‎QIANLONG 乾隆, Emperor of China‎

‎Yu xuan Tang-Song shi chun 御é¸å”宋詩醇 Finest Pieces of Tang and Song Poetry Selected by the Emperor‎

‎47 juan & two vols. of index in 25 vols. 8vo orig. wrappers some light browning throughout. China: after 1760.<br /> <BR> <BR> An early edition first printed in 1751 of this selection of poetry by eight famous writers from the Tang 618-907 CE and Northern and Southern Song 960-1279 CE periods. Nominally the collection was made by the Qianlong emperor who was himself a productive poet. If one goes by the number of poems published in Qianlong’s name the emperor “was by far the most prolific poet in Chinese history†he published more than 42000 pieces†Fang Chao-ying “Hung-Li†371. Those poems probably were not all his creation however; the man had an empire to run. Similarly this collection of the poetry of earlier masters probably owed a lot to Grand Secretary Liang Shizheng æ¢è©©æ£ 1697-1763 minister of the Board of Personnel who headed the team of compilers. The woodblock printing reproduces the original calligraphy of the “imperial brush†however.<br /> <BR> <BR> The poets in the collection include Li Bai 701-762 Du Fu 712-770 Bai Juyi 772-846 and Han Yu 768-824 of the Tang as well as Su Shi 1037-1101 and Lu You 1125-1210 of the Song. In the selection of poets and poems the compilers put emphasis on the expression of “filial loyalty†zhongxiao å¿ å a core value for the Confucian monarchy. The styles of the poets were attributed to their lived experience so that the poems became seen as representing their character.<br /> <BR> <BR> The collection has been criticized for focusing on only the biggest names of the Tang and Song periods featuring a selection of only eight poets. Yet the collection was very influential. Its publication preceded the reinstitution of a poetry element in the civil service examinations which retroactively drew attention to the book. Notably this fact was highlighted by the famous statesman and zealous Neo-Confucian Chen Hongmou 1696-1771 then governor of Jiangsu when he requested and received permission to reprint it in the province in 1760 whence this copy; see below. Furthermore in two separate sessions of the civil service examinations during the Qianlong reign — one local examination and one high-level examination — the collection was mentioned in the policy section of the exam. Prospective candidates would have taken note of such mentions and this collection liley ended up on the reading lists of many hopefuls. For a time the collection was prescribed reading for new Hanlin Bachelors at the Qing court and among the reading population writ large it helped establish Su Shi’s and Lu You’s reputations as poets. <br /> <BR> <BR> The book was finished in 1750 and printed the following year. As mentioned above it was reprinted in Jiangsu in 1760. It is possible that this copy belongs to this reprint edition even though the actual printing using the same blocks might be later. The book was reprinted again as a woodblock printing in Zhejiang in 1877. Later copies based on this edition carry the date 1877 after the imperial preface.<br /> <BR> <BR> Very good set preserved in four hantao. Minor spotting here and there and occasional light dampstaining.<br /> <BR> <BR> References<br /> <BR> <BR> Blog post by “Shanben guji†entitled “Shanben guji huozi taoyin ben Yuxuan Tang Song wenchun shichun kaolüe†https://www.sohu.com/a/592207984_562249.<br /> <BR> <BR> Fang Chao-ying. “Hung-Li.†In Eminent Chinese of the Ch’ing Period. ‎QIANLONG, Emperor of China (1711-1799) Dazhang YANG (fl1770-1790). l. 17‎

‎Triumphal Feast for the return of General Fukang'an after the suppression of Taiwan from Pingding Taiwan deshung tu Victorious Battle Prints of the Taiwan Campaign.‎

