[Fore-edge Painting] AYTOUN, William Edmondstoune
Lays of the Scottish Cavaliers and other poems. With illustrations by Joseph Noel Paton R.S.A. and Waller H. Paton.
Edinburgh and London:: William Blackwood and sons 1865. 1865. Thick 8vo. xiv 268 pp. Profusely illustrated. Original full brown morocco gilt-tooled covers and massive raised bands accented with black and gilt-rules gilt spine title all edges gilt; some scuffing dust-soiling rubbed. With an ownership inscription pre-fore-edge of Harriet Kaye from Alex D. MacLeary 15th Dec. 1865. Generally very good. With a panoramic erotic fore-edge painting being a wild-romp in a horse stall. The top and bottom edges extend the interior scene a bit. The bottom shows a roughly painted "peeping Tom" and the top offers the "shocked" young woman viewing the two entangled lovers. The idea that the Scottish Cavaliers are getting "laid" is the pun being played by the seller & artist – for what its worth. / Sold by Harrington's with their cost-marks probably a product of either their commission or some direct involvement involving a house-artist. Ascribed to the period ca. 1990s-2000. William Blackwood and sons, 1865. hardcover

[Fore-Edge Painting] CARDWELL, Edward (1797-1861).
New Testament Greek-English. Greek text. The New Testament in Greek and English; with a marginal harmony references to parallel passages a concordance of words and a graduated collection of various readings. Arranged and edited by .
Oxford:: University Press 1837. 1837. Two volumes. 8vo. xii 583 1; 583-1001 1 84 pp. Original full black crushed morocco heavily stamped in gilt all edges gilt; rebacked black morocco raised bands new endleaves. Rubbed stamped series of numbers on titles. Very good set. With two fore-edge paintings by the "Dover" painter showing a scene of "Hornsey Church" and "Fulham Church." Sold by Dawson's Book Shop Los Angeles long ago perhaps in the 1930s. Ex-library copy no markings with direct identification from the Brooklyn Public Library sold Bloomsbury June 5 1986. / For me the work of this artist is much admired because of the quality of the paintings and the bindings used – clearly a bookseller with discretion took care to see that fine books with fine bindings were used. What stood out right away is that half of the Doheny library was made up of work from this artist. They were all among Doheny's earliest fore-edge painting purchases. They all came out of Southern California booksellers Dawson's and J.W. Robinson's Company Rare Book section of the famous department store in Los Angeles. Both Dawson's and Robinson's were either going to England or placing orders to have items sent to them. As soon as Mrs. Doheny was buying these works regularly more would come to keep her interested. This artist was working in the 1920s and remains anonymous other than it seems that one bookstore in London should be responsible for the works offered from this artist. That dealer seems to be the famous Marks & Company who did sell some fore-edge paintings but I have not found a Marks & Company sales catalogue to verify this theory. / This is the original artist's depiction of Hornsey Church 1750 is the same used by our fore-edge painter. Note the positioning of the people on the road left and next to the tree far right are also in the same position on the fore-edge painting. / Note: Fulham Church – source of the original image. Note the key elements are all the same: the height and number of trees the two prominent buildings the figures both on the rowboat and on the shore. One can see how the fore-edge artist interprets this scene and how well it matches. There are virtually no made-up sequences. This is the work of a copyist as most fore-edge painters are that. Source: William Marshall Select Views in Great Britain 1825. This scene has subsequently been attributed to Ralph Hall's Picturesque Scenery though not confirmed. Near fine. ". . . BOUND UNDER THE DIRECTION OF SIR WALTER SCOTT HIMSELF": Manuscript note found within this copy: "Sir Walter Scott's Rokeby Edinburgh 1813. Original edition green morocco. This precious volume was bound under the direction of Sir Walter Scott himself transmitted to the binder by John Ballantyne the publisher; the edge when bent discloses a wonderful view of Rokeby corrected in pencil: Barnard Castle painted by the celebrated Patrick Nasmyth 1787-1831 when in the full rigor of his great artistic talent." – THIS MUST BE THE TAYLOR & HESSEY PAINTER his work is profoundly similar to this artist especially when considering his expert use of creating depth in a painting plus his preponderance of thick dense trees that are painted with remarkable detail unlike other fore-edge painters. This is an extremely rare example of the actual artist's name being mentioned. This is a choice example of a Taylor & Hessey binding with their exquisitely painted fore-edge painting the binding being signed in the usual way from this bindery. Of all the Taylor & Hessey specimens I have examined this is the first to mention the artist's name. The added association with this being a quarto volume not the more typical and cheaper octavo and that Sir Walter Scott's name is associated with the design of the binding suggesting also the fore-edge painting this is something quite unique. [Fore-Edge Painting] Church of England
The Book of Common Prayer and administration of the Sacraments. with: Proper Lessons to be read at morning & evening prayer on the Sundays and other Holy Days throughout the year.
