Printed by the well known Harold McGrath at the Hampshire Typothetae in Massachusetts. In a tan dustjacket that has creases to the top edges light fading and small tears to top edge and bottom of spine. The cloth binding has a few spots of fading on both covers. "The Carey Act of 1894 led to the creation of the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation which initiated many irrigation projects by authorizing the federal government to contract with the states for arid land reclamation. The State of Oregon authorized entrepreneurs to build and operate canal systems for profit. The right of agricultural users to the water were provisional until irrigation actually began producing crops as provided by the Carey Act. On June 30 1950 the State of Oregon decreed that the Carey Act had provided ample time for interested water users to have staked a water rights claim and ended the eligibility opt-in period to receive irrigation water." "The Deschutes Irrigation and Power Company Canal is significant as a component of the first large-scale irrigation project in Central Oregon. Built by the Deschutes Irrigation and Power Company the canal was one of two early irrigation facilities constructed to irrigate desert land for prospective settlers in the central Oregon region in the early twentieth century. This initial canal system was instrumental in the establishment of the city of Bend Oregon and its surrounding communities. Because of the size of the Deschutes Irrigation and Power Company Canal project and the necessity of constructing it in an area of solid basalt subsurface conditions the surveying construction and operation of the company were substantial engineering feats for the period." Lots offered from 40 to 160 acres with perpetual water rights for the land. "Under this contract the company agrees with the settler to bring the water in ditches to the land of each purchaser and the company is to keep up all repairs on the ditches etc. being allowed to collect $1 per acre per annum for the irrigable acres as a maintenance fee from the holder of land." Offers an extract from a report of the State Land Board which claims that the board inspected flumes and ditches and was pleased. Offers an extract from Bulletin No. 1 Oregon State Board of Health which explains good water means good soil and good soil means good crops. Information about the canals the soil the climate advantages of irrigation prices of fencing lumber railroads wages of carpenters approximately $3 per day information on where the land are located and how they can be reached. Double page map at center entitled "State of Oregon Free Land in Crook County that can be secured by paying the cost of irrigation as fixed by the Oregon State Land Board." Paris: N.p. 1920. Collected archives of 40 vintage photographs of notorious vaudeville performers Rosie and Jenny Dolly known professionally as The Dolly Sisters taken throughout the 1910s and 1920s. Consisting of ten small archives of photographs assiduously assembled over a period of time with multiple photographers' stamps and signatures on the versos and rectos respectively. <br /> <br /> The collection represents a veritable who's who of portrait photographers of the early twentieth century including Walery Ruben Sobol Apeda Studio The Campbell Studio Frank Foulsham and A.C. Banfield Ira D. Schwarz and James Abbe. Many have been SIGNED directly by the photographers in manuscript pencil on the rectos in addition to the photographer's stamp on the verso. Five photographs note the name of Paris Plaisirs an early French music and dance magazine on the bottom right corners of the rectos. <br /> <br /> Especially notable in the collection is a photograph credited to Walery that has been INSCRIBED by the sisters on the bottom right corner of the recto: "To Charlotte with good wishes / Dolly Sisters."<br /> <br /> The collection spans the 1910s and 1920s the height of the sisters' popularity with photographs of the pair in the studio onstage and at home although the balance show the sisters performing sporting a variety of outlandish bedazzled costumes. One striking photograph taken to promote the 1916 play "His Bridal Night" shows the sisters with long dark hair about four years before they got the bobbed haircuts for which they became known. The collection also includes several photographs of the sisters at home together evidently taken around the holidays sitting in front of the Christmas tree applying makeup at a large vanity mirror and relaxing with their pets. <br /> <br /> Born in Hungary in 1892 twin sisters Jancsi and Roszika Deutsche moved to America with their family in the early 1900s. Urged on by their mother a former dancer the twins began their performing careers in Boston in 1906 at the age of 13 a performance that purportedly earned them the sobriquet "The Dollies" for their delicate features and perfectly matched proportions. The nickname stuck and the pair would rise through the vaudeville and Broadway ranks as teenagers eventually Americanizing their names to Jenny and Rosie. By 1911 the twins were star attractions in the Ziegfeld Follies aided more by their vampish good looks lively personalities and glamorous personas than any uncommon theatrical talent. <br /> <br /> The sisters would go on to make a fortune touring famed European dance halls and appeared in a few early silent films but quickly realized that engaging the interests of wealthy lovestruck benefactors was a far easier and more rewarding way to earn a living. Rosie and Jenny kept an awe-inspiring string of wealthy patrons in their back