Comprising three card menus five seating plans a list of 'Resident Members' and a newspaper cutting. The Oxford New Tory Club was a university club to promote and discuss Tory principles founded in 1861. Its records are in the Bodleian Library. ONE to THREE: menus for the years 1912 1913 and 1914. Each a bifolium on card of 3pp. 12mo. The first two 1912 and 1913 are to 'The Annual Dinner of the Canning and Chatham Clubs at the Randolph Hotel Oxford and the third for 'the Canning Chatham and New Tory Clubs at the New Masonic Buildings Oxford Saturday June 6th 1914. Toasts involve Lord Robert Cecil Harry Chaplin Lord Balfour of Burleigh Viscount Woolmer. The seating plans are from 1910 1911 3 1913 and 1914. FOUR to EIGHT: Five seating plans 1910-1914. A vintage advertising brochure featuring women's fashions including Silk Frocks Easter Hats Spring Coats and Sportswear along with pricing. In 195 John Joseph Haggarty opened the New York Cloak and Suit House a small exclusive women’s clothing store. He did so by securing a building on Broadway in the center of the Los Angeles business district and there laid the foundation for one of the most successful businesses in the commercial history of the city. Having become an esteemed leader in the industry after just a few short years he expanded his business with the opening of Paris Cloak and Suit House. He and his wife made annual trips to New York and Paris to bring the current fashion trends to the West Coast. When this venture had proved a success due in large measure to his expert knowledge of the business Haggarty purchased a controlling interest in another large house known as the Paris Cloak and Suit House. Into it he brought besides capital the wide experience and natural business ability which had made him a success in life. Some closed tears at fold lines; right margin chipped no text loss; an old mend touches one signature; fair to good.</p> <p>Certificate of election to The Philadelphia Society for Promoting Agriculture—the oldest agricultural society in the United States—issued to Henry Simpson as a “Resident Member.†An illustration by J.J. Barralet at the top engraved by William Harrison shows an idyllic farm scene with a farmer stacking hay a plough a harrow and the coat of arms of the society. The plough motif is repeated on the seal at the bottom of the certificate.</p> <p>The document is signed by U.S. District Court Judge Richard Peters 1744–1828 charter member and then-president of The Philadelphia Society for Promoting Agriculture. Peters was an officer of the Continental Congress and a delegate to the Congress of the Confederation. In 1776 Peters was made secretary of the Board of War; becoming a full member in 1777. Lawyer and abolitionist Roberts Vaux 1786–1836 signs as the society’s secretary.</p> <p>The newly elected member may be Henry Simpson 1790–1868 who wrote The Lives of Eminent Philadelphians now Deceased in 1859.</p> unknown‎

A 23 1/2" x 24 1/2" color lithograph pictorial Map of the Columbia River Basin. The map of the Columbia River Basin tracing the river’s course from British Columbia through Washington down into Oregon to the sea indicating all of the branch railroads off of the Columbia. One 13" x 35" map of the Wharves and Docks of the Port of Portland. One 21" x 31 1/2" map of the Mouth of Columbia River as of June 1911 with soundings and buoy positions noted. The Mouth of Columbia River map was a vital resource at the time as Columbia carries large amounts of siltneeding constant dredging and well known to be particularly treacherous to navigate. All three maps with minor closed tears at the creases and folds and one minor tear to the color lithograph map. Soiling to covers along with scraping and bumping to corners edges and spine. The title page was printed “Presbyterian Board of Publication No. 831 Chestnut Street†and corrected in pen to read “No. 1334 Chestnut Streetâ€. The Board acquired the property at 1334 Chestnut in 1854 so this pretty well dates the book. An interesting and comprehensive listing of this enormously popular and influential religious publishing house. Includes Music Books card tracts publications in German and French 12 mo. tracts as well as hundreds of edifying standard works. A nice copy in green blind-stamped cloth with gilt lettering. The front endpaper has adhered to the pastedown; we have not attempted to separate them. The rear hinge has archival repair. Very Good binding. Presbyterian Board of Publications unknown‎

