(NUMBER THEORY) ROBINSON, Raphael M
Stencils for Solving. mod m.
Berkeley and Los Angeles: University of California Press 1940. First edition. Narrow octavo. 14 pp. Publisher's printed wrappers. Together with 274 IBM punch cards each with the same printed title across the top - "Quadratic Character of m" and with Robinson's name and copyright data. Both housed together in the publisher's cloth case with metallic snap and spine lettering in black. Bit of wear to bottom case joint but overall an excellent copy. From the introduction - "Since quadratic congruences play a fundamental role in the theory of numbers it seems very desirable to have a simple way to solve them even when moderately large numbers are involved. The method of exclusion when combined with a suitable mechanical device such as these stencils provides an easy method for solution" Raphael M. Robinson was a leading figure in mathematics and taught at Berkeley from 1937 to 1973."Even among world-renowned mathematicians Robinson was exceptional. In an age of specialization he contributed significantly to six fields: logic set theory geometry complex analysis number theory and combinatorics; and in a subject often considered a young person's game he continued to produce significant mathematics into his eighties. He also anticipated most of the mathematical community by a good 20 years in making use of computers to obtain results in pure mathematics. In 1951 never having seen one of the new computing machines and working only from a manual he coded the first successful program to test very large numbers for primality. “That the code was without error was and still is a remarkable feat†according to the recently published history of the Institute for Numerical Analysis on the UCLA campus. “In an age where most of our journals are filled with papers which even if good exploit theories for their own sake. it is refreshing and stimulating to encounter one of Robinson's papers†one of the foremost number theorists of the century has written. “In each of them he takes a problem old or new which can be stated in simple and intelligible terms and either solves it or at least adds much that is new. His scholarship is impeccable; it is plain that he never writes until he has thought deeply and until he has sought out every relevant piece of existing knowledge.â€Approximately a quarter of Robinson's publications are distributed among seven different topics in logic and the foundations of mathematics. The one to which he gave most attention was that of undecidable theories an interest that he shared with his wife Julia. By way of illustration the mathematical structure consisting of the integers with their operation of addition is said to have a decidable theory. This means it is possible to program a computer so that given any sentence about the structure in a logically defined language the computer will make a finite computation that determines whether the sentence is true or false. Another mathematical structure with a decidable theory is that of all real numbers with their operations of addition and multiplication. This was shown by Alfred Tarski also of Berkeley But a major mathematical discovery of this century was the fact that that the structure of integers with both operations of addition and multiplication has an undecidable structure because there is no computer program that can decide the truth or falsity of every sentence of its language. In several papers Robinson was able to show that a number of other mathematical theories are also undecidable. His most valuable contribution however was devising a theory with a finite number of axioms that is “essentially undecidableâ€--a concept introduced by Tarski. The book Undecidable Theories Mostowski Robinson and Tarski has provided a tool for researchers to identify undecidable theories in all parts of mathematics. " Calisphere. (Schermann, Rafael).
