Recorded 22 April 1706. One page cr 8vo bifolium bottom edge trimmed with some small loss of text aged a bit battered but except very bottom text complete and clear. See Image. Signed boldly by Henry Cartwright presumably a Teller with two other signatories J Miller and another. Text: " Received the 22 Aprill 1706 of the Lord Fitzhardinge and of the Tellers of the Receipt of her Majesties Exchequer Six Thousand Nine Hundere Thirty one pounds in part of an Order for £10000 dated the 30th day of March 1706 for the Service of Her Majesty ". Purpose of money not yet known but the number 6931 appears on the verso with the date. Presumably the Henry Cartwright who became Receiver General of Stamp Duties dying in 1736. Bearsville NY: Retort Press 1950. Very good overall. First edition of this noted "anthology of the Prison Writings of Conscientious Objectors to World War II" front flap inscribed by one of its contributors legendary activist and pacifist James Peck. Peck devoted himself to nonviolent resistance and in addition to serving three years at Danbury for refusing to serve during the war he fought for decades for labor peace and civil rights and was arrested dozens of times during his life. Indeed he was a prominent figure in the 1970s prison reform movement in no small measure because of his numerous incarcerations whose earliest experiences are detailed here. Includes a lengthy jacket blurb by Aldous Huxley Bromer B75 as well as striking illustrations by Lowell Naeve. Uncommon complete and in collectible condition - and scarce when inscribed by a contributor. 9'' x 6''. Stiff printed pictorial wrappers in original dustjacket. One of 2000 copies "entirely hand-set hand-bound and printed on a footpedal press by the editors." Inscribed in pencil by contributor James Peck to verso of front endpaper: "Mildred - You said you wanted to read what I wrote about the jig. Well here is some of it and some of what others wrote. It gives you the feel of jailhouse sic. I think the book will interest you. I think they did a groovy job on the cover. -Jim." Jacket lightly rubbed with some chipping esp. to lower spine. Capitol Riots and Buckshot War Report of the Committee Appointed to Enquire Into the Causes of the Disturbances at the Seat of Government in December 1838
<p>Harrisburg: Boas & Coplan 1839. 163 1 pages. Five folding tables. Bound into a plain 20th century binding with a green cloth spine and chipboard covers. Edges of covers with some loss or wear; all within Very Good.</p> <p>The contentious election of 1838 in Pennsylvania resulted in Whig and the Democratic parties each claiming sole control of the House of Representatives. A mob formed upon the Pennsylvania State Capitol the legislature dispersed business shut down. Even with the threat of violence President Van Buren refused Governor Ritner’s request for Federal troops. Instead Ritner called out the Pennsylvania Militia providing them with thirteen rounds of buckshot cartridges hence the “Buckshot†War. [People's Revolt to Overthrow the Banking Establishment]

Culver City CA: Probe 1970. A very curious underground publication targeting the banking establishment as the "NO. 1 ENEMY of the working classes." Although leftist in orientation its coverage of usury "international bankers" the Federal Reserve including a profile on its former chairman Eugene Meyer and the banking system in general is uncomfortably similar to many anti-Semitic publications on the far right. Reprinted in full is "The Temple of the Thirteen Suns" a fable read to the House Banking and Currency Committee of Congress in 1935 by Robert Hemphill and later re-printed by neo-Nazi George P. Dietz for his Liberty Bell Publications. There are adverts for PROBE reprints of anti-Semitic works such as Sy Foster's Ten Letters from an International Banker to His Son and Charles Lindbergh Sr.'s isolationist classic Why Is Your Country at War which blamed industrialists and bankers for America's entry into WWI. We find no evidence that PROBE editions of these books were ever published.<br /> <br /> We were unable to find any information about this publication or the purported organization who published it. The few institutions holding this inaugural issue hold no others leading us to assume that this was the sole issue. The sentiments and ideological hybridity expressed are redolent of those advanced by Lyndon LaRouche's National Caucus of Labor Committees NCLC and based on the collection we acquired this with we assume PROBE to be a NCLC front group - of which there was no shortage. Only the second copy we've handled <br /> <br /> Tabloid format printed in black on higher quality paper we've also handled a newsprint variant 8 p. illus. Folded; faint ‘Wilcox Collection' stamp to the top of the front cover. We find four institutional holdings in OCLC Northwestern Wisconsin Historical Society Kansas & Univ. of CT. with one other copy in the Winston Papers at UMass. Absent from California institutions. [Percy Bysshe Shelley; George Romney] William Salt Brassington, archaeologist and librarian of the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre,
Percy Bysshe Shelley: supposed portrait by George Romney. Five Autograph Letters Signed from William Salt Brassington Librarian of the Shakespeare Memorial to the donor of the picture Evan Marlett Boddy.