Dante Gabriel Rossetti and William Michael Rossetti were two of the original members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood founded in 1848. The Rossetti brothers were central to the organization. This book prints selected correspondence that they had with friends and associates collected at the Ellen Clarke Bertrand Library at Bucknell University. The letters provide an inside view of the thoughts interests and activities of these two pivotal figures from the preface. Bound by Don Rash and Nicolyn Rosen in beautiful pink red and black marbled paper on the cover created by Iris Nevins with a burgundy cloth spine and rear cover. Title in silver to spine. Hand set in 14 pt. Van Dijck type and printed on Somerset Heavyweight paper. The two wood engravings by Linda Holmes were printed directly from the blocks. ‎Prussian Army 1810 Manuscript on paper watermarked 1810 a detailed table titled 'Present <Stat>ement of His Majesty the King of Prussia's Army'.‎

‎Circa 1810. Landscape folio leaf 32.5 x 40.5 cm 1 p. On paper watermarked 'JOHN HALL 1810'. Neatly ruled to make a complex detailed table in three columns of 31 rows each. The table has a central vertical fold with the left hand side of the reverse mounted on a leaf removed from an autograph album. In poor condition with around an eighth of the total area of the paper and text lacking mostly from the bottom right-hand corner. Despite the loss the table presumably prepared for the British War Office contains a mass of valuable information. The table begins under the heading 'Staff' with seven sections divisions including 'His Majesty's first Adjutant of Cavalry' and 'War Department'. Beneath this are the three columns each subdivided into 'Names' 'Brigades' 'Strong.' 'Year of form:' and 'Are formed out of'. The first column 'Cavalry' is complete with details of 'Cuirassiers' 'Dragoons' 'Hussars' 'Uhlans' and 'Horse Artillery'. First entry: 'Garde du Corps Brandenburgh 5 troops 1740. Formerly the 13th.' Second column 'Infantry with list of 27 'Regiments of the Line' followed by three rows of 'Riflem<en>'. Loss to text of all three of the latter and to 12 of the entries on the regiments. Third column headed 'Artillery' has four rows of details relating to the artillery followed by two rows of 'Brigade Adjutants' two rows of 'Officers of the Army' three rows of 'Additional Corps' and six rows of 'Formation of Grenadiers'. ‎1857. Boston The Atlantic Monthly 1857-1858. Octavo. IV 768 pages. Hardcover / Original Half-leather with gilt lettering on spine. Binding in poor but still good condition with some stronger signs of wear spine starting mild foxing throughout and some faded damp-staining to the outer paper-margins inside only. Endpaper Half-title and titlepage slightly detached. This is the very rare inaugural Atlantic Volume with a wonderful irish provenance possibly even a relation to Fitz-James O'Brien. The Atlantic is an American magazine and multi-platform publisher based in Washington D.C. It features articles on politics foreign affairs business and the economy culture and the arts technology and science. It was founded in 1857 in Boston as The Atlantic Monthly a literary and cultural magazine that published leading writers' commentary on education the abolition of slavery and other major political issues of that time. Its founders included Francis H. Underwood and prominent writers Ralph Waldo Emerson Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Harriet Beecher Stowe and John Greenleaf Whittier. James Russell Lowell was its first editor. During the 19th and 20th centuries the magazine also published the annual The Atlantic Monthly Almanac. Wikipedia _________________________________ O'Brien Fitz-James 1828–62 writer was born Michael Fitzjames O'Brien in Cork the only child of James O'Brien 1780–1839 county coroner and his wife Eliza daughter of Michael O'Driscoll of Baltimore Co. Cork. They were well off and lived at 58 South Mall Cork city. Eliza's father was a wealthy landowner from an old well established family and was known locally as ‘The O'Driscoll’. His grandson always called ‘Fitzjames’ which he later wrote as ‘Fitz-James’ was his sole heir. After James O'Brien's death c.1839 his widow a noted beauty married a wealthy Corkman De Courcy O'Grady. They settled in Castleconnell Co. Limerick and Fitzjames was educated privately and enjoyed an active sporting life. His first published poem was inspired by the famine and advocated escaping English tyranny by flight to America. Charles Gavan Duffy qv published it in The Nation 15 March 1845 under the caustic introduction: ‘This might be called The Coward's Resource’. Undeterred O'Brien continued to send in verse under pseudonyms such as ‘Heremon’ and ‘Fineen