Betty Carp started her career as a telephonist and typewritist at the American Embassy in Constantinople in 1914 hired by Henry Morgenthau, the American Ambassador at that time. She retired in 1964 after 50 years of service as an Attaché and Political Officer. During World War II years she worked for the Office of Strategic Services, the precursor of CIA with Allen W. Dulles that she met and admired during his assignment in Constantinople in the years 1921-1922. Betty Carp was also deeply involved in charity work and the American Hospital in Istanbul where she contributed by raising money for the Hospital. This book covers her life as well as her correspondence with various friends and ambassadors and bring into the light the life and works of an extraordinary woman, unknown so far.‎

As its name implies, the Wealth Tax (Varlik Vergisi), was originally conceived as a tool for taxing the extreme wealth being made through wartime profiteering and black market operations in Turkey during the Second World War. In practice, however, it was imposed in an arbitrary and discriminatory fashion, in essence representing a sort of "economic warfare" carried out by the Turkish regime against the country's non-Muslim population, appropriating much of their wealth and shattering all the hopes and aspirations for eventual religious and ethnic equality that had been held out by the Turkish Constitution some twenty years before. This study is based on documents gleaned from the National Archives of the United Kingdom and provides a detailed and chronological account of this tragic event.".‎

During these two decades, literary activities, literary production, and the literary world in general played an increasingly influential role in large parts of Turkish society. This may be also seen as a shaping, a reconstruction, or an expansion of a more effective literary world, literary public, and literary market containing many different trends and currents. This work also assesses the intricate relations between literary culture and politics. To put it in other words, the hypothesis is that a better understanding of the intellectual and political atmosphere of Turkey in the 1960s and in the early 1970s can be achieved through an examination of cultural and, in our case, literary life, and the way that the various literary currents reflected, sustained and gave voice to the prevalent intellectual and political tendencies of the period. It will be emphasized that the political identity that was adopted by the literary actors was one by and large critical of the existing political and social system. In this work the intellectual climate is thus examined via literature. It will be argued that, along with academics and journalists, the men of letters, or "literary actors," played through their roles as public intellectuals, an important part in the Turkish social life between 1960 and 1980.".‎

Different segments of the society have made different interpretations about what these demonstrations "mean" exactly, who were the protestors, what kind of social, economic and political dynamics were behind these demonstrations, what was the aim of the protestors, and what possible social and political reverberations of the activities would be. We are going through a period where the old political system with its actors and ideology becomes dysfunctional: it is substituted by a quest for a new political system as all actors in our social and political life are looking for ways to have an active role in the play. The function, nature, and priorities of politics are changing; political identities are transforming and political maps are being redrawn. Furthermore, this change is not limited only to Turkey. Our near region, where Turkey has had contacts with all along and where these contacts have recently transformed into an interaction, is also experiencing a historic and radical change. Governments change hands, regimes are overthrown and re-established. The Gezi protests taking place in such an atmosphere undoubtedly correspond to a critical momentum of our political history. Motivation, aim and implications of the demonstrations will continue to have an impact on our political life for a long time; and interpretations about developments will be made by referring to these protests. This study tries to make an in-depth analysis of one to one detailed interviews held with the protesters in the second weeks of the demonstrations in four cities (Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir and Eskisehir), a political assessment of the discourse adopted during and after the protests; analyzes change and sustainability of the discourse and policies of the political parties about the protests; and lastly sheds a light on current political implications and possible implications of the Gezi demonstrations.".‎