Three of the five from 1900 28 and 31 August and 4 September; and two from 1901 5 and 13 December. All on letterheads of the Shakespeare Memorial Stratford-upon-Avon. These five items are part of a collection of correspondence the rest is offered separately relating to a supposed portrait of a young Percy Bysshe Shelley by George Romney which was in a group of paintings donated to the Shakespeare Memorial Association by the appropriately-named anatomist Evan Marlett Boddy. The Shelley portrait is reproduced in ‘The Magazine of Art’ 1901 with the caption ‘Reputed portrait of Shelley as a boy by Romney. In the Shakespeare memorial Stratford-on-Avon.’ in an article on ‘Portraits of Shelley at the National Portrait Gallery’ p. 494. The Shakespeare Memorial Theatre was founded through the efforts of local brewer Charles Edward Flower 1830-1892 after whose death its management was taken over by his brother Edgar Flower 1833-1903 also Chairman of the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust. On Edgar’s death these duties fell to his son Archibald Flower 1865-1950 several times mayor of Stratford-upon-Avon. Between 1899 and 1901 Boddy donated at least twelve portraits to be hung in the Shakespeare Memorial reading room from the correspondence wood carvings also appear to have been donated. Details of the first seven portraits including the supposed Romney one of Shelley are contained in a letter in the separate collection of correspondence of 11 December 1899 from Boddy to the Shakespeare Memorial librarian the archaeologist William Salt Brassington 1859-1939. The paintings included supposed works by Henry Fuseli ‘The Fuseli Macbeth’ and Sir Peter Lely Nell Gwynne Henry Wyatt Coleridge one of Alexander Pope ‘attributed to Hogarth’ as well as a ‘Garrick portrait’ one of Nell Gwynne and a ‘Spanish Lady’. In 1916 Boddy demanded their return on discovering that the Archibald Flower had broken the condition that Boddy had arranged in 1900 with the then librarian W. S. Brassington: ‘The Portraits were to be hung together and remain so.’ The present five items comprise four in 12mo totaling 8pp; and one the first in 4to 1p the first part of which is typed and the latter part in autograph. All signed ‘W. S. Brassington’. All in good condition lightly aged. In the first letter 28 August 1900 he writes: ‘Dear Dr. Boddy / Following the investigations respecting the portrait of Shelley I find that the description on the frame of the picture is not quite correct. / “Percy Bysshe Shelley aged 13 by G. Romney.†Shelley was born in 1792 and in 1805 he was 13 years old. Romney died in 1802 and did not paint much for some years before his death. From a careful examination of the portrait it appears to me that the subject is a boy of about 8 or 9 years of age and consequently the portrait may have been painted by Romney in or about the year 1800. Next month I hope to meet Dr. Garnett Richard Garnett 1835-1906 at the meeting of the Library Association at Bristol and hear what he has to say on the subject; He is the greatest living authority on Shelley. I am also writing to the author of a new life of Romney and hope to find a record of the sittings in Romney’s notes.’ In the second letter 31 August 1900 he recaps the position adding: ‘The more I see of the picture the more I like it: it is beautiful and to me more interesting than any of the others: it would be a treasure for any gallery.’ In the third letter 4 September 1900 he comments on a photograph of the Shelley portrait presumably for the ‘Magazine of Art’ article which he considers excellent. On 5 December 1901 Brassington writes: ‘Since last I had the pleasure of seeing you Miss Florence May has been hunting up the bust of Shelley which Mrs Leigh Hunt made & gave to Thomas Carlyle. It has now been found in Scotland and the owner has kindly sent me for the Memorial an etching made from the bust by W. Bell-Scott. It appears that the present representatives of the Shelley family do not like the bust though it undoubtedly is a likeness and it has a resemblance to the Romney portrait which renders it all the more interesting to me.’ In the last of the five letters 13 December 1901 he write: ‘It is quite time as you say that misfortunes attend some poor souls even after death but I fancy the poor departed generally score in the end if they deserve to do so. In Shelley’s case this must be so & it is a score that his portrait should be here. I shall do my best to get the Leigh Hunt Bust placed beside the Romney Portrait before next April.’ There is a final reference to his ‘young friend Nupean’. [Petroleum - Mexico] The Foundation Company