Dhuv’. His most celebrated poem was the romantic ‘I know a lake’ which appeared on 26 July 1845. Its unattributed inclusion in Edward Hayes's popular The ballads of Ireland 1855 ensured it lasting fame. From July 1848 he also contributed to the Cork Magazine and sent patriotic verse to the Irishman. O'Brien always claimed falsely to have attended TCD. He probably spent some time in France as he was fluent in the language. On his twenty-first birthday in 1849 he came into his inheritance of around £8000 and left for London. There he ran through his money in two years of luxurious living. He had work published in the Metropolitan and the Parlour magazines but later complained of the difficulty of breaking into literary London. His first story ‘The phantom light’ made good use of Irish peasant superstition and appeared in the Home Companion. Afterwards he seldom used Irish settings in his stories and turned his back on his earlier patriotism. American friends noted that he seemed ashamed of his nationality and was delighted when mistaken for an Englishman. After an unhappy love affair with the wife of an officer he left London penniless at the end of 1851 for New York. He never returned never again lived within his means and never again fell in love although he had numerous affairs. O'Brien's entrée into New York's literary scene was swift and successful. He first contributed to the Lantern a comic magazine established by a fellow Irishman the actor John Brougham qv. For this he provided an autobiographical sketch of himself as ‘The sentimental poet’: ‘of medium height with large eyes large nose and a head shaped like an isoceles triangle’ Wolle 37. This was a reference to his tiny chin caricatured by contemporary artists. Within months he was drama critic of the Saturday Press and by the end of the year was on the staff of the New York Daily Times to which he contributed stories poems literary reviews and essays. Other publications with which he was sporadically associated included Young Americans the Saturday Whig Review and the Atlantic Monthly. His play ‘A gentleman of Ireland’ – a picaresque tale of an Irishman in London – opened Christmas 1854 and was a resounding success. The role of Gabriel Fitzmaurice was one of Brougham's favourites and he revived it frequently. At one such revival O'Brien reviewed his own play as ‘a wonderfully crude production . . . the dialogue is sometimes smart but never witty . . . There is no characterisation everybody talks like everybody else’ Saturday Press 13 Nov. 1858. His most important connection was to the Harper brothers owners of Harpers’ Monthly and Harpers’ Weekly. To this he contributed his ‘Man about town’ column from January to September 1857. A gossipy exuberant account of his adventures in which he amusingly satirises his poverty it made him famous; his biographer Francis Wolle credits him with ‘initiating the column of personal comment . . . America's first columnist in the modern sense’ Wolle 133. However he was unable to sustain it for longer than nine months; though brilliant he was erratic and undisciplined. His friend the journalist R. H. Stoddard wrote: ‘No American writer ever had such chances of success as Fitzjames O'Brien and but one American writer Poe ever threw such chances away so recklessly’ New York Tribune 6 Mar. 1881. O'Brien was among the most colourful characters in the circle centred on Pfaff's Cellar tavern at 653 Broadway where a table seating thirty was permanently reserved for ‘bohemians’ including Henry Clapp Ada Clare and Walt Whitman who referred to O'Brien as very bright and the talk as very good. O'Brien always well dressed and generally well mannered got into brawls when drunk. He appeared thinly disguised in two novels of the period William North's The slave of the lamp 1855 and Bayard Taylor's John Godfrey's fortunes 1864. The three stories on which O'Brien's fame rests were written in 1858 and 1859. ‘The diamond lens’ deals with a man who commits murder to obtain the perfect lens. This enables him to see a sylph in a drop of water; when the water evaporates he goes mad. ‘What was it’ concerns an encounter with an invisible monster while ‘The wondersmith’ is about diabolic toys which eventually attack their creator. Cleverly blending scientific rationalism with gothic horror they electrified readers and are still anthologised. O'Brien was named ‘the Celtic Poe’. Hoffmann Dickens and Sheridan Le Fanu qv were other discernible influences while he foreshadowed de Maupassant and H. G. Wells. On the outbreak of civil war in 1861 he enlisted in the 7th Regiment of the New York National