‎[The Babylonian Talmud in Hebrew]; [Walter Jacob]‎

‎Talmud Bavli im perush Rashi ve-tosafot ve-Rabenu Asher Babylonian Talmud in Hebrew‎

‎Vienna: L. C. Zamarski & C. Dittmarsch 1873. The Babylonian Talmud complete in 24 books bound in 12 volumes. The title page to the first volume is undated but typically dated 1864 in institutional catalogs; the second volume is dated 1866 the last volume is dated 1872 but the last page of the Taharot Vol. XXIV is dated 1873. Tall quarto each volume measuring 14" x 10". Bound in half cloth and paper-covered boards leather spine labels with gilt lettering. Title pages printed in red black yellow and gilt. Very Good overall lots of edge wear with exposed boards chipping toning and wear to spines. Cloth of volume 7 appears to have been inexpertly repaired; binding tape repair to rear hinge. Other than that the bindings are sturdy; contents have a little foxing with age. Occasional marginal notes presumably from either Ernest or Walter Jacob; a few pages of notes in Hebrew laid in as well.
This set has a very distinguished provenance: it came from the estate of Walter Jacob a significant leader in Reform Judaism in America author of 43 books and the chief rabbi at Rodef Shalom in Pittsburgh. His father Ernest Israel Jacob 1899-1974 was district rabbi of Augsburg and was deported to Dachau concentration camp for several months after Kristallnacht in 1938; he eventually emigrated to the US. Walter's grandfather Benno Jacob was considered one of the great biblical commentators of liberal Judaism. Ernest Jacob has written a note on the front pastedown of the first volume: "The textual corrections and marginal annotations in this Vienna edition of the Babylonian Talmud are by the late orientalist Samuel Landauer a great Aramaic scholar formally librarian of the University library at Strasbourg Alsace from whose estate I bought this work. Ernest I. Jacob."
A lovely 19th century Hebrew edition of the central text of Rabbinic Judaism and the source of Jewish law and theology compiled in the 3rd to 6th centuries in Mesopotamia.
International buyers please note: shipping this set outside the United States will require extra charges due to its weight and size. ‎N.p.: N.p. 1970. Two vintage borderless reference photographs from the 1970 documentary film. Annotations in manuscript ink on the verso.

Some have claimed that "Metallica: Some Kind of Monster" 2004 was the first documentary to inadvertently document the deconstruction of a rock band but Michael Lindsay-Hogg beat them to it by 34 years. "Let It Be" originally conceived as a documentary that would accompany a performance broadcast on television morphed into a feature film when the broadcast idea was dropped. The director had no idea going into the project how much conflict had developed within the band and unwittingly wound up putting onto celluloid a picture of what was the most acrimonious and confused time in the band's storied six-year career. A fascinating document that became the fascinating final project to be released by the Beatles.

10 x 8 inches. Near Fine one photo with a short closed tear at the left edge. ‎Jack Kerouac: Selected Letters 1940-1956. Edited by Ann Charters.‎

‎
New York::: Viking Press 1995. First Printing of the First US Edition. A Fine copy in a Fine unclipped dust jacket. It was in his letters that Jack Kerouac set down the raw material that he transmuted into his novels exploring and refining the spontaneous prose style that became his trademark. The letters in this volume written between 1940 when Kerouac was a freshman at college and 1956 immediately before his breathless leap into celebrity with the publication of On the Road offer invaluable insights into Kerouac's family life his friendships with Neal and Carolyn Cassady Allen Ginsberg Gary Snyder and William S. Burroughs his travels love affairs and literary apprenticeship. At once fascinating reading and a major addition to Kerouac scholarship here is a rare portrait of the writer as a young adventurer of immense talent energy and ambition in the midst of writing and living an American legend.
Viking Press,, hardcover‎

‎[The Bekker - Translation of Homer's Ilias and Odyssee] - [Homer] Bekker, Immanuel‎

‎Carmina Homerica - Volumen Prius: Ilias / Volumen Altertum: Odyssea Odyssey.‎

‎1858. Bonn Apud Adolphum Marcum 1858. Octavo. VI 594 pages / 480 pages. Hardcover / Original 19th century half-vellum with marbled-paper-covered boards. Bookseller-Sticker of William McGee College Bookseller - 18 Nassau Street - Dublin to the pastedowns of both Volumes. Both bindings with staining and wear. The Odyssey - Volume with minor split to lower spine. Interior in excellent condition besides an occasional appearance of a fainted dampstain. August Immanuel Bekker 21 May 1785 – 7 June 1871 was a German philologist and critic. Born in Berlin Bekker completed his classical education at the University of Halle under Friedrich August Wolf who considered him as his most promising pupil. In 1810 he was appointed professor of philosophy in the University of Berlin. For several years between 1810 and 1821 he travelled in France Italy England and parts of Germany examining classical manuscripts and gathering materials for his great editorial labours. Some of the fruits of his researches were published in the Anecdota Graeca 3 vols 1814–1821 but the major results are to be found in the enormous array of classical authors edited by him. Anything like a complete list of his works would occupy too much space but it may be said that his industry extended to nearly the whole of Greek literature with the exception of the tragedians and lyric poets. His best known editions are those of Plato 1816–1823 Oratores Attici 1823–1824 Aristotle 1831–1836 Aristophanes 1829 and twenty-five volumes of the Corpus Scriptorum Historiae Byzantinae. The only Latin authors edited by him were Livy 1829–1830 and Tacitus 1831. Bekker confined himself entirely to manuscript investigations and textual criticism; he contributed little to the extension of other types of scholarship. Bekker numbers have become the standard way of referring to the works of Aristotle and the Corpus Aristotelicum. He was elected a Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1861. He died in Berlin aged 86. Wikipedia hardcover‎

Octavo 12 issues bound as one volume 288 pages 24 pages each issue with a handful of illustrations. The first number has 'Second Edition' printed at the head of the first page. A note on Trove states that 'the only difference identified is on page 5 where a different verse is printed in each edition'; in this one it is a topical limerick about 'An elderly farmer of Mitcham'. Original gilt-decorated cloth containing the twelve separate issues of the drop-title magazine; binding a little worn at the extremities with the front cover bowed and a little ink-marked; old tape-stains to the endpapers; vertical crease down the middle of most issues where folded before binding; trifling signs of use and age; a very good copy of a rare item with the ownership details of local pioneer Frank Chapman of Coromandel Valley on the front flyleaf. This elusive journal was 'devoted to the interests of the Adelaide Hills suburbs Blackwood Coromandel Valley Belair and Eden Hills'. The editorial to what became the final issue commences thus: 'Many a good man has been hung for no fault of his own and "The Blackwood Magazine" because the Kaiser has chosen to embroil the world is to be suspended'.