Collection of Photographs and Materials Relating to the Foundation Company's Operations in Tampico Mexico 1915-1922
Mexico 1922. Various sizes and formats generally preserved in excellent condition. Near Fine. Founded in 1902 the Foundation Company was a subaqueous concrete construction firm based in New York City. According to the Smithsonian the company was “a leader in the development of the pneumatic caisson method for the construction of foundations†— this method was used to build the skyscrapers of New York City and applied to many other types of construction projects as well. The Foundation Company archive consists of photographs blueprints correspondences and business documents relating to construction work that the company undertook in Tampico Mexico between 1915-1922. Tampico was the center of the Mexican oil boom that began at the beginning of the century. The foreign oil industry’s role in this boom was a key issue in the Mexican revolution that spanned roughly 1910-1920. <br /> <br /> After an American drilled the first oil well in Tampico in 1901 foreign companies descended into the town and took full advantage of the oil boom. The large amounts of oil in the region paired with the demand created by the allies in World War I — the United States and British Navies had converted from coal to oil — contributed to the rapid growth of the industry. According to historian Jonathan Brown “A booming foreign market and anemic domestic consumption of Mexican oil production gave many advantages to the foreign oilmen. They proceeded to create an Anglo-American capitalist haven out of the Huasteca.†The Foundation Company contracted with some of the most prominent oil companies in Tampico: El Aguila La Corona and the Transcontinental Petroleum Company. These companies were British Dutch and American. Foreign companies were attracted to Mexico because of the abundance of oil as well as the loose regulations: “At a time when the federal and state authorities in the United States were tightening the regulation of business and busting the trusts the expatriot American oilmen viewed Mexico as the new frontier of deregulation.†<br /> <br /> One reason that the Mexican government did not tighten regulations was because of the politics of the revolution. The competing factions of the revolution took advantage of the success of the oil industry — the only sector of the economy that continued to grow during that time — through taxes and forced loans. “Those who fought for political power and there were many sought to deny the federal authorities control of the oil fields. The result was a buildup of government resentment toward the freewheeling powerful foreign interests threats of drastic action against the oil companies but little governmental influence on how the nation's oil business was being conducted.†In this way the oil industry financed the revolution and also catalyzed increased economic nationalism. “Economic nationalism in Mexico had a social base and that is why the social revolution of 1910 to 1920 also produced an economic nationalism bent on reducing the power of the foreign oil companies.†The Mexican revolution produced the 1917 constitution still in place today which changed the rules for foreign businesses operating in Mexico. After years of companies resisting these regulations in 1938 President Lazaro Cardenas expropriated the foreign owned oil industry.<br /> <br /> The bulk of the documents in this archive are from 1921 and 1922 towards the end of the revolution. The documents are all written in English demonstrating the extent to which foreign companies were able to operate on their own terms despite their projects being in Mexico. The photographs and documents show the flurry of projects that the company quickly acquired in Tampico. In 1921 the Industrial Development and Manufacturers Record reported that “more big construction contracts are being carried out in the Tampico region at this time than ever before in the history of the oil industry in Mexico.†Indeed only a few months after beginning work in Mexico in 1921 the Foundation Company had 4000 men on payroll and 12 projects. These projects included a 30000-barrel refinery and 120 kilometer pipeline for the Corona Petroleum Co. and a 5 story office building for the Transcontinental Petroleum Co. The documents in this archive do not reference the revolution but they do demonstrate the rapid growth and resulting power that foreign businesses in Tampico enjoyed.