Oxford:: University Press 1844. 1844. 9 cm. 3.7 x 2.25 inches. 2 volumes. 16mo. not paginated. Original full very dark maroon gilt-stamped morocco all edges gilt gilt inner dentelles cream endsheets. Both volumes are within a maroon full-leather slipcase with draw-string. A note suggests the box is later made however the same note states that the fore-edge paintings are early and they are clearly not early. All-in-all a handsome set very nicely preserved. Fine. With two fore-edge paintings called "Village Church scenes". The bookseller's note referencing this item suggests that these fore-edge paintings were from 1844. This supports buyers thinking that an item is something which it isn't – a huge problem with fore-edge painted books. What is their true history and how does one know it It is natural to ask what evidence is there for taking a position on an item like this. The fore-edge paintings offered here are likely dated to the 1990s. These are not 19th century images. / What do you suppose is far more likely to be true: that an item in front of you is new or that it is old If it is 'new' then how do you know What if it is old Be aware that a true fore-edge painted specimen of any early date say 1780 or 1802 – is quite rare – especially when compared to the overwhelming number of 20th century specimens and especially specimens that are fresh – new – not even as old as the internet! What is the evidence It is often thought that early provenance implies that a book has a fore-edge painting when it is a thing inscribed to a lover perhaps a bride or a close friend. Some fore-edge paintings have been made and inscribed thus but they are very rare. What is common is an item that is new. / A charming piece as its condition including the case are perfectly kept and clean. The Fore-edge Paintings of John T. Beer; a biographical & historical essay followed by a Catalogue Raisonné based on the sale of his library. With a prologue: The ABC's of fore-edge painting.
Los Angeles:: Jeff Weber 2005. 2005. 8vo. xxvi 164 pp. Color frontispiece 10 plates including 10 color illus. chronology. Special copy in trial binding for the author in full navy-blue straight grain morocco spine with gilt title all edges gilt navy cloth felt-lined slip-case each bound by David Weinstein for Jeff Weber. Unique deluxe format for copy #1. SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR AND BINDER. Fine. C330/046 ONE OF 3 COPIES with fore-edge paintings by Martin Frost the painting inspired by the history of John T. Beer his life and work. The regular edition was limited to 210 copies printed by the Castle Press Pasadena. Those copies were bound in blue cloth. This copy is the most deluxe form of the edition. / Forty years after the second edition of Professor Carl J. Weber's book Fore-edge Painting; an historical survey Second edition 1966 his grandson antiquarian bookseller Jeff Weber has written a book that puts an end to the phrase: "Carl Weber's book is the only book written on fore-edge painting." This new book provides new and complete insight into the history of John T. Beer's fore-edge paintings and generally a new approach to studying and discovering the factual history of this unique form of book decoration. The book revises and enlivens the history of John T. Beer's remarkable fore-edge painting work. /What was the history of Beer's fore-edge paintings Was he a private collector who painted on his own books or did he paint on books from his family's library When did he do these paintings Where was he How many pieces did he paint What were the patterns of his work and how can one identify his work After more than 100 years of his passing is it possible to find out and build a catalogue raisonné of his work Meaning: is it possible to reconstruct a full catalogue of all his known works their distribution and histories from 1903 to the present Why is finding all this out important Indeed all of these points are key in this book the first full account of a fore-edge painter. The bibliographic puzzle of this man and his work was answered by a lot of sleuthing. After more than 30 years of effort and thanks to many disparate sources this book now handles Beer's work seriously and uncovers the work of a remarkable mind. For me the moment of coup de grace was learning the exact date and source that Beer bought some of his books then painted on the edges and then in 1903 he sold his library just as he was also about to die. / In addition the book offers a beginner's guide to fore-edge painting. The ABC's of Fore-edge Painting is a brief account of what the basics are in fore-edge painting. Every collector will want to have a chance to understand the language and art of fore-edge paintings. Currie Caroline Billin Curry 1849-1940 was one of the most beloved book painters of the 20th century who spent the majority of her carrier working for Henry Sotheran Booksellers in London. "She became famous for her miniature paintings applied to two art forms. First on ivory mounted on Rivière bindings and named by her employer as "Cosway" bindings. Later she expanded her work into the art of painting on the fanned edge of a book -- called a fore-edge painting. Most of these paintings were signed and numbered by the artist. Whereas fore-edge painting history is replete with unknown artists Currie is a notable exception. In the book world the name Miss C.B. Currie is widely recognized yet her personal life and real name remained guarded and unknown until now. It turns out her name was in fact partly a pseudonym. Though her work is highly prized there is no known published biography. Her correct full name was recently discovered to be Caroline Billin Curry. During her entire artistic career Curry used the slightly altered version of her name "Currie". Her true full name is not to be found in any published record of her work from Sotheran's" Weber.