Guard. Anxious for active service in June he began recruiting for a New York volunteer regiment to be called the McClellan Rifles. Numbers failed to reach the minimum regimental requirement but in January 1862 he was taken on to the staff of Gen. Frederick W. Lander and departed for Western Virginia. His high spirits athleticism and ability to turn out marching songs made him a great favourite. He received honourable mention for his bravery at the battle of Bloomery Gap 13 February 1862 and three days later his audacious behaviour during a skirmish led to a shoulder wound. This was improperly treated and he died of tetanus in camp on 6 April 1862 . His body was brought back to New York and held in the vault of Greenwood cemetery until it was finally interred on 27 November 1874. A compilation with biographical sketch by his friend William Winter was published in 1881 and brought him back to public notice. Since then his stories have survived in anthologies of the supernatural. His poetry has been largely dismissed as facile and derivative. His 1940s Dictionary of American Biography entry characterises him as minor and more significant as a personality than a writer and he is not included in American National Biography 1999; but his work has proved stubbornly popular with niche audiences. He has been translated into French Japanese Spanish and Italian and a new American edition of his stories appeared in two volumes in 1988. His literary criticism was recently compiled in Fitz-James O'Brien: selected literary journalism 1852–1860 edited by Wayne R. Kime 2003. ‎Baghdad: Wizarat al-Kharijiyah = Ministry of Foreign Affairs 1961. Original printed wrappers stapled. 8vo. Arabic text. First edition of the second of two rare pamphlets published by the Iraqi government opposing the independence of Kuwait. The first pamphlet published in English and Arabic outlined Kuwait's historical connection to Iraq and analysed its "imperialist relations" with Britain. This second one in Arabic throughout prints the minutes of the Political Affairs Committee of the Arab League which met in Cairo on 20 July 1961 to consider Kuwait's request to join the League.Kuwait emerged as an independent state in June 1961 after sixty-two years as a British protectorate. With a new constitution it held its first parliamentary elections in 1963 thereby becoming the first Arab state in the Gulf to establish a parliament. Such political developments married with growing wealth and modernisations in health culture and finance helped to make Kuwait the most prosperous state in the Arabian Peninsula.The Iraqi government argued that the move toward independence was a continuation of Kuwait's relationship with Britain albeit under a new guise. Furthermore they felt that the historical links between Iraq and Kuwait entitled the former to control over the latter and one suspects a share of its growing wealth. This position partly detailed in the pamphlet led to a point of crisis with Iraq threatening invasion. To the relief of Kuwait the Iraqis were eventually deterred by the Arab League's promise of military opposition.The wrappers are a little dusty two thick black lines on the front wrapper seemingly erasing a stamp another stamp partially visible on the back wrapper most likely a bookseller's name and address "Baghdad" is legible. ‎San Francisco: Ralph Records 1972. Two color silkscreen prints measuring 14.5 x 15" intended to house two 7" records each. Near Fine with light wear to corners. One of the prints has been varnished by the publisher as issued; this varnish would cause all sort of problems often sticking to itself. One can see the artwork sullied as it was meant to be and unsullied. <br /> <p>The Santa Dog EP was the very first official release of The Residents and their label Ralph Records. An experimental pop album it was lo-fi and utilized tape loops long before this became a common musical practice. The album art by the design wing of The Residents Porno/Graphics which is to say the members of the group with imaginary "artist" hats on was meant to resemble a Christmas card from an insurance company so all four songs are titled after potential disasters that can befall one's home. It advertises The Residents' uncompleted film Vileness Fats. Copies were sent out gratis mostly including to celebrities such as Frank Zappa and Richard Nixon who refused his copy. It remains one of The Residents most accessible releases and the title track "Santa Dog" whatever its official name is is quite catchy-- recommended listening for any and all. ‎'WAR OFFICE 10th August 1859.' 'V General No. 469'. 