Four curious men came together to tell the story of a lost railway in Istanbul. At first all they had were small trains a handful of coal and a breath of steam. Years passed and they learnt a great deal from the documents and albums they had found and from a fifth author of a notebook that had come from the past and joined them by chance. The small trains carrying coal to the heart of the city from a coal mine in the Black Sea coast of Istanbul, were not just heroes of a nostalgic tale. Behind the curtain we opened, there was a huge military project where 5000 people had worked once in sweat and tears. We do not recount anything more or less than what we saw. We wish that those who read the story and see the photos are able to come into contact with history with the same amazement admiration and pleasure that we have. Since second century B.C., China exported silk to different countries in the west as far as the countries on the Mediterranean Coast along different routes. Turkey officially launched an undersea commuter train (the Marmaray) connecting the Asian and European sides of Istanbul on Tuesday, 29 October 2013. It seems that the Marmaray is more than just a Turkish project to improve public trans-portation in Istanbul, but part of the Silk Road, which has served humanity for centuries, connecting Asia and Europe. Moreover, this project will revive historical silk road. That road was not only caravan road but a road that links Western and Eastern civilizations. Nowadays China is also planning to make serious investment to revive "the New Silk Road" that will run through Central Asia and continue into Europe facilitating improved transport and trade. Globalization generally refers to the increased interdependence of the world's economies signified by the circulation of information, money, people and goods across national boundaries. It has of late, given rise to the domination of world's market by a selected number of transnational corporations. However, since time immemorial, different countries were related to one another through geographical spread of ideas, social norms and trading commodi-ties. This premodern phase of globalisation is known as "archaic globalization". In the fol-lowing years we will see that the new projects realised by the countries on the historical Silk Road will play a key role on the new integration process between the east and west as well as the north and the south. The papers in this book invite us to rethink and focus on Silkroad.".

Prof. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, Secretary General of the OIC, wrote the Foreword. As he mentions, preservation of the multicultural character of the city with due respect of the populations and the shrines of each faith is an indispensable part of any acceptable solution of the problem. This character is well reflected in the authentic photographs in the album. Due to its special importance, al-Quds/Jerusalem was visited and described by many travelers. Then, the region became the first place of interest of the pioneer photographers. The Ottoman Palace was among the first in the world to acquire photographs of the region. The Yildiz photograph collection which was formed during the reign of Sultan Abdülhamid II contains a large number of them. The album contains the reproductions of 405 photographs gathered from IRCICA's archive comprising the Yildiz Photograph Albums and several other collections.

The exhibition, "Between Three Seas: Ottoman and French Cartography from then Dardanelles to the Bosphorus (17th ¿ 19th Centuries)" is a collaboration between Arkas Art Center and French Institute for Anatolian Studies. Included in the exhibition are maps of the Dardanelles and the Bosphorus that are lent by the French National Library and French National Archives for the first time and important maps borrowed from archives and collections in Turkey. The exhibition sheds light on the close relationship between the Ottoman and French states over centuries through showing transportation routes by sea, military and armed force settlements, surrounding rural and agricultural areas, geographic and cultural boundaries. The maps of Turkish and French origin offer a comparative perspective on the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles as well as on Ottoman and French cartography. The exhibition also includes pilot charts, military maps, sketches, calculations, drafts and scribbles that reveal the production process of the maps.

Since the medieval building complex consisting of the Friday mosque and the psychiatric hospital was declared World Cultural Heritage Site in 1986 the small provincial town of Divrigi, hidden in the mountains of East Taurus, has become a popular destination for many tourists. While the peculiar architectural art of this historic building is rather considered an incomprehensible curiosity by most visitors, it became a personal object of research for the author as he was certain that there had to be an access to this powerful and apparently exotic imagery that was well worth being deciphered in order to gain a new and expanded view of Islamic mysticism.
