Ce tableau de grandes dimensions (207 x 340cm) fourmille de détails très réalistes sur l'activité portuaire à cette époque. Parmi les personnages représentés dans la foule, figurent diverses personnalités de l'époque, dont l'artiste ainsi que son fils. Pierre Lacour mit pas moins de deux ans à terminer ce tableau. L'oeuvre fut acquise en 1872 par le Musée des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux, qui avait d'ailleurs été fondé par le peintre lui-même, en 1801. Français

Stated third printing. 12 x 9.5 inches. Purple leatherette imitation leather binding with blind-stamped lettering and designs. Generally unbumped spine head and tail and fairly sharp corners. Illustrated pastedowns/FEPs. Semi-glossy stock. With 65 full-page full-color plates. Scenes of martial conquest and cruelty abound. Gently read. Note that the fully-illustrated dust jacket has much rubbing and shows edge wear at the spine head and tail and at all the corners. A Near Fine copy in a Good Only DJ. 3 lbs. 6 oz. The author has the rather paranoid view that during most of the 20th century "Western" art was somehow assaulting "traditionalist" Iranian painting. "It was under such grave portentious circumstances that several talented truthful artists arisen from among the common population and backed by the perennial legacy of original Iranian art set upon paving the ground for the emergence of a new artistic approach which was to become famous as 'coffee-house' painting."
