Part I with tiny puncture marks in the lower blank margin through gathering I just touching one letter in the imprint on the title-page six small holes in I3 and one tiny hole in I4 causing loss of a couple of letters. Part III with paper flaw in the upper blank corner of A3 and A4 tiny tear 1/4 inch in the lower blank margin of F4 and paper flaw in the lower blank corner of I2 none affecting text. Contemporary sprinkled sheep. Covers ruled and decoratively tooled in blind spine decoratively tooled in gilt in compartments with two red morocco gilt lettering labels. Some expert restoration to joints and corners. Armorial bookplate of Gloucester on front free endpaper. Bookplate of Hugh Cecil Lowther 5th Earl of Lonsdale 1857-1944 on front pastedown his sale 12 July 1937 lot 445. An excellent copy. Housed in a felt-lined quarter brown morocco clamshell case spine with five raised bands decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments.<br /> <br /> Reynard the Fox "hero of several medieval European cycles of versified animal tales that satirize contemporary human society. Though Reynard is sly amoral cowardly and self-seeking he is still a sympathetic hero whose cunning is a necessity for survival. He symbolizes the triumph of craft over brute strength usually personified by Isengrim the greedy and dull-witted wolf. . The main literary tradition of Reynard the Fox descends from the extant French 'branches' of the Roman de Renart about 30 in number nearly 40000 lines of verse. The facetious portrayal of rustic life the camel as a papal legate speaking broken French the animals riding on horses and recounting elaborate dreams all suggest the atmosphere of 13th-century France" Merriam-Webster's Encyclopedia of Literature. There is some variation in chapter number within the early editions: From "Caxton's first edition 1481 to Thomas Gaultier's only edition 1550 the story is divided into 43 chapters" while the anonymous edition 1560-1585 has 58 chapters Varty. By the 17th century when the text is titled The Most Delectable History of Reynard the Fox it appears with only 25 chapters and maintains its image cycle. Early 17th century editions also maintained this "picture cycle" through Edward Brewster's 1662 edition but at this point the Wynkyn de Worde blocks were extremely worn and new set was created Varty. Forty images were used for his second edition 1671 and all contain his initials EB. "He published further illustrated editions in 1676 1681 1694 and 1701. in 1672 he grafted new life onto the old story with A Continuation Or Second Part of the Most Pleasant and Delightful History of Reynard the Fox" Varty for which he eventually created an additional 15 illustrations. In 1684 he would produce an additional sequel following the adventures of Reynard's son Reynardine. <br /> <br /> Brunet IV cols. 1228-1229. Lowndes p. 2076. With woodcut of King Lion's court on the title page 61 woodcuts in text of part 1 including 23 repeats all signed Edward Brewster and all half-page 7.5 x 10.5 cm to nearly full-page 13 x 9.5 cm and 15 woodcuts in part 2 all repeated from part 1. Further with a large woodcut decorated initial in part 3 and decorations built up from cast fleurons in parts 1 and 2. Set in textura types with incidental roman and italic including Moxon's 1669 Canon roman on the title-page of part 3. 3 parts in 1 volume. 160; 112; 4 160 pp. One of the rare sets of all 3 parts of the English Reynard the Fox the third part here in its first edition. The Reynard stories were already established as a coherent collection in the 12th century and were first printed in 1479 in a Dutch prose edition. They became especially well known when translated into English and adapted for Caxton's 1481 edition in 43 chapters. The publisher Edward Alde in London began work on an extensive revision of Caxton's text with many new additions but he published only the first part probably in 1620 the first edition of the present part 1 containing 25 chapters some corresponding with chapters in Caxton's edition and some not. Although the second part would have to wait 52 years the first part quickly became the standard English version of the Reynard the Fox stories with 8 editions from 1620 to 1671. Its language was modernized giving both a view of the stories as they were known through most of two centuries and insights into English values and culture of the time. In 1684 Brewster added the present first edition of part 3 giving the adventures of Reynard's son Reynardine.With 20th-century woodcut bookplate. The woodcut on C1 of part 1 is printed upside down. In good condition with parts 2 and 3 slightly browned. Two printed documents 'In the Matter of the Hull and Selby Railway': 'In the House of Lords. . Copy of the Petition of Robert Raikes Esq. in Opposition to the Bill' and 'Objections against the Bill on the Part of Robert Raikes Esq.'