JAMES B. POND PRESENTS RAFAEL SCHERMANN The Man to whom there are No Secrets! Who will tell of His Most Noted Cases in Psycho-Graphology. Brochure
New York: James B. Pond 1923. 1923. Very good. - A sheet of cream-colored paper printed in blue is folded once to form a four-page brochure 8-3/8 inches high by 5-1/2 inches wide. Illustrated with a portrait of Schermann on the 1st page. There is some darkening to the top right corner of the brochure. Very good. <p>This brochure for a lecture tour reprints two pages of an article by Eugene S. Bagger under the heading "The Amazing Rafael Schermann and His Rare Gift". Some typical Schermann cases are listed on the 4th page along with the topics on which he wll speak: "Handwriting and Destiny" "Love and Crime in Handwriting" and "Anonymous Letter-Writers and Forgers".<p>Rafael Schermann 1879-1945 was a Polish graphologist self-proclaimed psychic and writer. Born in Krakow he settled in Vienna in 1910 and worked for insurance companies. He became an expert graphologist and allegedly possessed powers of clairvoyance second sight and telepathy. Oskar Fischer a professor of pschology at the University of Prague became convinced that Schermann was a genuine psychic. He reported that just by touching handwriting samples sealed in envelopes Schermann had been able to give many accurate character descriptions and statements about the writer. Other researchers were less convinced. (New York: James B. Pond, [1923]. unknown

44 [Rabbi Raphael Ricchi's Most Important Work] Ricchi, Raphael Immanuel ben Abraham Hai
ZEH SEFER MISHNAT HASIDIM
Amsterdam: No Publisher Listed 1740. Hardback. 2nd edition. Period Vellum binding 12mo 132 leaves; 17 cm. In Hebrew. Mayer Sulzberger's copy with his bookplate. Like the Mishnah Mishnat Hasidim is arranged in "Sedarim" which are divided into "massechtot" and subdivided into "perakim." With an introduction entitled: Olam Katan. Includes index. Title-page has ornamental border. <br> Raphael Immanuel ben Abraham Hai Ricchi 1688-1743 was an "Italian rabbi cabalist and poet. After having studied Talmud under Nathan Pinkerle rabbi of Alessandria della Paglia Ricchi became tutor in the houses of several wealthy Jews. He was thus successively employed at Göritz Fiorenzuola Finale in Modena and Venice; in the last-named place he opened a school. He then went to Triest where he was ordained rabbi in 1717 by Hillel Ashkenazi rabbi of Canea after which he was invited to the rabbinate of Görz.<br> Owing to his great love for cabalistic studies and to his ascetic tendencies Ricchi resolved to settle in Palestine. He arrived at Safed in 1718 and during his stay there of two years he occupied himself with the study of the works of Isaac Luria and Hayyim Vital. He was also reordained rabbi by Hayim Abulafia. In 1720 an epidemic broke out in Palestine and Ricchi was compelled to return to Europe. <br> On the voyage he and all his fellow passengers were captured by pirates and brought to Tripolitza whence through the efforts of Abraham Halfon Ricchi and his family were allowed to return to Italy. He then occupied the rabbinate of Florence till 1723 in which year he removed to Leghorn where for twelve years he engaged in business as a merchant. He spent twenty months in travel visiting Smyrna Salonica Constantinople Amsterdam and London and in 1735 set out for Palestine spending two years at Aleppo and three at Jerusalem. In 1741 he returned to Leghorn and in 1743 while traveling in Italy for the purpose of selling his works he was killed by robbers who buried his body by the shore of the Reno. Six days later some Modena Jews discovered the remains and brought them to Cento for burial.<br> Ricchi's most important work is the above-cited 'Mishnat Hasidim' a cabalistic work begun in 1726 at Leghorn. <br> Like the Mishnah it is arranged in orders 'sedarim' which are divided into treatises 'massektot' and subdivided into chapters 'peraim' the names of the six Mishnah orders being taken in a cabalistic sense. But the chief divisions of the work are three termed 'mafteot' besides the introduction entitled ''Olam Kaon' = 'microcosmos' in which Ricchi endeavors to popularize the Cabala. <br> The first main division is the 'Maftea ha-'Olamot' in which the worlds are treated. It contains: 1 the order of Zera'im treating of the cabalistic cosmology and of metaphysics and divided into seven massektot and eighteen chapters; 2 the order Kodashim treating of the realm of emanation 'olam ha-azilut' which is styled 'the holy of holies' and containing twenty massektot and seventy-eight chapters; 3 the order ohorot treating of the three other realms namely those of creative ideas 'beri'ah' creative formations 'yezirah' and creative matter 'asiyah' and divided into nine massektot and twenty-seven chapters; and 4 the order Nezikin treating of the demons and 'kelifot' and divided into