Das von ihm vorgelegte Werk liefert die Ergebnisse seiner fast zwanzigjährigen leidenschaftlichen Forschungsarbeit an der Aufhellung der bis dato noch immer ungeklärten Phänomene eines chinesischen "Urkaisertums". Wenn es nach kompetenter Bezeugung "eines der größten Verdienste der europäischen Sinologie der Neuzeit" gewesen ist, einiges Licht in jene verwirrten Verhältnisse gebracht zu haben, so setzt Münke diese Bemühungen eines Granet, Haloun, Maspero, Karlgren u. a. fort, und zwar legt er eine völlig neue Darstellung vor, die nicht aus den Übersetzungen oder aus der Sekundärliteratur, auch nicht der chinesischen, gewonnen, sondern in philologischhistorischer Klein- und Feinarbeit aus den altchinesischen Primärquellen erarbeitet wurde und über die der Verfasser sich mit der westlichen wie mit der chinesischen Sinologie streitbar auseinandersetzt. Chr.), unein-geschränkt zur Verfügung stand; denn Altostasiens Literatur war mit dem Makel der Unglaubhaftigkeit vorurteilsbefrachteter "Kaiser"legenden behaftet, mundtot gemacht durch Verzicht auf strenge Überprüfung hergebrachter Übersetzerklischees. Die Karikatur frühchines. Denkstrukturen, in Worte umgesetzt, lautet: Das Altschrifttum kennt keine unverfälschten Mythen, sondern weithin nur Legenden über vielleicht vollhistorische, eventuell teilhistorische, gewiß nicht ganz so, wie erzählt wird, am Ende gar erfundene Kaiser und Heroen des 3. und 2. Jt.s v. Chr., derer einige mit dem Aufkommen des Konfuzianismus und des Taoismus in eine Art Ersatzgötter, in heilige Herrscher und unsterbliche Genien, umgedeutet wurden. Einprägsamstes Exempel für die "Verfälschung echter Sage durch die alten Chinesen": Unter Berufung auf Henri Maspero, "Legendes mythologiques dans le Chou-king [Shu-king]", Journal Asiatique 1924, wird schon seit Jahrzehnten repetiert, daß Hi Ho eine Sonnengöttin gewesen sei ("Hi Ho gebar die 10 Sonnen", Shan-hai-king), die von den Verfassern des Shu-king zum Astronomiebeamten des "Kaisers empereur emperor" Yao, "3. Jt. v. Chr.", historisiert, euhemerisiert wurde. Nun galt das Shai-hai-king als relativ später Text, das Shu-king hingegen als archaische, von den Chinesen in Ehren gehaltene Sammlung kanonischer Schriften (king). Mythologie, schizophrener Entfremdung mißtrauend, muß berücksichtigen, daß Yao im Shu-king ein ti rjfr genannt wird, muß der Tatsache Rechnung tragen, daß "ti" gar wohl den "Kaiser" von China bezeichnet, aber doch auch (wer vor und nach Maspero wußte das nicht?!), selbstverständlich schon in den ältesten Zeugnissen chines. It plumbs the dark matter of the human condition, placing front and center transgressive individuals and groups traditionally demonized by Confucian annalists and largely shunned by modern scholars. The work endeavors to apprehend the actions and motivations of these men and women, whose conduct deviated from normative social, cultural, and religious expectations. Early chapters examine how core Confucian bonds such as those between parents and children, and ruler and minister, were compromised, even severed. The living did not always reverently pay homage to the dead, children did not honor their parents with due filiality, a decorous distance was not necessarily observed between sons and stepmothers, and subjects often pursued their own interests before those of the ruler or the state. The elasticity of ritual and social norms is explored: Chapters on brazen Eastern Han (25–220) mourners and deviant calligraphers, audacious falconers, volatile Tang (618–907) Buddhist monks, and drunken Song (960–1279) literati reveal social norms treated not as universal truths but as debated questions of taste wherein political and social expedience both determined and highlighted individual roles within larger social structures and defined what was and was not aberrant. A Confucian predilection to “valorize [the] civil and disparage the martial” and Buddhist proscriptions on killing led literati and monks alike to condemn the cruelty and chaos of war. The book scrutinizes cultural attitudes toward military action and warfare, including those surrounding the bloody and capricious world of the Zuozhuan (Chronicle of Zuo), the relentless violence of the Five Dynasties and Ten States periods (907–979), and the exploits of Tang warrior priests—a series of studies that complicates the rhetoric by situating it within the turbulent realities of the times. By the end of this volume, readers will come away with the understanding that behaving badly in early and medieval China was not about morality but perspective, politics, and power.‎

Internally a surprisingly fresh copy collating complete with adverts to front and rear: 12 138 16. Introducing a range of "native products" to Americans living in the region the cookery reflects a growing need for nutritious recipes and supply chain substitutions in wartime. The sole copy on the market OCLC reports only 7 copies.<br/><br/>The only Chinese-published cookbook "to deal only with native products and recipes that could be made from them." In their preface to this new cookery the committee for the Women's Auxiliary explains in clear terms what sets their cookery apart. "This book was definitely war product. It was prepared with two ideas in view: that of utilizing local products as substitutes for the home imported foodstuffs and secondly that of reducing the cost of living. It was different from all other cook books that had been published in China for foreigners' use in that it dealt only with native products and recipes that could be made from them." While some recipes are titles in English only the compilers included Cantonese translations wherever possible in addition to including a glossary at the rear called Hints for the Housekeeper as well as a List of Terms Necessary in Food Preparation which both provide translations and pronunciations for Cantonese words related to food and household cleaning products. During and after WWI Shanghai had become a space of rich and problematic interactions between cultures. In addition to rising Western military forces its reputation as the "Paris of the East" drove in American and British tourists while later large residential areas were being built in the north due to war concessions. Opium smuggling prostitution and a spreading wealth gap caused friction. The Women's Auxiliary composed of intelligent and educated members with a cultural appreciation for these fluctuations as well as for the culture into which they had migrated sought to use the kitchen as a positive space for the exchange of food language and ideas.