Both documents printed by 'Meredith and Reeve Lincoln's Inn For Wilkinson Hull.' Both dated 1836. The two items are uniform in layout on folio bifoliums with the text covering the whole of the recto of the first leaf and the details printed lengthwise on the reverse of the second. Both in good condition and folded into the customary packets. An early example of nimbyism rather rich coming from a banker. The petition begins: 'In the House of Lords. To the Right Honourable the Lords Spiritual and Temporal of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland in Parliament assembled The Humble Petition of Robert Raikes of Welton House in the Parish of Welton in the East Riding of the County of York Esquire Sheweth .' Raikes's objection is 'THAT the circumstance of a Rail Road thus passing through such an Estate as your Petitioner's would to any Purchaser be a strong ground of objection and must necessarily detract from the value of the fee simple to a serious extent.' The other document is headed: In the Matter of the Hull and Selby Railway Bill. Reasons on the part of Robert Raikes Esq. against the Bill.' Following twenty numbered reasons the document states 'THAT Mr. Raikes is possessed of a large Mansion House rebuilt about 15 years ago at a Cost including the Out-buildings of nearly £20000 connected with a large and valuable Estate of upwards of 3000 Acres and three other considerable Mansions on the Property Mr. Raikes' House commanding an extensive and picturesque view over the Humber and the opposite Coast of Lincolnshire and no public Road intervening between him and the Humber and it is now proposed by this Bill to carry the Hull and Selby Railway between the House and the River in a line visible from the House passing through nearly a mile of his property.' The conclusion reads: 'AN APPEAL is therefore made to Parliament to protect private property from the unrelenting encroachment of speculation and a Land Owner from being compelled by the Legislature contrary to the General Principles of Law to sell his Property for the purpose of Establishing a Nuisance to himself from which Others are to derive the gain.' No copies of either item traced either on COPAC or OCLC WorldCat. Raikes was unsuccessful in his efforts: the Hull and Selby Railway opened in 1840. Without place or date. London 1938 or 1939. 2pp. 4to. In fair condition on lightly aged and worn paper. The first page consists of a typescript in two columns with names scored through and a few added in pencil. The second page has a few typewritten names together with dozens added in pencil clearly at different times. From 1919 the London Mercury's original editor J. C. Squire promoted the traditional verse of the Georgian Poets and their prose counterparts; on taking over in October 1934 Scott-James embraced the more fashionable modernist writing and that change is reflected in the present list. The names on it include 'Miss Scott-James' clearly a relation Isaiah Berlin Olaf Stapleton Sir Edward Grigg Leonard Woolf William Plomer Rose Macaulay Alec Waugh Liddell Hart C. E. M. Joad Sean O'Faolain Edwin Muir James Hanley Sir Archibald Hurd. In a few cases the reviewer's specialities are given for example 'W. A. Ismay E. Indies mod politics classics' and 'F. This book features new subscribers Milton Monson Bernard Marszalek expelled from Rosemont's alma mater Roosevelt University for protesting the refusal to hire anti-Vietnam War and labor activist Staughton Lynd Ben Gadd Joseph Wood and charmingly Mr. and Mrs. Henry Rosemont. Both of Franklin's parents were active union members; Henry a printer and typographer led strikes in the publishing industry while Sally Kaye Rosemont was a jazz musician elected President of Organized Women Musicians in 1965. During the Vietnam War the group successfully convinced Sears and other large department stores to replace displays of military weapon-themed children's toys with toy instruments. Sixteen delightful small porcelain spinning tops measuring 2.0 x 1.7cm in size each accompanied by ten handsome colour printed product labels heightened in gilt with soft purple cord ties 8.3 x 6cm. An intriguing collection of sake advertising ephemera in very good condition. These sake promotional giveaways and accompanying die-cut cards in the shape of the Order of the Golden Kite are advertisements associated with Meiyo-gura a sake brand sold in Nihonbashi Tokyo. <br> <br>The advertisement describes a koma spinning top attached beneath the bottle top which could also serve as a small entertainment item. Each koma was hexagonal and could be used as a dice or a novelty accessory for drinking games. The value printed on the koma could be redeemed if customers presented both the koma and the accompanying medal card. <br> <br>These redemption promotions were available between 1937 and 1939. However in June 1941 the rationing of sake was introduced firmly ending such promotional schemes. The product labels which were finely printed as these are also informed customers about how to claim these discounts further enhancing the appeal of the product during its promotional period. <br> <br>A curious example of the everyday cultural impacts of Japanese militarism - the Order of the Golden Kite was an award exclusively for military service and was not available to the civilian public. Over the course of the Second Sino-Japanese and Pacific Wars the order would be awarded over 140000 times dwarfing all previous conflicts and reflecting the frenetic nature of Japan's total mobilisation. . 名誉蔵. Informed attack on the design of HMS Gorgon 1837. Long Manuscript Letter lacking signature addressed to Benjamin Sharpe of the Royal Navy containing detailed criticism and informed criticism following an inspection of the ship.