<br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> Inventory <br /> <br /> 25 photographs 8x10 inches April 19- Sept 30 1921. 12 undated. One cardboard pouch containing 5 photo negatives; pouch is 5 x 7 inches negatives are 3.5 x 5.5 inches.<br /> <br /> Most of the photographs are of construction sites and the company has used a placard to write the name of the contracting company the project type their own company name and the date. These signs show that the Foundation Company was working on an Oil Storage Tank Farm and a Bulkhead for El Aguila; and a pipeline super pumps “boilers valley†and pump house for La Corona. <br /> <br /> Two letters 8.5 x 11 inches 1921-1922. <br /> <br /> Dec 3 1921 letter is addressed to Grant Huntly and contains a list of materials required for the wall size used in the Transcontinental Building. July 12 1922 letter is from Edward Swann DA of County New York saying that Grant Huntley does not have a criminal record in the last 5 years. Addressed to Hon. Ernesto C. Perez Argentine Consul-General at a New York City address. Grant Huntley was an engineer at the Foundation Company.<br /> <br /> 5 documents relating to business operations 1915-1921. Ranging in size from 6.5x 8.5- 11x17 inches.<br /> <br /> These inventories spreadsheets and progress reports reference a bag loading plan in Richmond VA; a La Corona Warehouse at Panuco Valley Terminal; and the cost data of the Transcontinental Petroleum Company’s Office Building.<br /> <br /> 5 blueprints March - August 1921. One undated. Blueprints are all different sizes ranging from 16.5x27 - 30.5x41 inches.<br /> <br /> Blueprints depict plans for: an Oil Barge; a Pile Driver to be used at Aguila’s Bulkhead; a 64000 bbl tank; the Richmond VA Bag Loading Plant. unknown

Also included is a 4p leaflet with a drop-head title 'Proceedings of the Philanthropic Society relative to Mr. Robert Young'. The Philanthropic Society was set up in 1788 seemingly at the house of Robert Young. It would "seek out in the 'Augean stable of filth disease and iniquity which disgraces the Metropolis' and train-up to 'virtue and usefulness in life the children of vagrants and such who are in the paths of vice and infamy'" Whitten 'Protection Prevention Reformation: a history of the Philanthropic Society 1788-1848' page 22. However it seems that Young who also started a variety of other schemes 'mishandled' the funds raised possibly diverting the money into other schemes and by 1790 had been dismissed from the Society. The second leaflet relates to the accounts of the Society and Mr. Young's expenses and the charges of financial impropriety against him. <p>This delightful pictorial map focusing on the North Pacific Ocean was distributed as a premium in connection with the syndicated radio program "Air Adventures of Jimmie Allen." The program featuring Jimmie Allen as an adventurous 16-year old pilot ran from 1933 to 1937 and from 1946 to 1947 and was sponsored initially by the Skelly Oil Company.</p><p>Background on the show appears on the Radio Days Theater of the Mind Museum website http://radiodaysmuseum.org<strong>:</strong></p><p><strong>"Broadcast History:</strong> 1933 to 1937 and 1946 to 1947.</p><p>The writers of Jimmie Allen had been flying aces in World War I. They came up with the idea of a show about a boy pilot while at a party in Kansas City and used their experience as pilots to create and write the show.</p><p>The show was one of the first to capitalize on the idea of a club as a promotional tool. To join the Jimmie Allen Flying Club all a child had to do was apply at any Skelly Gas Station the initial sponsor. As a member the child received a whole host of goodies ranging from a set of wings through to a "personal" letter from Jimmie himself. An incredible 600000 club newspapers were sent out to children each week and many thousands attended the Jimmie Allen Air Races that were held in Midwest cities.</p><p>The show was first broadcast between 1933 and 1937 and then came back to the air with brand new stories after the war between 1946 and 1947. Contemporary full vellum sides stamped in gilt with the coat of arms of the city of Amsterdam framed within gilt fillets spine with raised bands gilt rules and red morocco label sprinkled edges evidence of old ties now wanting. Titles printed in black and red. Text in Latin Greek and some Arabic. 