Recourant à des exemples concrets, des dialogues allégoriques, ironiques, aporétiques, il fait vivre la pensée chinoise en l'incarnant. Des Entretiens de Confucius aux grands auteurs de stratégie et d'art de la guerre et de la politique, Sunzi et Hanfei, en passant par le poète anarchiste Xikong, Jean Levi cherche à combler le fossé entre les philosophies occidentales et orientales par une réflexion sur le langage et la dialectique, mais sans sombrer dans un comparatisme absurde et en évitant des rapprochements qui ne seraient que poudre aux yeux. 8vo, br. ed. pp.v-367. Synopsis: Lü's Commentaries of History (Lü Shi Chun Qiu) is an important historical document. It was compiled by Lü Buwei, the Prime Minister of the state of Qin near the end of the Warring States Period (475-221 B.C.), a period of Chinese history marked by a series of chaotic wars between rival states. The purpose of compiling the book was to provide a guide to government for the future Qin ruler. It was a period when the Confucian, Taoist, Moist and Legalist schools of philosophy prevailed. But instead of following any particular school of thought, Lü adopted what he considered to be useful. His writings thus contain a wealth of political and and philosophical ideas as well as commentaries on moral standards, human conduct, cultural undertakings, science, astronomy, calendar-making, medicine, agriculture and other subjects. For an historical window into the pre to early Qin period, these writings are indispensable. About the Author: Tang Bowen graduated from Peking University and was a senior English editor and translator at the Foreign Langauges Press, Beijing. He has edited and translated numerous works of Chinese classics in literature, history, and philosophy.

Er wählte Georges Staunton (1737-1801) als Sekretär und Stellvertreter auch wenn die Popularität von dessen Beschreibung der ersten großen britischen Chinareise kaum darüber hinwegzutäuschen vermochte, daß den Briten vieles im Reich der Mitte unklar und dunkel blieb. Immerhin enthält Stauntons Werk die ersten ausführlichen Nachrichten über den Pei-ho, den die Gesandtschaft im August 1793 bis zur Stadt Tung-tschóu hinauffuhr. Unser Exemplar der ersten französischen Übersetzung leider ohne den vierten Textband mit den 3 gefalteten Karten! Cordier: Bibliotheca Sinica 2384f. Die Broschuren mit stärkeren Gebrauchsspuren, jedoch unbeschnitten und damit zum Aufbinden geeignet. Der kleinformatige Atlas mit Besitzvermerk von 1888. Insgesamt handelt es sich um ein noch ordentliches Exemplar, dessen beiliegender Tafelband einen guten Eindruck von Land und Leuten Chinas zur damaligen Zeit vermittelt.
