Very good in a good dust wrapper.
First edition.RARE IN CLOTH WITH A DUSTWRAPPER.
Ira Einhorn b. 1940 was an activist in the 1960s and '70s involved in ecological anti-war and anti-establishment groups. He called himself "the Unicorn" from the translation of his name-- "one horn" or "unicorn". In 1977 he murdered his ex-girlfriend Holly Maddux whose decomposing body was discovered in a trunk in his apartment. He fled the country while awaiting trial and lived in Europe for the next sixteen years. He was finally tracked down in France and after complicated negotiations regarding his extradition was finally returned to the U.S. in 2001 and began serving a life sentence in the state prison at Houtzdale Pennsylvania. He was known as "the Unicorn Killer". The book at hand is a rambling counter-cultural rant illustrated with surrealistic images. Garden City, NY: Doubleday & Company, Inc., 1972. hardcover

Einstein & Rosen's paper: pp. 404-405.

First printing of Einstein and Rosen's answer to Silberstein's critique of Einstein's Theory of Relativity ."Ludwik Silberstein who initially was a supporter of the special theory objected at different occasions against general relativity. In 1920 he argued that the deflection of light by the sun as observed by Arthur Eddington et al. 1919 is not necessarily a confirmation of general relativity but may also be explained by the Stokes-Planck theory of complete aether drag. However such models are in contradiction with the aberration of light and other experiments see "Alternative theories". And in 1935 Silberstein claimed to have found a contradiction in the Two-body problem in general relativity. However also this claim was refuted by Einstein and Rosen 1935 in the paper offered."Wikipedia. unknown

However in his paper 'Über die von Relativitätsprincip geforderte Trägheit der Energie' the offered paper which predates the former mentioned by six months Einstein gave a clear statement of the mass-energy equivalence E=mc2. See Lanczos: The Einstein Decade pp.149-150 and 153 as well as Volume 2 of 'The Collected Papers of Albert Einstein' pp. 428.Einstein's first paper regarding the relation E=mc2 is his fourth 1905 paper 'Ist die Trägheit eines Körpers von seinem Energieinhalt abhängig'. In this short paper Einstein showed that a body releasing the energy E in the form of radiation will have its mass decreased by E/c2 and concluded that the mass of a body is a measure of its energy content e.g. that all energy has mass. The next time Einstein returns to the subject is in his 1906 paper 'Das Prinzip von der Erhaltung der Schwerpunkts Bewegung und die Trägheit der Energie.'. Here Einstein concluded that one must either ascribe the inertial mass E/c2 to any form of energy E or else give up the fundamental law mechanics regarding conservation of the motion of the center of gravity. Then finally in the 1907 paper 'Über die von Relativitätsprincip geforderte Trägheit der Energie.' the offered paper Einstein makes the decisive step of assuming that all mass has energy. Einstein then continues to show that this stipulation cannot lead to a contradiction in any relativistic argument. THE CELEBRATED CASE OF FITZ JOHN PORTER. An American Dreyfus Affair. Maps by Barbara Long.
344 p. + Portrait Frontis. Illustrated with maps. Mildly XLib. Title page age stained. Tall 8vo. Original full green cloth binding, slightly soiled. Remnants of library call numbers on spine. Hardbound. First Edition. Fitz John Porter (1822-1901) was a career U.S. Army officer and a Union general in the American Civil War. His military career was ruined by an unjust court martial called by military and political rivals. Porter's corps was sent to reinforce Maj. Gen. John Pope in the Northern Virginia Campaign, a reassignment that he openly challenged and complained about, criticizing Pope personally. During the Second Battle of Bull Run, on August 29, 1862, he was ordered to attack the flank and rear of "Stonewall" Jackson's wing of the Army of Northern Virginia. He received a message from Pope directing him to attack the Confederate right (which Pope assumed to be Jackson on Stony Ridge), but at the same time to maintain contact with the neighboring division under Gen. Reynolds, a conflict in orders that could not be resolved. Pope was apparently unaware that Confederate Gen. Longstreet's wing of the army had arrived on the battlefield and the proposed envelopment of Jackson's position would have collided suicidally with Longstreet's large force. Porter chose not to make the attack because of the intelligence he had received that Longstreet was to his immediate front. Pope was infuriated and accused Porter of insubordination. Porter remained in command of the corps through the Maryland Campaign and the corps served in a reserve position at the Battle of Antietam. On November 25, 1862, Porter was arrested and court-martialed for his actions at Second Bull Run. By this time, Gen. McClellan had been relieved by President Abraham Lincoln and could not provide political cover for his protege. In fact, Porter's association with the disgraced McClellan and his open criticism of Pope were significant reasons for his conviction at court-martial. The officers of the court were appointed by Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton, who detested McClellan, and most of those officers received promotions after they delivered their verdict. Porter was found guilty on January 10, 1863, of disobedience and misconduct, and he was dismissed from the Army. He spent most of the remainder of his life fighting against this injustice. In 1878, a special commission under General John M. Schofield exonerated Porter by finding that his reluctance to attack Longstreet probably saved Pope's Army of Virginia from an even greater defeat. Eight years later, President Chester A. Arthur reversed Porter's sentence and a special act of the U.S. Congress restored Porter's commission as an infantry colonel in the U.S. Army, backdated to 1861, but without any back pay due. Two days later, August 7, 1886, Porter, vindicated, retired from the Army at his own request. SHELF W25

Eisenstein Sergei translated from the Russian by X. Danko
Notes of a Film Director
Moscow: Foreign Languages Publishing House. Near Fine in Very Good dj. 1958. 1st English-language edition. Hardcover. slight bumping to upper corners minor discoloration in gutters and on pp.4/5 from old bookmark probably no other significant wear; jacket shows a bit of wear along top and bottom edges some surface abrasions along spine minor paper loss at top of spine tiny chip at top edge of front panel. Arts Library Series B&W photographs and drawings A collection of 20 essays articles and letters written by the great Russian director and theoretician in the 1930s and 1940s. Part One "About Myself and My Films" is largely autobiographical; Part Two "Problems of Film Direction" is primarily concerned with the aesthetics of film; Part Three "Portraits of Artists" presents Eisenstein's thoughts about the men he worked with and/or admired among them Maxim Gorky Sergei Prokofiev and Charlie Chaplin including a section specifically about Chaplin's film THE GREAT DICTATOR. Illustrated throughout with photographs; a final section presents a sampling of Eisenstein's drawings and sketches. NOTE that this book bears no publication date and is often mis-dated probably based on Eisenstein's foreword which is dated 1946; however a couple of the pieces are dated as late as 1948 the year Eisenstein died in February so any earlier assigned dates are clearly incorrect. I am taking my 1958 date from the British Library catalogue although it should be noted that the Library of Congress record states the publication date as "1959". .