3 engraved title vignettes botanical engravings head- and tail-pieces decorative initials. Some light mellowing to vellum a few scuffs to boards contents clean and crisp an excellent copy. Claude Saumaise 15 April 1588 – 3 September 1653 also known by the Latin name Claudius Salmasius was a French classical scholar. The "Pliniane exercitationes" is his most famous work in which the author through the commentary on the work of Solinus Polyhistor known by the title "Collectanea rerum memorabilium" studies its derivation from Pliny the Elder's Historia Naturalis. Solinus taking up the works of Pliny Pomponius Mela Suetonius and Terentius Varro describes the strangest and most wonderful things inherent in peoples customs animals and plants illustrating them within a geographical framework. Mommsen has theorized that Solinus's work may have transmitted passages from Latin authors completely unknown to us. Solinus's work in addition to Roman history contains the description of part of Africa Asia Minor Arabia India and the Parthian Empire. Saumaise's commentary is considered the most important commentary on the "Collectanea rerum memorabilium." The third volume entitled "Exercitationes de Homonymis Hyles Iatricae" deals with the botanical nomenclature of medicinal plants with an essay dedicated to the identification and etymology of manna and saccarum. Salmasius learned Arabic to qualify himself for the botanical part of his task. 'In 1629 Salmasius produced his magnum opus as a critic his commentary on Solinus's Polyhistor also known as De mirabilibus mundi or rather on Pliny to whom Solinus is indebted for the most important part of his work. Greatly as this commentary may have been overrated by his contemporaries it is a monument of learning and industry. Salmasius learned Arabic to qualify himself for the botanical part of his task. After declining overtures from Oxford Padua and Bologna in 1631 he accepted the professorship formerly held by Joseph Scaliger at Leiden.As a commentator and verbal critic Salmasius is entitled to very high rank. His notes on the Augustan History and Solinus display not only massive erudition but massive good sense as well; his perception of the meaning of his author is commonly very acute and his corrections of the text are frequently highly felicitous. His manly independence was shown in many circumstances and the bias of his mind was liberal and sensible. IMPORTANT EARLY ISSUE OF THE GREAT TRANSLATION OF PLINY INTO ENGLISH BY PHILEMON HOLLAND. The second printing of the first full English translation of this important book. First published in Venice in 1469 “The ‘Natural History†of Pliny the Elder is more than a natural history: it is an encyclopaedia of all the knowledge of the ancient world. .He was a compiler rather than an original thinker and the importance of this book depends more on his exhaustive reading he quotes over four hundred authorities Greek and Latin than on his original work. All the spare time allowed him by a busy administrative career was devoted to reading; he began long before daybreak his nephew the younger Pliny recorded and grudged every minute not spent in study; no book was so bad he used to say as not to contain something of value. When he died the 'Natural History' the sole extant work out of one hundred and two volumes from his pen was still incomplete. It comprises thirty-seven books dealing with mathematics and physics geography and astronomy medicine and zoology anthropology and physiology philosophy and history agriculture and mineralogy the arts and letters. He is scrupulous in his acknowledgment of his sources you must he wrote with honest humility declare those from whom you have profited and the whole of the first book is devoted to the tables of contents and authorities which bear witness to his method.<br> The HISTORIE soon became a standard book of reference: abstracts and abridgments appeared by the third century. Bede owned a copy Alcuin sent the early books to Charlemagne and Dicuil the Irish geographer quotes him in the ninth century. It was the basis of Isidorets Etymologiae and such medieval encyclopedias as the Speculum Majus of Vincent of Beauvais and the Catholicon of Balbus. One of the earliest books to be printed at Venice the center from which so much of classical literature was first dispensed it was later translated into English by Philemon Holland in 1601 and twice reprinted a notable achievement for so vast a text. .