Fine. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Original cloth bdg. with gilt lettering in a very calligraphic style on the front board embossed decoratively. Demy 8vo. 22 x 14 cm. In Ottoman script Old Turkish with Arabic letters. 107 p. Slightly fading on cloth and sporadically foxing on endpapers otherwise a fine copy. Extremely rare first and only edition of this early Wien imprint of the "Book of Isaiah" translated into Ottoman script. It is the earliest example of three imprints in Adolf Holzhausen Printing House of Wien in the Ottoman Turkish language according to the Özege catalogue. Adolf Holzhausen 1868-1931 was an Austrian publisher and bookseller. He was the son of Adolf Holzhausen the Elder 1827-1892 the head of the Viennese court and the university's book printing company. He was trained in the family business his father had owned the Manzsche book printing company since 1858. Holzhausen learned the typesetting of oriental scripts and also provided the company with oriental letters. He later founded the university book printing company and his own publishing house which mainly published art books and historical works. After the First World War he was promoted to the head of the Military Geography Institute. Also he suggested that Austrian educational book publishers worked together. In Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic letters). 107 p. Slightly fading on cloth and sporadically foxing on endpapers, otherwise a fine copy. Extremely rare first and only edition of this early Wien imprint of the "Book of Isaiah" translated into Ottoman script. It is the earliest example of three imprints in Adolf Holzhausen Printing House of Wien, in the Ottoman Turkish language according to the Özege catalogue. On paper with Britannia watermark and 'W M 1816'. Folio 4 pp. Bifolium. Text clear and complete. On aged and creased paper with some wear and chipping to extremities. Previously folded into a packet docketed in a contemporary hand 'Answers to Queries'. The first page begins with 'Ansr. 1.' a list of ten ministers from '1. The Duke of Richelieu President of the Council of Ministers & of the Privy Council & Min: Sec: of State having the Dept. of Foreign Affairs.' and ending with '10. Director general Count Pradel'. P. 1 also features 'Question 2 Answer A' beginning 'The Members of the Govt. are principally persons who have been in the service of Buonaparte'. P.2 has 'Question 11' on the 'Rent of Land' and '2.13' in two columns on poor rates. P.3 is in two columns and touches on 'The Revenues of the Army' and 'the relations of the Gallican Church with the Pope' 'desirous of increasing the number of Bishopricks'. The last page carries 'Answer. No. 3.' on the salaries of ministers. Written in a hand at points tantalisingly similar to that of the Duke of Wellington. On paper with Britannia watermark and 'W M | 1816'. unknown

Long telegram to the British Legation in Reykjavik from the Home Office in Whitehall instructing them on position to take with the press depending on the result of the impending 'GERMAN AIROFFENSIVE CONTRABRITAIN' i.e. the Blitz.
On 'Landssimi Islands' telegram form. From London to 'PRODROME REYKJAVIK' on 19 August 1940. From the papers of Rev. J. C. Fulton Hood who having been Chief Chaplain British Forces in Norway in 1940 worked in Iceland between 1940 and 1941. A pencil note on the telegram see below refers to 'The Midnight Sun' the troops’ newspaper in Norway and Iceland which Hood founded and edited. He was made a Knight of the Icelandic Order of the Falcon in 1949. The telegram is in good condition on lightly-aged paper and bears an oval blue 'LANDSSIMINN' stamp. It is headed 'PRESSE PRODROME REYKJAVIK' 'Prodrome Reykjavik' being the British Icelandic Legation's telegraph address. It reads as follows: 'MOIPCB LONDON OBGS R146 77W 1902 19 = = CIRCULAR GUIDANCE STOP TIS IMPORTANT YOU SHOULD TAKE EVERY OPPORTUNITY NOW EMPHASISE CRITICAL NATURE PRESENT GERMAN AIROFFENSIVE CONTRABRITAIN SUCCESS OR FAILURE OF WHICH WILL CONSTITUTE MAJOR TURNING POINT WARWARDS STOP IF AND WHEN AS RESULT HEAVY LOSSES GERMAS COMPELLED OFFCALL OFFENSIVE YOULL THEN BE POSITIONWARDS TO POINT ITS CESSATION AS MAJOR BRITISH VICTORY AND EXPOSE GERMAN ATTEMPTS CONCEAL FAILURE BY PASSING OFF AS SIDESHOW OR MASKING WITH SPECTACULAR ADVANCE SOME OTHER POINT = EMPAX 577'. In pencil in the top right-hand corner of the telegram is the following pencil note referring to Hood's newspaper 'The Midnight Sun': 'Could Hood get this over in his paper signed C.M. 20/8'. Between July and September 1940 the Luftwaffe attacked RAF Fighter Command to gain air superiority as a prelude to invasion bombing English Channel convoys ports and RAF airfields and supporting industries; the Blitz began in earnest on 7 September. Gelatin silver print 200 x 130 mm; photographic montage with 6 vignette shots of comedian Frith ""in character"" for his roles in A night out Going up You're in love High jinks So long Letty and Oh lady! lady! with a slightly larger head-and-shoulders portrait by Langham captioned 'Au Revoir Albert Frith' at the centre; the print is in excellent condition laid down on the original studio mount trimmed across the bottom margin with loss of The Burlington Studio imprint. In the 1920s and early 1930s English-born Alfred Frith was arguably the most popular comedian in Australia where he toured prolifically in between numerous return visits to his homeland. The following notice appeared in The Herald Melbourne 22 May 1922: 'To mark Alfred Frith's 2500th performance In Australia and as a souvenir upon his departure for England a large photograph showing him in six characters and as he appears on the stage will be presented to the ladies in the audience at Her Majesty's Theatre on Monday night next.' Note: The NLA holds another example of this photograph as part of the Lady Viola Tait collection which has the original mount complete with The Burlington Studio imprint. unknown

The Caledonian Canal Scotland. Manuscript Letter signed by James Hope of Rickman & Hope solicitors to the Bank of Scotland regarding 'dues collected for the passage of Vessels through the Caledonian Canal'. With detailed accounts of receipts.
