The seismicity of Turkey and adjacent areas. A historical review, 1500-1800.
Fine English Paperback. Pbo. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English. 240 p., b/w ills. The seismicity of Turkey and adjacent areas. A historical review, 1500-1800. This is a reference book for historians, earth scientists and others concerned with the seismic hazard of the area within the present borders of Turkey. The core of the book is a descriptive catalogue of every earthquake of any importance of which there is any record, between 1500 and 1799; full bibliographical references are included for each entry. The catalogue is prefaced by detailed comments on previous attempts to compile earthquake catalogues for the area up to the present, and by discussion of the primary source material utilised, in both Middle Eastern and occidental languages. The book contains maps of the regions affected by the larger earthquakes, and a general table of the events associated with the little-known seismic history of a fast-developing area of the Eastern Mediterranean. The book will also be of interest to engineers and, in particular, to those concerned with the mitigation of natural hazards.

Koç Collection.= Hanedan ve kamera. Osmanli Sarayindan portreler. Ömer M. Koç Koleksiyonu. "Dynasty and the Camera: Portraits from the Ottoman Court" exhibition will be held on 8 January - 29 May 2011. The exhibition consists of a selection from the Ottoman portrait photographs from Ömer M. Koç collection shows the high level of technical and artistic terms of photography by the interest of the Ottoman imperial family. This exhibition marks the importance given by the Ottoman sultans, other members of the royal dynasty and statesmen in the 19th century and includes the photographs of Prince Ömer Faruk the son of Caliph Abdülmecid, Nazime Sultan the daughter of Sultan Abdülaziz, Fehime Sultan the daughter of Sultan Murad V, Prince Yusuf Izzeddin the son of Sultan Abdülaziz, Sultan Murad V, Prince Mehmed Selim the son of Sultan Abdülhamid II, Prince Mehmed Seyfeddin and Esma Sultan the children of Sultan Abdülaziz. During the reign of Sultan Abdülaziz, who acceded to the throne in 1861 and was keenly interested in various branches of fine arts, Ottoman portrait photography reached a pinnacle of achievment in both technical and artistic terms, thanks to the skill of the Abdullah Brothers, who specialised in portrait photography. Vasilaki Kargopulo, who was appointed as court photographer in 1878, two years after Sultan Abdülhamid II came to the throne, contiuned to take similarly high quality portraits of the royal family and statesmen. As ameteur photography gained momentum from the turn of the century onwards, members of the royal family began to take their own photographs, the number of family photographs taken in private areas of royal residences increased significantly. Some members of the Ottoman royal family were particularly interested in portrait photography, notably Caliph Abdülmecid Efendi, Heir Apparent Yusuf Izzeddin Efendi, and the royal princes Ömer Faruk, Mehmed Selaheddin and Osman Fuad, who had their portrait photographs on various occasions from their childhood onwards, and pioneered this interest among other members of the royal family as expressions of loyalty and friendship continued for many years. Letters, as a means of correspondence by the hands of political leaders, undoubtedly provide us with substantial information about the status of the state in the political arena, the foreign affairs the politicians run and about the significance that the state has in the eyes of the others. And the 101 letters covered in this work are shedding a bit of light upon the political tradition of the Ottomans, and the mutual relations they had with their counter part sete. We chose to give the summaries of the letters in two languages (Turkish-English) so that the range of benefit would be wider.

FEROZ AHMAD.
From empire to republic. Essays on the late Ottoman Empire and Modern Turkey. 2 volumes set.
New English Paperback. Pbo. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English . 2 volumes set ([xi], [1], 292 p.; [xi], [1], 348 p.). From empire to republic. Essays on the late Ottoman Empire and Modern Turkey. 2 volumes set. Covers' pictures; Vol. 1. The Manakis Brothers, Officers of the 3rd light infantry batallion - on the papers; long live liberty. Vol. 2. Mustafa Kemal Atatürk with women from Ankara during the opening of the Gazi Orman Çiftligi on 7 June 1925, following the announcement of the hat reforms. "In these two volumes, Feroz Ahmad focuses on a crucial period of Turkish modernisation; from Young Turks to Turkish Republic and the relationship between the Committee of Union and Progress and Modern Turkey. He traces the works of generations of reformers; engineers of a new social structure, as well as events that shaped the modernisation path. These articles especially deal with the period since the 1908 revolution, examining the process by which the new Turkey was formed. Ahmad also underlines the crises of legitimacy that characterized much of the period. Articles in two volumes are compiled thematically. First volume deals with the "ideas" of modernisation which spans the period of Young Turk Revolution to Kemalist Movement. That volume also elaborates various subjects such as unionist relations with minorities, the social and economic policy of the Young Turks and the political economy of Kemalism. Second volume discusses events of the period and comments from important figures such as Trotsky. This volume also contains articles on development of working-class consciousness, postage stamps that reflect ideology in the late Ottoman Empire and Ottoman perception of the capitulations. These two volumes also shed the light on problems of contemporary Turkey. Feroz Ahmad's works on Second Constitutional Monarchy and Modern Turkey are well-known. He is an important historian who observes and evaluates political structure of East; from Muslim India to Turkey. In these volumes, he evaluates the problems of Turkey in the last century and discusses with Turkologists and Turkish intellectuals. These articles are written in various times and compiled in a specific context.".

