‎Rubens was mesmerised by faces. He studied physiognomy, the pseudo-science that began making headway in the sixteenth century, which postulated that a person?s character could be read from their facial features. He made geometrical analyses of the faces of ancient emperors and heroes. He invested a great deal of time in detailed anatomical studies, sometimes based on nature, and equally often on antique busts and coins. At times it seems as though the master wanted to know and understand every nook and cranny of the human face. To this end he studied man himself and the way in which the ancients dealt with nature. His best portrait copies, thus, are not strictly copies but rather studies in which art history, craftsmanship, literature and theory merge into an emulation of art and nature. They are works in which the artist was looking for what ultimately captivated him the most: man in all of his myriad facets, and the perspectives art afforded to better understand man.‎

‎- 6 septembre 1861, 13,4x20,9cm, une feuille rempliée. - Autograph letter signed to the "père Martin", dealer of Impressionist paintings: "I wanted to draw oxen but I assure you that these fellows are not easy to paint". 6 September 1861, 13.4x20.9cm, one sheet of paper. Autograph letter signed by the painter Johan Barthold Jongkind, to Pierre-Firmin Martin, known as "le père Martin", dealer of Impressionist paintings, having participated in the organisation of the first Impressionist exhibition of 1874. 3 pages on a sheet of paper, a lack of paper on the second part of the sheet. The painter wrote this letter to his merchant friend in 1861, from Parize-le-Châtel, situated about fifteen kilometres south of Nevers. Renowned for its healthy air, the village was one of Jongkind's favourite holiday and study spots. Jongkind describes his posing sessions in Saint-Parize, which gave rise to magnificent watercolours and oil paintings (La ferme à Saint Parize le Châtel, 1861, coll. part; Saint Parize le Châtel, 1869, Musée du Petit Palais): "[. ...] I wanted to tell you again that I wanted to draw oxen, but I assure you that these fellows are not easy to paint, my ideas are to place them in landscapes that I intend to paint". The painter envisages a stay in a spa town to calm his chronic nervous disorders, and evokes his providential patron, Madame Joséphine Fresser: "I will take the waters with the hope that it will do me good, fortunately I receive a lot of kindness from Madame Fresser, giving me the favour of living more economically". [FRENCH VERSION FOLLOWS] Lettre autographe signée du peintre Johan Barthold Jongkind, à Pierre-Firmin Martin, dit "le père Martin", marchand de tableaux des Impressionnistes, ayant participé à l'organisation de la première exposition Impressionniste de 1874. 3 pages sur un feuillet remplié, un manque de papier sur la deuxième partie du feuillet. Le peintre écrit cette lettre à son ami marchand en 1861, depuis Parize-le-Châtel, situé à une quinzaine de kilomètres au sud de Nevers. Réputé pour son air sain, le village fut l'un des lieux de villégiature et d'étude favoris de Jongkind. Jongkind décrit ses séances de pose à Saint-Parize, qui donnèrent lieu à de magnifiques aquarelles et huiles sur toile (La ferme à Saint Parize le Châtel, 1861, coll. part. ; Saint Parize le Châtel, 1869, musée du Petit Palais) : "[...] je voulais encore vous dire que j'ai voulu dessiné [sic] des boeufs. mais je vous assure ces gaillards ne sont pas commodes pour les faire peindre mes idées sont de les placer dans des paysages que l'ai l'intention de vouloir peindre". Le peintre envisage un séjour dans une ville d'eaux pour calmer ses troubles nerveux chroniques, et évoque sa providentielle protectrice, Madame Joséphine Fresser : "Je prendrai les eaux avec l'espoir qu'ils [sic] me feront du bien, heureusement que je reçois tout plein de bontés de Madame Fresser, ce qui me donne fatalement la faveur de vivre plus économiquement. [...]".‎

‎De laatste jaren wordt het werk van de Antwerpse havenkunstenaar Eugeen Van Mieghem internationaal herontdekt door tentoonstellingen o.a. in Barcelona, Londen, New York, Parijs, Amsterdam en Berlijn.Dit is mede te danken aan auteur en conservator Erwin Joos van het Eugeen Van Mieghem Museum in Antwerpen die sinds 1982 het oeuvre bestudeert. Dit is zijn eerste boek gewijd aan de grootste Van Mieghem collectie ter wereld: het Stedelijk Prentenkabinet der Stad Antwerpen dat niet minder dan 610 werken van deze kunstenaar bezit.Van Mieghem groeit op in het hartje van de oude Antwerpse haven. In 1892 komt hij de Antwerpse Academie in contact met het werk van o.a. Van Gogh, Seurat en de Toulouse-Lautrec. In 1896 werd hij echter van de academie verwijderd en gaat werken in de haven. In 1901 kende Van Mieghem heel wat succes op "La Libre Esthetique". Kort daarna huwt hij met Augustine Pautre. Rond 1900 maakt hij een indrukwekkende reeks over de Joodse landverhuizers die met de Red Star Line naar de Nieuwe Wereld vertrekken. Eind dat jaar wordt Augustine ziek Van Mieghem zal haar stervend weergeven in een indrukwekkende reeks tekeningen en pastels.In 1912 heeft hij een eerste individuele expositie maar de ontluikende internationale belangstelling wordt door de Eerste Wereldoorlog abrupt afgebroken. In 1920 Van Mieghem benoemd tot leraar aan de Antwerpse Academie en tot aan zijn dood blijft hij kunst maken over de Antwerpse haven en haar bevolking. Als geen ander heeft hij het leven van de gewone mens, levend en werkend in een wereldhaven, getekend en geschilderd.‎