31 Moray Place Edinburgh. 27 December 1825. 4pp. foolscap 8vo on two bifoliums. On aged and worn paper with slight bloom at head and a little loss to spine from disbinding. The letter 2pp. begins: 'Now for a twelvemonth the dues collected for the passage of Vessels through the Caledonian Canal have been progressively deposited in the Bank of Scotland at Inverness and Fortwilliam by the Collectors upon deposit Receipts in the name of Mr Rickman and me.' The receipts amounting to £4200 and 'a certain Sum of Interest' having arisen he conveys the instructions of the Canal's Commissioners that a new account be opened in Edinburgh. The letter continues with further details and is signed 'Ja Hope'. Accompanying the letter and 2pp. long is a tabulated 'Schedule of Deposit Receipts of The Bank of Scotland sent to the Bank to be placed to the Credit of the Commissioners for the Caledonian Canal' with the first entry dated 23 August 1824 and the last 19 December 1825. This lists 42 deposits made in Inverness and Fort William with 'Dates' 'Days' 'Interest' and 'Sums'. The interest on the £4200 total is £68 13s 3d. Docketed 'Schedule of Deposit Receipts of the Bank of Scotland Canal Dues.' Accompanying the document is a manuscript resolution dated 'Bank of Scotland 29 Decr 1835': 'The Sum of £4268. 13/3 is placed to Credit of Messrs Rickman & Hope for Commrs for the Caledonian Canal. But we're hoping just to make it past Issue One. Most short story publications we realised are only ever one invoice and three beers away from becoming a nudie magazine to stay alive' from the editorial in the first issue. The editor writes in Number 10 that 'This issue will close out the first chapter of "The Canary Press" - with a bang we hope. Bound in before the script are several production documents many with Frank's manuscript ink and pencil annotations including several shooting schedules cast and crew lists and contact information and a brief performance rundown. <br /> <br /> An hourlong country music special hosted by Kris Kristofferson held in memory of folk music legend Maybelle Carter who sang with her sister-in-law Sara Carter and Sara's husband A.P. Carter as The Carter Family. All three were born and raised in southwest Virginia and were the first vocal group to become country music stars. Maybelle Carter's distinctive method of playing guitar known as the "Carter Scratch" became a hallmark of the group's style and was widely copied in later roots gospel bluegrass and country music. <br /> <br /> Housed in a brown titled three-ring binder noted as MASTER with the name of Selig Frank on the bottom right corner. Terms: without date or place. Bagshawe's Note: 13 Old Square Lincoln's Inn. 12 January 1853. Terms and note: 3pp. foolscap 8vo. Bifolium. Docketted by Wiseman on reverse of second leaf 'Cath Standard' with 'Bagshawe Correspondence 1837-64' in another hand. In fair condition on lightly-aged paper. The thirteen terms are headed: 'Mr Richardson on behalf of his firm of Richardson & Sons proposes as follows'. The first two terms read: '1. Mr. Richardson To supply including what he has already paid £1000. as part of the capital for carrying on the Catholic Standard Newspaper. 2 £2000. Capital to be supplied in addition to his £1000. by Cardinal Wiseman or the persons whom he shall appoint.' The covering note signed 'H R Bagshaw' is in a secretarial hand and reads: 'My dear Lord Cardinal The above are the terms which Mr. Richardson proposes. Tbilisi: Compiled and Lithographed at the Military Topographical Department of the Caucasus Military District 1870 with corrections to August 1896. Original large-format colour-lithographed map of the Caucasus 132 x 151 cm dissected into 24 panels and backed onto linen text in Cyrillic script folding down to 33.5 x 27 cm. With an extensive key decorative title cartouche and table showing the divisions of the Caucasus. The linen backing is in places dust-soiled and stained some tiny holes in the edges from former wall mounting that have been repaired somewhat browned overall and with a few minor brown spots a few small marginal tears not affecting map repaired with contemporary strips of paper linen edges are slightly frayed in places withal a very good example of this scarce and impressive map. A rare and large-format wall map of the Caucasus region in Russian. The map covers the modern territories of Armenia Georgia Azerbaijan Dagestan Chechnya Kalmykia etc. The map extends south to Tehran and north to Astrakhan. The eastern Black Sea is on the left and the western Caspian Sea is on the right. Beneath the title is a depiction of a railway winding through the mountains and opposite it a galloping horse with a cart crossing the mountains. Later editions were published at least until 1883 and 1903. The later edition is mentioned in 20th-century works dealing with international border disputes in the Caucasus. At the time of its creation it was almost certainly the finest map of the Caucasus produced in the Russian Empire. Kingston Jamaica. 