ORHAN VELI KANIK.
Just for the hell of it. 111 poems by Orhan Veli Kanik. Prep. by Talat Sait Halman.
New English Paperback. Pbo. Mint. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In English. [xxii], 142 p. Just for the hell of it. 111 poems by Orhan Veli Kanik. Prep. by Talat Sait Halman. The selections in I am Listening to Istanbul represent about two-thirds of Kan¿k's lifetime output of poems in free verse. The translations are, on the whole, entirely faithful, although never slavish. No poem here appears as a free adaptation or as an "imitation". Most of Orhan Veli's work lends itself very well to colloquial English. In many ways the poems are akin in spirit and style to those of the newer generation of poets in America today. Since Turkish expressions usually find their exact counterparts in today's American and British vernacular, the poems can be translated without too great a loss of poetic values. Very few of Kan¿k's important poems have been omitted because of untranslatable featurs. Orhan Veli's poetry can probably be translated into many languages without too much difficulty. For as much as his work reflects Turkey and Turkish life, his substance and manner have universal validity and value.

Ankara: City of black calpac, 1923-1938.= Ankara: Kara kalpakli kent, 1923-1938. [Exhibition cataalogue]. [With a CD].
New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (29 x 25 cm). In English and Turkish. 364 p., color and b/w ills. Ankara: City of black calpac 1923-1938.= Ankara: Kara kalpakli kent 1923-1938. [Exhibition cataalogue]. [With a CD]. On the 86th anniversary of the Republic: Ankara: City of the Black Calpac, 1923-1938 was unveiled. The exhibition told the story of Ankara, the capital that became the image of the Republic with the "Parliament" at its center and the exemplary lifeworld of the national idea; in doing so, it focused on Ankara's architecture, its social life and its modernized look that were shaped by and around Atatürk. Through photographs, documents and objects, the exhibition showcased Ankara, a city founded on the clashing symbols of the Ottoman Empire and the Republic, and its architectural elements ranging from the Ottoman residential fabric to the modern urban sprawl of the Early Republic; it recreated the exhilaration that accompanied the founding of the Republic and the daily life that was shaped around Atatürk himself. Ankara: the City of the Black Calpac, 1923-1938 narrated the story of the founding days of the Republic and the construction of Ankara, the new capital, as an exemplary city.

Mindful seed speaking soil: Village Institutes of the Republic, 1940-1954.= Düsünen tohum konusan toprak: Cumhuriyet'in Köy Enstitüleri, 1940-1954. 2 volumes set. In a country where nearly ninety percent of the population was still illiterate, Village Institutes were established though the leadership of General Director of Primary Education Ismail Hakki Tonguc on 17 April 1940 with the objective of upholding the principles of the Republic and educating a new kind of citizen. By training the children recruited from villages and sending them back to their local communities, the Institutes targeted the education of a large segment of the population. Slowing down by 1946 due to interior and exterior pressures, the movement ended once the Village Institutes were closed down in 1954. Focused on the Village Institutes as one of the most dramatic processes of evolution in the history of the Turkish Republic and organized by the collaborative efforts of Istanbul Research Institute and Ismail Hakki Tonguç Document Archives, the exhibition entitled, Mindful Seed, Speaking Soil: Village Institutes of the Republic 1940-1954 sheds light to a momentous period in Turkish history through archive documents, photographs, personal objects and witness accounts.