<br> More recently scholars as various as Humboldt and Grimm have praised and acknowledged their debt to it. Over and over again it will be found that the source of some ancient piece of knowledge is Pliny. PMM<br> The standard of reference for scholars since the 15th century Holland’s translation made it available to the English speaking world for the first time. Although not strictly scientific itself mingling a good deal of the author's fancy with fact Pliny's NATURALL HISTORIE was important in stimulating scientific thought in succeeding generations. "It is an encyclopedia of all the knowledge of the ancient world set out in an orderly fashion. It was the source of much medieval knowldege--and legend--and the model for such works as the SPECULUM MAJUS of Vincent of Beauvais. The high regard in which it was held in the world of the Renaissance can be seen by its early appearance in print 1472" PMM.<br> The HISTORIE divided into 37 libri or "books" was completed except for finishing touches in 77 CE. In the preface dedicated to Titus who became emperor shortly before Pliny's death Pliny justified the title and explained his purpose on utilitarian grounds as the study of "the nature of things that is life" "Preface" 13. Heretofore he continued no one had attempted to bring together the older scattered material that belonged to "encyclic culture" <br>egkyklios paideia the origin of the word encyclopaedia. Disdaining high literary style and political mythology Pliny adopted a plain style--but one with an unusually rich vocabulary--as best suited to his purpose. A novel feature of the NATURALL HISTORIE is the care taken by Pliny in naming his sources more than 100 of which ae authors and sometimes the titles of the books many of which are now lost from which Pliny derived his material.<br> The HISTORIE properly begins with Book II which is devoted to cosmology and astronomy. Here as elsewhere Pliny demonstrated the extent of his reading especially of Greek texts.<br> Books VII through XI treat zoology beginning with humans VII then mammals and reptiles VIII fishes and other marine aninmals IX birds X and insects XI. In Books XII throuogh XIX on botany Pliny came closest to making great contributions to science. He drew heavily upon Theophrastus and still made important independent observations particularly those made during his travels in Germany. Pliny is one of the chief sources of modern lknowledge of Roman gardens early botanical writings and the introduction into Italy of new horticultural and agricultural discoveries.<br> Born at Como in 23 Pliny died while observing the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 A.D. His NATURALIS HISTORIA is a scientific encyclopedia often uncritical but very elaborate and of great value. Pliny attached to each book the list of his authorities 146 Roman and 327 Greek being quoted. He explained that people may be living at the antipodes and stated that the speed of light is greater than that of sound. His work includes the oldest account of ancient art. In addition it contains a remarkable amount of early information on Asia and Africa. Its influence throughout the Middle Ages was very great.<br> This is an especially nice copy of the second offering of the work in English. This issue corrected the many errors of the first English edition. As with the copy listed in the British Museum the first tome has a new title page dated 1635. Light sun-tanning to spine; else very good or better in very good dust jacket. Scarce third book of poems by this Silesian poet who became famous for defending the rights of speakers of the so-called Lach dialects a group of dialects situated between the Czech and Polish languages. Although Åysohorsky grew up speaking German and initially published in German he later refused to write in standard Czech publishing numerous works in Lachian. A scholar of Slavic studies he systematized the grammar of Lachian and created the first published works using this dialect. Claiming persecution by Czech authorities who refused to recognize Lachian as an independent language he later asked Stalin to intercede on his behalf. He spent time in the Soviet Union and Boris Pasternak even translated several volumes of his poetry. Because of his controversial status in Czechoslovakia his books were later banned and removed from libraries and the book trade. Nevertheless because he was a poet of the oppressed and of the working class Åysohorsky found acclaim with the Czechoslovak interwar leftist literary and artistic scene. This book also serves as an introduction to the Lach dialect with a long dictionary and introduction to pronunciation and a note that the orthography and grammar is based on an 1898 work by Jan LoriÅ¡. Binding by FrantiÅ¡ek Muzika typographic design and wrappers by Ladislav Sutnar. A fine fresh copy highly uncommon in this condition slight and very small split to the paper at the bottom of the front join of the pastedown to the free-fly. The box with light wear only. VERY