‎Beijing: The Chinese Imperial Court c.1790. Original copper-engraving 50 x 86.7 cm overall sheet 54 x 90.5 cm showing the imperial reception of the victorious army and its commander the military officer Fukang'an d. 1796 from the extremely rare set of the Qianlong battle prints relating to the Taiwan Rebellion 1787-1788. Slight dust-soiling small tear without loss and minor crease to right hand outer margin generally very good. The Qianlong battle prints are a series of prints from copper engravings dating from the second half of the 18th century which provide an extremely interesting example of the interaction of Chinese and European artistic practices. The prints were commissioned by the Qianlong emperor of the Qing dynasty 1644-1911 who ruled from 1735 to 1796 and depict his military campaigns - known as The Ten Great Campaigns Shiquan Wugong - in China's inner provinces and along the country's frontiers. The master illustrations for the earliest of the these engravings were large paintings executed by European missionary artists employed at that time at the court in Beijing. These artists include Italian Jesuit Giuseppe Castiglione 1688-1766 French Jesuit Jean-Denis Attiret 1702-68 Bohemian Jesuit Ignatius Sichelbarth 1708-80 and the Italian Augustinian missionary Jean-Damascène Sallusti d. 1781. The engravings of the first set of 16 paintings Suite de seize estampes representant les conquetes de l'Empereur de la Chine Paris 1767-1774 commemorating three campaigns against the Dzungars and the pacification of XinJian 1755-1759 were not produced in China but rather in Paris at that time home to the best European artisans working in this technique. The emperor even decreed that the work should emulate the style of the Augsburg copper-engraver Georg Philipp Rugendas the Elder 1666--1742 whose work he knew. Small-scale copies of the paintings by Castiglione and his Beijing colleagues were sent to Paris to be transferred on to copperplates printed and then sent back to China along with the plates and prints. To commemorate later military campaigns additional sets of engravings were executed in Peking by Chinese apprentices trained by the Jesuits and differ markedly in style and elaborateness from those of the Paris series; the print offered here from the campaign relating to the Taiwan Rebellion 1787-1788 is an example of one of these engravings produced in China by Chinese artists. They are easy to to be quickly identified as they have calligraphic poems in Chinese composed and written by the Qianlong Emperor unlike the French ones which have the typical imprint of artist and engraver beneath the image. The Taiwan Rebellion 1787-1788: In 1786 Taiwan's Heaven and Earth Society comprising Ming loyalists rose up in revolt under their self-proclaimed king Lin Shuang-wen. His army soon comprised some 50000 people and by 1787 the rebels occupied almost the entire part of southern Taiwan. The initial Qing troops sent to suppress the rebellion were poorly organised and were easily defeated by the insurgents. Eventually the Qing court sent General Fukang'an with 20000 reinforcements which being better equipped and more disciplined quickly suppressed the rebels capturing the ringleader Lin Shuang-wen. Impressed by the wall paintings and the engravings he had commissioned from the Jesuits at the imperial court to commemorate his central Asian victories against the Dzungars see above Emperor Qianlong commissioned similar commemorative prints to be made of his campaign against the Taiwanese. By the time of the Taiwan campaign however all four of the Jesuit painters who had worked on the first series had died. Therefore Chinese court painters trained by the Jesuits were entrusted with the task. The scenes in the present lot were designed by Jia Quan and Li Ming who were used to working in the Jesuit tradition. They are dated 1787 1788 and 1789 with the series of prints being published in 1790. Thus these engravings provide an extremely interesting example of the interaction of Chinese and European artistic concepts as well as an indication of the fascinating relationship of the Jesuit artists in Beijing with the Qing court. Qianlong's battle copper prints were just one of the means the Manchu emperor employed to document his campaigns of military expansion and suppression of regional unrest. They served to glorify his rule and to exert ideological control over Chinese historiography. Seen in their political context the Qianlong prints represent a distinct and exceptional pictorial genre and are telling examples of the self-dramatization of imperial state power examples of which are obviously found in multiple cultures. The East Asia Department of the Berlin State Library holds a set of five series with a total of 64 prints. Rare. A complete copy of the Qianlong battle prints relating to the Taiwan Rebellion from the library of Norman Bobins fetched £81900 at Christies in July 2023. ‎QIANLONG; Qianlong Emperor of China 1710 1798‎

