Typographical border. 11-3/8" x 8-5/8" <br/><br/>"In 1846 Peter Felix Richards opened one of the first western restaurants in Shanghai and the first western hotel in China south of the Yangkingpang Yangjingbang creek on the river front on The Bund facing the Huangpu River near Jinling Road East in the Huangpu District of Shanghai in what became in 1849 the French Concession. Named after its founder Richards' Hotel and Restaurant "Licha"; Lee-zo was 'a single and ordinary building' in the Baroque style that targeted initially the seafaring clientele that made up the bulk of travelers to 19th century Shanghai. . By 1859 the hotel was renamed in English the Astor House Hotel while retaining the original Chinese name until 1959. According to actress Grace Hawthorne who stayed at the Astor House in 1894: 'The man who named it some thirty years ago or so had been to New-York and found in the Astor House a model of elegance and hotel excellence. Fare includes Turkey Gumbo Soup with Rice $.20; Brass Rail Ham and Cabbage Baked Potato $.85; "Pot of Sanka Coffee or Kaffee Haag" $.25; and many more. The Beverage List suggests a somewhat loose interpretation of Prohibition or else the eager anticipication of its eradication later that year: a typographic box marked "Reserved for Wines and Champagnes" is nestled between the beer list and ginger ales and the beers include Guiness's Stout and several German droughts rather than the typical super-light Anheuser Busch Budweiser varieties manufactured to meet the alcohol level limitations of the time. Bennett and financed by Scottish immigrant Peter Gibson. The hotel was torn down in 1873 and a larger one was built in its place. This menu is from the days of the second building. A fire destroyed this building in 1912. It was built again and then sold to the Sheraton in 1950s and ultimately closed its doors and was demolished in the 1970s. unknown books