HANDSOME ISSUE OF THE POGANY ILLUSTRATED RUBAIYAT. An exquisite volume in a beautiful publisher’s gift binding. Based on Fitzgerald’s translation Pogany has filled each page with decorative Islamic style borders and decorations accompanied by 16 full page tipped-in color plates. Issued by the Political Training Department of the Military Affairs Commission a head portrait of Chiang Kai-shek in military uniform is featured at the top of the poster. A large blank section in main body of the poster has been left for the addition of text or images. Traditional Chinese lower section. <br> <br>Some light creasing mainly upper section light wear edges some staining upper and lower sections of sheet but overall very good. Text in traditional Chinese. Sheet measures 77.1 x 27.3cm. 軍事委員會政治訓練部 "The Political Training Department of the Military Affairs Commission" a very short-lived yet powerful department was established in March 1926 by 2nd Central Executive Committee of Kuomintang KMT. In the meantime the《军事委员会政治训练部组织大纲》"Organisation Outline for the Political Training Department of the Military Affairs Commission" stated that the department was not only in charge of overseeing the party political and cultural affairs within the National Revolutionary Army NRA but also responsible for political appointments. Issued by the Political Training Department of the Military Affairs Commission party emblem "Blue Sky with a White Sun" of the Kuomintang at upper edge text in Traditional Chinese. Some light creasing a little offsetting of ink at margins very good. Text in traditional Chinese. Sheet measures 78.6 x 27.3cm. The reference to Sun's Army in the title of this poster refers to the army of Chinese warlord 孙传芳 Sun Chuanfang whose strong military presence was felt in Zhejiang Jiangsu Anhui Fujian and Jiangxi in the years between 1922 and 1926. Sun together with other major warlords 冯国璋 Feng Guozhang 曹锟 Cao Kun 吴佩孚 Wu Peifu and 齐燮元 Qi Xieyuan were part of the Zhili Clique. Sun had been Chiang Kai-shek’s second military target when the National Revolutionary Army NRA took over Hunan from Wu Peifu’s control. The official confrontation between the NRA and Sun's army began in August 1926 in Jiangxi Province later another battlefield opened between them in Fujian Province in September of the same year. The wars between Sun's Army and NRA lasted until April 1928 when Sun faced complete defeat. <br> <br>The text on this poster reads "Welcome the Returning Triumphant Troops Who Crushed Sun's Army." The text suggests that the poster was probably issued after Sun's defeat in 1928. However 國民政府軍事委員會政治訓練部 "Political Training Department Military Affairs Commission of the Nationalist Government" only existed for only three months between March - June 1926. Possible explanations for the contradictory dates are that the slogans were published prior to the defeat in an effort to wish military success against Sun; or possibly given the chaotic situation in China at the time the publication details were not updated to reflect the new agency in charge. . 國民政府軍事委員會政治訓練部. Chiang Kai-shek 谭延闿 Tan Yankai and 7 other KMT party leaders presented "Resolutions on the Rectification of Party Affairs" to the 2nd KMT National Congress in May 1926 with the aim of purging communists and pro-communist left wing members from the KMT. <br> <br>軍事委員會政治訓練部 "The Political Training Department of the Military Affairs Commission" a very short-lived yet powerful department was established in March 1926 by 2nd Central Executive Committee of the KMT. In addition to the usual concerns of the U.D.C. funding for monuments care of veterans publication of the "Confederate Veteran" etc. this report discusses the organization's efforts to aid U.S. servicemen during World War I including the endowment of hospital beds in France. Charleston native Mary Barnett Poppenheim 1866-1936 was president of the U.D.C. from 1917 to 1919. She and her sister Louisa "helped bring the burgeoning womens club movement to Charleston as founding members and officers of the Century Club the Civic Club the Intercollegiate Club and the Charleston City Federation of Clubs . . . Mary focused on the U.D.C. She was president of the South Carolina division and then president-general of the national organization . . . Mary was most interested in preserving history and was one of the editors of the first two volumes of 'South Carolina Women in the Confederacy' a collection of personal reminiscences published by the state U.D.C. in 1903 and 1907. She also led South Carolinas fund-raising efforts for a U.D.C. monument at Shiloh.
