The page following p.xi on the verso of the leaf is blank and this is followed by three unpaginated leaves carrying a six-page 'Act of Parliament in Favours sic of the Maiden Hospital Founded by the Company of Merchants and Mary Erskine.' This 'Act' which precedes the 46 pages of the 'Rules and Constitutions' would not appear to be present in all copies. Scarce all but a handful of the copies on COPAC being facsimiles. Heavenly Father I thine unworthy Creature do prostrate myself before thy divine Majesty - requesting that thou wilt hear my prayer which I now offer up to thee for all those of my fellow creatures who are in the poor House - Have mercy upon them - put it in the hearts of others who have the power that they may also have the will to bring about a reformation therein for it is a sad thing that so many are without that spiritual care and instruction which they ought to have to fit them both for this World and the next -'. Without free-endpapers terminal leaf of Vol. IV working loose. The initial four volumes of an annual compilation of original riddles word games puzzles and suggestions for charades. The publication ultimately ran to only five volumes the final issue appearing in 1801. This may in part have been due to plagiarism of which the prefatory remarks to volume four complain: 'Several of the annual pocket-books have made free to plunder the Masquerade without license and without acknowledgment. In one case of these publications in particular we have detected no fewer than three instances of this plagiarism; which are palmed upon the public under fictitious signatures as original productions'. ‎Cleveland: The May Company 1900. Sewn binding. Good. Quarto unpaginated about 30pp. illustrated. In good condition in the publisher's printed sewn wrappers. Spine ends a bit frayed and a faint stain to the top edge affecting several leaves but no text. A children's book dedicated on the title page "to the children of Cleveland" with some Christmas- and Christian-themed religious tales and illustrations. The May Company one of Cleveland's storied department stores alongside Higbee's and Halle's was founded in 1898 and acquired its iconic building on Cleveland's Public Square in 1914. The rear wrap of this volume does not depict that building so we can reasonably date this publication to ca. 1900-1914 the style also points to this conclusion. We found no copies of this highly ephemeral publication in commerce or in libraries though it's possible there are a few similar examples lying around in old Cleveland basements. A delightful relic of Cleveland on the cusp of its peak economic power and opulence. The May Company unknown‎

Creased fore-edge damp-stained several small holes to water-marked final leaf early inked ownership inscription to blank verso: 'Donald Williamson Culloden near Inverness'. A rare survival of the sole edition of an anonymous epistolary poem of unrequited love that from the opening couplet is evidently the work of a rejected suitor to the unidentified addressee: 'Fair maiden once the hope of 's life / Fair woman now and happy 's wife'. The Critical Review Vol. XI 1761 was succinct in its praise their entire appraisal consisting of only four words 'Elegant moral and poetical'. The Monthly Review Vol. 24 1761 was less kind and a tad more verbose: 'Middling poetry and common-place sentiments as old as the first satire in Horace'. ‎London: Printed by W. Woodfall 1779. First Edition. Newspaper. Good. Newspaper. Single issue removed from a larger gathering. Approximately 18" x 11.5". 4 pages. Three columns. Paper is closely trimmed on the top and side margins with minor loss of print. Print is faded in areas with a few spots to the paper. This issue devotes 3 pages to the Battles and Siege of Savannah in the fall of 1779.<br /> <br /> The first page has two columns regarding the Siege. An article titled "Extract of a Letter from Major-General Prevost commanding his Majesty's forces in the Province of Georgia to the Right Honourable Lord George Germain one of his Majesty's Principal Secretaries of State dated Savannah November 1 1779: received by Captain Shaw Aid de Camp to Major General Prevost. Prevost states ".the very unexpected visit of the Count d' Estaing to this coast with powerful a squadron and considerable body of land troops when known would have excited some uneasiness for our safety; it is with very sincere pleasure I do my self the honour to inform you that we have seen the last of the French fleet this day depart we hope off the coast - got them and their American allies off our hands." <br /> <br /> A daily account of the events is printed on the first page from September 4 to the 24th. The second page is completely covered with the Battle and has entries from September 25 to October 11. Between October 11 and the 18th Prevost writes about removing the women and children to safety; about the fog; Battle lines; cannon fire; the number of forces lost on the enemy side; a truce to bury the dead and care for the wounded including d' Estaing and General Pulaski who later died from his wounds on the 18th etc. The paper also includes 10 translated letters from Prevost Estaing and one letter signed by General Lincoln and d' Estaing. On page 3 is a list of the causalities of the battle. <br /> <br /> The American-French Allied forces were badly beaten at the Siege of Savannah and the British continued occupied Savannah until the end of the Revolution. From American Battlefields dot org:<br /> <br /> In 1778 British policymakers and strategists decided to refocus their efforts on the southern colonies where they believed the crown would enjoy the support of a large Loyalist population. As part of that effort a British army under Lieutenant Colonel Archibald Campbell captured the city of Savannah Georgia on December 29 1778<br /> .