‎Four Hand-Coloured Copper-plate Etchings from the Conquest of China.‎

‎1775. QIANLONG EMPEROR OF CHINA 1736-1796. Suite of four engravings depicting the conquests of the Qianlong Emperor. From the suite of sixteen engraved plates. Printed in Paris under the direction of Charles-Nicholas Cochin. Broadsheets image size: 515 x 890 mm. Preserved in the contemporary French green paper mounts with black ink outline borders. Professionally framed. With the original French printed labels describing the individual engravings affixed to back of frames. Paris 1769-1774. These four contemporary hand-coloured engravings represent individual scenes from the exceedingly rare series of sixteen engravings commissioned by the Qianlong Emperor to commemorate the victory of his 1755-1760 military campaigns against the Western Mongols. The four plates are: I. "General Fou Te Accepts the Surrender of the Ili" showing the triumphal march of the Emperor and his general to Beijing. Drawn by Sichelbart and engraved by B.L. Prévost in 1769 Pirazzoli-t'Serstevens 1; II. "The victory of Khorgos." in the Spring of 1758 against the forces of Amoursana. Drawn by J. D Attiret cut by C. N. Cochin and engraved by J. Ph. Le Bas in 1774. Pirazzoli-t'Serstevens 4; III. "The great victory of the Qurman." on February 3 1759 when the Chinese general Fou-te with only 600 soldiers defeated an army of 5000 Muslims. Drawn by Damasceno and engraved by A. de St. Aubin in 1770. Pirazzoli-t'Serstevens 8. IV. "The Emperor Gives a Victory Banquet to the Officers and Soldiers who have distinguished themselves in battle" at Tseu-kuang-ko the Imperial Palace Gardens Beijing on July 5 1754. Drawn by Castiglione and engraved by J. Ph. le Bas 1770 Pirazzoli-t'Serstevens 16. These large Chinese-French prints are among the most impressive works ever produced by the method of copper engraving. This is the first series of engraved plates to document the conquests of the Qianlong Emperor. They represented an amalgam of Chinese imagery Italian interpretation and Parisian copperplate engraving at its apogee. The drawings were supplied by Jesuit artists attached to the Emperor's court in Beijing. Upon completion they were shipped to France for engraving as the craft was unknown in China. After the Emperor was shown battle prints by the Augsburg artist Georg Philipp Rugendas 1666-1743 he wished to see his military conquests recorded in intaglio prints as well. He therefore ordered his Jesuit court painters Giuseppe Castiglione 1688-1766 called "Lang Shining" Jean Denis Attiret 1702-1768 "Wang Zhicheng" Ignaz Sichelbart 1708-1780 "Ai Qimeng" and Giovanni Damasceno Sallusti i.e. Joannes Damascenus a SS. Concepcione d. 1781 later bishop of Beijing called "An Deyi" to prepare sketches for the prints which they did in 1764 and 1765. Four of the drawings had been completed by the time of Castiglione's death when the decision was made to send the work to France via the ships of the Compagnie des Indes. According to the Emperor's decree no expense was to be spared. The first four drawings reached Paris in the autumn of 1766 and the remaining twelve in July 1767. The Marquis de Marigny director of the Academie Royale de Peinture et Sculpture decreed that the work should be carried out under the supervision of Charles-Nicholas Cochin 'fils' 1715-1790. As the French paper manufacturers did not have paper of the desired proportions the paper-merchant Prudhomme was ordered to make it to custom; the new size was called Grand Louvois. The copperplates were imported from England. Cochin chose Beauvais for the actual printing of the sheets on the grounds that he was "the only one who can be completely trusted both regarding his talents as well as his honesty which is well-known." The work proceeded slowly; standards of the highest quality were called for and some of the pictures especially the one by Sallusti needed careful editing. The original order was for 100 copies of each print but by 1768 this figure was increased to 200 copies so that at least 100 would survive the journey back to China ! -- however several authorities claim that many copies were lost at sea. In any event the final delivery was not shipped until 1775 occasioned in part by the difficulty the printers had producing a uniform series of prints from drawings by different artists. Three of the initial drawings were made by Attiret six by Damasceno one by Sichelbart and at least two by Castiglione; the remaining are unsigned but have been attributed to Castiglione by C. & M. Beurdeley and others. The engravers were L.J. Masquelier 1 J. Aliamet 2 J. Ph. Le Bas 5 A. St.-Aubin 2 F.D. Née 1 B.L. Prevost 2 P.P. Choffard 2 and N. de Launay 1. The Emperor's instructions stated that all the impressions were to be sent to him along with the original copper plates. However there is plentiful evidence that prints were pulled for the King of France and influential persons in Paris as well. Most of the surviving sets and individual prints appear to belong to this surreptitious group. The above series is not only a landmark in the history of Chinese and European art but also testifies to the direct artistic cooperation between China and Europe in the eighteenth century. It has been a common misconception that China was only interested in itself and detested the foreigners -- here the Emperor himself proved the contrary. VERY RARE IMPRESSIONS WITH CONTEMPORARY FRENCH HAND-COLOURING. The complete set of sixteen black and white engravings or a few individual prints from this set have come onto the market for sale only rarely. We can locate no other examples of any of the prints with contemporary colouring having been for sale or in public or private collections. PROVENANCE: Robert Barnwell Roosevelt 1829-1906 the uncle of Theodore Roosevelt and great-uncle of Eleanor Roosevelt. He was an early conservationist and worked for the protection of waterways. Roosevelt served in Congress and was later appointed to a diplomatic post in the Netherlands. He is credited with influencing his nephew Theodore Roosevelt to become a conservationist. ‎QING CHINA.‎