1785 1787 1789 1791 1792 1795. Chester Vale a substantial estate of 1420 acres paid taxes on 124 slaves in 1801. McLarty d.1844 was Physician-General for Surrey Jamaica and several letters written by him from the island are in the National Library of Scotland and are quoted in Alan L Karras's 'Sojourners in the Sun: Scottish Migrants in Jamaica and the Chesapeake 1740-1800' Cornell 1992. In 1794 he acquired Chester Vale on his marriage to Elizabeth Susanna Breon whose father Edmund Breon had died in 1792 leaving her the ward of the solicitor Thomas Cockburn. A promo extolling the wonders and beauties of South Cheyenne Canon located at the North end of Cheyenne Mountain five miles from Colorado Springs. Rock walls 1200 feet high and many interesting features including the famous Seven Falls. Reached by carriage road and electric railway. Contains a short poems by Helen H. Jackson and Stanley Wood as wells as a poem entitled "South Cheyenne Canon" by Bell Hunt. Following description of South Cheyenne Canon is useful information for visitors including its location methods of arriving at the canon admission pricing to the canon being 50 cents for adults and 25 cents on Sundays with a season family ticket of $4.50. Numerous black and white photographs to include pictures of Pillars of Hercules Devil's Slide Prospect Dome the road to Seven Falls Seven Falls Juanita Falls Bridal Veil Falls etc. Wrappers lightly soiled and with one tiny closed tear to bottom edge of one page. Xinjiang or Beijing: N.p. 1969. Soft cover. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Original stapled-stitched covers. 4to. 26 x 19 cm. In Uyghur with Arabic letters. 48 p. ills. Very small tears on extremities of the first two pages pages are slightly age-toned otherwise a very good copy. Extremely rare Uyghur edition of the second issue from 1969 published as a key propaganda organ of the Maoist Chinese Communist Party specifically targeting Uyghur Muslims living in China. This issue features seven articles and includes a portrait of Mao Zedong depicted within a shining sun. The head title on the first four pages "Neng Ali Yolyoruq" i.e. From July to October mirrors that of the original Chinese edition of the same issue. Although we could not find any information about the Uyghur edition in available sources the Chinese issues of this journal were published during the Great Leap Forward era beginning in 1958 until its final issue in 1988. It was produced by the Chinese Communist Party Central Committee and was one of China's main publication organs of the time alongside People's Daily Guangming Daily and People's Liberation Army Daily. The journal succeeded an earlier publication titled Xuexi Study and was renamed Red Flag by Mao Zedong. Chen Boda served as its editor and the journal became a critical media outlet during the Cultural Revolution. Until 1958 the Red Flag was freely distributed in Hong Kong and Southeast Asia but following the enforcement of the Undesirable Publications Ordinance which banned "undesired" foreign publications its circulation dropped from 5000 to 3000 copies. In the 1960s Red Flag temporarily ceased publication resuming in 1968 as a biweekly. It later transitioned to a monthly schedule continuing until 1979 and was published bi-monthly from 1980 until its closure in 1988. The journal focused on theoretical arguments supported by the Communist Party and included articles on the Party's perspectives regarding Communist movements in other countries. In May 1988 Chinese officials announced that Red Flag would cease publication. Its final issue appeared in June 1988 and it was succeeded by Qiushi Chinese: Seeking Truth. As of November 2024 a sole entry in the OCLC 416946773 in the University of London School of Oriental and African Studies. <br/> <br/> N.p. paperback

Reputedly after LaVey had these printed he didn't like them so they were never distributed.