<br /> In the fall of 1779 the Americans were determined to take the city back. American forces in the region numbering between 5000 and 7000 men were based in Charleston South Carolina under the command of General Benjamin Lincoln. Lincoln recognized that to recapture Savannah he would need assistance from the French military. On September 3 he learned that Charles Hector Comte d'Estaing was en-route to Savannah bringing with him a fleet of warships and 4000 French soldiers. On September 11 Lincoln left Charleston with a force of his own intent on linking up with d'Estaing. Arriving first d'Estaing began offensive operations against the city on September 16. When fully assembled the Allied force numbered over 5000 men. Defending Savannah was a force of more than 3000 men under the command of General Augustine Prevost. <br /> <br /> On the morning of October 9 the Franco-American Allies launched a major assault. Fog shrouded the battlefield impeding forward progress. Troops became lost in the swamps fronting the Spring Hill Redoubt the Allied objective. d'Estaing had selected the Spring Hill Redoubt under the mistaken impression that it was lightly defended by local Loyalist militia. In reality the Loyalist militia was backed by battle-hardened British Regulars. When the fog lifted the French lines were fully exposed crumbling in the face of a withering and incessant fire from the redoubt's defenders. d'Estaing himself was wounded twice while personally leading the attack. Mortally wounded in the assault was the Polish cavalry mastermind Casimir Pulaski who had done much to shape the mounted forces of the Continental Army. He was shot while trying to lead his horseman through a temporary breach in the British line. During the attack on the Spring Hill Redoubt the Allies lost roughly 1000 men. The British suffered only 150 casualties.<br /> <br /> An hour after leading his forces forward d'Estaing called off the attack recognizing its futility. A week later the French commander sailed away leaving Lincoln behind and the Franco-American Alliance strained. On October 18 Lincoln lifted the siege. Publisher's original red cloth binding with gilt lettering to spine and upper cover. From the library of the "Newman School of Missions" of Thabor Jerusalem with their book label to front pastedown. The Newman School of Missions was a historical institution located at a place called Thabor in Jerusalem British Palestine active at least during the 1920s to 1940s. Some rubbing and fading to cloth slightly cocked contents clean and unmarked save for one ink scribble to lower portion of page 95 generally a pleasant copy in the original cloth. An important and uncommon English translation of the Mu'allaqat 'The Suspended Odes' one of the most celebrated compilations of pre-Islamic poetry. The seven poems by Imru' al-Qais Tarafa Zuhayr Labid 'Antara Ibn Shaddad 'Amr ibn Kulthum and Harith ibn Hilliza are believed to have been hung in the Kaaba although many scholars have argued the title is less literal referring instead to suspension in the mind. Due to its renown the Mu'allaqat attracted several important commentaries by leading scholars of early Arabic poetry. This edition is translated line by line with notes alternative readings historical context etc. by Capt. F.E. Johnson. The New York Tribune is soliciting summer resorts in the Hudson Valley the Catskills and surrounding areas to py for advertising space in the newspaper. They claim "The New York Tribune reaches a larger number of prosperous people who are able and willing to pay good prices for Summer Board than any other Journal in America." Cost is advertised at $3.00 per line for 30 insertions either every day or four times a week. Several specimens are provided and the Tribune also advertises subscription costs for the resorts who should be keeping the paper in stock! at the rear. Comprising of a rich selection of oral histories of the Indigenous Peoples of the North accounts of the Oblate missionaries in their efforts to convert them to Christianity much detail on their customs hunting and fishing techniques "Arctic Mission Diaries" as written by the priests recounting their interactions with their flock their Indigenous neighbours and their colleagues. An exceedingly scarce offering of thirty-four issues of this Indigenous Christian-centered periodical as published by The Oblate Fathers of The Hudson Bay Vicariate bound together in one volume and comprising of the following issues: No.1 Oct. 1944 - No.3 Oct. 1945 "The Link"; No. 4 Feb. 1946 "Eskimo"; Vol. 1 May 1946 - Vol. 30 September/December 1953 "Eskimo". Note that in February 1946 "The Link" was renamed "Eskimo" with the subsequent issue of May 1946 being designated as "Volume 1". Thus there are four numbers and thirty volumes present for a combined total of thirty-four issues. We were unable to locate copies of "The Link" No's. 1-3 in commerce. Indeed the only copies of "The Link" which we can locate are the originals in the Stefansson Collection and copies on microfilm at Marquette University. Furthermore No. 4 Feb 1946 titled "Eskimo" appears to be an exceedingly scarce issue. Library and Archives Canada incorrectly states that Volume 1 of "Eskimo" is the fourth issue being that the first three issues No's. 1-3 were published as "The Link". Other national repositories such as the Catalogue of