5pp. folio. In very good condition on lightly-aged paper. Copies of this document were sent by the War Office to the officers commanding the various corps the Secretary of State considering that it would 'assist them in preparing Regulations for the government of the Corps under their Command'. For a full account of the subject see Hugh Cunningham's 'The Volunteer Force: A Social and Political History 1859-1908' 1975. The cover page has in its top left-hand corner: 'V General No. 469' and carries a table of contents. Preceding the rules is a page headed 'WAR OFFICE 10th August 1859' giving a list of the twelve committee members preceded by the statement: 'PROCEEDINGS of a COMMITTEE assembled by Order of the Secretary of State for War for the purpose of drafting model Rules and Regulations for the government of Volunteer Corps when not on actual Service and subject to Military discipline.' In the list that follows the President of the Committee is named as 'VISCOUNT RANELAGH South Middlesex Rifles' and the first three members are: 'EARL SPENCER Althorp Rifles. MAJOR CLIFFORD Victoria Rifles. MR. J. H. ORDE Yarmouth Rifles.' The 24 rules follow over three pages the last page paginated 6 and include: '1. THE Corps having been raised under the Act 44 Geo. III. cap. 54 the members are consequently subject to the provisions of that Act and to all regulations which have been or shall be issued under the authority of the Secretary of State for War.' and '14. The following fines shall be imposed the amounts to be settled as above provided that they shall not be less than the following sums respectively viz. For loading contrary to orders or shooting out of turn . 2s. 6d. For discharging the rifle accidentally . 5s. For pointing the same loaded or unloaded at any person without orders . 5s.'. ‎The Rochdale Canal Company. Nine Letters to Ralph Shuttleworth Rochdale attorney and company treasurer and one printed form to his successor John Crossley. Including Autograph Letters Signed from Samuel Greg John Bill and William Bilsbarrow.‎

‎The nine letters to Shuttleworth 1800-1802 from: Farley Hall Staffordshire; Haslingden; Halifax; Bradford; Coventry; Rochdale; Great Fenton. The letter to Crossley from Manchester in 1813. The Rochdale Canal was conceived in 1776 and despite opposition from mill owners fearing a disruption to their water supply began construction following the passing of an act of parliament in 1794. On completion it was officially opened in 1804 and until the railway age it constituted the main commercial route between Yorkshire and Lancashire. The present small collection provides an interesting sidelight into the legal and financial difficulties involved in the project with several reference reflecting badly on Shuttleworth's professional capabilities. The correspondents are: John Bill of Farley Hall Staffordshire; William Bilsborrow Haslingden brewer; Samuel Greg Rochdale cotton manufacturer; Howarth & Wilcock Halifax solicitors; Thomas Marriott of Stockport; John Robert Ogden Bradford solicitor; Mark Pearman of Coventry; N. & F. Phillipps & Co. Manchester merchants; Daniel Whalley of Great Fenton. The ten items in fair condition on aged and worn paper each with slight loss at the head of the leaf and Item Five below with a small hole in leaf resulting in loss to a few words of text. A curious feature is the emendation of the word 'Canal' to 'Company' in several of the letters in an unknown nineteenth-century hand. ONE: ALS 'Jno. Bill' from John Bill 1756-1847 of Farley Hall surgeon to the Manchester Infirmary. 4 May 1802. 1p. 8vo. Depositing a cheque for £40 from Messrs Jones & Co. TWO and THREE: ALS and ANS 'Will Bilsborrow' from William Bilsborrow Haslingden brewer. ALS: 14 April 1800. 1p. 4to. 'You certainly misconceive my request in my former Letter. I will again state that I will thank you to favor me with an explanation how a Ballance. of 19. 10/- arises due to me in the call of June 1st. 95. This with Particulars of Mr Hamer's Bill is all I at present require you to furnish me with. There are some errors which I have found & which a personal interview wod. immediately reconcile . I beg your immediate attention to the above that I may examine and liquidate'. ANS: 17 December 1800. 1p. 4to. He has 'just return'd from a short Journey' and will 'take an oppty of seeing you in the course of a walk'. FOUR: ANS 'Saml. Greg' from Samuel Greg 1758-1834 Rochdale cotton manufacturer see his entry in the Oxford DNB. Manchester 18 December 1800. He is remitting a draft for £90 on Joseph Denison of London 'which you will be pleased to apply towards my Shares in the Rochdale Canal'. The word 'Canal' has been altered in another hand to 'Company'. FIVE: Manuscript Letter signed 'Howarth & Wilcock' Halifax solicitors. 