Provenance: Sotheran's catalogue 819 supplement item 1688 or 1689; Chas. J. Sawyer Ltd. Catalogue 154 item 127 1929 -- said to have passed to an Akron Ohio institution -- unknown Ohio bookseller -- Mosher Books 2008; Sold to Randall Moscovitz 2008.

Weber. [Fore-Edge Painting] [BIBLE 1802].
The Holy Bible containing the Old Testament and the New: Translated out of the original tongues: and with the former translations Diligently compared and revised By His Majesty's special Command.
London:: John Reeves 1802. 1802. 4to. ii xxi pp. 228 ff. a2 b-d4 e2 A-Z4 2A-Z4 3A-G4. Original dark greenish-blue straight-grain morocco gilt floral ruled borders raised bands with three angels in three compartments a.e.g. The binding is not signed but it is similar to other English bindings of the period possibly Staggemeier & Welcher. The spine foot says "Genesis to Numbers" and "Reeves's - Edition" in gilt. Early armorial bookplate of W. H. Battie-Wrightson Cusworth Yorkshire. Extensively annotated in ink holograph 3 1/2 pages on blank endleaves being the record of Thomas de Grey's family births marriages and deaths; he is the second son of Lord Walsingham "a clergyman married Elizabeth Fourth Daughter of the Hon.ble. Brownlow North Bishop of Winchester on the 12th of August 1802 by Special Licence at the Private Chapel at Winchester House Chelsea. . ." Very good. WITH A DOUBLE FORE-EDGE PAINTING of Philadelphia in 1790 and New York in 1820. The scene of Philadelphia shows churches buildings a harbor and shipping scene; on the reverse edge showing "New York" has various harbor buildings. Not signed; likely painted just prior to Leamington's owning this volume thus ca. 1953. The artist is not known. Often an American bookstore would import a volume acquired from an artist or a British bookstore. / Written in pencil "Dr. Carl J. Weber says no American scenes on double fore-edge paintings . . . Bot bought of Leamington Book Shop July '53. says this is the 3rd he has brought over." While a lot of time has passed one should never say "never" with regard to topics painted. The fact is that more and more paintings were painted and as that occurred the market was in America so scenes of American city views most being not so recognizable maybe became painted more and more as well. It largely depended on when the artists were painting and where they derived their commissions. Some artists were working independently of a bookstore or a binder and those painters also had their own patterns of what they painted frequently. Samuel Stevens not the artist here! was exactly that type of artist. / PROVENANCE: W. H. Battie-Wrightson Cusworth Yorkshire. William Wrightson 1752-1827 of Cusworth Hall Doncaster Yorkshire was a former member of Parliament 1784-1790; his son of the same name lived 1789-1879; it is unclear which person's bookplate the name refers. Brownlow North 1741-1820 former owner family member was appointed Bishop of Winchester in 1781. DNB. More recently a pencil note within the book indicates it was purchased from Leamington Book Shop July 1953. A bookseller's clipped catalogue description appears to be that of Leamington's Price: £18 10s. ca. 1953. A later pencil note 12/98 indicates this book was priced in December 1998 at $1600. Bound ca. 1905 by Alfred De Sauty stamped in gilt on front turn-in. Contemporary full green levant morocco front cover elaborately decorated in gilt pointille and inlaid with Celtic strapwork and floral patterns in red brown and dark blue morocco's. Rear cover decoratively ruled in gilt with a central strapwork of red brown and dark blue morocco's. Spine with five raised bands elaborately decorated in gilt pointille and inlaid red morocco flowers. Gilt ruled board edges and turn-ins red morocco doublures and endleaves the doublures decorated with flowers in gilt all edges gilt. Spine very slightly faded front joint expertly and almost invisibly repaired. Housed in a felt-lined red cloth clamshell case spine with leather label lettered in gilt.

