in the condition both social and religious of the Irish peasantry. His various concerns found expression in his foundation of The Christian Examiner" 1825 in his collaboration with George Petrie in the excellent Dublin Penny Journal 1832 and in a series of three valuable travel books on then remote and little known areas of Ireland. Theese books "written in a kindly and cheerful s pirit with a keen appreciation of the picturesque.depict a condition of things now almost pased away" Webb's 'Dictionary of Irish Biography' 1878. In this the first and most scarce of his books which was first published in 1827 the first 185 pages deal with Donegal and the remainder with west Cork and Kerry. [Over the Garden Wall] Childe Harold [Edward Salisbury Field]
The Complete Optimist
New York: E.P. Dutton & Co 1912. First edition. 8vo unpaginated printed on both sides of unopened bifolia with illustrations and illustrated endpapers by the author. Pictorial boards backed in red cloth in the rare illustrated jacket with a different image than the boards. Light soiling to boards bottom edges worn. Jacket with some chipping but a very good copy.

An absolute gem of early 20th century humor whimsically written and illustrated by "Childe Harold" or Edward Salisbury Field 1878-1936 author playwright and employee/friend of William Randolf Hearst. His drawings such as these appeared in Hearst's newspapers under this nom de plume.

Interestingly animator and creator of the television miniseries Over the Garden Wall Patrick McHale has stated this title was a direct influence on his popular series and it tracks. The illustrations depict people and animals with big smiles and wide eyes in scenes that range from horrifying to humorously dark.

This book is surprisingly uncommon and we have never seen a copy in jacket. OCLC cites only microform holdings. . E.P. Dutton & Co unknown

[PACIFISM] [COMMITTEE ON NEW ALTERNATIVES IN THE MIDDLE EAST - CONAME]
Middle East Peace Literature Service Information Packet
Nyack NY: CONAME ca 1972. 5 manila envelopes 12"x9" with printed labels containing a total of 29 reprinted articles and 6 introductory sheets. All housed within large manila envelope 13"x9.5" labeled in manuscript. External envelope rubbed and worn with some dustsoil: Good only. Internal manila envelopes slightly rubbed with minor rust to metal closures; enclosed articles with mild foxing and browning one or two bent corners only gently rubbed: overall Very Good.

An information packet distributed by the Committee On New Alternatives in the Middle East CONAME a pacifist organization founded in 1969 by a group of Jewish-Americans among them Noam Chomsky. Their aim was to pursue peace in the Middle East by promoting peaceful dialogue in the U.S. "Founding director Allan Solomonow described it as 'a forum and a resource for peace-seeking alternatives to the currently internecine status quo; we are the gadfly to the consciences of the resigned of the apathetic of those mired in propaganda and dogma.' To that end the organization's principal work was educational: disseminating articles touring speakers and organizing Middle East delegations to mitigate "the pervasive polarization of opinion that has characterized the Middle East crisis'".

This is one of the informational packets CONAME assembled and distributed probably in 1972. It contains reprints of previously published articles dating from 1969-1972 organized in envelopes labeled as follows:

1. Who Are the Palestinians 6 articles
2. The Israeli Peace Movement 4
3. Israel's Arab Minority 5
4. Alternatives for Middle East Peace 9
5. In Search of Middle East Information 5

Article authors include Edward Said Alan Dershowitz Ahmed Khalidi Atallah Mansour M. Cherif Bassiouni Nora Levin Edward Said Shlomo Avineri Amos Kenan Siach Amnon Rubinstein Israel Shahak and Sabri Jiryis. The packets also contain copies of a few periodicals e.g. New Outlook and The Middle East News Review.

Though this example equivocates about possible resolutions to the conflict and prioritizes providing background information CONAME eventually advocated for Israeli-Palestianian dialogue and a two-state solution. The organization collaborated with other American pacifist organizations such as the Jewish Peace Fellowship War Resisters League Quaker Action Group and Women Strike for Peace. However after the founding of Breira and the Fellowship of Reconciliation CONAME's Executive Director and Assistant Director departed and the organization dissolved in 1975. See the article on CONAME on btvshalom. org the website for the Jewish Alliance for Justice & Peace.

An ephemeral and uncommon survival; we have traced no similar examples. #61845. CONAME unknown

[PANORAMIC GROUP PHOTOGRAPH - NATIONAL LEADERSHIP OF THE CPC AND PLA].
毛主席刘主席等党和国家领导人检阅北京济南部队军事训练时和受阅官兵合影. 1964年6月5日. Chairman Mao Chairman Liu and Other Party and State Leaders Review the Military Training of the Beijing-Jinan Troops - Group Photo with the Review Officers and Soldiers. 5 June 1964.
China. 1964. A long black and white photograph of the central leadership of China flanked by several hundred PLA personnel at a troop review outside Beijing. Captions in Chinese naming the first row of sitters. 30 x 260cm. Some foxing and browning visible in the background of the photograph and on the reverse overall in good condition. A dense snapshot of a critical time in China's political history. The technical feat of composing this photograph demonstrates a high level of professionalism - both on the part of the artists and subjects. All of the sitters are clearly visible with not a single face visibly blurred chopped or otherwise obscured.