Devonport. 13 April 1839. HMS Gorgon was designed by Sir William Symonds and launched in 1837. Her direct-acting engines in which the engine's cylinders are placed under the crankshaft built by Seaward and Company were the first to be fitted in any vessel. She was scrapped in 1864. 4pp. 4to. Bifolium. In good condition lightly aged and worn but with the signature torn away. Addressed with seal in black wax to 'Benjamin Sharpe Esq 19 Fleet Street London' Sharpe's father had been resident partner at that address in the banking firm of Gosling & Sharpe. The first paragraph reads: 'Dear Sharpe I have just returned from the Gorgon and my visit to her has verified the substance of our Conversation on Thursday last. Her present armament consists of 4 32-pounder bored guns & 2 84-pounders 10-inch on the weather deck. if properly armed she would also carry 12 32-pounders on the main-deck but she is deficient in these. Her draft of water is about 15th. & 15 . 6 which I believe is what she ought to draw if her armament were complete with the full compliment of men water provisions munitions &c.' The letter continues with detailed criticism with reference to a trail 'in the river in July last with Ld Minto & other lords of the Admiralty on bd' the fact that 'her displacement had been sadly miscalculated'an incident on the coast of Spain her engines and paddle-boards. 'To judge of Gorgon whether she be a failure or otherwise she should be tried as an armed vessel carrying 16 32-pounders & 2 swivel guns . We have no more money that we know what to do with - no more workmen than we <> to keep pace with our wants in the shipwright department - & yet we are sacrificing both to the vain endeavours of adventurers in naval architecture while there are plenty of persons in the service who might be advantageously employed in preventing the occurrence of these & other discreditable blunders if it were not the fashion to prefer speculative notions to the plain & unerring principles of the <> of naval Construction'. A scarce and intriguing survival about which nothing has hitherto been discovered. Printed in heavy black type characteristic of the early nineteenth century. The first paragraph reads: 'In consequence of there being a large demand for copies of the Engraveing sic of the peoples Hed-vo-cate I anothur sic artist and not wishing to depreciate the above named engraveing but thinking it rather imparfect ave printed anuther ENGRAVEING with the following adishuns and is to be Sold at Pandaemonium and is a parfect sketch of one of its intended Inhabitants THE PEOPLES FREND & HED-VO-CATE He will have the Eye Of An Hawk the Tooth Of A Serpent and the Stomack Of A Horse Leach which is ever crying out Give! Give!! and is never satisfied.' The text continues in the same vein with the second paragraph containing the four lines of verse: 'The Savage all Wild in his Den Is nobler and better than Thou. Thou standest a Wonder to Men Such Cruelty Blackens thy Brow.' The last paragraph reads: 'The Artist thinks that the Sketch is now parfect and he hopes to be encoraged by a large sale of Copies and if they go well he happen may make a Sketch or two of some of their other Hed-vo-cates.'