pockets including Daily Express owner Max Beaverbrook Diamond Jim Brady William Randolph Hearst and The Prince of Wales. In 1922 the sisters signed a six-week contract to appear at the Hotel Royal in Deauville where their nightly scores at the casino tallied in the millions launching an insatiable appetite for gambling. Their excursions to the casinos at Cannes and Deauville were legendary largely funded by department store magnate Harry Selfridge. <br /> <br /> As the Jazz Age progressed into the Great Depression the sisters faced a slow decline in popularity losing both lovers and husbands while their business ventures began to fail. In 1933 Jenny's face and body was mutilated in a car accident after which she sold her vast jewel collection and burned through her fortunes in an attempt to repair her appearance through costly medical operations ultimately committing suicide out of despair in 1941. Two years later Rosie made $52500 by selling the rights to a film adaptation of their lives starring Betty Grable and June Haver but the film was a failure and Rosie would attempt suicide in 1962 before dying in 1970 of heart failure. <br /> <br /> An extraordinary collection documenting the rise of two of the biggest stars of the early twentieth century perhaps the earliest celebrities to be "famous only for being famous" seen through the eyes of some of the most important portrait photographers of the period. <br /> <br /> Photographs ranging in size from 4.25 x 6 inches to 12 x 17 inches. Generally Near Fine with occasional faint age toning and brief wear at the corners. N.p. unknown

Undated c. 1835. 4to: 3 pp. Good though creased and spotted with pinholes and a couple of closed tears. Text clear and entire. The seven rules over forty-four lines cover the first leaf of the bifolium. The list of twelve lady members beginning with 'Miss Bray' and ending with 'Miss Whitten' is on the recto of the second leaf with the address 'The rules of the working Society 1835 &c Miss Griffin' on the reverse. An important and significant document describing the rules of a very early Dorcas Society Isle of Man Douglas Dorcas Society estd 1834 - these rules differ from those of the Douglas Dorcas Society. A Dorcas Society is a local group of people originally women usually based in a church with a charitable mission of providing clothing to the poor. The original society was founded in the vestry of the Wesleyan Chapel Douglas Isle of Man on December 1 1834 in thanks for the town's being spared during an outbreak of cholera. The poorer families in town had their clothes and bedding destroyed as part of the effort to prevent the disease. Today there are other Dorcas societies around the world providing clothing and other physical needs. Undated [c. 1835]. hardcover

Well-illustrated with half-tones from photographs. Front cover partly over-printed in red with 1912 performance announcement. Some old small paper mounting strips along fold line; general folds; short closed tears along fore-edge of both leaves; very good.</p> <p>A white couple on the speaking and Chautauqua circuits Albert and Martha Gale billing themselves as remarkable musicians dress up as native Americans and perform “authentic†songs and stories per their interpretation.</p> <p>In this promotional piece or circular issued by their management company The Eastern Lyceum Bureau of Boston the Gale’s stage-set is shown cluttered with a disparate display of Native American artifacts. The Gales are shown in a variety of Native American costumes. Though the presentation may have been jumbled or without context Gale’s performance had some scholarship behind it:</p> <p>"Mr. Gale has worked among the Indians and has acquired a proficiency in the singing of their songs and the playing of their instruments that has won their admiration. His many transcriptions of the songs of the American Indian and especially of Puget Sound and Pacific Coast tribes have gained for him national recognition as a leading authority on the music of the American aborigine. Their collection of musical instruments is one of the largest and finest in the world. He was for several years at the head of the musical department of the University of Washington. p2"</p> <p>A description here of their performance indicates the Gale respected Native American music and was himself inspired by it: “Mr. Gale was compelled to write his own music by listening to the song of the Red Men and recording them.†p3 </p> <p>Overprinting on the cover of this program suggests they performed on college campuses as well. The overprinting announces a specific performance: “Class of 1912 Lecture Course Hotel Fullerton Hall Wednesday Eve Feb’y 28†the year “1912†added in manuscript.</p> <p>“Albert and Martha Gale veteran chautauqua lecturers…were careful to distance their lecture from the novelty performances present on the circuits and also from medicine and Wild West shows. Albert Gale was billed as ‘the ethnologist of music’. The Gales advertised their lecture as ‘instructive’ ‘full of life and action without resort to claptrap’ and ‘not the usual ‘Wild West’ type of Indian entertainment.’â€Â¹</p> <p>Note. 1. Here they are seen posing with their instruments and lyric sheets.</p> <p>Offering “vivacious entertainment†was this trio’s objective and this promotional piece or circular issued by their management company The Eastern-Empire Lyceum Bureau goes through great lengths to present the women’s musical background and training.</p> <p>Banjoist Hazel Grace Browne a graduate of Shaftesbury School of Expression of Baltimore could “sing the rare old Southern melodies…as only a child of the South can interpret them.