Some key figures among the nearly 700 faces include Mao Zedong Liu Shaoqi Zhou Enlai Zhu De Deng Xiaoping Jiang Qing Deng Yingchao He Long Dong Biwu Peng Zhen Yang Shangkun Ulanhu Nie Rongzhen Bo Yibo and Chen Yi.

The 8th Politburo of which a core selection are shown here is renowned for its longevity and extreme dysfunction having been elected in 1956 and lasting until 1969. Under its aegis the Hundred Flowers Campaign Great Leap Forward and Cultural Revolution were all launched rendering untold carnage and death. The posed statesmanlike quality of the subjects in this carefully composed image quietly contradicts the chaos unleashed by them in reality. . unknown

[Pantomime Dame] Alwyn D Fox, actor-manager of Horsham Repertory Company, the man who discovered Michael Caine:
Pantomime Dame. Autograph Letter Signed from actor-manager Alwyn D. Fox announcing that he is ‘free for Dame for coming season pants’ and giving his credentials for playing the part.
19 April 1951. On the green letterhead ‘The Mark of a Good Production’ of ‘ALWYN D. FOX PRODUCTION AND MANAGEMENT’ 38 Sutherland Street London SW1. See Michael Caine’s affectionate account of Fox in ‘The Elephant to Hollywood’ 2010 from which the anecdote at the end of this entry is taken. 1p 4to. Addressed to ‘Dear Mr. Hindin’ signed ‘Alwyn Fox’ and headed ‘Pantomime - “Dameâ€.’ While the twenty lines of text are clear and complete the item is not in the best of condition on aged and creased on discoloured paper with closed tears to edges. The letter begins: ‘I am at present free for Dame for coming season pants. and would be glad to negotiate with you. You contacted me last season but I had just fixed if you recall.’ He explains that the previous year he ‘did “Riding Hood†for Barrie Baldrick at New Cross Empire’ and gives details of four similar engagements in recent years including ‘ “Cinders Emp. Middlebro’ - Jimmie James’. He has a ‘very complete and elaborate wardrobe for any subject and all own props’ and ‘Can produce/manage if required. Terms £25.’ He is enclosing ‘last years folder and some photos’ not present. After becoming a movie star Caine lost touch with Fox ‘although years later when I was in Beverly Hills I got a letter from a social worker in Hammersmith London. He said he had an old man called Alwyn D. Fox lying destitute in one of his wards. Mr Fox he said was claiming he had discovered Michael Caine. In all likelihood it was fantasy but if there was any truth in it would I mind writing Mr Fox a letter and perhaps sending a small amount of money to make his last few weeks a bit easier I wrote at once to confirm Alwyn’s story and enclosed a cheque for five thousand dollars. Two weeks later I had another letter from the social worker returning the cheque. Alwyn had been delighted to get my letter he wrote and had spent the day he received it showing it to everyone on the ward. He had died later that night.’ 19 April 1951. On the green letterhead (‘The Mark of a Good Production’) of ‘ALWYN D. FOX | PRODUCTION AND MANAGEMENT’, unknown

Black Sun. The Brief Transit and Violent Eclipse of Harry Crosby.

New York:: Random House 1976. First Printing of the First Edition. A Fine copy in a Near Fine price-clipped dust jacket. Crosby was an American heir bon vivant poet and an exemplar of the Lost Generation in American literature. During World War I he served as a volunteer ambulance driver. On November 22 1917 a German shell seriously wounded a man standing next to Crosby. As Crosby drove several wounded soldiers to a medical aid station his ambulance was destroyed by artillery fire. Miraculously Crosby was unhurt. He declared later that that was the night he changed from a boy to a man. After the war Crosby abandoned all pretence of living the expected life of a privileged Bostonian. Instead he moved to Paris with his wife and together they devoted themselves to art and poetry. Together they founded the Black Sun Press and published many important writers and poets in Paris. But because of his near death experience during the war Harry had a deep obsession with death until on December 10 1929 he and one of his many female intimates committed suicide. Some Crosby scholars maintain that Harry shot Josephine and several hours later shot himself. Others suggest that Josephine shot herself first leaving Crosby little choice but to follow suit.
Random House, hardcover