six massektot and seventeen chapters. <br> The second main division entitled 'Maftea ha-Neshamot' contains the order Nashim treating of souls in twelve massektot and forty-eight chapters. The third main division entitled 'Mafteah ha-Kawwanot' contains the order Mo'ed divided into fifty-eight massektot and 371 chapters and treating of the Kawwanah. It will be seen that the number of massektot in this work is 112 corresponding to the numerical value of the sacred name ; and the number of chapters 547 equal to the numerical value of Ricchi's name plus twelve the number of its letters. <br> The sources for this work besides the Zohar are mostly Isaac Luria's and Hayyim Vital's writings of which the 'Sefer ha-Gilgulim' 'Kanfe Yonah' and 'Shulhan 'Aruk' may be particularly mentioned. Ricchi drew also from other cabalists" M. Seligsohn in JE 1905.<br> NYU houses their copy in the Mitchell M. Kaplan Collection of Rare Judaica and Hebraica. Aviva Ben-Ur's Ladino catalog list #14. Judge Mayer Sulzberger "was closely associated with Isaac Leeser and assisted that scholar in editing The Occident contributing to it a partial translation of Maimonides' "Moreh Nebukim." In Ottoman script Old Turkish in Arabic letters. 4 56 72 92 32 92 41 31 8 25 p. two full paged b/w plates. First and only edition of detailed account of the Lotus case an international legal case involving France and Turkey in front of the Permanent Court of International Justice compiled by Spanish judge Altavira y Crevea and translated by Turkish Distinguished Professor of International Law Menemenlizâde Edhem 1878-1965. The case is known for establishing the so-called "Lotus principle" in international law says that sovereign states may act in any way they wish so long as they do not contravene an explicit prohibition. The Bozkurt-Lotus case decided by the Permanent Court of International Justice PCIJ in 1927 became a landmark in international law especially regarding issues of jurisdiction and the extent of a state's rights to assert criminal jurisdiction over foreign nationals. The case arose from the collision between the S.S. Lotus a French vessel and the S.S. Bozkurt a Turkish ship near the Greek island of Mytilene on 2 August 1926. After the collision eight Turkish nationals aboard the Bozkurt drowned. In response Turkey arrested and charged the captain of the Lotus Captain Demons for causing the deaths and damages to the Turkish vessel. The Turkish courts condemned him asserting their right to try him for the incident even though the collision occurred in international waters and involved a French ship. France contested the jurisdiction of Turkish courts over the captain arguing that Turkey could not claim the right to prosecute a foreign national for actions committed on a foreign vessel in international waters. France brought the case before the PCIJ to challenge Turkey's legal authority. The court ruled in favour of Turkey emphasizing that under international law there was no general prohibition against a state asserting jurisdiction over crimes involving foreign nationals even when the incident occurred outside its territorial waters. The PCIJ's decision established the principle that absent an explicit prohibition in international law states are free to exercise jurisdiction in cases where they have a legitimate interest even if the matter involves foreign nationals and occurred in international waters. This judgment reinforced the notion of state sovereignty in determining jurisdiction and highlighted the extent to which international law permits states to assert legal authority over incidents involving foreign nationals under certain conditions. However it also raised important questions about extraterritorial jurisdiction and the balance between state sovereignty and international cooperation in legal matters. "The Lotus principle or Lotus approach usually considered a foundation of international law says that sovereign states may act in any way they wish so long as they do not contravene an explicit prohibition. The application of this principle - an outgrowth of the Lotus case - to future incidents raising the issue of jurisdiction over people on the high seas was changed by article 11 of the Convention on the High Seas. The convention held in Geneva in 1958 laid emphasis on the fact that only the flag state or the state of which the alleged offender was a national had jurisdiction over sailors regarding incidents occurring on the high seas." Wikipedia. It is the first legal Turkish success achieved in the international arena after the proclamation of the Republic. Karakus. In court the Turkish side was represented by Mahmut Esat Bozkurt who was the Minister of Justice at the time. When Turkey adopted the formal surname system in 1934 Mahmut Esat chose the surname "Bozkurt" as a reminder of the landmark case. Sources: Karakus H.Burak. 2013.
