The photographs taken in Turkey by São Paulo (Brazil) born photographer Norair Chahinian strike viewers in a number of different ways. First through their witnessing of life in various regions of Anatolia 'from the outside', by someone who has come all the way from across the world, thousands of kilometers afar. But more importantly, through their depiction 'from within' of the return of an Armenian to his roots in Maras, Urfa, Iskenderun, as he visits the land of his family after a gigantic lapse of one hundred years. Norair Chahinian was born in Brazil as the child of a family that had fallen victim to the Committee of Union and Progress' genocidal politics against Armenians during the final era of the Ottoman Empire. His grandmothers and grandfathers had lost their families during those days of catastrophe, took refuge in Aleppo, Syria, under dire circumstances and had migrated to Brazil, South America. This quest brought the photographer to Turkey where he knew no one, did not speak the language; where he was familiar neither with the climate nor the ways of the people. But in no way as a tourist. He came here determined to build a bridge between the past and present, as the last link of a family who was the victim and witness of the catastrophe experienced one hundred years ago but had managed to live, survive and build a new life on the other side of the ocean. One of the most significant and multi-faceted photographers of the 20th century, Cecil Beaton's (1904-1980) captivating portraits will be exhibited for the first time in Turkey at Pera Museum. The exhibition focusing on Oscar winning costume designer Cecil Beaton is curated by Terence Pepper, the Senior Advisor on Photographs at the National Portrait Gallery in London, and will include portraits of artists, actors, writers, intellectuals and royalty from between 1920s to the 1970s, from the collection of Sotheby's Cecil Beaton Studio Archive. Cecil Beaton worked in a variety of media ranging from painting, illustration, caricature, theatre and film costume design (winning two Oscars for the latter category for 'Gigi' and 'My Fair Lady'), as well as being a best-selling author, photographic historian, diarist, and occasional actor. However it is as a photographer that most critics agree that he made his most important contribution to the arts. Beaton's photographs define a glittering generation, as he captured from behind his camera lens the great and famous personalities of the 1920s to the 1970s - from eminent artists, to iconic actors, influential philosophers, and international royalty. These intimate portraits tell the story behind the public veneer of the sitter, illuminating their private lives and relationships with Beaton himself.‎

The works of outstanding contemporary artist and 2003 Turner Prize winner Grayson Perry (b. 1960) will be exhibited at Pera Museum, including tapestries, ceramics and prints. Organised in collaboration with the British Council and curated by Linsey Young from the British Council's Visual Arts Team, the exhibition reflects the artist's unrelenting fascination with issues of the everyday, of religion, class, and identity. Well-known for his transvestite alter ego "Claire", Perry's largest single body of work to date, The Vanity of Small Differences, composed of six tapestries from the British Council Collection, will also be exhibited. Though working within the context of contemporary art, Perry remains a practitioner of artisanal crafts and a lover of beauty. He rejects conceptual art as the sole claimant of 'ideas' and champions the decorative and intimate qualities of handmade objects with stories to tell. The ceramic medium that first drew Grayson Perry to craft practice continues to be a critical, and is perhaps the most traditionally beautiful, element of his work. In this exhibition, alongside the series of "The Vanity of Small Differences" the artist's earliest work, a ceramic pot from 2002, the period during which Perry was nominated for the Turner Prize; culminating in a self-portrait, 'A Map of Days,' which was completed in 2014 for a major exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery are also included. Linsey Young, curator of the exhibition "Small Differences" states that visitors will be able to explore the magnificent interior world of Grayson Perry. Through the complex and physically detailed narratives, the audience can observe motifs, such as planes, shopping centres, churches and temples, mobile telephones and of course the artist's beloved teddy bear, Alan Measles, which appear again and again in many different guises.‎

The Haskalah, the Jewish Enlightenment, was the period of Jewish Renaissance that followed the European Enlightenment. Its leading figure was the great German Jewish philosopher Moses Mendelssohn. Though the Jews in Germany and Western Europe were ghettoized culturally and spiritually, they could not escape the influence and political effects of the European enlightenment. This process of "Europeanization" was making inroads especially among the Jewish upper class. Intellectual giants such as Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Voltaire, Montesquieu, and others sparked the "Century of Enlightenment" in Europe. Many of these thinkers were the founders of a group of European progressive intellectuals known as the Encyclopedists. Mendelssohn, greatly influenced by this intellectual community, transmitted the "Century of Enlightenment" to European Jewry. Fueling the "Century of Enlightenment," and the Haskalah, were the burgeoning economic and social developments sweeping European society. Europe had entered a period of revolt against feudalism. The climax came with the French Revolution in 1789-1793, which proclaimed a "Spring to all Nations" with its call for "Liberte, Egalite et Fraternite" The French Revolution allowed Jews, for the first time in Jewish history, to be citizens with equal rights. The freethinking Moses Mendelssohn called for a parallel revolt in Jewish life. Just as the Encyclopedists provided the intellectual basis for the French Revolution, so Mendelssohn and his followers prepared the groundwork for the great Jewish Revolution against the domination of the clerics and religious dogmatism. The Haskalah, which lasted 100 years until the 1870s, saw a great number of the movement's activists-thinkers, writers, poets, and scholars-spearhead the struggle to lead European Jewry out of its intellectual darkness. From Germany, under Mendelssohn's leadership, the movement spread eastward to Poland, Russia, Austria, etc.‎
