Edvige Pesce Gorini, Italian poet, editor of the 'Giornale dei Poeti' [Violet Bonham Carter (1887-1969); Mark Raymond Bonham Car
Edvige Pesce Gorini Italian poet Three Typed Letters Signed the first two in full and the third 'E P Gorini' the first two to Violet Bonham Carter and the last to her son Mark the first in English and the last two in Italian.
21 February 1946; 15 May 1947; and 28 July 1948. All three from Via Angelo Poliziano No. 69 Rome. Text of all three items clear and complete. All three on lightly aged paper creased and with some wear to extremities. Letter One 8vo 1 p; 20 lines of text: She thanks Bonham Carter for her 'kind and appreciative letter' and 'will see that through the English Embassy' she receives 'a copy of my short story: "I due prigionieri" of which your son is the protagonist'. An officer in the Grenadier Guards during the war Mark Bonham Carter had escaped from a prison camp in northern Italy. Describes material she is sending relating to her 'literary career'. The TLS 'spoke well of my poetry books'. Asks if it might be possible for her 'last novel which just came out entitled: "Viaggio di Nozze" ' to be translated into English or to have 'now and then some of my short stories published in English Magazines and Reviews' Bonham Carter 'as a mother' 'will realize that after the loss of my husband the burden of my family is wholly on me. As you may know living conditions here are terrible; during my absence from Rome my apartment was ransacked and I lost everything. This the reason why I must work to earn some money to support myself and my boys.' Letter Two 4to 1 p; 24 lines of typewritten text and six-line autograph postscript: Her friend Doctor Lando Luciani is going to London on a business trip and has agreed to take with him Gorini's two latest books for Bonham Carter. Once again enquires regarding the translation of her works into English. Letter Three 8vo 2 pp; 48 typed lines and a 7-line autograph postscript: She is sorry that she has not received 'la rivista contenente la novella che ricordava l'episodio di montagna; in questi giorni ho mandato la stessa novella ad un quotidiano della Sicilia e appena uscira gliene faro mandare due copie; poiche c'e il suo nome vero e il nome del suo amico sara un ricordo di quelle giornate calamitose. . Mi fa piacere che lei ricordi l'Italia con simpatia e se mai venisse a Roma magari per l'Anno Santo nel 1950 non dimentichi di venirmi a trovare . . . se io saro ancora viva'. Further speculation on the translation of her work into English in London or New York. Asks what Bonham Carter is doing in the latter place. Also included on four pieces of paper are two sets of two typewritten transcripts of reviews of Gorini's work: the first from The Times 27 December 1923 of 'Il Ritorno' 'The volume is already in its second edition and it deserves to be popular.'; and the second from the Times Literary Supppement 19 March 1925 of 'Nativita'. 21 February 1946; 15 May 1947; and 28 July 1948. All three from Via Angelo Poliziano No. 69, Rome. unknown

Edward Bouverie Pusey (1800-1882), Regius Professor of Hebrew at the University of Oxford, a leading figure in the Oxford Moveme
'An utterly unreadable book': Edward Bouverie Pusey Regius Professor of Hebrew at Oxford and a leading figure of the Oxford Movement. Autograph Letter Signed to a peer discussing his pamphlet and book on 'Marriage with a Deceased Wife’s Sister'.
30 June 1880. No place. See his entry in the Oxford DNB. 3pp 12mo. Bifolium. Sixty-one lines of text in Pusey’s distinctive minuscule and not always easily decipherable hand. Aged and worn. The item has been repaired after damp damage with the second leaf laid down on a piece of thick paper. Loss of a few words of text. Pusey begins by stating that his pamphlet ‘God’s Prohibition of the Marriage with a Deceased Wife’s Sister’ 1860 which he believes is out of print is ‘more readable than the longer book’ ‘Marriage with a Deceased Wife’s Sister’ 1849 of whose ‘very heavy form’ he gives a description. He explains why he feels it would be ‘hardly fair to republish it’. He discusses a ‘proposed change in the law of marriage’ before stating of his two works: ‘If your Lordship knew of any young man who would remould either of these he would be most welcome.’ He has 250 copies of the book he ‘could gladly place at your Lordship’s disposal’. He discusses what would need to be done to ‘recast it’ with reference to ‘social relations’. ‘I have looked again at my book and felt sure that no one would read it unless he wishes to carefully the whole question. It is dry. I remember that I felt that I was undergoing a sharp cross examination by Dr Lushington . It is an utterly unreadable book’. He continues with reference to a speech in the House of Lords and ‘Mr Keble’s pamphlet’. Pusey’s pamphlet was republished in the year following his death. 30 June 1880. No place. unknown

