During the summer of 1995 Turkish archaeologists discovered a unique Late Classical tomb in the Western Necropolis of Assos. A modestly designed cist grave, Tomb 4 surprised excavators with the richest cache of grave goods ever found at the ancient city. The 62 well-preserved artifacts, which date from the 4th century BCE, when Aristotle's school of philosophy was active at Assos, consist of terracotta figurines, gold and bronze jewelry, and vases. The variety of the coroplastic group is especially striking. The types include seated female musicians and a poet, an oklasma-dancer, comic actors, goddesses, a horse-rider, a warrior, female mask protomes, miniature furniture, various animals, and a figurine vase. The main purpose of this publication is to examine the finds from Tomb 4 and to shed light on characteristics of coroplastic produc-tion and socio-cultural life at Assos during its "Golden Age" through a contextual, typological, and iconographical analysis of the terracotta figurines. The variety of the figurines not only gives clues about the identity of the tomb-owners, but also hints at the many aspects of the "Golden Age" of Assos, such as the fertility cults active in the city, the increasing importance of the theatre, the place of women in socio-religious life, and the commercial and cultural relations of Assos with the neighbouring cities, especially Athens.

First published at the beginning of the last century, these inscriptions open a window onto scribal, administrative, and architectural practice during an important, formative period of the Seljuk sultanate in the early thirteenth century. 16 inscriptions of Sinop citadel, all made within a five month period in the summer of 1215, allow us a glimpse of the Seljuk elite at work, with aspirations and ideals of state and office mixing and competing with individual and factional rivalries and administrative changes. This book corrects previous published versions, and offers for the first time a reading of the main sultanic inscription, which has been chiselled out. Contributors analyze the Persian verse inscription, the first of its kind from Seljuk Anatolia, and the only known Seljuk bilingual Arabic-Greek inscription. In addition to an in-depth rereading and analysis of these inscriptions, this book examines their architectural context. This includes the first signed work of Abu Ali al-Halabi, the Syrian military architect who served the Seljuk state, and who later built the well-known Red Tower in Alanya. This book provides a new analysis not only of Seljuk architectural practice based on architectural and inscriptional evidence, it also reevaluates the architecture of the citadel itself. Sinop citadel, one of the most impressive in medieval Anatolia, is redated to the Byzantine era.".

Sustained its existence in Anatolia with its capital being Istanbul (Constantinopolis) for about 11 centuries, the Byzantine civilization is one of the last archeological levels of Anatolia and Thrace, while the remains of its material culture -at least those which are on the ground- comes second in Turkey, only after the monuments of Ottoman civilization. The building inventory of Byzantine period for Central Anatolia region has been published. The inventory prepared by Engin Akyürek, Özgü Çömezoglu, Ayça Tiryaki, Ali Yamaç, Nilay Karakaya, Mete Mimiroglu, Ferda Barut, Tolga Uyar, Seçkin Evcim and 7 contributing people, and contains all the Byzantine buildings and architectural remains in Central anatolia Region, dated from the beginning of Byzantine period (330) till its ending (1453). 622 buildings and building remains from Aksaray, Ankara, Çankiri, Çorum, Eskisehir, Karaman, Kayseri, Kirikkale, Kirsehir, Konya, Malatya, Nevsehir, Nigde, Sivas and Yozgat provinces of Central Anatolia Region, A bibliography consisting of 551 publications on Byzantine architecture in Central Anatolia Region, About 450 visual materials containing building plans and drawings, 2 maps pinpointing the selected Byzantine buildings in General Map of Central Anatolia Region and Selected Areas in Cappadocia, 'Mini Byzantine Glossary for the Enthusiast' containing 168 words, An introductory article on the Byzantine civilization in Central anatolia by Engin Akyurek, Also an index of all buildings showing the distribution by provinces and districts, and the abbreviations used in the inventory are included to the folder.