1 January 1801. 1p. 4to. Regarding the 'Mortgagees of the Revd. Mr: Stopford's Estate' and 'the Land taken for the Use of <.> . We have the Draft. Conveyance to peruse & have written to Mr: Elliott respecting some variation in the Measure'. SIX: ALS 'Thos Marriott' from Thomas Marriott. Stockport postmark. No date. 1p. 8vo. 'Dr Sr. Will you have the goodness to enquire and inform me under what Idea the Rochdale Canal altered by another hand to 'Company' Compy attempt to cut through that Estate at Newton Heath in the Holding of Gt. Berry <> and it is not within the powers of their Act if that be true I assure them they never can purchase it it is but a Few Day that we known sic that it was medled sic with I shall be glad you can give better Acctt sic then I understand is <> however something must be done'. Note in another hand: 'to get the valuation of each particular Field the quantity taken cannot be ascertained till the Canal is cut'. On three occasions in the letter the word 'Canal' has been altered in another hand to 'Company'. EIGHT: ALS from Mark Pearman gentleman of Coventry 'instrumental in conducting the elections at Coventry since 1790'. 1 January. 1801. 1p. 8vo. Complaining that he has not received a response to two previous communications regarding 'two Transfers of one Rochadale share &c by Mr. Allen to me' with reference to 'Mr Cole of this place surgeon'. NINE: Printed form clearly made up by the Company and sent to shareholders completed in manuscript and signed 'N & F Phillipps & Co' Manchester merchants. 13 December 1813. 1p. 4to. Addressed in print to 'Mr. Jno. Crossley'. Acknowledging receipt of 'a Draft on Jones and Co. London value One Hundred Pounds - s. - d. the same being the third dividend and second of the current year on the Shares in the Rochdale Canal.' Mimeo snipe on the verso. <br /> <br /> From the archive of film historian and author Joel Finler.<br /> <br /> Directed by cinema verite pioneers Albert and David Maysles and Charlotte Zwerin the documentary follows the final weeks of The Rolling Stones' historic 1969 US tour from performances at Madison Square Garden and Muscle Shoals Alabama to the legendarily disastrous and extraordinarily violent Altamont Free Concert-later described by Rolling Stone magazine as "perhaps rock and roll's all-time worst day December 6th a day when everything went perfectly wrong." On the recommendation of the Grateful Dead informal security for the Altamont show was provided by the Hells Angels leading to a number of escalating conflicts between the unruly bikers and the increasingly drunk and drug-addled hippies in the audience. The violence culminated in the death by stabbing of an 18 year-old audience member captured in its entirety on camera along with the accidental deaths of three others at the show. <br /> <br /> A film associated with the Direct Cinema movement of the 1950s and 1960s but just as much with the beginning of a new style of "reactionary" documentary filmmaking wherein the events being documented lead the film rather than the film being led by a preconceived idea. Considered by many to be the greatest rock documentary ever made encapsulating the chaotic bleak and ultimately timely downfall of the peace and love era.<br /> <br /> Shot on location in Alabama New York and California.<br /> <br /> 10 x 8 inches. ‎London: The Roxy 1977. First Edition. Fair. A first-year membership card for The Roxy in London's Covent Garden epicenter of the UK's burgeoning punk movement. Date-stamped with an expiration date of 31 Dec. 1977 which assuming a one-year membership makes the cardholder one Mr. RH Edwards an inaugural member: the Roxy's opening gala was New Year's day 1977 headlined by The Clash and The Heartbreakers. The premise at 41-43 Neal Street the address features prominently on the card began as warehouse then a disco called Chaguaramas. But in late 1976 Andrew Czezowski Susan Carrington and Barry Jones purchased the building and mounted three early and today very famous shows in December 1976: Generation X The Heartbreakers and Siouxsie and the Banshees. The height of British punk was centered on the club and its first 100 shows were remarkable: The Buzzcocks The Jam The Slits The Police The Stranglers The Vibrators Wire XTC among many others. A remarkable survival from a seminal locale in the history of punk. 2.5'' x 3.5''. Offset printed card stock. Well worn. Creased rubbed and drenched in dried sweat. Yet still intact and readable.