Edward Broughton-Rouse, Sheffield solicitor, 'Ecclesiastical Agent' (agent for the purchase and sale of advowsons):
Printed pamphlet with 'P.T.O.' in large letters on cover and handbill notice with autograph covering letter to an unnamed clergyman Rev. Charles William Shepherd in which he describes himself as 'the "Doyen" of Ecclesiastical Agents'.
None of the items dated. Pamphlet from circa 1897. The three items indicate a brashness approaching hucksterism on the part of a Victorian professional in addition to marketing techniques advanced for the period. Letter: 12mo 2 pp. Stamped at head: 'Edw. Broughton Rouse M.A. LL.D. 436 GLOSSOP ROAD SHEFFIELD.' Twenty-five lines of text. Clear and complete. Fair on lightly-aged paper. Many hundreds of this letter must have been copied out and sent to clergymen throughout England. Begins 'Should you be thinking of effecting an Exchange or of disposing of your Patronage I shall be glad if you will allow me to either endeavour to carry through the former or to introduce a Purchaser as the case may be -'. Later he boasts 'Now that Mr. Emery Stark has retired I am I believe the "Doyen" of Ecclesiastical Agents.' In pencil on the reverse are notes regarding the Rev. Charles William Shepherd's benefice: 'Commuted Value £356 & 6 acres of Glebe C.W.S. aged 65 next month.' Pamphlet: 12mo 16 pp. On art paper. Good though aged and with rusting staples. Unusual cover with illustration of cloister and letters 'P. T. O.' in large font. Two full-page photographs: the first of a smug frock-coated figure presumably Broughton-Rouse inside an opulent Victorian drawing room captioned 'Good Morning! Well I hope you like the Rectory' and the second of his impressive residence the 'Grey Tower Glossop Road Sheffield'. Four pages of testimonial 'Extracts from Letters of the Clergy' initials only of writers. The Benefices Act is reproduced over three pages followed by a page of details of Broughton-Rouse's 'General Law Club' and a perforated subscripton leaf with photo of 'The New Municipal Buildings' on the reverse. The pamphlet ends with advertisement for Broughton-Rouse as 'Agent for Two or Three of the Leading Life Offices'. Handbill: 4to 1 p. Good on aged paper. Headed 'The Benefices' Act' and consisting of an 'Extract from "Truth" of 12th June 1902.' On 1 August 1905 according to Whitaker's Sheffield Almanac Broughton-Rouse was 'suspended from the practise of his profession for one year. The charge against him is that he induced Walter Brown the patron of a living and the Rev. William Henry Holland Healey who was presented to the living to commit an act of simony and that he caused the latter to make a declararation under the Benefices Act 1898 which he knew to be false'. From the Shepherd family archive. None of the items dated. Pamphlet from circa 1897. unknown

He begins by thanking him for the photograph: 'Whenever I look on it - and I shall do so often - I shall be reminded of the fourth gentle poet who did all he could to make a few pleasant hours for a humble brother <> during his short sojourn in the great metropolitan maze of this England of ours'. Since his return from London he has been reading Sawyer's book 'Ten Miles from Town' 1866 'and can feel my way into the heart of its sweet beauty much better here than I could possibly have done amid the turmoil of a city'. He quotes from the book adding that he is 'content and cann better attune my ear to the <> melody of your tender verse'. He mentions one poem which 'interested us very much': 'all throughout the book there is such an under-flame of delicate feeling and sentiment that one is fain to stop that one may dream such happy dreams'. He would like to send him a photograph in return but thinks that he will 'get a better one than I have from our friend Blanchard'. He concludes with his 'kind regards to Mrs Sawyer & dear Procter'.
