Boston: Printed by J. Howe No. 39 Merchants Row.Engraved by N. Dearborn.Entered according to Act of Congress by J. Greenleaf 1840. Broadside 21.25 x 29 inches printed in eight columns with eight mounted intaglio portraits each 3.5 x 3 inches all text and portraits within an elaborate ornamental border. Moderate foxing edge wear and scuffing. A few closed edge tears a couple just touching text minor scuffing to left edge of one portrait long vertical crease affecting one portrait. Overall good condition. A handsome large-format pictorial broadside featuring steel-engraved portraits and biographical passages of the first eight Presidents of the United States. Each of the eight columns of biographies is headed by a mounted portrait featuring Presidents Washington Adams Jefferson Madison Monroe John Quincy Adams Jackson and Van Buren. This is the first edition of this marvelous display broadside produced by Greenleaf who issued four updated versions in 1844 1846 1849 and 1850. The portraits were produced by noted Boston engraver Nathaniel Dearborn who executed the portraits on steel a laborious and expensive process at the time. Usually for works of this type publishers and engravers would have used much cheaper woodblock engravings but the use of steel here resulted in sharper and more lifelike images which the publisher here touts as "the highest style of the art."<br /> <br /> In his study of presidential portraiture Popular Images of the Presidency From Washington to Lincoln Noble Cunningham provides excellent background on patriotic broadsides of this type: "Popular prints offering portraits of all the presidents in a grand design on a single sheet not only celebrated the presidency but also subordinated individual presidents to the institution.the presidency emerged as the central unifying agent and the foremost symbol of the American republic. Mass-produced prints played an important role in reinforcing public perceptions of the president as the center of the Union and its preserver."<br /> <br /> All versions of Greenleaf's presidential broadside are rare with OCLC reporting just a single institutional copy of the present first edition at AAS. One of 150 copies that were printed at the Press of the Golden Key as a keepsake for a joint meeting of the Roxburghe and Zamorano Clubs in October 1990. Padre Francisco Palou 1721T-1789 a Franciscan priest missionary and close colleague and friend of Fr. Junipero Serra is called by some 'the father of California history because of the depth and breadth of the primary sources that he gathered and reproduced in Noticias. His work was done between 1767 - 1784 and published in four volumes. This leaf is from a later compilation of Palou's research that was included in the massive Documentos Para la Historia de Mexico published between 1853-1857. Bound in light tan paper covers with a silver wood engraving of Palou by Rik Olson on the front cover. Text pages are clean and bright with the book title and the commentary title in red. In addition to the leaf there is a facsimile of the original half-title page. In fine condition. Measures 7.25 x 10.75 inches. Unpaginated about five pages. PRI/052224. Knollys to tell My Dighton that H.R.H. thinks the likeness of the King of the Belgians would be much improved if he could make the nose a little longer and the beard a little darker -- The portrait shall therefore remain in Sir W. Knollys's room should nr Dighton wish to take it away with the view of making the improvements which the Prince has suggested." Owner's name stamp inside each volume. Tiny closed tear in front endpaper of volume 1. Inch-long puncture in spine of volume 2 not affecting the integrity of the binding. Back cover of volume 2 is vertically creased; milder crease in front cover of volume 4. Air bubbles under cloth on volume 3 which also has a small ink drip stain on the spine. Small nick in cloth on edge of volume 4's front cover. A few of the folding maps have closed tears but most are totally intact. Text unmarked and binding tight across the set. Very good condition overall. An important contemporary account of the American Civil War by a prince of the deposed House of Orleans a grandson of Louise Philippe of France. Philippe le Comte de Paris came to the United States to volunteer for the Union Army in 1861 where he served on the staff of General McClellan until July 1862. He later returned to Europe where he was floated as a potential candidate for restoration of the monarchy in France. However he spent much of his later life in exile in the United Kingdom. This four-volume history is complete with numerous folding maps of Civil War battlefields and forts. This edition published across 1875-1888. Porter & Coates hardcover

The idea that constitutional government not only would solve political problems, but would alsa be a magical spur to economic prosperity, was not an unusual one for this period. Same of the New Ottomans espoused it. At almost exactly the same time as Halil Serif wrote his memorandum, Mustafa Fazil Pasa published his famous Letter Addressed to Sultan Abdülaziz; this letter also proposed a constitution, as a solution t o the Ottoman Empire's domestic economic, social, and political problems. A constitution, said Mustafa Fazil, would bring liberty, resare individual initiative, aid in cultural development and improve the economy". The political system of France, England, and Belgium and the economic development of those same countries impressed a nll.Ilfber of Ottomans. The Book Of Psalms Translated Out Of The Original Tongues & with the former translations diligently compared & revised