†Adele Hoes learned her mandolin from Leland H. Powers; her voice training with Madame Cassavaunt and in the Grand Opera School in New York. Lyric soprano Florence King “studied several years at the New England Conservatory—voice under Shirly and Lyric and Dramatization under Guilbert.â€</p> <p>Newspaper reviews from throughout New England and upstate New York are printed on the back cover. A contemporary pencil annotation beneath the group portrait of The Eastern Girls announces a concert performance at an unspecified location: “Town Hall Fri. Eve. Dec. 4 1914. Generally two on one leaf each ca. 16.5 x 10.8 cm; a few double-sized then single and all tissue-guarded. Red pebbled cloth with gilt title on the front board. = A rare work with fine accurate illustrations mainly by H.N. Wandrekar who also illustrated Salim Ali's The Book of Indian Birds; first published in the Journal of the Bombay Natural History Society and "now bound in book form for the convenience of members of this Society as a handy volume of reference" from the foreword. This may actually be regarded as a fore runner of Salim Ali's work. Spine and fore edges taped. As usual with books from the tropics there is some insect-related damage and dampstaining to the boards narrowly affecting the final cardboard sheets but apart from some very light foxing the plates are all undamaged and clean. In fair condition on aged and worn paper with short closed tears at edges of folds. An interesting perspective on the British aviation industry from what Dr T. R. Bromund of Yale University has described as 'the industrial wing of the Empire lobby'. The opening paragraph reads: 'Owing to the recent resignation of the entire Board with one exception of the British Overseas Airways Corporation the public has become dimly aware that British Air Transport is facing a crisis but as yet has little or no idea of the magnitude of the issues involved. It cannot be expected to grasp the inescapable truth that on the result of the handling of these issues may depend the whole future of British Overseas Trade and consequently of the way of life in these Islands. This is no exaggeration as we shall show in the opening paragraphs.' What follows is a brief 'history of British Air Transport since Air Transport became an accomplished fact' the author's contention being that Britain 'finished the last war with a Fighting Air Fleet vastly superior to any other in the world' and that this was 'immediately cut to a mere skeleton and it never seems to have occurred to the Government of the day to regard the air as of the smallest important from a Civil point of view.' After this section on 'Early Struggles' there sections headed 'An Imperial Basis' 'Vital Issues' 'Wanted - A Man' 'The Freedom of the Air' 'Looking Ahead' 'The Sea and the Air' and 'Now'. The author's contention is that 'The Empire which depends for its very existence on military co-operation at the present moment will in the future depend equally on commercial co-operation.' Typed or in manuscript Quarter cloth marbled boards that is hard covers plus pp. 64 of unrelated presumably ELCA minutes manuscript in German dated 1904-1914 plus the Sunday School Convention minutes pp. 68. A hiatus covering the years of World War One follows after which is the typescript of the Minutes of the First Sunday School Convention held in Adelaide 28 and 29 September 1921. The years 1922-1927 were also held in Adelaide. The venue of the eighth convention is unclear as a pencilled note on the first of four blank pages indicates that these minutes are in possession of Pastor Ey and were never included. Sessions 1930-1936 took place at Ambleside Tweedvale Eudunda Adelaide Balaklava and Lobethal. An unparalleled insight into the educational methods and reach of the Lutheran Church in South Australia in which the most eminent Lutherans as well as a myriad of teachers sought to instill the love and fear of God into the youthful Lutherans of the day. Cloth and marbled boards worn; a typed addendum at the foot of page 4 of the first Minutes has been torn with some loss; otherwise very good. hardcover

Leaf between pp 241 and 294 reads: "Chapter V of this report as well as the conclusions based there which related to Colonel Wyman have been omitted in accordance with the statement of the Secretary of War dated August 29 1945." Toning and mild soiling to wrappers rear wrapper detached but present; contents clean and sound. Advance issue of the first report on how the disaster at Pearl Harbor unfolded and why the United States was caught unprepared. The members of the Board were General George Grunert Major Henry D. Russell Major Walter H. Frank Colonel Charles W. West Colonel Harry A. Toulmin and Major Henry C. Clausen. They were appointed to "ascertain and report facts relating to the attack made by Japanese Armed Forces upon the territory of Hawaii on 7 December 1941" and much of the evidence they gathered is presented here. Among their conclusions: The attack on Pearl Harbor "was daring well-conceived and well-executed and caught the defending forces practically unprepared to meet it or to minimize its destructiveness." The extent of the disaster was due to the failure of the Commanding General of the Hawaiian Department to alert his command for war and to the War Department for failing to keep him apprised of developments in U.S.-Japanese negotiations. The report also names serveral individuals in positions of authority and details their errors and failures most of which relate to inadequate communication to subordinates resulting in a failure to act and lack of preparedness. unknown