‎Manuscript recording a voyage to China and impressions of its major cities.‎

‎At sea & China: 1842-48. This ground is under English control though their authority is might makes right An American second mate's eyewitness account embellished with his illustrations of China in the wake of the First Opium War. Venturing east on a Jardine Matheson specie and opium runner he becomes an old China hand and an astute observer writing of early colonial Hong Kong and Shanghai trade arrangements and the sights and sounds of the coast. The first half consisting of diary entries written during the voyage from the United States describes how he became an adventurer almost by accident. "On the 1st of Sept. 1842 being in Boston and out of employ having spent all my money and bored my friends until they were tired of me I shipped in the Schr Gazell" p. 1. The Gazelle a watercolour of which opens the manuscript was an 115-ton Aberdeen-built schooner bought by Jardine Matheson from the opium merchant Robert Bennet Forbes. On 19 September 1842 it is loaded with guns two six-pounders and a nine-pounder muskets and its cargo of nine boxes of specie putting to sea with a company of nine. The Gazelle's path is recorded through 30 pages of detailed entries many giving latitudes and longitudes. He writes of variable weather entailing risk of drowning fish and barracuda dolphins and the ship's resident dog which derives much amusement from catching fish flopping onto the deck. Crossing the Equator brings back memories of his line-crossing ceremony when he received on King Neptune's orders "a confounded shaving - tar and grease for lather and an iron tool for a razor. I was deluged with about 20 buckets of water" pp. 15-17. Rounding the cape he cannot help "thinking what an eggshell I had ventured to double the cape in an American Pilot boat" p. 22. Their impending arrival in China is signalled by encounters with the American merchant vessel Morrison - operating between New York and Canton - and the Gazelle reaches Macao on 22 February 1843. The remainder of the manuscript records his impressions of China. These take the form of recollections written in the late 1840s - this retrospection is measured and evidently the product of considered thought rather than impulse. Macao their first port of call "is the most healthy place in China and much the pleasantest" p.31 but in the wake of the First Opium War it has been replaced by Hong Kong as the centre of the China trade. Following their arrival the Gazelle is reassigned from transporting specie to running opium among Macao Hong Kong and China's coastal cities affording the writer a hefty pay rise and opportunities to explore new parts of the country in the coming years. His memories of Hong Kong as it was in 1844 are vivid. He remembers the gunshot in the late evening that signalled the beginning of a curfew for all Chinese residents and recalls the anchorage at Whampoa the home to a fleet of 12 European opium vessels each manned with 100 men and presenting "a most formidable appearance" p. 34. Accompanying this description are pencil drawings of the different boats found on the bustling Pearl River. Hong Kong's local inhabitants do not make a positive impression. "The Chinese are the most adept thieves I ever saw. As I once heard a sailor say they would steal your teeth and come next day for your gums. They even come on board of ships at the risk of being shot and steal things off the deck" p. 36. Ships at anchor are inundated with washerwomen vendors and tailors the long braided queues of the men causing much confusion to the European eye. A particularly memorable character is "Boston Jack" the Chinese man who arranges everything that American ships might need while in port. "He made one voyage to Boston about 45 years ago and on his return became a comprador having got a smattering of English and by dealing honestly has amassed a large fortune. He is a fine old man about 73 or 4 and speaks very good English. He keeps only 6 wives" p. 38. Space is also devoted in the manuscript to the fine beef and the abundance of tropical fruits and vegetables that the region has to offer. His work for Jardine Matheson takes him to many of the most important cities in China. Time in Canton offers the chance to see the contrast between the hong quarter and the squalor of the rest of the city. Near the Bogue of Tigris nine large forts equipped with 1000 guns built in the wake of the war face incoming vessels. Concerning Amoy he records and sketches in pencil the distinctive appearance of its junks while Chusan stands out for its industrious citizenry food and many statues and idols including several that he believes mirror Biblical scenes. Shanghai with its newly established foreign concessionary areas is now a centre of opium trading receiving 1400 chests per month although foreign ships are confined to Suzhou Creek and cannot yet enter the port. He sketches one of the 3000 junks in the city's waters at any one time as well as a rough map and notes that the city's inhabitants are much preferred over their Canton compatriots for their "civil and obliging" manner p. 48. "All the merchants live on the English ground it being more convenient to trade. There are from 40 to 50 European residences here and a very large trade which is gradually insuring sic a great deal of opium is bartered here for tea & silks" p. 49. The right to trade is backed by force: "this ground is under English control though their authority is might makes right" ibid. The manuscript ends mid-sentence on its 50th page but not before the writer has described in detail the use of Spanish dollars in Shanghai and the materials used to build houses in the city. There is no indication of his subsequent pursuits or whether he lived to see the China he knew - a country on the cusp of colonial modernity - pass into history. Octavo notebook 252 x 165 mm. Opening full-page watercolour 12 illustrations and plan in pencil. Original blue linen pink patterned endpapers edges sprinkled blue 49 pages neatly written in black ink 38 unused blanks. Notebook worn and shaken with sewing loose a few closed tears internally touching a few letters only. A very good example. unknown‎