A Superb Alfred De Sauty Arts & Crafts Binding with a fine triptych Fore-Edge Painting depicting three scenes from the text: "The Entrance to Milton Lockhart" page 142; "Norham Castle page 24; "Lasswade Cottage" page 33 and with fine gilt pointille work typical of the great Rivière bindings of 1905-1920. "The binding is signed on the leather front doublure. Even though the fore-edges are not signed no other person but the binder would have added paintings on the fore-edge of a special binding" Weber.

The work of bookbinder Alfred de Sauty 1870-1949 is appreciated for its delicate tooling. Although little is known about his life he worked in both London 1898 to 1923 and Chicago 1923 to 1935. "For instance scholars are unsure whether when in London de Sauty worked independently for the firm of Riviere & Sons or both. While in London he may also have been a designer for the Hampstead Bindery and a teacher at the Central School of Arts and Crafts" Harvard as works he bound during this period are signed "de S" or "De Sauty.". De Sauty's career in Chicago working for the hand bindery of R. R. Donnelley & Sons is better documented; bindings made here use the name R. R. Donnelly. "He signed his work at the foot of the front doublure if present and at the center of the bottom turn-in of the front upper board if not" Harvard.

Provenance: Ziern-Hanon Galleries Missouri 2009; Weber. [Fore-edge Painting] [ROSCOE, William (1753-1831)] Henry ROSCOE
The Life of William Roscoe by his son . . .
London:: Printed for T. Cadell 1833. 1833. 2 volumes. 8vo. xv 1 501 1; xii 491 1 pp. 2 frontispieces; both frontispieces are foxed or stained. Original dark maroon blind- and gilt-stamped morocco all edges gilt cream endleaves; joints rubbed. Early small oxidized silvery-looking bookplate/label of I.M. Galton Eton. Very good. With two fore-edge paintings by Don Noble: Westminster Hall & Hampton Court. Very finely painted – this book seems like it was a book that Noble liked to paint on as his detail is sharper on this set. The paintings are not signed but Noble's style and choice of colors is clearly recognizable. In addition there is a short penciled note 2 markings in his hand: / HANDWRITING OF DON NOBLE: Not clearly written: ffu or perhaps DHo or if one's imagination is working DNo is stylistically possible representing a moniker or artist's signature. Whatever he wrote it is his handwriting / 2 vB i.e. 2 vols. But looks like a "B". / William Roscoe was "a champion of freedom for all a poet writer scholar patron of the Arts lawyer banker bibliophile and botanist." – John Moores University Liverpool. / Sold by Harrington's with their cost-marks end-paper annotations. Probably commissioned by or represented by that firm just after it was painted. Don Noble either sold the set to Harrington's or they commissioned him to paint on this set which is what I would guess is correct. The period of execution being approximately 1980s-1990s. By evidence of Harrington's the father not the 2 sons buying pattern at auction I note that the firm purchased auctioned lots of leather-bound books and commissioned or assigned various books for making a new fore-edge painting. [Fore-Edge Painting] Currie, Miss CB (artist); Oliver Goldsmith C B
The Miscellaneous Works of Oliver Goldsmith
London: Macmillan and Co 1902. The Globe edition. Octavo 7 1/8 x 4 3/4 inches; 180 x 121 mm. ii Miss Currie signed limitation verso blank i-v vi-lx ii 1-695 1 pp. Inserted photogravure portrait frontispiece of "Mr. Quick as Tony Lumpkin". Laid-in is the original catalog description and receipt from Zeitlin & Ver Brugge Los Angeles dated March 5th 1986. Bound ca. 1931 by Rivière & Son for Henry Sotheran. Full dark blue straight-grain morocco covers elaborately tooled in gilt and blind spine with five raised bands decoratively tooled in gilt and blind and lettered in gilt in compartments. Gilt -ruled board edges gilt decorated turn-ins gray endpapers all edges gilt. With the bookplate of Brooklyn Public Library Ramsay fund on front paste-down. Housed in a fleece-lined quarter black morocco clamshell case spine with five raised bands lettered in gilt in compartments. With a very fine fore-edge painting by Miss C.B. Currie of Lucan House Dublin. Inserted limitation leaf at front "This is No. 157 of the Books/with Fore-edge Paintings/by/Miss Currie/The Painting under the gold/is a view of/Lucan-House Dublin./Signed/ C.B. Currie". A very fine example.

