‎<p><em><strong>Spyros Papaloukas - The Cathedral of Annunciation at Amphissa: Hagiographies Drawings Anthibola 1927-1931</strong></em></p><p>Athens: MIET 2017. In Greek. ISBN: 978-960-250-667-7.</p><p>During the Interware period the question of renewal of the Byzantine painting was answered by the great Kontoglous who was faithful to the tradition and by Papaloukas who was the new blood. The Church of Greece took the part of Kontoglous and Papaloukas' work was not recognized in his days. But Papalouka's oeuvre places him among the leading artists of the past century; his work stands out for the perfection of composition and chromatic harmony.</p><p>This book presents the iconographic work designed and performed by Spyros Papaloukas 1892-1957 at the Metropolitan Church of the Annunciation at Amphissa Phocis. In 1927 Papaloukas won the Competition for the hagiography of the temple and for the next six years he worked in Amphissa composing "unique hagiographic work" as N. Fousekis writes in the introductory text. Papaloukas moved away "from the classical Byzantine forms" but without extremities. With the evolution of his work and the innovations that emerged from the outset not everyone agreed. Although the artist worked until 1931 the project remained incomplete due to the intervention of the local Bishop who considered that "the work had been diverted from the specifications of the Byzantine tradition".</p><p>However it is a particularly important example of ecclesiastical art in which the renewal of hagiography was attempted with originality but with respect to the Eastern Orthodox doctrines.</p><p>The method of the anthibola used by Papaloukas for the hagiography of the temple dates back to the 15th century and was widespread in Crete.</p> MIET paperback‎

Le Petit Palais possède un ensemble exceptionnel de peintures et de dessins légués par Fernand Pelez à la Ville de Paris. L’exposition met parfaitement en valeur cette collection inestimable et met à l’honneur avec brio un artiste méconnu qui mérite d’être redécouvert. Des œuvres académiques de jeunesse aux tableaux naturalistes de la maturité, le Petit Palais retrace l’itinéraire artistique du "peintre de la pitié", selon les termes de Joséphin Péladan, écrivain mystique et fondateur du Salon de la Rose+Croix. Élève dans l’atelier d’Alexandre Cabanel entre 1870 et 1873, Fernand Pelez se consacre d’abord à la peinture d’histoire et expose au Salon, qui se tient tous les ans au palais de l’Industrie, de grandes huiles sur toile aux thèmes inspirés de la Bible et de l’Antiquité. De cette formation académique il garde, tout au long de sa carrière, un goût prononcé pour la figure et le dessin. Mais dès 1880, il se détourne de la peinture d’histoire, qui n’intéresse plus la critique, pour peindre la vie des misérables du Paris de la Belle Époque. Des personnages anonymes, victimes du libéralisme économique de la société moderne, remplacent les martyrs et les damnés antiques. La sobriété des œuvres, qui mettent en scène des figures marquées par la douleur et la misère, sans contexte précis, accentue l’atmosphère sinistre. La femme occupe une place centrale dans ces tableaux naturalistes d’une grande qualité d’exécution: parfois soumise à des travaux ingrats, parfois représentée en mater dolorosa, entourée d’enfants affamés, elle dévisage tristement le spectateur.
