Staff of South China Morning Star Edited By Edith Terry
Pearl River Super Zone: Tapping Into the World's Fastest Growing Economy
Hong Kiong China : SCMP Book Publishing 2003. Hong Kong built its fortunes as a gateway to trade with the mainland first as an outpost of British entrepreneurialism against the crumbling backdrop of the Qing Dynasty then as an outlet of free enterprise for the Communist nation that rebuilt China a fter 1949. As China's economic reforms exploded after 1978 Hong Kong emerged as the mainland's premier source of capital and manufacturing prowess concentrated in the regions along both banks of the Pearl River. Today nearly a quarter century after nearby Shenzhen was designated special economic zone the former fishing village vies with Hong Kong for density and office towers and Hong Kong's fate is still very much a prod of its location. Now however it is up to Hong Kong to continue to find to add value as the economy of the Pearl River Delta is transformed by rap' growth. If Hong Kong has been at the centre of one of the century's most fascinating economic and social transformations the South China Morning Post has had a front-row seat covering the story. This collection of articles and essays from the Post's business n ews and opinion pages reflects the depth and breadth our reportage and commentary. We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts Theology History Politics Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions and all types of Academic Literature. . Brief Authority: Excursions of a Common Man in an Uncommon World / Recollections of China and Thailand
290 pages. Index. Signed and inscribed by author upon half-title page. First printed in the US by Harper & Brothers in 1956. "Author was born in 1901 and in 1921 was appointed to the American Legation in Peiping - although his actual diplomatic career began in 1923 when he was named Vice-Consul at Mukden. For the next eighteen years he held various posts in many parts of China, until December 1941 - while he was American Counsul at Shanghai - when the Japanese captured the city and he was interned for several months. Named Consul General at Vancouver in 1945, he left the next year to become Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary, later American Ambassador to Thailand, a post he held until his retirement in 1953.... He saw China and Manchuria in chaos under the warlords. He witnessed the growth of Chinese nationalism, and China's suffering as first the Japanese and then the Communists struggled for ascendency." - from dust jacket. Average wear. Tanning to endpapers. Binding intact. Above-average wear to dust jacket now preserved in mylar. An important account of these pivotal years in China, as witnessed by an American diplomat. Book

Staude Terzani Angela a Cura Di
Testimonianze e ricordi di: Abbas, Mara Amorevoli Elizabeth Becker, Giovanna Botteri Salomon Bouman, Philip Bowring Paolo Breccia, Nayan Chanda Umberto Chapperon, Furio Colombo Charles-Antoine de Nerciat Siegmund Ginzberg, Pham Lan Huong Henry Kamm, Peter R. STEIN, Aurel.
Innermost Asia: Its Geography as a Factor in History. [First Asia Lecture]
56 pages, in two complete issues. Plus numerous photographic plates, one of which is a panoramic view and two large fold-out color maps, measuring approximately 9 x 18.5 inches (23 x 47cm) and 8 x 9 inches (20 x 23cm). Published in two separate consecutive monthly issues of the Geographical Journal. Original condition with blue wrappers, titles to front, and containing all the ads. Two complete issues, seldom found in such good and original condition. Aurel Stein's first lecture at the Royal Geographica Society and covers his travels in Chinese Turkestan. Pre-dating Aurel Stein's book, "Innermost Asia", published in 1928. A highly invaluable expedition account, profusely illustrated with spectacular photographic plates and accompanied by 2 large fold-out colour maps, containing Stein's elucidation of ancient routes, remarkable excavations, and prehistoric civilizations. Features Loulan, Tunhwang, Mastuj, Lovaza, the former delta of Quruq Darya, the Mingshui Wells and dried up Lop Sea, etc. Stein's explorations extended from Central Asia, Kansu and Eastern Iran, carried out under the orders of H.M. Government. Stein's captivating personal reveal of archaeological and geographical explorations carried out, and most significant discoveries made in the remotest parts of Asia. "Innermost Asia" is the detailed scientific report of the author's Central Asian expedition to Chinese Turkestan, tracing the ancient route across the Lop desert undertaken during the years 1913-16. This took him to Kashgar, Khotan, the Pamirs, Samarkand, before finally turning south through eastern Persia to Baluchistan. In addition to visiting old sites, he made several new excavations in the region of Turfan. At the Caves of the Thousand Buddhas he extracted more manuscripts and on his return through Persia discovered Buddhist remains at Sistan in south-east Persia. At the end of this expedition Stein's reputation as the authority on the archaeology of the Silk Road was unchallenged. As with his other great expeditions it was to be several years before the publication of the official report but when it arrived it was a great success, most copies having been sold prior to publication. Yakushi S720. A primary archaeological resource - The first discovery of Tun-Huang and the Caves of the 1000 Buddhas. With Spectacular Maps and Photographic Illustrations
