The second volume has 40 plates, making up a hundred or so illustrations, partly coloured and all signed by Chevreul. These show examples of colour contrasts through lithographed colour spots on light or dark backgrounds. At the end of this volume, there is also a text by Condorcet printed on 9 different-coloured leaves. Contemporary half light-brown calf, spine with fillets in gilt and blind, gilt dentelle at head and foot, marbled paper pastedowns and endpapers. Plate volume in half-cloth Bradel binding. An internationally renowned chemist, member of the Royal Society and director of the Natural History Museum, Michel-Eugène Chevreul was inspired by his lectures at the Gobelins tapestry workshops to write this foundational work on colour theory. This work, of key scientific importance, also had a significant impact on the applied arts (textiles, glass, and so on) and painting. Chevreul's chromatic circles inspired the Impressionists (especially Seurat) and later also the Neo-Impressionists like Sonia and Robert Delaunay. Paul Signac acknowledged his debt in his famous essay D'Eugène Delacroix au Néo-impressionnisme (1899): "During a visit we made to Chevreul at the Gobelins in 1884, which was our initiation into the science of colours, the learned sage told us that around 1850, Delacroix, whom he didn't know, wrote to him expressing the desire to debate with him the scientific theory of colours and ask him about several things that were still troubling him. Unfortunately, Delacroix's permanent sore throat prevented him from going out on the appointed day, and they never met. Perhaps, otherwise, the sage would have enlightened Delacroix even further." Rare complete copy of this work, which played a fundamental role in the evolution of modern painting. [FRENCH VERSION FOLLOWS] Édition originale. Exemplaire bien complet des deux tableaux dépliants du volume de texte et des 40 planches de l'atlas présentant une centaine de figures partiellement coloriées et toutes signées par Chevreul. Elles montrent des exemples de contrastes de couleurs à partir de points colorés lithographiés sur fonds clairs ou sombres. À la fin de ce même volume se trouve un texte de Condorcet imprimé sur 9 feuillets de couleurs différentes. Reliure de l'époque en demi veau lavallière, dos lisse orné de filets dorés et à froid, dentelle dorée en tête et en queue, gardes et contreplats de papier caillouté, reliure de l'époque. Atlas en demi percaline à la bradel. Chimiste de réputation internationale, membre de la Royal Society et directeur du Museum d'histoire naturelle, Michel-Eugène Chevreul s'inspira de ses conférences sur les tapisseries à la manufacture des Gobelins pour réaliser cet ouvrage fondateur de la théorie des couleurs. Ce travail, d'une importance scientifique capitale, eut également une influence considérable sur les arts appliqués (tissus, vitraux...) et la peinture. Les cercles chromatiques de Chevreul inspirèrent les impressionnistes (notamment Seurat) et plus tard les néo-impressionnistes comme Sonia et Robert Delaunay. R A R E ! A lovely painting of a Mandarin. the verso of this painting has a small sticker at lower left with "Made in China" prin- ed on it. The painting was done with a skilled and steady hand with attention to detail using a very fine brush typical of the time. The Mandarin wears a blue silk gown with delicate gold wave pattern embroidered on it. On the chest is a black silk embroidery with a white crane and the rank badge typical furry "cravat" or neck decoration. He also wears the typical Imperial Mandarin's hat. In order to exalt ancestors it was common to execute such paintings posthumously to elevate relatives of or to offic- ialdom. Fuzhou: Ling Yu Sing Gift Shop c.1930. A beautifully illustrated bilingual retelling of the "Butterfly Lovers" a famous Chinese legend of true love conquering all. This album was produced in Fuzhou by the Ling Yu Sing Gift Shop which specialized in momentos of Chinese history and culture for the lucrative tourist market. Each of the ten paintings faces a caption in Chinese with an English translation below. The legend tells of the thwarted love between two scholars: Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai. Zhu's father has already arranged for her to marry a wealthy merchant leaving Liang to die of a broken heart. On the day of the wedding however as the procession passes the site of Liang's burial a clap of thunder sounds and his grave opens up. Zhu descends to join him and thus can be with her beloved forever. The story is also immortalized in the world-renowned "Butterfly Lovers' Violin Concerto" composed by He Zhanhao and Chen Gang which premiered in 1959. Octavo concertina-style 205 x 143 mm pp. 21. With 10 colour paintings on silk mounted within pattern-woven off-white silk borders. This album was produced in Fuzhou by the Ling Yu Sing Gift Shop which specialized in momentos for the lucrative tourist market. Each of the ten paintings faces a caption in Chinese and English. The story of Han Shi-Chung and Liang Hung-Yu is representative: "Han Shi-Chung rose from rank and file to the top in the army. He fought many a courageous battle for his master King Kao Tsung of the Sung Dynasty. His wife Liang Hung-Yu possessed no less martial spirit as her husband. Once a foreign tribe Chin invaded China. She got up to the tower on the city wall to act as a drummer to call forth fighting spirit among the men in her husband's forces. The enemy was routed at last". Octavo concertina-style pp. 21. Fuzhou: Ling Yu Sing Gift Shop c.1930. An attractive celebration of Confucian moral exemplars from Chinese history including a man who is willing to bury his son alive to free up food for his mother an official who renounces his rank to search for his parent and a lady who breastfeeds her mother-in-law to restore her health. This album was produced in Fuzhou by the Ling Yu Sing Gift Shop which specialized in momentos for the lucrative tourist market. Each of the 24 paintings faces a caption in Chinese and English. Octavo concertina-style pp. 25. With 24 colour paintings on silk mounted within pattern-woven off-white silk borders. Original wooden bevelled boards front cover with green hand-carved roundel with Chinese character "fu" "prosperity" top edge brown. Contemporary gift inscription on verso of final panel.
