Hsiau Ling ti, elfter Herrscher aus dem Hause der Hou Han, hatte sie von dem angesehenen Kalligraphen Tsai Yung in schön geformten Schriftzeichen aufzeichnen lassen, um sie durch die Gravierung in Stein allen Menschen zugänglich zu machen. Acht lange Jahre, von 175 bis 183, hatten sich geübte Steinschneider dieser Arbeit mit Fleiß hingegeben, bis das große Werk vollendet war. Mit der Errichtung dieser Steintafeln sahen die chinesischen Gelehrten und Beamten einen von ihnen lange gehegten Wunsch erfüllt. Waren sie beim Studium der Klassiker bisher auf die mündliche Übermittlung mit allen sich daraus ergebenden Ungenauigkeiten oder auf handschriftliche Kopien auf Bambusstreifen angewiesen, in die sich ebenfalls unvermeidlich viele Fehler einschlichen, so boten ihnen die vor der Akademie aufgereihten Steintafeln nun endlich die Möglichkeit einer zuverlässigen offiziellen Auskunft über die von den alten Weisen überlieferten Lehren, auf denen das Denken, die Sitten und die Gesetze des Han=Reiches fußten. Die größte Bedeutung dieser steinernen Urkunden aber lag darin, daß die Erfindung des Papiers es nunmehr auch erlaubte, sich von den in Stein gravierten Texten Abdrucke herzustellen, die man mitnehmen konnte und die sich schnell und weit verbreiten ließen. Nur allzu verständlich war deswegen die Anziehungskraft, die diese über und über mit Schriftzeichen bedeckten Steine ausübten. Aus allen Teilen des Landes eilten Gouverneure und Präfekten, Gelehrte und Studenten in die Hauptstadt, und täglich strömten viele Menschen zum Hungtu-Tor, um sich Abzüge von den >Steinklassikern< zu sichern. Der Bericht über dieses Ereignis ist die früheste Nachricht über die Herstellung von Steinabreibungen in China und damit über eine in diesem Lande erfundene Kunst, die wir nach unserer heutigen Kenntnis als das älteste Verfahren einer druckgraphischen Vervielfältigung von Inschriften und bildlichen Darstellungen betrachten dürfen. Wenn auch den Stelen der Klassiker in Loyang die Aufstellung vieler Inschriften steine im Lande vorausging, wie auch die Technik der Abreibungen auf Papier nicht erst im Zusammenhang mit dieser zur Festigung der Staatsdoktrin getroffenen Maß= nähme aufgekommen sein kann, so ist doch sicher, daß vor dem Jahre 175 in China auf dem Gebiet der Steingravierungen für die Öffentlichkeit kein Werk von einem solchen Umfang und von einer so weitreichenden Bedeutung geschaffen worden ist. Der Brauch, Inschriften in Felsen einzumeißeln oder beschriftete Monolithe aufzustellen, läßt sich bis in die Dschou-Dynastie zurückverfolgen. Zur Zeit der Han-Dynastie wurde er aus den verschiedensten Anlässen bereits recht häufig geübt. Die Inschriften hatten wichtige Erlasse von Herrschern zum Inhalt, sie bezogen sich auf Verdienste ziviler Beamter oder auf militärische Heldentaten, und sie hielten die Erinnerung an bedeutende Reisen oder Bauunternehmen fest. ?
