MATHEWS GORDON
Ghetto At The Center Of The World: Chungking Mansions Hong Kong Ghetto At The Center Of The World
University of Chicago Press Chicago and London: 2011. Softcover. Brand new book. There is nowhere else in the world quite like Chungking Mansions a dilapidated seventeen-story commercial and residential structure in the heart of Hong Kong's tourist district. A remarkably motley group of people call the building home; Pakistani phone stall operators Chinese guesthouse workers Nepalese heroin addicts Indonesian sex workers and traders and asylum seekers from all over Asia and Africa live and work thereeven backpacking tourists rent rooms. In short it is possibly the most globalized spot on the planet. But as Ghetto at the Center of the World shows us a trip to Chungking Mansions reveals a far less glamorous side of globalization. A world away from the gleaming headquarters of multinational corporations Chungking Mansions is emblematic of the way globalization actually works for most of the world's people. Gordon Mathews's intimate portrayal of the building's polyethnic residents lays bare their intricate connections to the international circulation of goods money and ideas. We come to understand the day-to-day realities of globalization through the stories of entrepreneurs from Africa carting cell phones in their luggage to sell back home and temporary workers from South Asia struggling to earn money to bring to their families. And we see that this so-called ghettowhich inspires fear in many of Hong Kong's other residents despite its low crime rateis not a place of darkness and desperation but a beacon of hope. Gordon Mathews's compendium of riveting stories enthralls and instructs in equal measure making Ghetto at the Center of the World not just a fascinating tour of a singular place but also a peek into the future of life on our shrinking planet. "In this wonderful book Gordon Mathews takes on an intriguing project: daily life as it is lived articulated dreamed denied regretted and defended in a rather rundown but very public building in Hong Kong. The residents of Chungking Mansions are economically blocked from the rest of the city and often racially discriminated against so how do such marginalized people survive much less prosper This is the conundrum at the heart of Ghetto at the Center of the World. Mathews tackles it by providing a vivid description of the people who live their lives in the building's dimly lit hallways restaurants and shops and by analyzing the larger material and political forces at work. The resulting account is as informative and revealing as it is entertaining."William Jankowiak author of Sex Death and Hierarchy in a Chinese City "Hong Kong's Chungking Mansions is the most notorious flophouse in Asia. . . . The shabby tenement is today as much about global commerce as tourism. What the building should be renowned for argues Gordon Mathews in his fluid and enjoyable field study Ghetto at the Center of the World is the ingenious way 'low-end globalists' eke out profits from petit arbitrage. . . . It reads like a first-rate business book."Wall Street Journal University of Chicago Press, Chicago and London: 2011 paperback

Mathews, Jay; Mathews, Linda
One Billion: A China Chronicle
25 cm. From John K. Fairbank - The New York Review of Books The sympathetic yet critical balance of attitude that distinguishes this book no doubt reflects the authors' experience living together in China. . . .{When they} married, and had two children, they mixed collaboration and competition. By living in China as a family they were in an unusual position to explore nooks and crannies of the society around them. . . . {The Mathews's} book, which is really a journalists' effort (the best I know of) . . . captures that elusive but ubiquitous entity known as 'Chinese culture' or what makes theChinese tick. From Donald Klein - The Christian Science Monitor (Eastern edition) The Mathewses bring solid credentials to their journalistic tasks and to this new book on life in China today. For example, they often cite research that is usually known only to China-scholars. Yet, these findings are frequently tested and humanized by the Mathewses' reporting. . . . Much of the book deals with the great struggle to preserve the family (not the rights of the individual as in the West) against the encroachments of the seemingly all-powerfulstate. The reader comes away with a renewed respect for the dogged tenacity of the family structure. . . . 'One Billion' contains an unexpected bonus. The Mathewses were the first American correspondents to have young children in China, and thus the book is sprinkled with striking observations about childrenthat a childless journalist might never have noticed. China is too importantto be left to the specialists. Books such as 'One Billion'--thoughtful and very well written--deserve a wide audience. From Judith K. Davison - The New York Times Book Review Conscientious organization saves 'One Billion' from chaos, but just barely. The authors start with the first principles of Chinese life--primacy of human feelings, ties to family and village, connections to the past, pride in being Chinese. Then they 'wrap together . . . the weary contrasts between city and country life. . . . They are at their best describing the central fact of life in China--population pressure--and examining its consequences (underemployment, low productivity, inadequate housing, family planning, which extends tosterilization and abortion). The farther afield they range, the more confusing their account becomes. 'One Billion' is the authors' testament to 'the experience of a lifetime,' but the reader would have been more satisfied with less. ISBN: 039450982X

Mattis Peter
Analyzing the Chinese Military: A Review Essay and Resource Guide on the People’s Liberation Army
8vo, br. ed. pp.141. This monograph reviews recent books on the Chinese People?s Liberation Army (PLA) to help the generalist or student become familiar with existing evaluations and identify best practices for assessing Chinese military affairs. The structure is deliberately designed to help readers build a solid foundation for understanding the PLA and develop a progressively more sophisticated perspective. Ten appendixes provide additional resources including an extensive bibliography on PLA and Chinese security affairs as well as short guides on where to find regular PLA-related analysis, what Chinese-language sources to acquire, and whose analysis to follow. Peter Mattis is a Fellow in the China Program at The Jamestown Foundation, where served as editor of the foundation’s China Brief, a biweekly electronic journal on greater China, from 2011 to 2013. He previously worked as an international affairs analyst for the U.S. Government for four years. Prior to entering government service, Mr. Mattis worked as a research associate at the National Bureau of Asian Research in its Strategic Asia and Northeast Asian Studies programs, providing research assistance and editing support. He regularly contributes to The National Interest and China Brief, and his writing also has appeared in the Taipei Times, the East-West Center’s Asia-Pacific Bulletin, The Diplomat, War on the Rocks, the Asia Society’s ChinaFile, the International Journal of Intelligence and Counterintelligence, Studies in Intelligence, and the Washington Journal of Modern China. His views have appeared in Defense News, Christian Science Monitor, Financial Times, Wall Street Journal, Sydney Morning Herald, UPI, BBC, and National Public Radio. He also has delivered lectures on China at Georgetown University, George Washington University, University of Cambridge, and the National Cheng-chi University (Taiwan). Mr. Mattis received his M.A. in Security Studies from the Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service and earned B.A.s in Political Science and Asian Studies from the University of Washington in Seattle. He also studied Chinese language, history, and security policy at Tsinghua University in Beijing.

Mattis Peter and Matthew Brazil
Chinese Communist Espionage: An Intelligence Primer
8vo, br. ed- 359pp. This is the first book of its kind to employ hundreds of Chinese sources to explain the history and current state of Chinese Communist intelligence operations. It profiles the leaders, top spies, and important operations in the history of China's espionage organs, and links to an extensive online glossary of Chinese language intelligence and security terms. Peter Mattis and Matthew Brazil present an unprecedented look into the murky world of Chinese espionage both past and present, enabling a better understanding of how pervasive and important its influence is, both in China and abroad.