Pückler-Muskau was the first of five children of Count Carl Ludwig Hans Erdmann Pückler and the Countess Clementine of Callenberg who gave birth to him at age 15. He was born at Muskau Castle now Bad Muskau in Upper Lusatia then ruled by the Electorate of Saxony. He served for some time in the Saxon "Garde du Corps" cavalry regiment at Dresden and afterwards traveled through France and Italy often by foot. In 1811 after the death of his father he inherited the Standesherrschaft barony of Muskau. Joining the war of liberation against Napoleon I of France he left Muskau under the General Inspectorate of his friend the writer and composer Leopold Schefer. As an officer under the Duke of Saxe-Weimar he distinguished himself in the field. Later he was made military and civil governor of Bruges. After the war he retired from the army and toured Great Britain for a year moving with ease in aristocratic circles. He attended plays at His Majesty's Theatre Haymarket and Drury Lane admiring performances of Eliza O'Neill studied parkland landscaping and in Wales visited the Ladies of Llangollen in 1828. In 1822 in compensation for certain privileges which he resigned he was raised to the rank of "Fürst"1 by King Frederick William III of Prussia. In 1817 he had married the Dowager Countess Lucie von Pappenheim née von Hardenberg daughter of Prussian statesman Prince Karl August von Hardenberg; the marriage was legally dissolved after nine years in 1826 though they did not separate and remained on amicable terms. Mahbuba ca. 1840 He returned to England in 1828 where he became something of a celebrity in London society spending nearly two years in search of a wealthy second wife capable of funding his ambitious gardening schemes. In 1828 his tours took him to Ireland notably to the seat of Daniel O'Connell in Kerry. On his return home he published a not entirely frank account of his time in England. The book was an enormous success in Germany and also caused a great stir when it appeared in English as Tour of a German Prince 183132. Pueckler's name carved in the Great Enclosure of Musawwarat Being a daring character he subsequently traveled in Algeria Tunisia Egypt and Sudan and explored ancient Nubia. He is documented as having visiting the site of Naqa in modern-day Sudan in 1837. He also visited the nearby site of Musawwarat es-Sufra and in both places he carved his name in the stone of the temples. In the same year at the slave market of Cairo he purchased an Ethiopian Oromo girl in her early teens whom he named Mahbuba "the beloved". He took her to Asia Minor Greece and Vienna where he introduced her to European high society but Mahbuba developed tuberculosis and died in Muskau in 1840. Later he would write that she was "the being I loved most of all the world." He then lived at Berlin and Muskau where he spent much time in cultivating and improving the still existing Muskau Park. In 1845 he sold this estate and although he afterwards lived from time to time at various places in Germany and Italy his principal residence became Schloss Branitz near Cottbus where he laid out another splendid park. Politically he was a liberal supporting the Prussian reforms of Freiherr vom Stein. This together with his pantheism and his colourful lifestyle made him slightly suspect in the society of the Biedermeier period. In 1863 he was made a hereditary member of the Prussian House of Lords and in 1866 he attended by then an octogenarian the Prussian general staff in the Austro-Prussian War. He was decorated for his 'actions' at the Battle of Königgratz even though the then 80-year old Prince had slept throughout the day. In 1871 he died at Branitz. Since human cremation was illegal at that time for religious reasons he resorted to an ingenious evasion of traditional burial; he left instructions that his heart be dissolved in sulphuric acid and that his body should be embedded in caustic soda caustic potash and caustic lime. Thus on February 9 1871 his denatured remains were buried in the Tumulus - an earth pyramid surrounded by a parkland lake at Branitzer Castle. Dying childless the castle and estate passed to the heir to the Princely title his nephew Heinrich von Pueckler with money and the inventory to his niece Marie von Pachelbl-Gehag née von Seydewitz. The literary estate of the Prince was inherited by writer Ludmilla Assing who wrote his biography and posthumously published correspondence and diaries unpublished during his lifetime. Beide Parks und die seiner Schüler besonders Eduard Petzolds 181591 machten international bis nach Nordamerika Schule 4 und zählen bis heute zu den besonderen Höhepunkten der Landschaftsgestaltung im 19. Jahrhundert in Europa. Was beide Parks besonders kostspielig machte war der Umstand dass Pückler für ihre Anlage riesige Mengen Mutterboden aus weiter entfernten Gegenden auf Ochsenkarren heranschaffen ließ da der sandige Untergrund für den geplanten Bewuchs ungeeignet war. Darüber hinaus gelang es ihm erstmals ausgewachsene Bäume zu verpflanzen. Er ließ sie auf einem speziellen Fuhrwerk heranfahren und den Boden am neuen Standort baumgerecht präparieren. So gelang es ihm sein berühmt gewordenes Konzept der Blickachsen schon bei der Anlage der Parks zu verwirklichen. Pückler der seine Möglichkeiten der Besichtigung des englischen Landhauses und den Zutritt zu den Gartenanlagen in England zum Teil nur persönlich zugebilligt erhalten hatte und zu schätzen wusste beschloss den freien Zugang für seine Landschaftsgärten und weitete ihn auf jedermann aus.
