‎[CHINESE-AMERICANA HANDBILL] BRODSKY, BENJAMIN‎

‎Real Life in China. A Trip Through the Mysterious Forbidden City Over the Great Wall of China and Other Famous Places.‎

‎San Francisco.: Atlas Printing Co. 416 S. Dearborn St. Circa1915. Printed handbill 4pp bifolium 20 x 14cms four black and white photographic illustrations and text within borders original folds small edge tears early pencilled annotation "Milwaukee -- 1915" at the foot of the front page and a couple of interior doodles a little dusty especially at the folds but overall in very good condition. Exceedingly scarce unrecorded handbill advertising Benjamin Brodsky's documentary "Real Life in China.the most interesting and educational photoplay ever produced in 8 big reels" and only the first of a two part film intended to be shown with a lecture by Brodsky himself. The handbill claims "Mysteries are mysteries no longer under the searching eye of the camera and the walled in and superstition-locked glories of China are brought forth as evidence of the real wonder of the celestial empire".

The four captioned photographic illustrations show: A pagoda; Pumping water on the rice fields; Grinding the Rice and a Chinese Prisoner in stocks.

The US National Film Preservation Foundation on whose site a remarkable fragment of the film has been preserved and is viewable notes that:

"On the eve of World War I as the political struggles in China made the news Americans knew little about the vast and mysterious country of more than four hundred million people. But by the end of 1917 there were at least 10 documentaries available to satisfy curiosity about America’s new ally in the Far East. Virtually all were short subjects that like the Burton Holmes travelogues from Paramount played alongside features. Travel shorts with a more educational slant continued in circulation through schools and nonprofit groups for years afterward.

Of these offerings the hugely ambitious Trip through China was “so vastly different from the general run of tour films that it stands in a class by itself” wrote Motion Picture News. Five years in the making or a less probable ten in some tellings the documentary was the brainchild of Benjamin Brodsky a widely traveled Russian-born businessman who claimed to speak 11 languages. According to a 1912 Moving Picture World profile the young entrepreneur had moved to China from San Francisco after the 1906 Earthquake and set up shop as a film exhibitor. A Trip through China was probably fashioned from the 20000 feet of negative that Brodsky brought back to San Francisco in 1915. Versions screened locally nine months later and in Los Angeles the following year. When distribution went national in March 1917 the ten-reeler was heralded as a “revelation.” . A series of 8 pen and ink drawings 5 coloured 1 also highlighted in gold drawn from Chinese books possibly the 14th-century Sanguo yanyi or Romance of the Three Kingdoms. All mounted on European paper 6 on 3 different patterns of decorated paper. The paper of the drawings ranges from 23.5 x 14 cm to 24 x 15 cm. ‎[Dutch East India Company; China]‎

‎The Effigies of Mr. Jno. Nieuhoff. Portrait‎

‎London: Churchill 1701. Very good condition. An engraved frontispiece portrait of Johann Nieuhoff an official of the VOC and important writer and illustrator of contemporary China whose study of China was produced in 1665 by his brother Hendrick and titled 'An embassy from the East-India Company of the United Provinces to the Grand Tartar Cham emperor of China: . at his imperial city of Peking wherein the cities towns villages ports rivers &c. in their passages from Canton to Peking are ingeniously described by John Nieuhoff; '.

The work was essential to European understanding of China as it was the only reliable source along with the reports of the Jesuits of information and images available at the time. The work was translated into French German Latin and English and was the first to include 150 true to life illustrations drawn by Nieuhoff himself. In 1649 he joined the East India Company first in Batavia and then in China as steward at the embassy which aspired to gain trading rights with China's southern coast. His specific duties were to
observe all "farms towns palaces rivers . and other buildings" that he might encounter drawing them "in straight form and figure" as well as remains of the historical victory of the "Tartars" Manchus that brought an end to the reign of the Ming dynasty. He remained in China until 1657.

Nieuhoff wears an elaborate costume and holds a rolled sketch in his right hand; in the background is a sailing ship. 7 x 11 1/4" on paper 7 3/4 x 12" Churchill unknown‎

‎[EARLY 20TH CENTURY MANUSCRIPT MAPS OF CHINA AND KOREA].‎

‎支那全圖. Shina zenzu. 朝鮮の図Chōsen no Zu Maps of China and Korea‎

‎Japan. No date. Circa1902. Two very attractive colour folded manuscript maps one showing China and the other Korea.

Map of China: Watercolour map 48 x 63.5cm. Closed tear now professionally repaired.

Map of Korea: Finely detailed watercolour map a few tiny holes very neatly repaired on the verso with archival washi. 33 x 24.5cm Two delicate hand-painted maps one of China and one of Korea produced by a Japanese student cartographer named Koike Tokushige 小池徳重.

The undated map of China appears to have been produced in the first five years of the twentieth century: a time when Japan had recently colonized Taiwan and when Japanese economic and political interest in the region was rapidly expanding. The inscription on the map suggests that it was a third year college project. But the high level of detail suggests that the artist had considerable experience of map making. The map of China shows the main provinces rivers major transport routes the Great Wall and the location of key cities although the names of the cities are not included. It also shows outlines of the Korean Peninsula Taiwan and the Japanese island of Kyushu but not the rest of Japan.

The map of Korea is more detailed. It provides an accurate outline of the Korean Peninsula with careful hatching indicating changes in elevation. Rivers and major road routes are shown on the map and the locations of major towns are marked though only Busan and Incheon are named. Dotted lines show coastal sea routes and routes between Kyushu and Busan and between Incheon and China. The map shows the Gyeongin railway line between Seoul and Incheon which was completed in 1899 and route of the Gyeongbu railway line between Busan and Seoul whose construction started from both ends in 1901. But the map depicts only small sections of this line close to Seoul and Busan as being completed with the rest more lightly outlined to show the projected route implying that the map was drawn around 1901-1902 and certainly before the Gyongbu line was opened in 1904.

Inserted text gives the land area and population of Korea. Rather strangely though the figure given for the Korean population is vastly underestimated. Ikeda gives this as 5.7 million when in fact at that time is was around 18 million. . unknown‎

‎London.: G. Nicol. April 121796. Large format engraving 29.9 x 45 cm; 37 x 50 cm sheet trimmed to the platemark spots of browning to the image mainly affecting the sky and marginal foxing corners a little toned old paper repair affecting the caption only no loss the sheet creased at the corners and a little dusty but a strong dark impression in very good condition. Intricate and wonderfully composed engraving after a drawing by the artist William Alexander 1767-1816 prepared for the folio atlas to George Staunton's account of the Macartney Embassy to China of 1793. The engraver James Fittler 1758-1825 was appointed by George III to be his Marine Engraver. Despite the serried ranks of the Chinese noblemen attendants and the figure of the Emperor himself occupying almost the entire engraving it is the figure of Lord Macartney making an entrance stage right who steals the show. Fittler has amplified Macartney as "hero" with the dramatic use of tone: Lord Macartney is bathed in light a representative of the British Empire "on which the sun never sets". The page attending Macartney is the figure of George Staunton's son Thomas.
A dramatic evocation of the might of Empire.

From the Estate of the late collector and scholar Arthur Hacker. .
