Exceptionally clean binding. Text block firmly bound. With 271 numbered pages on semi-glossy stock. Featuring numerous full-color plates many of which are full-page. Glossy full-color pictorial dust jacket; note however edge wear/wrinkling along the top edge of the DJ front and the DJ spine evenly sunned. Almost certainly unread. A Fine copy in a Very Good Minus DJ. 4 lbs. 7 oz. Giovanni Battista di Iacopo di Rossi 1494-1540 known as Rosso Fiorentino is considered one of the foremost exponents of Italian Mannerism. From the very first highly significant works commissioned of him his rebellious impulse against the constraints of a classicism then in crisis is clearly evident. An aggressive and iconoclastic spirit Rosso Fiorentino made a fundamental contribution in his subsequent works to the richest and most disquieting current of the Maniera proposing compositions that were tormented convulsive and animated by an expressionism bordering on caricature. The author sketches a personal profile of him within the pages of this volume offering numerous insights into the art of one of the most audacious and poetic creators in the history of Western art. Giovanni Battista di Iacopo di Rossi detto Rosso Fiorentino Firenze 1494 Parigi 1540 è considerato uno dei massimi interpreti del manierismo italiano. Richard Neer's study tracks design and imagery on Athenian vases in four domains: the symposium, with its elaborate riddles and poems; the development of 'naturalistic' techniques, such as foreshortening and shading; the birth of self-portraiture at the end of the sixth century; and the treatment of overtly political subject-matter in the early democracy. In each case, formal ambiguity provided vase painters and their audiences with a means of creating new conceptions of civic identity.
