Mirroring the Past: The Writing and Use of History in Imperial China
8vo, hardcover in dj. China is known for its deep veneration of history. Far more than a record of the past, history to the Chinese is the magister vitae (teacher of life): the storehouse of moral lessons and bureaucratic precedents. "Mirroring the Past" presents a comprehensive history of traditional Chinese historiography from antiquity to the mid-qing period. Organized chronologically, the book traces the development of historical thinking and writing in Imperial China, beginning with the earliest forms of historical consciousness and ending with adumbrations of the fundamentally different views engendered by mid-nineteenth-century encounters with the West. The historiography of each era is explored on two levels: first, the gathering of material and the writing and production of narratives to describe past events; second, the thinking and reflecting on meanings and patterns of the past. Significantly, the book embeds within this chronological structure integrated views of Chinese historiography, bringing to light the purposive, didactic, and normative uses of the past. Examining both the worlds of official and unofficial historiography, the authors lay bare the ingenious ways in which Chinese scholars extracted truth from events and reveal how schemas and philosophies of history were constructed and espoused. They highlight the dynamic nature of Chinese historiography, revealing that historical works mapped the contours of Chinese civilization not for the sake of understanding history as disembodied and theoretical learning, but for the pragmatic purpose of guiding the world by mirroring the past in all its splendor and squalor.

Understanding The Analects Of Confucius: A New Translation Of Lunyu With Annotations
State University of New York Press Albany: 2017. Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book. A new translation and commentary of the Analects for contemporary audiences. The Analects of Confucius is arguably the single most influential work of China's cultural heritage. In this new English translation Peimin Ni accomplishes the rare feat of simultaneously providing a faithful translation of the text offering his own reading based on gongfu practice perspective and presenting major alternative readings to help the reader understand how diverse interpretations and controversies arise. In addition to the inclusion of the original Chinese text Ni adds a comprehensive introduction a discussion of key terms annotations and extensive cross-references. In doing so Ni makes the text accessible and engaging for today's audience. Peimin Ni is Professor of Philosophy at Grand Valley State University. His books include Moral Cultivation and Confucian Character: Engaging Joel J. Kupperman coedited with Chenyang Lialso published by SUNY Press. "Understanding the Analects of Confucius is an outstanding work of sinological scholarship." Henry Rosemont Jr. author of A Reader's Companion to the Confucian Analects "Peimin Ni's translation of the Analects has many virtues that make it stand out as an exemplary version of this most important Chinese text. Ni has chosen to present the text as a living document embedded in two thousand years of commentarial conversation over its meaning with today's readers very much part of that ongoing conversation." Stephen C. Angle author of Contemporary Confucian Political Philosophy State University of New York Press, Albany: 2017 hardcover

Nicola Di Cosmo (a cura di) Ed.
Military Culture in Imperial China
8vo, pp.449.This volume explores the relationship between culture and the military in Chinese society from early China to the Qing empire, with contributions by eminent scholars aiming to reexamine the relationship between military matters and law, government, historiography, art, philosophy, literature, and politics. This book critically investigates the perception that, due to the influence of Confucianism, Chinese culture has systematically devalued military matters. There was nothing inherently pacifist about the Chinese governments' views of war, and pragmatic approaches - even aggressive and expansionist projects - often prevailed. Though it has changed in form, a military elite has existed in China from the beginning of its history, and military service included a large proportion of the population at any given time. Popular literature praised the martial ethos of fighting men. Civil officials attended constantly to military matters on the administrative and financial ends. The seven military classics produced in antiquity continued to be read even into the modern period. These original essays explore the ways in which intellectual, civilian, and literary elements helped shape the nature of military institutions, theory, and the culture of war. This important contribution bridges two literatures, military and cultural, that seldom appear together in the study of China, and deepens our understanding of war and society in Chinese history.