the National Library of Australia make the same error. No mention of the publication of No. 4 "Eskimo" in February 1946 is made in the "Arctic Bibliography" Vol. 1 - 4720 "A Bibliography of Manitoba" Morley - p.256 or "A Bibliography of Canadian Inuit Periodicals" Rankin - p.78 / p.158. The introduction to No. 4 "Eskimo" states "Our Missionary Bulletin "The Link" will henceforth bear the more suggestive title "Eskimo"." It appears as though confusion has arisen due to the fact that the first issue which was titled "Eskimo" retained the numbering of "The Link" and it wasn't until the second issue of "Eskimo" that the volume numbering began. Therefore as a whole there are 4 "numbers" from Oct. 1944 - Feb. 1946 and 84 "volumes" from May 1946 - Fall / Winter 1970. The only record which correctly acknowledges this which we have uncovered is the original collection at Dartmouth College. Neat ink name to head of the ffep. Numbers 1-4 and Volume 4 are copies of the original periodical from the Stefansson Collection at Dartmouth College Library. Volume 1 is from the Library of the National Museum of Canada with one stamp to top wrapper; the only other library stamp being a small call number to the final page of the final volume. One 4" closed tear to page 7 of Volume 20 and one smaller 2" closed tear from pages 7 - 10 of Volume 26. With the exceptions noted above the overwhelming majority of the issues are entirely without blemish. Although volumes of "Eskimo" even the early ones have been relatively common in the marketplace runs such as our offering are exceedingly uncommon. ‎The Old Poor Law in the late Nineteenth Century. Anonymous Manuscript Document calling in forthright terms for the amending of 'The Plan of the Poor Laws of England' to weed out 'the loose Profligate and those who do not like work'.‎

‎Without place or date. English late eighteenth century. 2pp foolscap 8vo. On the rectos of the leaves of a bifolium. In fair condition lightly aged and worn. On laid paper with indistinct watermark. The context of the document with the capitalisation and spelling 'mechanick' 'shou'd' 'Publick' 'tyed down' 'lookt' 'Profitt' points to a late eighteenth-century origin certainly before the Speenhamland System and Michael Nolan's 1805 'Treatise of the Laws for the Relief and Settlement of the Poor'. No title or heading. A forthright document whose rhetorical tone suggests that it was intended for public delivery. The author asserts that '3 fourths of the People now upon the poor List are such poor as shou'd not be relieved Namely the loose Profligate and those who do not like work. If this is the Case the public loose sic near another Million by relieving so many who shou'd work'. The cost of poor relief he claims all 'falls upon the Landed Interest'. He does not however 'Wish that our Poor Laws were all abolish'd as amended that ever Man shou'd have a Liberty of living where he please'd which would be always where he could get a living best.' The document begins: 'The Plan of the Poor Laws of England tho Calculated upon the Principles of Humanity and Charity are far from answering the Salutary purposes intended. For tho the Lame the Blind the Impotent and Aged are amply provided for and I might add the Drones and those who do not chose to work. Yet the Poor Labourer the little Farmer and the Mechanick are under great Restraints and Difficulties on Account of their Settlement being tyed down to a particular Parish where they find it very difficult to get their living and yet oftentimes cant get a Certificate to remove to another Parish where there is great Probability they may Have Work enough and live better.' The author expands on his view with reference to 'a poor Man who is not of ability to Rent 10£ P Ann' 'the Industrious who mean to Maintain Themselves by Labour' and 'the Interest of the Landed Man'. He notes the 'hardship' that 'lies upon the Man of Ability to Rent 10£ a Year' who 'removes from the Place of his Settlement and Rents 8 or 9 A Year in another Parish. He is there lookt upon as a sort of a Charge to that Parish as they cant Tax him to the Parish Rates without makeing him a Settlement and therfore oftentimes procure him to be removed'. Elsewhere he asks: 'Do not we now and then see a Shop keeper in a Country Village who is daily pillaging the Poor by selling his Good to them in very small Quantities at 50 P Cent Profitt during the Time of the Execution of that Office turn Advocate for the poor and plead for an Increase of their Allowance and this I don't wonder at as the more he can get Allowed them the more Profitt comes To his Till'. Towards the end he states: 'We all know that the Poor only live from Hand to Mouth that when Corn is at the Dearest they make a Shift to live and when it is Cheapest they save nothing at the Weeks End if it is very low they will perhaps work only 4 Days out of 6. they have no Idea of laying any thing by and I fear what Incourages them in their way of Thinking is the certainty they have of themselves and Family being maintained at the Expence of the Parish when Sickness or old Age comes on'. He states: 'I Believe there is no Nation in the World have got a poor Law but England and I will venture to Assert that there is no Nation where Charity and Benevolence more abound'. He ends with the proposal 'That one publick Workhouse Infirmary and House of Maintainance should be Erected in the Center of Every County where all the Sick Lame and Aged should be sent whenever they can't take Care of themselves to be there maintained taken Care of & set to work as their Particular Circumstances require.'