New York: American Bible Society 1867. 3/4 cloth. Very Good . 12 1/2 x 15 1/2 inches. Folio. 1 872 974 leaves. Printed in raised letters for the blind. Tears to upper margin of front endpapers and edges lightly soiled. Bound in contemporary 3/4 black leather and black cloth which is worn at edges. A scarce early American edition of its kind. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries several decades before the widespread adoption of Braille printers and educators in France and Britain began developing a variety of tactile reading systems for the visually impaired making independent reading among the blind possible for the first time in history. The results of an important competition at the Royal Society of Arts in Edinburgh in 1832 inspired the American activist Samuel Gridley Howe to research and develop his own embossed reading system for the blind which emerged in 1835 as "Boston Line Type." Drawing upon the methods of James Gall an entrant in the Edinburgh competition Howe created an alphabet of angular raised roman letters that "was said to be far less bulky and therefore less expensive than contemporary European roman-letter systems" PRINTING HISTORY p. 20. With the aid of a $1000 grant from the American Bible Society Howe purchased the first printing press for the New England Institution for the Education of the Blind today the Perkins School for the Blind and produced the country's first complete raised-letter Bible for the American Bible Society in 1842. The present Book of Psalms appears to have been printed with the first complete Howe-ABS Bible retaining the pagination of that production and was published separately with a new title page. ABS had published Selections of Psalms in 1835 and the Pennsylvania Institution for the Instruction of the Blind a Psalms and Hymns in 1840 and 1848 this is a very early edition of the Psalms. The object of the paper will be to harmonize the action and promote the efficient organization of the Whig party as well as to diffuse its principles and arouse its spirit and enthusiasm." Subscription costs are printed after which Gideon signs in type from Washington in June 1848.<br /> Beneath Gideon's name is a recommendation from seven members of the Whig Executive Committee of Congress urging support for the Paper which "will prove a vehicle of useful political information and if generally circulated will contribute powerfully to the desired change in the Administration of the Government."<br /> There follows a section for persons to sign up for subscriptions with their post office addresses. A photograph of a group of young Filipino men in suits with two white women and a child posing in front of a building. The caption reads “Grove Methodist Dormitory Boys and Missionaries Viganâ€. The Methodist Episcopal Church began planning its missionary outreach to the Philippines shortly after the 1898 American victory in the Spanish Civil War when the Philippines became an American colony. The mission center in Vigan the capital of Ilocos Sur on the island of Luzon was opened in 1904 headed by Kansan Berndt O. Peterson.1 Missionaries opened schools—with the aim of both educating and Americanizing their students—and made Vigan the base for evangelizing around the region. Rev. Robert Anderson Jardine the man who married the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. Album of newspaper cuttings and other material with signed note on front cover: 'PROTESTANT CUTTINGS PAMPHLETS & general items: R. Anderson Jardinee'.
Cuttings dating from 1910 and 1911 and 1930. Jardine dubbed by the press 'the Poor Man's Pastor' travelled to France to perform the ceremony. As a result his vestry committee resigned and he resigned his living emigrating to the United States. The cuttings are laid down on 19pp of a Victorian folio volume in superior brown calf binding tooled in gilt with marbled endpapers and 'HARMONY OF THE GOSPELS' stamped on the spine. As the title on the spine indicates the volume contains the manuscript of a harmony of the gospels covering 127pp with the text written around columns of printed text cut from a printed bible. Most of the cuttings relate to controversy between the Church of England and Roman Catholic Church and while the greater part are unattributed and undated some come from sources including the Record British Weekly Defender Liverpool Express Catholic Opinion Catholic Herald. Also present are two handbills. Topics include: scapular medals; 'Catholicism and Prosperity'; prayers for the dead; the St Hilary Case; Spanish Converts; Catholics and their press; 'Catholic M.P. as President of Protestant Mission'; Sunday boxing; the Catholic Encyclopaedia; 'Murder by Monk. Terrible Story of Monastic Corruption. Body cut in pieces'; Growth of Popery; the Pope's rebuke; the Immaculate Conception. The first 2pp. 12mo dated 30 June 1910 is headed 'The Suggested New Royal Declaration. A Manifesto by the Church Association.' 'Alex. W. Cobham Chairman'. New York: Oxford University Press American Branch 1892. First edition. Very Good . 4 x 6 1/4 inches. 593 numbered pages. Later owner's inscription Melville K. Bailey on ffep. Bound in full flexible morocco with gilt title to spine and gilt cross on rear cover thus designed to be used with a BCP. Samuel Hart's personal copy of the 1892 revised Protestant Episcopal Hymnal and paired apparently by him with #718. From the library of Samuel Hart which experienced a fire that damaged a number of books. As a result items from Hart's library are extremely rare. Samuel Hart 1845-1917 was dean of the Berkeley Divinity School the unofficial "middle way" seminary of the Episcopal Church at Middletown Connecticut. In 1886 he became the third custodian of the Standard Book of Common Prayer. In 1892 he became secretary of the House of Bishops. In 1898 he became the fourth historiographer of the Episcopal Church. He served in all three of these offices until his death. In 1893 he was elected Bishop of Vermont but he declined the office. A unique association copy. Contemporary black half straight grain morocco or in fact something that is the leathery equivalent of thin gruel masquerading as morocco over marbled paper covered boards titled in gilt to spine. Some scuffing and wear and to the boards and extremities with a couple of places where the thin skin of the leather has chipped away a little strong and tight regardless of cheap production ethics it's a very good little copy. Internally clean and rather artfully printed.<br /> <br /> A rather scathing satire of political standpoints of the day presented through the lens of a 19th century boxing fanatic and through the words of Tom Crib sic All England Champion of the art of bare knuckle boxing between 1808 and 1822 who won 15 title fights and suffered no defeats becoming on of the most famous and influential pugilists in history and the darling of "The Fancy" those gentlemen and not quite so gentle men who were addicted to the pursuit and practice of bare knuckle boxing in the early 19th century. Cribb and his contemporary sportsmen frequently featured in political satire and argument of the time in the guise of "Everyman" figure like the "Man on The Clapham Omnibus" a vague figure who nonetheless personified the thoughts and opinions of the average man in the street.