Goldsmith was an Irish novelist playwright and poet whose facility among different genres brought him fame and friendship with many great eighteenth-century British authors. Kept busy by writing quickly and voluminously for Grub Street the center of London's disreputable part of the literary world Goldsmith nevertheless also found time to hone novels such as The Vicar of Wakefield poems such as The Deserted Village and plays such as She Stoops to Conquer. Contemporaries celebrated Goldsmith's ability to craft deceptively complex characters most notably in the case of Charles Primrose the vicar from The Vicar of Wakefield. Goldsmith counted Samuel Johnson among his closest friends and Johnson wrote the epitaph that appears on Goldsmith's memorial in Westminster Abbey's famous Poets' Corner: "To the memory of Oliver Goldsmith poet philosopher and historian by whom scarcely any style of writing was left untouched and no one touched unadorned whether to move to laughter or tears; a powerful yet lenient master of the affections in genius sublime vivid and versatile in expression noble brilliant and delicate is cherished in this monument by the love of his companions the fidelity of his friends and the admiration of his readers."

"The miniature painter "Miss C.B. Currie" b. December 12 1849; d. April 2 1940 was one of the most prominent fore-edge artists in the twentieth century. A master of the art of miniature painting she excelled as a copyist working for Henry Sotheran Booksellers London. She became famous for her miniature paintings applied to two art forms. Even today many fore-edge artists remain anonymous. In the book world the name Miss C.B. Currie is widely recognized yet her personal life and real name remained guarded and unknown until now. It turns out her name was in fact partly a pseudonym. During her entire artistic career Curry used the slightly altered version of her name "Currie". Her true full name is not to be found in any published record of her work from Sotheran's. Her private affairs remain mostly unknown to us and sadly no portrait photograph is known. The earliest year Currie fore-edge paintings appear in Sotheran catalogues is a 1913 supplemental leaf and after that not until 1924 see Currie 20. Since nineteen fore-edge paintings were made prior to 1924 and none of these appear in the Sotheran catalogues available to me from 1910-1923 it is unclear as to when the fore-edge painting effort really began. She may have made a few fore-edge paintings from ca. 1911 to 1914 and then discontinued until after the war. The number 172 was reached by 1933 and it seems unlikely that many more were done after that date." According to Weber "Young knew Col. Don L. Wells who commissioned him to make fore-edge paintings possibly during the mid-1930s in Los Angeles CA. Young apparently did not supply title-labels but he did sign the books typically on the rear free endleaf facing the fore-edge. In 1940 he demonstrated painting on a fore-edge as part of the "Art in Action" project at the Golden Gate International Exposition Palace of Fine Arts." Annotated Dictionary of Fore-Edge Painting. There are eight examples of Lyman Young's Fore-Edge Painting in Weber's Annotated Dictionary including the present which is pictured in color and described thusly ". the artist offered a scene of fox hunting with the hounds and riders. Young wrote his name as per his usual style on the back inside leaf along the recto's edge using red colored paint: his name in capital letters." Annotated Dictionary of Fore-Edge Painting. A rare example of Lyman Young's work. Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown unknown

This edition brings all four together with a brief biography of the author. The poem would inspire painters and musicians including Gainsborough and Bach and would be translated into French and German; it was also at the center of in two legal disputes over publication copyrights.

The firm Taylor and Hessey was at its height between 1808-1823 working in both publishing and fine bindings. Their work is usually identifiable from their use of colored Morocco and gilt-stamp name on the foredge of their book boards. Taylor & Hessey also employed a foredge painter whose identity remains lost but whose work predominantly features buildings and landscapes. Of the twenty-four books in American libraries studied by Weber only one exception can be found in the "copy of Mrs. Tighe's Psyche London 1811 on the fore-edge of which 'the Marlborough Gem' is painted" Weber.

Provenance: Weber. 1001 Fore-Edge Paintings.
